420 with CNW — Why Women Use CBD Supplements Daily

More and more women are turning to a cannabis extract called cannabidiol (CBD) as an alternative treatment. Unlike THC, which is the main psychoactive element in cannabis, CBD does not intoxicate users. Studies have found that the cannabinoid has plenty of medical potential and can be used to alleviate conditions such as chronic pain and mood disorders, including PTSD, in place of conventional pharmaceutical treatments.

The medical and health and wellness industries have taken a particular liking to CBD due to its alleged medicinal properties. And, according to data from Ease Survey, female baby boomers account for a large percentage of cannabis users.

Another study revealed that while men are more likely to use cannabidiol for overall health and wellness, women tend to use it to alleviate medical conditions. This is probably because women have often lacked access to medical treatments, with most medical research being centered on men, which led females to seek alternative treatments.

Pain is one of the conditions that push people to CBD. A 2019 poll by Gallup found that 40% of CBD users utilize the cannabinoid for its pain-relieving abilities. On top of chronic conditions such as endometriosis and fibromyalgia, women are likely to experience pain due to the effect menstrual cycles have on their hormones. Fluctuating hormone levels can lead to low estrogen, which increases the body’s sensitivity to pain.

Women also have greater nerve density, which causes them to feel pain more intensely. Another reason women are more likely to turn to CBD supplements is pelvic pain, a condition that specifically affects women. A 2021 study done by University of Michigan researchers found that women with chronic pelvic pain regularly use CBD to alleviate their symptoms. An estimated 76% of the respondents revealed that they substituted pharmaceutical medications with CBD, and 81% said that the cannabinoid reduced their pain.

CBD has also shown potential in treating mood disorders, and plenty of women seem to have noticed. Compared to males, women are more likely to experience anxiety and depression throughout their lives with puberty, pregnancy, postpregnancy, perimenopause and menopause increasing the chances of depression significantly due to hormonal fluctuations. CBD can help regulate and balance these hormones.

Cannabidiol’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties make it great for treating skin conditions and promoting healthy skin. With companies developing a wide variety of CBD-infused skin products, such as salves, oils, balms and creams, women are using them to combat conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, and to reduce breakouts.

CBD lube can also help women enhance their sex lives. Alex Capano, the medical director at Ananda Hemp, says that because of the abundance of cannabinoid receptors in reproductive organs, CBD can boost blood flow, which increases sensitivity and natural lubrication. It can also help to reduce performance anxiety and increase muscle relaxation.

The analysis above sheds vital light on the different reasons why plenty of women could be buying CBD-rich products from licensed companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC).

420 with CNW — University of Mississippi Research Shows Marijuana Legalization Reduces Admissions in Foster Care

According to a recent study undertaken by University of Mississippi researchers, the legalization of cannabis, especially for recreational use by adults, is linked to a minimum of 10% reduction in the rates at which kids are admitted into foster care homes. These reductions occur for placements associated with neglect, physical abuse, abuse of drugs (excluding marijuana) or alcohol as well as for parental incarcerations.

The study further indicates that if marijuana were to be legalized federally, there would be massive savings with regard to the money injected into foster care each year. To arrive at these conclusions, the team of researchers collected data from several sources and then analyzed that data.

The authors reported that from their analysis, admissions to foster care drop by a minimum of 10% once marijuana is legalized, and bigger reductions occur several years after a jurisdiction has ended cannabis prohibition. The team compared the data for states with recreational cannabis markets and states that don’t have enabling cannabis laws for the recreational use of the substance.

Previous research suggests that each child placed into a foster-care family costs approximately $25,000 each year. Based on this estimate, the University of Mississippi team deducted that allowing adult-use marijuana can save the country approximately $675 million every year with regards to the funding that goes into sustaining the foster care systems.

One source of data for this research was the reporting system of the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis. The team accessed the records from this system spanning the period 2000 to 2017. They found that there was no statistically notable difference between the rates at which kids enter the foster care system in different states that don’t have recreational marijuana laws. However, admission reductions start gradually manifesting once legalization takes place.

Several possible explanations are offered for this occurrence. First, the researchers posit that allowing recreational cannabis can potentially reduce the likelihood that an individual will abuse other drugs. For instance, studies say legal access to recreational cannabis correlates with a reduction in the use of alcohol.

Also, cases of kids going into foster care due to the imprisonment of their parents or other related causes tend to decrease when recreational marijuana is legal. However, the researchers are quick to note that they aren’t sure exactly how these “knock-on” effects occur and further research is needed to understand any causal relationships between full cannabis legalization and issues such as parental neglect, physical abuse and so on.

For now, it looks like enacting recreational cannabis laws and allowing entities such as American Cannabis Partners to operate seems to be good for society, especially in terms of lowering the incidence of kids ending up in foster care.

CannabisNewsBreaks – InMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: INM) Expanding Rare Cannabinoid Manufacturing Scale

InMed Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INM), a rare cannabinoid drug developer, is expanding its product manufacturing scale, thanks largely to the acquisition of consumer-focused rare cannabinoids manufacturer BayMedica last year. “InMed’s most-recent Q2 financial statement reported revenues of $0.3 million from commercial sales of cannabichromene (‘CBC’) to the health and wellness market following the BayMedica acquisition. Since January, the company has also been selling cannabicitran (‘CBT’) to the health and wellness market on a B2B basis,” a recent article reads. “The company’s forward-looking focus on bringing new cannabinoid products to commercial scale anticipates scales of cannabidivarin (‘CBDV’) and tetrahydrocannabivarin (‘THCV’) in the coming months as its next revenue generators…. The company expects to produce more than 100 kilograms of CBDV and THCV under the initiative. Because of the very limited quantities of rare cannabinoids that make them effectively impractical from an economic standpoint to extract directly from the plant for pharmaceutical use, InMed’s R&D operation is working to develop synthetic formulations for the treatment of specific conditions.”

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Advances its Human Nicotine Study and Announces New Nicotine Formulation Creation and Evaluation Program with Altria

  • Lexaria’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology has proven, in the NIC-A21-1 animal study, to be 10-20 times faster in reaching peak delivery of nicotine to the bloodstream than controls
  • The company hopes to affirm this in the NIC-H22-1 human nicotine study as their DehydraTECH-nicotine pouch performance will be compared to existing leading brands currently sold in the United States such as ON! and Zyn
  • Lexaria has separately announced new agreements with Altria that will see the company receive a fee to provide certain DehydraTECH powder-based nicotine formulations that Altria will evaluate
  • The company hopes that this, coupled with the human clinical study, will confirm that purified nicotine with DehydraTECH leads to better oral tissue absorption and reduced negative experiences relative to existing brands

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) has made a name for itself as a global innovator in drug delivery platforms. Its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology, promotes fast-acting, less expensive, and more effective oral drug delivery, proven through in vivo, in vitro, and human clinical testing.

So far, Lexaria has filed for patent protection for specific delivery of vitamins, NSAIDs, estrogen, cannabinoids, testosterone, PDE5 inhibitors, and terpenes, among others. However, one product that stands out is nicotine.

Since developing DehydraTECH back in 2014, the company has been pushing for its application to most oral forms of nicotine, including but not limited to tablets, capsules, pouches, sprays, gums, pills, and lozenges. Earlier this year, the company was granted a new Australian patent that recognized DehydraTECH’s superiority in oral nicotine delivery, including in free base nicotine, nicotine salts, polymer resins of nicotine, and other forms of nicotine complexes (https://cnw.fm/hUVAr).

In 2021, Lexaria demonstrated that oral nicotine pouches using DehydraTECH technology were 10 to 20 times faster in reaching peak nicotine delivery to the bloodstream than controls, taking advantage of the new oral nicotine patent award. This animal study NIC-A21-1 showed the technology’s potential, which the company hopes will be affirmed in the NIC-H22-1 human nicotine study set to begin dosing in the summer of 2022 (https://cnw.fm/8cD79).

In another significant milestone for the company’s nicotine field of study, Lexaria announced having entered into new agreements with Altria Client Services, LLC. These agreements will see Lexaria receive a fee to provide certain DehydraTECH powder-based nicotine formulations, which will be evaluated by Altria (https://cnw.fm/k88mg).

With this, coupled with the NIC-H22-1 study, Lexaria hopes to evidence that purified nicotine with DehydraTECH leads to better oral-tissue absorption and reduced negative experiences, particularly when compared to brands that are currently in the market.

In 2018, the global smokeless tobacco products market was valued at $13.6 billion. By 2025, it is projected that this industry will have posted a 7.2% annual growth. Specifically, the global market for oral nicotine pouches stood at $2.33 billion in 2020. Furthermore, it is projected that by 2027, this sector will be valued at $21.84 billion, representing a CAGR of 30.7%.

Lexaria plans to capitalize on this growth and the company’s management is confident that the investments made thus far will pay off significantly as time progresses.

420 with CNW — Federal Regulator Cheers State-Level Cannabis Banking Reforms Amid Congressional Inaction

Banking is one of the most crucial resources the state-legal cannabis industry is missing out on due to federal prohibitions. Fearing retaliation from the federal government, most financial institutions refuse to work with cannabis businesses, depriving them of financial services such as bank accounts and loans.

Additionally, it forces marijuana businesses to operate on a cash-only basis, which significantly increases the risk of burglaries and robberies. However, some states have made efforts to increase access to banking services in the nascent cannabis sector in a bid to address these problems.

Former chair of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Rodney Hood says that while these efforts deserve plenty of praise, chances are they won’t be enough to change cannabis banking without congressional intervention. Speaking at an Emerging Markets Coalition about the cannabis banking dilemma, he said that this issue “demands special attention.”

Cannabis has proven to be one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, generating billions of dollars in sales and creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs. If the industry is given access to banking and loan services, it has the potential to be extremely lucrative in the long term. Hood noted that the surge in crime targeting cannabis businesses led to the development of certain protections at the state level for financial institutions that worked with the cannabis industry. Lawmakers in New York are even looking to provide tax breaks for the state’s new cannabis market. Pennsylvania has also passed a bipartisan bill that would protect banks as well as insurers that service medical cannabis businesses.

Hood commended state officials around the country who are trying to find ways to give the cannabis sector access to banking services amid federal inaction. However, Hood said, what the industry really needs is a federal solution instead of a patchwork of state policies to effectively fix the cannabis banking problem. As it stands, state-legal cannabis is worth billions of dollars and is poised to grow exponentially over the years yet it has a practically nonexistent infrastructure for commercial banking. With federal legalization looming on the horizon, the need for cannabis banking has become even greater.

The NCUA has formed an internal working group to work on solutions for cannabis banking in preparation for Congressional action on some kind of cannabis banking bill. One such legislation is the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, which has been passed by the House several times but stalled in the Senate.

Once federal reforms are enacted, we could see a boom in the activities of companies such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX) since fairly uniform enabling regulations will have been established for the entire country.

420 with CNW — Ukraine War Upends Marijuana Industry Supply Chains

Before the global supply chains can recover from the upheaval triggered by COVID-19, the world is again reeling from the disruptions caused by Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. The resultant supply chain challenges are starting to bite within the cannabis industry, as is the case with other sectors of the economy.

Experts say the supply chain challenges facing the marijuana industry could possibly last for the rest of this year, maybe even longer. This is particularly likely for companies categorized as ancillary to the marijuana industry, such as those providing packaging and specialized consumables to marijuana companies. The solvents used in the production of marijuana concentrates are one example of the specialized consumables that are bearing the brunt of the disruptions resulting from the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Packaging is likely to be hard hit because every cannabis brand wants to be unique and stand out from all others, which often means relying on foreign-sourced packaging materials. As the turmoil due to the pandemic showed, depending on offshore suppliers can be extremely troublesome in times when the entire global economy is shaken or brought to its knees by one factor or other.

Liz Geisleman, CEO of Colorado-based Rocky Mountain Reagents, says that the ongoing war in Ukraine just made the market for petroleum “go crazy.” She says as a result, fuel prices have given marijuana delivery companies a body blow, and the knock-on effects are spreading to other commodities, such as the ethanol used in cannabis processing.

Geisleman adds that the full impact of the rise in fuel prices hasn’t been felt yet because there is a lag between sourcing crude petroleum and refining it into final products that are released into the market. Once a few months elapse, the high cost of the recently procured petroleum will hit home, and many cannabis companies could find themselves in a tight spot, especially if they haven’t rebuilt their cash reserves that were zapped during the pandemic. According to Geisleman, she hasn’t seen the kind of price instability in the current solvents market in her entire career spanning 25 years.

And things could get worse if China joins the war in support of Russia and the United States responds by imposing additional trade barriers or tariffs on Chinese products coming into the country. Already, a 25% tariff imposed during President Donald J. Trump’s time in the White House has made Chinese-sourced inputs for the cannabis industry quite expensive.

With the rising costs of labor, the shipping delays and price increases, players in the marijuana industry may be in for some rocky times that could leave only companies with deep roots such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) standing.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces Positive Results from Pulmonary Hypertension Clinical Study

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug-delivery platforms, has released data from its HYPER-H21-3 human study. The company noted that data from its simulated pulmonary hypertension clinical study indicate positive safety and efficacy findings. Specifically, results show a tendency (p=0.1) during 15 minutes of simulated low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) for reduced pulmonary artery systolic pressure (“PASP”) with DehydraTECH-CBD treatment versus placebo. According to the announcement, PASP was significantly attenuated by about 5 mmHg or 41% overall (p=0.045) in male participants, which could indicate potential differences by sex in responsiveness to CBD treatment under hypoxic stress conditions. The company noted that this data supports similar findings from previous successful studies, all of which support Lexaria’s anticipated move to begin the process of seeking approval for the technology from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company has gathered significant evidence of DehydraTECH-CBD’s ability to reduce blood pressure across a wide variety of situations. The data from the most recent study will be analyzed in order to determine the direction of the company’s upcoming research looking into the efficacy of DehydraTECH-CBD use for the management of elevations in pulmonary arterial pressure under hypoxic conditions, related hypoxemic pathologies and pulmonary hypertension.

About Lexaria Bioscience Corp.

Lexaria Bioscience’s patented drug-delivery technology, DehydraTECH(TM), improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) enter the bloodstream by promoting more effective oral delivery. Since 2016, DehydraTECH has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bioabsorption with cannabinoids and nicotine by 5 to 10 times — in some instances with cannabinoids by as much as 27x compared to standard industry formulations — reduce time of onset from one to two hours to minutes and mask unwanted tastes. The delivery systems are also being evaluated for orally administered, anti-viral drugs; nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDs”); PDE5 inhibitors and more. DehydraTECH has also evidenced an ability to deliver some drugs more effectively across the blood brain barrier. Lexaria operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a robust intellectual property portfolio with 24 patents granted and more than 50 patents pending worldwide.
