420 with CNW — Increasing Fuel Prices Are Pushing Marijuana Delivery Companies to Go Electric

The price of gasoline is increasing rapidly in various parts of North America, including in Canada and the United States. Figures from the American Automobile Association show that as of last week, the average price of gasoline has jumped to $4.25 per gallon, which is quite an increase when compared to its $2.87 per gallon price for last year.

The Canadian Automobile Association has also observed the same upward trend, with the average national price of gasoline increasing to CA$ 1.72 per liter from its cost last year of CA$ 1.22 per liter.

This increase has put pressure on marijuana delivery companies in the region, which are already paying high operational costs and regulatory fees, all while trying to be profitable. Many believe this increase has been sparked by Russia’s invastion of Ukraine, which caused the price of a barrel of crude oil to go above $100 for the first time in almost a decade.

Owen Allerton, CEO and founder of Highland Cannabis, launched his business in January 2021. He decided to provide delivery services to ensure that consumers were able to obtain what they needed given that this was around the time that a new wave of the coronavirus was sweeping across the country and a lockdown had been imposed.

Allerton purchased a Tesla X for deliveries in an attempt to save on gas, noting that the vehicle possessed handy functionalities that helped make deliveries easier. For instance, the vehicle has the ability to limit speed as well as create a route for deliveries in advance. Additionally, the electric vehicle has a feature that enables Allerton to track the vehicle’s location when someone else is driving it.

Most companies are trying their best to navigate the unexpected increase in gas prices while shielding their customers from any increases in costs. This is because an increase in consumer costs could prompt consumers to purchase less, which will have a negative effect on cannabis companies and their performance.

Electric cars may be a good option for deliveries because they don’t require gasoline and only need to be charged. However, it should be noted that less-expensive electric vehicle models may not be as reliable and likely have a lower range. Additionally, cold weather also affects the reliability and range of some electric vehicles.

Hybrid vehicles may be the answer, however, as they conserve fuel while offering better mileage, thus enabling reliable customer service.

The measures being taken to reduce the bottom line impacts of the increase in the cost of fuel shows how the entire cannabis industry, including entities such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), can be resilient in the face of numerous challenges.

420 with CNW — Pastor Promotes the Spiritual Aspects of Cannabis Use

The last person you would expect to use cannabis would be a “person of the cloth.” However, Craig Gross isn’t a conventional Christian. Like many people who grew up during the prohibition era, he’s heard plenty of stories regarding the evils of cannabis. And in Gross’ case, he may have been taught to avoid drugs such as cannabis.

Despite that, Gross, now a Christian evangelist and entrepreneur, uses cannabis to alleviate a physical condition. Actually using marijuana after years and years of negative messaging required plenty of mental fortitude. Once Gross made the leap, the controversial plant provided effects he couldn’t have possibly foreseen.

When he first used cannabis, Gross was 36 years old. He was still reeling from his father’s passing on top of dealing with health conditions. The plant alleviated his symptoms, and surprisingly, it helped him take stock of his life and realize that he needed to slow down a bit. Now, cannabis also helps him connect with the voice he hears speaking to him when he prays.

Gross is now building a cannabis brand geared toward Christians. Called Christian Cannabis, Gross’ company will encourage Christians to use cannabis to strengthen their relationship with God. According to Christian Cannabis’ website, marijuana can help Christians “connect to God in a deep and profound way.”

The website states that cannabis can have a place in prayer and worship. It creates space, expands awareness and invites the user into a “space of unfamiliarity.” Merrimack College professor of religion Laurie Cozad says this isn’t the first time cannabis has been associated with religion. She notes that evidence shows that ancient Hebrews, Egyptians and Assyrians burnt cannabis in their shrines as incense. Sufi Muslims smoke the mind-altering substance at shrines, and it plays a major role in the Rastafari religion, with Rastafarians smoking cannabis as a sacrament and burning it in fires as an offering.

Ancient Hindu text calls cannabis a “liberator” and “source of happiness,” and holy men in religious parts of India consume cannabis at religious ceremonies and festivals. However, while the consumption and sale of cannabis are allowed in India, cannabis consumption was outlawed until states individually began allowing the mind-altering plant.

In 2006, the founder of Temple 420 Craig Rubin was arrested for selling marijuana to temple followers to help them better connect with God. He was arrested and sentenced to three years probation. To avoid this, Gross decided to go another way: forming a company and marketing cannabis to mainstream Christians to help them better connect with God.

Gross aims to have his low-THC products on Californian shelves later this year and plans on expanding to states that allow recreational use.

The spiritual angle of cannabis that this California-based pastor is emphasizing reveals how versatile the applications of the marijuana products made by legal entities such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) can be for different sections of the community.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Why Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (ACTX) Is ‘One to Watch’

Advanced Container Technologies (OTC: ACTX) markets and sells advanced, self-contained hydroponic containers called Grow Pods; the patented Medtainer(R), a water-tight, air-tight, smell-proof, child-resistant, medical-grade herb container and grinder; and related products, such as humidity controllers and LED lighting systems for vertical farming. Medtainers may be used to store pharmaceuticals, herbs, teas, and other solids or liquids and can grind solids and shred herbs. The company also provides private labeling and branding services for purchasers of Medtainers and certain related products. At the same time, Advanced Container Technologies is currently the sole U.S. distributor of Grow Pods, developed and manufactured by GP Solutions Inc., having entered the Grow Pod business in October 2020 with the acquisition of all shares of Advanced Container Technologies Inc., a California corporation. “As of Feb. 28, 2022, ACTX is exploring the acquisition of the assets and the assumption of some or all the liabilities of GP Solutions Inc.,” a recent article reads. The Grow Pods offer a self-contained, indoor “micro-farm” environment that also features unique and innovative automated systems, meaning the Grow Pods can be placed virtually anywhere. With their controlled and specially filtered environment, they allow the cultivation of a wide variety of crops closer to the point of consumption all year round. Moreover, “Indoor micro-farms, utilizing a practice known as vertical farming, have attracted the attention of governments and universities, which are now promoting vertical farming as a way to combat food insecurity and inequities.”

420 with CNW — Genetic Testing and CBD Offers Hope to Children with Intractable Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes an individual to have recurrent and unprovoked seizures. Estimates show that roughly 470,000 children in the United States are living with epilepsy. The condition is usually diagnosed when an individual suffers from at least two seizures 24 hours apart.

Epilepsy can be genetic, with research discovering more than 500 genes that may be linked to the disorder. It can also be brought about by fevers, infection, traumatic brain injuries and autoimmune diseases, which is referred to as acquired epilepsy.

Despite the presence of a number of anti-seizure medications that can be prescribed to manage the condition, about 30% of kids don’t respond to these drugs. These children suffer from what doctors refer to as uncontrollable epilepsy or intractable epilepsy. This type of epilepsy is diagnosed after a patient has tried managing the condition using anti-seizure drugs, without any luck. In some cases, however, the drugs reduce the frequency of the seizures but don’t stop them from occurring completely.

Some advances have been made in the epilepsy treatment field with the rise of genetic testing and the development of CBD-derived drugs. For instance, advancements in genetic testing technology have enabled the identification of more genetic mutations in children with epilepsy, which allows doctors to prescribe anti-seizure drugs that target certain mutations.

Genetic screening can also be used to identify undiscovered mutations linked to epilepsy and lead to the development of new drugs.

The use of CBD derivatives has also become popular as an intractable epilepsy treatment. CBD is one of the main compounds found in the cannabis plant with the other major one being THC. However unlike THC, CBD doesn’t possess psychoactive properties.

These products have been found to be effective in decreasing seizures, with the FDA approving a CBD drug known as Epidiolex for the treatment of childhood epilepsy. This formulation is said to be effective in decreasing seizures in a pair of intractable epilepsy. It has side effects that are less severe in comparison to currently used anti-seizure drugs.

The FDA also approved a nasal spray called Midazolam, an anti-seizure drug that can be used by adolescents. This drug helps treat seizure clusters, which occur in children suffering from intractable epilepsy. It’s the first new drug to be approved for this disorder in the United States in more than two decades. Experts believe that these advancements may make it easier to develop effective treatment options for children suffering from intractable epilepsy.

As these advances are made on the therapeutic front, it will get increasingly harder to sustain the attitude among some people that legally sourced recreational cannabis products from state-legal companies such as American Cannabis Partners have no benefit for users.

420 with CNW — Firm Selected by DEA to Cultivate Research-Grade Marijuana Seeks NASDAQ Listing

A Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based company that has been tapped by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to cultivate cannabis for scientific research could soon make history by becoming the first American cannabis company to trade its shares on Nasdaq. Bright Green Corp. recently filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to trade its shares under the moniker BGXX on the Nasdaq market. The Florida company noted in its SEC filing that the DEA had granted it “conditional approval” to produce cannabis for research purposes.

Once the cannabis company receives regulatory approval, investment advisor EF Hutton will calculate its initial share price for the market. Bright Green Corp. began building a massive $300 million cannabis cultivation and manufacturing plant in rural New Mexico after receiving a memorandum of agreement (MOA) from the DEA.

A public statement released at the time by New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham said that the facility would bring around 200 research and agricultural jobs, and 170 construction jobs to New Mexico. Bright Green’s majority owner Lynn Stockwell said at the time that the project would place her company and the state of New Mexico at the forefront of cannabis research.

Thanks to federal prohibition, research into the potential benefits and risks of cannabis have been virtually impossible for decades. But now that dozens of states have legalized medical and recreational cannabis and millions of Americans are using the controversial plant, the need for cannabis research has increased exponentially.

Prohibition has also made it impossible for American companies that deal with cannabis from registering their shares and trade on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ even though Canadian companies such as Aurora Cannabis and Canopy Growth can trade on major U.S. exchanges. Village Farms International, which produces cannabis in Florida, trades shares on NASDAQ through its British Columbia-based subsidiary Pure Sunfarms.

Alongside Bright Green Corp., nearly 30 private companies in California, Arizona and Pennsylvania have applied for an MOA from the DEA. The federal agency has not revealed the number of MOAs it will ultimately issue.

Bright Green has taken special care to differentiate itself from state-legal cannabis businesses, which are considered illegal by federal law. The company noted in its SEC filing that while state legal companies are only legal under state law and sell cannabis directly to consumers, Bright Green has the green light from federal authorities to exclusively cultivate cannabis for “research and manufacturing purposes.”

As many more U.S.-based cannabis companies get the nod from the DEA and list on major exchanges, momentum could soon build to change federal law and allow state-legal entities such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) to access capital through the domestic stock exchanges.

420 with CNW — Gamers Could See Cognitive Performance Boost from CBD

Competitive gamers usually undergo random drug screening for performance-enhancing drugs in various leagues, including the Electronic Sports League. CBD and THC are both compounds found in cannabis. While both compounds possess a number of beneficial properties, THC induces a high when consumed.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the compounds that the league screens for. This compound may worsen mechanics that are necessary for gaming, including basic motor coordination for tasks such as organizing, making decisions and solving problems.

Many believe that it is CBD (cannabidiol), instead, which should be screened for given the compound’s potential to enhance cognitive performance. Preliminary studies have also found that the compound’s ability to decrease symptoms of health conditions is actually good for a person’s brain power. This means that gamers with mental conditions such as anxiety may observe that they’re more level-headed and relaxed if they game on CBD oil.

While researchers aren’t completely sure about how this compound interacts with an individual’s brain, they do know that the brain undergoes considerable changes once a CBD product is consumed. These changes include an increase in connectivity patterns and brain activity while an individual is in a resting state or carrying out cognitive tasks.

Other studies have also found that CBD improves auditory/visual processing, response inhibition, verbal memory and emotional processing, which are all important processes to gaming. Experts believe that consuming CBD in the long term may also be more beneficial than its short-term use. The compound provides various medical benefits, including:

Better quality of sleep

If you game late into the night, it may be harder for you to get a good night’s rest. Taking CBD may help improve your cognitive performance as well as your sleep quality. This compound works by easing symptoms that inhibit sleep. The best CBD products for sleeping usually have other natural alternatives that promote relaxation, including valerian root and melatonin.

Reduced stress

Competitive video games may cause some stress, which inhibits a person’s ability to perform well. The use of CBD helps decrease anxiety and improves one’s ability to focus.

Decreased joint, back and muscle pain

Gaming is known to cause muscle and joint pain, particularly in the hands, wrists, arms and fingers, as well as lower back pain. CBD possesses anti-inflammatory properties that may help manage this pain. Incorporating the compound’s use with stretches and exercises may boost effectiveness.

There is much more to learn about how different cannabis compounds interact with the body, and that could explain why different marijuana users of products sourced from entities such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) can report different or even contradictory effects when they use those products.

420 with CNW — Biotech Firm Identifies Possible Pathways Explaining How Cannabis Could Help Kids With Autism

Decades after the United States outlawed cannabis and carried out a drug war that had devastating effects on Black and Brown communities, the controversial plant is gaining popularity as an alternative medicine. Although prohibition has significantly hindered cannabis research, studies show that cannabis can be effective against some medical conditions including chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

An early-stage biotech startup called Cannaformatics has recently published research in the “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research” journal, showing how cannabis can interact with pathways in the brain to reduce autism in kids. Titled “The Potential of Salivary Lipid-Based Cannabis-Responsive Biomarkers to Evaluate Medical Cannabis Treatment in Children with ASD,” the research paper outlines possible pathways for treating juvenile autism.

Specifically, the paper points out 22 new lipid-based biomarkers that can be used to facilitate cannabis treatment in kids with autism spectrum disorder. This includes lipids in the central nervous system that would theoretically allow cannabis to have an effect on the neuron function of children diagnosed with ASD.

Cannaformatics is hoping the discovery of these biomarkers will bring it one step closer to developing personalized services to patients and healthcare providers who would like to use cannabinoid-derived treatments. The company first published a paper from its Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) pilot in December 2021. The pilot ASD study is sponsored by Whole Plant Access for Autism and Canniatric.

The first paper provided evidence of cannabis-responsive biomarkers and established them as a standard tool for determining the effect of medical marijuana. In conjunction, the two research papers illustrate how cannabis-responsive biomarkers could potentially be used to create marijuana treatments for patients and develop next-gen applications and medicines based on cannabinoids.

Cannaformatics CEO and cofounder Itzhak Kurek says that unmasking marijuana’s working mechanisms has allowed the company to show that cannabis-responsive biomarkers can grant clinicians and life-science companies new tools to help them understand how cannabis can help maintain central nervous system homeostasis in kids with ASD.

Research published in the latest paper also opens up new avenues for studying cannabis’ ability to alleviate neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS and Alzheimer’s disease. Cannaformatics is ready to put together the capital it needs to launch its ASD service platform and begin research on cannabis’ impact on neurodegenerative diseases.

According to chief commercial officer Kenneth Epstein, publishing the second paper was an important moment for Cannaformatics as it proves that the company’s technology is valid and places them at the forefront of biotechnology in the medical marijuana treatment segment.

As more research comes out about the potential therapeutic applications of cannabis, the public will keep evolving in its perception of the various marijuana products sold companies such as  Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) in the different markets in which they operate.
