CannabisNewsBreaks – Grapefruit USA Inc. (GPFT) Submits NNCP Filing with Health Canada

Grapefruit USA (OTCQB: GPFT), an innovative California-based cannabiotech company, announced that it has filed Form 8-K with Health Canada; the filing is GPFT’s Notice of New Cannabis Product (“NNCP”) with Health Canada. Once GPFT receives approval of the NNCP from Health Canada, the company will be able to offer its patented Hourglass(TM) Time Release THC+CBD-Infused Topical Delivery Cream under the Canadian Federal Cannabis Act throughout Canada. The act, which became effective in 2018, provides national guidelines for legal access to cannabis as well as the product, distribution and sale of the substance. Canada became the second country in the world to formally legalize the cultivation, possession, acquisition and consumption of cannabis and cannabis-based products; it is the first G7 and G20 nation to federally legalize cannabis. Health Canada is the Canadian federal government licensing authority that oversees the implementation of the act, and all cannabis products must meet its federal regulatory requirements before they can be sold in Canada. “A filing on Form 8-K is only appropriate for truly material events,” said Grapefruit CEO and cofounder Bradley J. Yourist in the press release. “The filing of the NNCP is one of the most material events in Grapefruit’s history, as approval by Health Canada will allow us to commence sales of Hourglass technology-based THC and THC/CBD products in the largest federally legal cannabis market in the world. The world’s best cannabis topical delivery cream will then be available in the world’s largest national legal THC market — a perfect complement to Grapefruit’s California sales of THC/CBD Hourglass products and worldwide sales of Hourglass technology powered non-THC, hemp-based CBD products.”

420 with CNW — Spanish Study Finds That Young Cannabis Users Enjoy Better Sexual Function, Orgasms

According to a Spanish study published in December 2021, young people who smoke cannabis and consume alcohol tend to enjoy an overall superior sexual function and orgasms when compared to their peers who don’t smoke cannabis or don’t drink alcohol.

The research team was motivated to undertake this study because much of the existing scientific data on this subject tended to be contradictory, with some studies indicating that marijuana consumption improved sex life while others concluded that smoking marijuana had a detrimental effect on an individual’s sex life. The team based at Almeria University decided to design its own observational study in order to assess the effects of cannabis consumption on sexual function. The team opted to use the top three frequently used surveys that help in identifying potentially risky cannabis and alcohol use, in addition to ascertaining what effects that had on sexual function.

In the first six months of 2020, a total of 89 males and 185 females were assessed in accordance with the study design of the research team. These individuals were all in the age bracket of 18 to 30 years of age, and each participant was either a regular marijuana user or a regular user of alcohol or they didn’t use either of the two substances of interest. The team excluded anyone who had diabetes, high blood pressure and other conditions that could impact the person’s sexual function. Those using other substances such as MDMA or opiates were also excluded.

The researchers found that the individuals categorized as being in the high-risk group of cannabis consumers yet belonging to the moderate risk group of alcohol users exhibited better sexual function and orgasms. Additionally, individuals who used alcohol a lot tended to report a lower sexual function when compared to the marijuana high-risk group.

The University of Almeria team posits that cannabis helps to remove shame and anxiety, which could explain why high-risk users of this substance report better sexual function and orgasms. The researchers didn’t observe any significant differences between the sexual function of females and that of males in the study.

The team believes that by focusing on a younger demographic, they may have found the reason why previous studies on the subject reported contradictory findings. This is because older study subjects, especially males, were prone to declining sexual function, unlike the 18 to 30 year-old group, which rarely reports cases of erectile dysfunction.

The researchers note that future studies need to explore any potential effects on sexual function and orgasms among cannabis and alcohol users with respect to the different kinds of relationships, such as long-term relationships vs. sporadic or one-off encounters.

Such studies on marijuana would be further enriched if they made use of some of the existing hi-tech devices such as the RYAH Smart Inhaler manufactured by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) while documenting the precise dosage of marijuana that participants are taking during the sessions of interest.

420 with CNW — SAFE Banking Act Sponsor Vows to See Bill Passed Before He Retires

Operating in the legal cannabis space is no mean feat. Due to the plant’s federal status as a controlled substance, marijuana businesses have to deal with a lot of issues that players in other industries don’t even have to think of. For starters, most banks refuse to work with marijuana businesses in fear of federal reprisals, forcing the businesses to operate on a largely cash-only basis. This makes accounting and filing taxes extremely cumbersome and makes the business prime targets for criminals.

For quite a while, industry stakeholders have argued for some kind of policy or regulation that would allow these companies access banking services. The only lawmaker who heeded the call was Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who introduced the Secure and Fair Enforcement (“SAFE”) Banking Act to the House of Representatives in March 2019. The legislation would prohibit federal banking regulators from penalizing banks that provided financial services to legal cannabis businesses. Despite the potential benefits it could provide to the industry, the SAFE Banking Act did not gain the traction it needed to advance.

While the House has approved some form of the SAFE Banking Act, it failed to advance past the Senate in any form even when the Democrats had majority votes. Perlmutter, who recently announced that he would be retiring from Congress come next election, says this has left him “pretty irritated.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has consistently stood in the way of his bipartisan legislation. Schumer has been working on a federal legalization bill with federal lawmakers for some time now, and he does not want banking legislation before comprehensive cannabis reform is enacted.

With Perlmutter now in his final days as a lawmaker, he says he will use his remaining time to push the SAFE Banking Act and see get it approved. He “absolutely” believes that if the bill lands on President Joe Biden’s desk, the president will sign it into law. Forty-seven states now have some kind of marijuana market, he says, and this greatly underscores the need for “legitimate banking services.” So although he’s a frustrated with the SAFE Banking Act’s lack of progress, Perlmutter believes that the bill’s passage is a “no brainer.”

He plans on playing a major role in helping to establish cannabis banking and hopes legislators will be able to get the bill through the senate and onto the president’s desk by the end of the year. If this law were to be enacted, cannabis sector players such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) would have one less regulatory hurdle to face in their bid to expand their operations and address the needs of more consumers.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade Inc. (SGMD) Moves to Enter Rare Cannabinoid Market Through License Agreement for Patented THC-V-Rich Chemovars

Sugarmade (OTC: SGMD), an emerging leader in the licensed cannabis sector, today announced its entry into a binding letter of intent (“LOI”) with GenCann Inc., the exclusive licensor for a set of cannabis chemovars particularly rich in the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabivarin (“THC-V”) (the “GenCann Chemovars”). Under the terms of the LOI, Sugarmade and its licensed cannabis cultivator partners will be granted a five-year license to cultivate what the company believes to be some of the highest THC-V-containing strains in existence. Sugarmade and GenCann plan to begin immediate clone production, upon the signing of the final agreement, with a cultivation program beginning in Lake County, California, this spring. “While THC-V is sometimes referred to as a ‘rare cannabinoid,’ we believe the term no longer applies relative to our planned cultivation effort using GenCann’s Chemovars,” said Jimmy Chan, CEO of Sugarmade. “The test results from certified California laboratories of these chemovars are certainly impressive, with THC-V yields in flower of up to 8%. We think the GenCann Chemovars are a game-changer in the cannabinoid space. Sugarmade plans to make a substantial commitment to bring products based on THC-V to the California market and perhaps to other states in the future. Stay tuned for our upcoming product plan announcements.”

420 with CNW — State, Federal Officials Work Together on Draft Cannabis Standardization Proposals

America’s state-legal cannabis industry may be incredibly lucrative, but it is far from perfect. Barely more than a decade old, the sector is known for its patchwork laws and lack of standardization. For quite a while, industry stakeholders and reform activists have argued for the creation of standard rules and procedures. This would make interstate trade possible and allow the industry to really grow. Last week, local, state and federal officials met to discuss proposals that could end up in a federal handbook for cannabis regulation.

Cannabis was on the agenda for two National Conference on Weights and Measures (“NCWM”) committees this past week. If the cannabis-related items that were raised during these meetings are approved in subsequent meetings, they will most likely be incorporated into the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (“NIST”) federal guidance. A proposal from the Laws and Regulations Committee would establish a standard definition for cannabis and cannabis-infused products, standard requirements for packaging and labeling, and a definition for the water activity range of cannabis.

The proposals for the definition of cannabis and cannabis-infused products as well as the water activity range moved forward and can be adopted into the NIST handbook in July when the committee reconvenes. However, the proposal for the creation of a national standard of weighing marijuana-containing packages didn’t advance and won’t be eligible for addition into the NIST handbook. It will be up for discussion in the future and will most likely be reworked.

The Specifications and Tolerances Committee unveiled a proposal that would create “scale suitability requirements” for selling bulk cannabis to dispensaries in legal states directly. This proposal didn’t advance, and committee members are still working on it.

Text from the proposal states that the need for uniform standards for scale suitability has increased significantly as more states have legalized various forms of cannabis. Uniform requirements across different states will make it much easier for each jurisdiction to regulate their cannabis sector in a “fair and equitable manner,” the proposal claims.

Matthew Curran, food safety director at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, says the country’s state-legal cannabis sector needs standards regulations. The proposals unveiled at the meeting can potentially become the “first national standards” through a national consensus organization with a connection to every state, he says. Standard regulations will provide harmony across state lines, streamline regulation and give sector players such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) room to grow.

420 with CNW — Four Ways to Benefit from Medical Marijuana in 2022

With medical marijuana legal in 37 U.S. states, chances are high that you could be a resident in one of the states where patients with any of the qualifying health conditions can legally access and use marijuana therapeutically. We discuss below some of the ways through which you can support your health and wellness by incorporating medical cannabis into your routine this year.

Winter aches and pains

Whether your muscles are sore due to several hours spent skiing or engaging in another winter sport, or the bitter cold of the season has made your chronic pain a tad worse, medical marijuana could be of help. Chronic pain is actually one of the qualifying medical conditions for which patients can enroll into the medical marijuana programs in several states where this use of cannabis is legal.

Complementary medicine

Many patients in different states use marijuana either alongside their pharmaceutical medicines or as standalone treatments to manage different symptoms. Since the research on this is still scant, it is best to talk to your doctor first before adding medical marijuana to your treatment plan. The doctor will advise you about any possible drug-on-drug reactions and what you can do about this possibility.

Support mental health

Many health challenges have the potential to trigger anxiety, stress or even depression. The seasonal changes that occur as the year progresses can also trigger mental issues, such as the notorious “winter blues.” Medical marijuana has exhibited the potential to help in managing some of these mental health conditions, and you could also benefit from this potential therapeutic effect.

Alleviate digestive issues

Whether your digestive issues and nausea stem from overindulging in holiday treats or those symptoms are triggered by a medical condition or medication, medical cannabis may help you address those digestive issues. For example, a 2021 study found that marijuana can offer near-immediate relief from nausea.

You have probably heard about the cannabis munchies, and this phenomenon points to marijuana’s potential effects on appetite. It may be worthwhile for you to talk to your doctor if you suffer from digestive issues and think that medical marijuana could be of help.

As you can see, medical marijuana has the potential to help with a number of symptoms that may be afflicting you as 2022 gets underway. If you have a diagnosis for which medical marijuana can be of help in the state where you reside, consult your primary healthcare professional for advice on how to benefit from this versatile plant. Your 2022 may take a turn for the better, especially when you do your homework and identify reputable companies such as Simply Sonoma Inc.

Sugarmade (OTC: SGMD), an innovator in the dynamic California cannabis sector, has made significant progress toward its goal of becoming a central player in the growing California cannabis space. Sugarmade recently announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Lemon Glow Company, has received a conditional use permit (“UP”) number from the Community Development Department of Lake County, California — an important step toward full approval to cultivate cannabis on the property. The Lemon Glow property has an annual potential cultivation yield that could reach as much as 4,000 pounds of dry trimmed cannabis flower per acre, or approximately 128,000 pounds or 64 tons. “We are excited to see the process moving forward for our Lemon Glow property, which represents an important strategic asset as we further verticalize our overall model,” stated Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan. “Ramping up our cultivation resources is a significant step in fully leveraging a vertical model to drive shareholder value through margin gains.”
