420 with CNW — Could Cannabis Drinks Be Better for Your Health?

As cannabis and cannabis products become more accessible thanks to a wave of drug reform that has swept through several territories, people are increasingly using marijuana as an alternative to other products. Due to recent advances in cannabis technology, specifically nano-emulsification, the market has seen an uptick in the supply of smooth, high-quality, cannabis-infused drinks.

Plenty of people are now using cannabis-infused beverages as an alternative to alcohol, with many of them preferring a calm relaxing drink that won’t leave them feeling hangover the next day. Dubbed “California sober,” exchanging alcoholic beverages for cannabis drinks is gaining popularity. Melissa Egan, 45, says alcohol used to exacerbate her perimenopause symptoms, heightening her nausea, dizziness, insomnia, night sweats, and hot flashes. Now that she drinks cannabis beverages instead, her perimenopause symptoms have become less severe, especially nausea and insomnia, and she doesn’t have to recover for a day or so after drinking.

But is cannabis actually a better alternative to alcohol? Is it better for a person’s health to indulge in cannabis rather than alcohol? According to industry experts, cannabis is indeed safer than alcohol, but that doesn’t mean that it is 100% risk free. Rebecca Jesseman, director of policy at the Canadian Center on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA), says that it is difficult to conclusively state that cannabis is safer than alcohol because there isn’t a lot of research on cannabis. On the other hand, we have decades of research on alcohol use and how it affects the human body.

Additionally, she says, the two products are so different that comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. Both substances present health risks and can lead to dependence if used in an unhealthy manner. Individually, the degree of safety will depend on how often you consume cannabis as well as the strains consumed and the consumption method. Fortunately, drinking is inherently safer than smoking. At the end of the day, however, alcohol is far more dangerous than cannabis, says Tim Stockwell, a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Alcohol’s harms are much more prevalent and costly, with the Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms Project, co-led by Stockwell, finding that alcohol causes 15 times as many deaths and hospitalizations compared to cannabis among women. Both cannabis and alcohol will leave a user physically and mentally impaired, with consuming too much cannabis in one sitting leaving you anxious and paranoid while overindulging in alcohol makes you irritable or aggressive. However, while too much alcohol can cause death via alcohol poisoning, you cannot overdose on cannabis. Stockwell concedes that more research on the effects of cannabis is needed, although several longitudinal studies of regular users haven’t revealed a major problem yet.

With the entry of companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) into the cannabis drinks space, consumers now have plenty of options to choose from.

420 with CNW — The Difference Between CBD Oil, Cannabis Oil

The popularity of CBD oil has grown in the health and wellness space, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that it can help manage depression, anxiety, stress and pain. Cannabidiol, or CBD, oil and cannabis oil have also been advertised as natural alternatives to standard prescription medications, which many believe are one and the same. While both oils are derivatives of the cannabis plant, they are inherently different. We look at some of these differences below.

What is cannabis oil?

Cannabis oil contains THC, which is the mind-altering compound that causes an individual to get high. The sale, consumption and possession of the marijuana plant is still illegal under federal law, despite being legal recreationally in 18 states and medically legal in more than 35 states. This means that under the law, the products are considered narcotics, which makes it harder and illegal to acquire them.

In other countries, however, individuals can be prescribed cannabis oil for medical applications. It is mainly used as an alternative treatment option when other treatments have proven ineffective. Experts believe that cannabis oil can help manage issues such as pain and insomnia.

Most people also consider consuming cannabis oil to be healthier than smoking the substance, with some believing the oil to be more potent. Some individuals also believe that administering a dose of oil is more accurate than smoking the substance.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil can be made from either the marijuana plant or the hemp plant. However, most CBD products found across the country are made from hemp as it is not legal to sell CBD products made from the cannabis plant. This is because the marijuana plant contains more than 0.3% THC, which is the psychoactive component that induces a high.

The hemp plant contains many phytocannabinoids, including cannabidiol, cannabichromenic acid, cannabigerolic acid and cannabinol, among others. CBD oil is made by mixing a carrier oil with CBD extract. Most companies use hempseed oil or olive oil as carrier oils as they boost a product’s flavor and bioavailability.

CBD oil can be categorized into three forms: full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate.

  • Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the phytocannabinoids and terpenes found in hemp. These compounds are mixed together to support the entourage effect, which produces a better effect than individual components.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains cannabidiol and other phytocannabinoids, excluding THC.
  • CBD isolate, which is is 99.9% CBD oil. It is the purest type of CBD oil as it contains no terpenes or other phytocannabinoids.

Established companies such as Golden Triangle Ventures Inc. (OTC: GTVH) formulate a variety of hemp-derived CBD products geared at addressing the needs of different consumers.

420 with CNW — Why Careful Cannabis Preparation Is Crucial to High-Quality Extracts

Just a couple of years into America’s state-legal cannabis industry, extracts have eclipsed cannabis flower to become the most popular cannabis product. Last year, marijuana concentrate sales increased by 40% and accounted for a large percentage of marijuana sales. People are looking for safer, more discreet ways to consume cannabis, and consequently, smoking cannabis flower and vaping have been edged out by cannabis extracts. However, marijuana extracts are quite complex to produce, requiring precise, expert care from the time the cannabis plants are in the ground until they reach the factory.

In the early days of cannabis extraction, most cannabis extractors used whatever cannabis they could get their hands on to extract cannabinoids, regardless of the trim’s quality.  However, cannabis plants absorb and store any material present in the soil, whether it is minerals and nutrients or toxic pesticides and herbicides. These impurities eventually show up in whatever product the cannabis biomass is used to make, significantly reducing their quality and making them unsafe to consume.

With that in mind, companies committed to producing high-quality cannabis extracts have to use organically grown, high-quality cannabis that has no impurities and was harvested, dried and cured properly.

Liad Chatow, the head of research and development at California-based terpene manufacturer Eybna Technologies, notes that the chances of obtaining a high-quality product depend on the richness of the raw ingredient. Less than stellar care can result in moldy cannabis, reduced potency and lost terpenes, he states, ultimately impacting the quality of the final product. Since nothing can be done to reverse this kind of damage to the raw material, extractors can save themselves significant time and money by ensuring they source organically grown cannabis that has received proper care before and after harvest.

California-based Papa & Barkley ensures the cannabis it purchases for extraction is in good shape by sending temp workers to cannabis cultivators to trim and prepare the raw cannabis to company specifications. It is the responsibility of companies to make sure that the cannabis they purchase was treated right at the farm as, unlike most industries, cannabis has no industry standards, says Papa & Barkley’s chief product officer Guy Rocourt.

On the other hand, Jason Muniz, founder and president of Texas-based hemp extractor and decorticator Texas Blue Diamond Solutions, says that proper harvesting, curing and storage before extraction is the farmers’ responsibility. His prediction is that at some point in the future, farmers will sell their hemp and cannabis at different price points depending on their quality, much like tobacco.

The highest-quality raw material would come at a premium while the lower-quality cannabis would be cheaper, he says. But before that happens, extractors who want a piece of the lucrative extracts market have to ensure the raw material they use is in good shape. This is precisely what leading companies such as The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER) do in order to come up with products that customers learn to rely on.

420 with CNW — The Potential Benefits of CBD Skincare Products

You have probably heard of CBD, or cannabidiol, before. Extracted from cannabis or hemp, this chemical compound is said to have a wide variety of medical applications ranging from relieving pain and anxiety to treating seizures in epileptic patients. Thanks to its supposed medical potential, CBD can now be found in myriad wellness and health products, with the skincare industry especially taking a liking to the versatile hemp extract. But just how beneficial are these CBD-infused sunscreens, lip balms, moisturizers, lotions, masks and other skincare offerings?

According to Austin Kaz, a co-founder of New York-based Sheabrand, skincare product manufacturers add CBD to their products to give those products an extra kick, making them much more effective at treating skin conditions, including acne, eczema and dry skin. One of cannabidiol’s more well-known uses is as an anti-inflammatory agent, making it a great addition to products meant to address inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. CBD does this by interacting with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system and reducing interleukins, which are cell-signaling molecules that can stimulate inflammation.

A couple of studies have found that CBD may have the ability to nourish and rejuvenate dry skin, subsequently reducing itching. Results from a study published in the March–April issue of  Journal Clinical Therapeutics” show that CBD may be able to improve levels of skin hydration by moisturizing the skin and preventing it from losing water and boost skin elasticity. However, the researchers behind the study say this may be due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties or the fatty acids in the ointments the participants used, so more research with a much larger set of participants is needed.

Usually, dermatologists will prescribe topical steroidal creams, which act as anti-inflammatory agents, to treat some skin diseases. While these creams are perfectly safe and work great for most people, some individuals are not comfortable with using steroids of any kind. Robert Dellavalle, an adjunct professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health, says that nonsteroidal therapies that use CBD can fill this gap. This type of therapy has also achieved promising results against a condition that affects millions of people from puberty well into adulthood: acne.

CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties combined with its influence on the production of sebum by skin cells via the CB2 receptors on the sebaceous glands make cannabinoid a potential therapy against acne. Additionally, research shows that topical CBD may be able to help kill gram-positive bacteria that are a known cause of acne. Finally, a CBD-infused sunscreen may help alleviate the effects of sunburns, such as redness.

However, do not look at CBD as a cure-all. Most of the evidence in its favor is anecdotal, and researchers say that even though preliminary studies have uncovered positive results, more research is needed. For the time being, do your homework on CBD, choose high-quality products and make sure you speak to your doctor before you use CBD, especially if you are pregnant or on other medication.

Companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) focus on offering the benefits of CBD while making infused products addressing the skincare needs of their clients.

420 with CNW — CBD Cosmetics Market Expected to Expand to $210 Billion by 2028

A recently published report that focused on the burgeoning CBD market estimates that by 2028, the global legal cannabis market will have reached $70.6 billion. Marijuana is one of the largest growth industries on the stock market. However, not all cannabis business segments are equal, with estimates showing that in the near future, some segments will considerably surpass others. One specific segment to watch is the CBD-infused products market.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the nonpsychoactive compound found in the hemp and cannabis plants. It is one of the two most abundant compounds found in the cannabis plant, with the other compound being THC, which is psychoactive.

Currently, the edibles segment makes up the biggest share of the CBD-infused market. However, the cosmetics segment is expected to occupy a larger share in the near future. CBD-infused products include salves, lotions, gels and balms, which can be applied directly to the skin. These topicals are used for various symptoms, including muscle soreness, inflammation and localized pain.

You may be asking yourself if CBD-infused personal care products can really do all that.

In fact, studies have shown that CBD possesses anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help deal with skin issues such as acne. Research has also found that CBD-infused topicals can be used to treat other issues, including psoriasis, dermatitis, cramping, headaches and arthritis.

Many individuals want to feel and look younger and healthy. This is why the international personal care and beauty market is valued at roughly $420 billion, with projections showing that by 2026, the market will have hit almost $560 billion. The increased adoption of these personal- care products is a main facilitator of the global CBD market’s growth. The market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 26.5%.

Forecasts show that between now and 2028, the CBD-infused product market will reach $216.7 billion, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 45.6%. Projections also show that in the period between 2020 and 2024, the cosmetics market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of about 25%.

Canada and the United States are leading this growth, with at least 35 states in the U.S. legalizing medical cannabis, and Canada legalizing both recreational and medical marijuana. Other key markets for CBD-infused cosmetics include the United Kingdom, Mexico, China and Germany.

Various companies have joined the CBD-infused cosmetics market, including Valens Company Inc., which is involved in the sale of health as well as wellness products such as CBD bath bombs. Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) has also entered the market and offers a line of CBD wellness products.

420 with CNW — Trials on Marijuana-Based Treatments for Gynecological Conditions to Begin in 2022

Clinical trials to examine the effectiveness and safety of marijuana-based treatments for various gynecological conditions are expected to begin early next year. The trials will evaluate marijuana-based pharmacology products developed by Gynica, a female technology startup company based in Jerusalem.

The startup believes that the plant’s active ingredients can help ease painful gynecological conditions, including endometriosis and painful menstruation, which is also known as dysmenorrhea. Traditional treatments, such as hormone therapy, over-the-counter painkillers and surgical intervention. can be inadequate and pose their own health risks, as in the case of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a disorder which causes tissues that normally line the uterus, known as the endometrium, to grow outside the uterus. These tissues usually become trapped inside the body and thicken, causing a build-up of adhesions and scar tissue. This results in excessive bleeding, painful intercourse and painful menstruation. In some cases, endometriosis can cause infertility.

Endometriosis has no definitive cause and no cure. It takes between 6 to 10 years for the disorder to be properly diagnosed, despite the fact that it affects every 1 in 10 women of reproductive age globally. This equates to about 180 million girls and women around the globe.

Gynica hopes to meet these unaddressed needs in women’s health by developing marijuana-based solutions for these gynecological conditions.

The CEO and co-founder of the start-up, Yotam Hod, stated that there exists so many gaps in how conditions that affect women are handled by both the scientific community and the medical community. The company has developed proprietary vaginal suppositories, which Hod says have been designed to decrease pain as well as inflammation, which is a key factor in both dysmenorrhea and endometriosis.

Dysmenorrhea is also common, with physicians noting that the associated pain varies between mild and severe. It is estimated that between 40% and 95% of women of reproductive age suffer from dysmenorrhea. Physicians note that for some individuals, dysmenorrhea and endometriosis are related.

Gynica believes that endometriosis and dysmenorrhea may be associated with a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system. The company references published research, which states that, after the brain, the female reproductive system is the region with the most endocannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid system is comprised of natural marijuana-like molecules produced by the human body, which regulate processes such as reproductive function, sleep, mood, appetite and pain.

Hod notes that their solutions show promise for treating these conditions and maintains that cannabinoid-based treatments may provide an improved solution for women who suffer from these conditions.

If successful, these trials could lend further credence to the profile of marijuana as a medicinal plant. The entire cannabis sector, including companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), could benefit from the positive news such outcomes would trigger.
