420 with CNW — Four States Notch Record-Setting July Cannabis Sales

Last month was an extremely profitable and productive month for the cannabis industry in different states across the country, with business owners reporting record-breaking sales. This trend has been observed in various states as the marijuana markets mature, which is impressive, especially when one considers how the marijuana industry has flourished despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Below are some of the few states that posted new sales records in the month of July.

Missouri

Medical marijuana sales in the state of Missouri surpassed $20 million last month, with analysts noting that this amount was mainly attributed to growing patient enrollment in the state’s medical cannabis program and new dispensaries opening in the state. The total medical cannabis purchases made in the state thus far equate to roughly $90 million.

Michigan

Data released by a regulatory body in the state of Michigan shows that recreational sales in July broke another record, with more than $170 million in marijuana transactions.

The month of July saw $42 million in medical marijuana sales and $107 million in adult-use marijuana sales. The total tax revenue generated last month translates to about $22 million, most of which will be allocated to individual jurisdictions, public education and infrastructure projects.

Most of July’s recreational sales went to edibles, which brought in about $18 million; vape cartridges, which brought in roughly $26 million; and flower marijuana products, which raked in almost $64 million.

Maine

A 45% increase from June’s sales record was observed in the state of Maine, with adult-use cannabis sales reaching almost $9.5 million. Local papers reported that marijuana business owners attributed the increase to tourism and the Fourth of July holiday.

The state’s retail market for recreational marijuana was established in October 2020 and has grown in popularity, with July 2021 being the first time adult-use sales matched the state’s medical cannabis sales.

Illinois

In comparison to July 2020, the state of Illinois recorded double its total monthly sales, bringing in about $127 million in recreational marijuana purchases last month. Residents of the state also bought more than 2.8 million individual marijuana products last month, which represents another record.

The state’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation revealed that out-of-state visitors contributed to about $41 million in sales while residents of the state bought $86 million in cannabis.

This new record makes July the fifth consecutive month that sales in the state’s adult-use market have surpassed $100 million. Estimates indicate that the state may collect more than $1 billion in adult-use cannabis sales this year if the trend continues.

These record-setting cannabis sales point to the possible success of companies, such as American Cannabis Partners, that are active in jurisdictions with thriving legal-marijuana markets.

420 with CNW — As Cannabis Legalization Spreads, Companies Are Reconsidering Drug Policies

America’s increasingly liberal attitude regarding cannabis consumption has started to impact workplace policies. For decades, both federal and state law outlawed cannabis, which was in turn mirrored in workplace policies across the country. Most employers had a zero-tolerance policy on cannabis, with some even requiring regular drug tests and firing employees who failed. But with cannabis reform sweeping the nation, companies are starting to reconsider their drug policies.

This became increasingly clear when Amazon, the largest player in the e-commerce market with 1.3 million employees around the world, announced that it would cease testing job seekers for marijuana. A lot of businesses had been revising their drug policies in the wake of increased cannabis legalization, but Amazon’s announcement showed that the cannabis reform movement was gaining major traction. However, president and CEO of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce Todd Maisch says that while plenty of companies are relaxing their attitudes toward cannabis, there’s still plenty that aren’t.

No business wants their employees to be impaired while on the job, he says, but for a lot of them, the days of random drug tests are drawing to a close. It ultimately depends on the type of business, with some having a lot of flexibility regarding their drug policies and others being unwilling and in most cases unable to relax their drug policies. For instance, businesses in construction whose employees have to use heavy machinery have to maintain a drug-free policy to keep their staff safe while on-site as well as to limit their culpability in case an impaired employee is involved in a workplace accident.

Additionally, entities and individuals that have contracts with the federal government are required to stay clear of all drugs, even the ones that are state legal, because drug use is outlawed by federal law. As such, Maisch says, the evolution of workplace policies regarding cannabis consumption has had two approaches, with some companies adapting to the changing times and others digging their heels in and adhering to federal policy on cannabis. Fortunately for cannabis-reform proponents, current events have influenced how employers treat cannabis.

The pandemic had a historic effect on the job market, forcing a lot of industries to slow down in the wake of lockdown orders and promoting a work-from-home culture. More than a year after the coronavirus struck and as the world started opening up, people began questioning the job market and demanding fair pay and benefits. This has led to a labor shortage of the likes we have never seen before, and employers are scrambling to hire employees who are willing to join their ranks.

Thus, employers across the country are ready to loosen their workplace policies, especially regarding off-duty cannabis use, Maisch says. This easing of restrictions is likely to open up even more the clientele for cannabis products made by companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) since more people will be willing to consider cannabis usage during their off-duty hours.

420 with CNW — Nevada Judge Overturns Las Vegas PD Marijuana Ban

Employees may have finally seen a reprieve in the battle between federal and state cannabis law after a Nevada judge overturned a Las Vegas Police Department ban on marijuana consumption among its staff. Although more than two dozen states have passed either medical or recreational cannabis legislation, federal law still classifies it as a Schedule I drug. That may change in the near future. Meanwhile, employees living in legal cannabis markets often find themselves penalized by their bosses for consuming cannabis during personal hours.

According to a ruling by a Las Vegas district judge, a former LVPD officer should not have faced the threat of losing his job after he failed a THC test. Former officer Stuart Bowman resigned in lieu of being fired after off-duty cannabis use led to a failed drug test. He then sued the LAPD arguing that he shouldn’t be penalized for indulging in state-legal activities during his private time, and that the LVPD’s zero-tolerance policy for cannabis is untenable. Judge Kathleen Delaney agreed, ruling that the police department’s zero-tolerance cannabis policy was indeed untenable.

Since state law prohibits discriminating against staff who engage in state-legal cannabis use during their non-working hours, she said the department’s penalties against the former officer were against the law. As such, she instructed the LVPD to grant him back pay, cover his legal fees and put him back on the force.

However, the police department’s lawyers argued that the department had the right to terminate Bowman, citing a separate statute that says that public and private employers can prohibit the use of both legal and illicit drugs via workplace policies. Additionally, they mentioned a case in Colorado that saw the court uphold the decision to fire an employee for using cannabis off-site.

But according to Bowman’s attorneys, the Colorado statute’s vague definition of lawful allowed employers to adhere to federal law, which outlaws cannabis, over state law and terminate employees who indulge in state-sanctioned cannabis, even during their personal time. Nevada’s statute, on the other hand, specifically says that employers cannot discriminate against staff who take part in activities allowed by state law. Now that Judge Delaney sided with former officer Bowman, his attorney Adam Levine says the written motion may take a week to prepare.

Still, Levine advises police officers who want to consume cannabis to exercise restraint. While the LVPD will likely agree to issue Bowman’s back pay, it will most likely appeal against reinstating him. The Las Vegas Police Department did not respond to requests for a comment on the case when contacted by local media outlets.

The ruling made by the judge in Nevada can have beneficial ramifications inasmuch as patients who can be helped by using medical marijuana will not fear to take this option alongside high-tech devices such as the Smart Patch made by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH), which is intended to deliver plant medicine to a particular site, such as a painful joint.

420 with CNW — A Comparison Between Cannabis Edibles and Infused Drinks

Over the last decade, marijuana-infused drinks have improved greatly in both consistency and flavor. As more states across the country legalize marijuana for recreational and/or medicinal use, the use of cannabis products such as marijuana edibles and marijuana-infused drinks grows.

The search for alternatives to alcohol and alcoholic beverages has also boosted the consumption of these drinks. An report by BDS Analytics has found that roughly 20% of marijuana consumers are now consuming marijuana beverages in legal markets for various reasons, whether it’s to have fun, feel peaceful or relax.

So, how are these beverages made?

CBD and THC are the two most popular cannabinoids; they are both found in the marijuana plant. These compounds aren’t easily mixed with water and are fat soluble. THC is alcohol soluble but cannot be combined with alcohol since it is illegal to combine marijuana and alcohol.

To create a wholly consistent product that contains the same dose of marijuana in each sip, cannabis firms use nano-emulsification. The process involves breaking down cannabis oil into minute particles that are mixed with an emulsifier, which helps the oil to dissolve in the water-based drink.

How do marijuana-infused beverages compare to edibles?

First, they afford some flexibility. These drinks can be consumed in different ways, depending on an individual’s preference. For instance, they can be added to a baking or cooking recipe, mixed with other beverages or just taken with ice.

They are also good for beginners. The quick uptake of cannabis-infused drinks decreases the chances of the user getting too high by consuming too much, which is better than trying an edible, as the dosing isn’t known or exact.

They are easily enjoyable. Sometimes an edible may result in a bad outcome, which may leave the user feeling groggy or sick in the hours that follow. However, you can enjoy your cannabis-infused drink without having to worry about a hangover, seeing as it is nonalcoholic and has no severe side-effects.

Beverages can be consumed socially. Unlike vaping or smoking a joint, you don’t need to excuse yourself in order to enjoy your marijuana-infused drink. With cannabis-infused beverages, you can carry on drinking while keeping your conversation going and interacting with people.

In addition, the beverages have a quicker uptake. Edibles such as cannabis chocolate, gummies and baked goods need to be digested for absorption to start, which means it takes about four hours for an individual to feel its effect. On the other hand, you will feel the herb’s effects about half an hour after you consume a cannabis-infused beverage.

The great strides made in infusion technology have allowed companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) to offer an array of infused drinks that suit the needs of different consumer segments.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Why Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) Is ‘One to Watch’

Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), an internationally focused cannabis brand builder, boasts a portfolio that spans several verticals, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, cosmetics, and food and beverage — each with a thoughtful brand designed to resonate with its intended end customer. From Flora Lab SAS and Flora Beauty to KASA Wholefoods and Hemp Textiles & Co., each of its brands prioritizes natural ingredients and value-chain sustainability, consistent with its mission. Though the company is currently organically growing market share for its existing brand portfolio, it is also seeking revenue-generating acquisitions that offer an accretive distribution network to amplify growth. As such, a recent article reads, “Flora Growth is targeting transactions to complete the supply chain via key infrastructure to enhance its global distribution with the aim to compete on low-cost, high-quality inputs paired with premium brands that create business lines with robust margins.” To date, Flora has announced two major transactions: the acquisition of Koch & Gsell and investment in Hoshi International. “Key to Flora Growth’s expansion efforts is its cultivation strategy. The company’s Cosechemos farm, located in Bucaramanga, Columbia, is currently licensed to cultivate 247 acres of cannabis. Flora Growth is uniquely positioned to capitalize on Columbia’s favorable growing conditions, low-cost infrastructure, and affordable local workforce as it looks to ramp up its cultivation efforts moving forward.”

420 with CNW — Cannabis Use Lower Among Cancer Survivors Compared to the General Public

Marijuana’s decades-old reputation as a hard drug with high potential for addiction and no medical applications has taken a hit over the past decade. With more than 30 states legalizing medical cannabis, the controversial drug is now being used to help alleviate a wide variety of medical conditions. As the public becomes warier of opioids, plenty of patients have begun using cannabis to alleviate cancer and chemotherapy-related symptoms, including pain, nausea and insomnia.

However, recently unveiled research has shown that despite the rise in the number of people using cannabis to treat various medical issues, especially as the plans sees increased legalization, patients suffering from cancer have consumed cannabis less often than the general public. After analyzing data that was collected from 20,000 participants via a nationally representative longitudinal survey over six years, researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center published their findings in the journal “Cancer.” Within the past year, only 8% of cancer survivors had consumed cannabis compared to 15% who had no have a history of cancer.

Bernard F. Fuemmeler, PhD, a professor in the department of health and behavior policy at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, says that given the increased social acceptance of cannabis, the researchers were curious to see how many individuals with a history of cancer used cannabis. There were only two major national studies regarding this subject before the Virginia Commonwealth University study, he says, and they had wildly different results. One study suggested that 38% of patients with a history of cancer had consumed cannabis while the other found that 9% to 10% had consumed cannabis within the past 30 days. Fuemmeler, who is the associate director for population science and program co-leader in cancer prevention and control at Massey Cancer Center, says the results of their study corroborated the lower estimate.

The data he and his colleagues studied was part of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (“PATH”), collected in four annual waves from 2013 to 2018. The study was a collaboration between NIH and FDA that followed marijuana and tobacco smoking behaviors in a sample of the American population. The final sample of participants contained 20,724 individuals with 78% of them being white, 52% were women, while 59% had some college education. Analysis of the data collected between 2013 and 2018 showed that patients suffering from cancer reported much less marijuana consumption compared to people who never had cancer.

Specifically, around 3.8% of cancer survivors consumed cannabis compared to 6.5% of participants who had no history of cancer; older individuals with health insurance were even less likely to consume cannabis. Furthermore, greater pain levels were associated with a higher likelihood of cannabis consumption for both cancer survivors and those without a history of cancer.

These findings offer some food for thought for companies that manufacture cannabis products for medical and recreational, such as Simply Sonoma Inc.
