420 with CNW — A BHO and CO2 Cannabis Extraction Comparison

Despite being prohibited, cannabis has been immensely popular over the past couple of decades. Cannabis proved to be a lucrative space once territories began legalizing the substance for medical and recreational use, but things blew up once cannabis concentrates hit the market. Thanks to constantly improving technology, processors are now able to pull cannabinoids from the plant, creating high-potency cannabis products that have enjoyed major sales.

Extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp and cannabis is an insanely complex process, with the most common extraction methods thus far being butane hash oil (“BHO”) and carbon dioxide (“CO2”) extraction.

BHO, which is a solvent-based extraction method, uses a light hydrocarbon solvent called butane to strip cannabis plants of their resin. Although this method dates back to the 1970s, it can be dangerous because butane is highly flammable, thus requiring specialized training as well as closed-loop equipment for extraction. Closed loop refers to a system that pulls compounds from the cannabis in a completely airtight environment.

If done correctly and under the proper conditions, BHO can produce extracts with up to 90% THC, resulting in high-potency products that can be used for edibles, vaping and topical treatments, among others. Carbon dioxide extraction, on the other hand, uses pressurized CO2 to pull compounds from cannabis. Most of the cannabis oil used in vape cartridges is extracted via CO2 extraction. Like BHO extraction, carbon dioxide extraction requires the use of specialized equipment, and amateurs with no training are advised to avoid both of these extraction methods.

Due to the complexity and newness of BHO and CO2 extraction in the cannabis industry, a lot of people don’t know much about them. For instance, there seems to be a misconception about butane hash leaving residual solvents and producing impure extracts with an unpleasant taste, which is false. In fact, carbon dioxide extraction often uses a second solvent to winterize or crystallize the extract, which has to be removed later on. As a result, extracts made via this process also run the risk of contamination. Additionally, carbon dioxide extraction can be especially dangerous as CO2 extraction systems operate under extremely high pressures, ranging from 1,500-8,700 PSI.

As long as both methods are implemented by trained individuals using the right equipment and in controlled environments, the resultant extract will be quite safe to consume. However, note that there will be slight product differences. Since CO2 extraction calls for a lot of post processing, it may have a reduced natural flavor and a different consistency. It will also take longer compared to BHO processing, which has less post-processing steps. Due to the complexity and equipment required for these extraction methods, consumers should leave extraction to the experts and stick to easier alternatives such as cannabutter and cannaoil.

Consumers are encouraged to stick to high-quality cannabis extracts made by some of the leading companies in the industry, such as Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), to avoid putting themselves and others at risk while trying to DYI their own extracts.

420 with CNW — Clinical Studies Shed Light on Various Wellness Benefits of Phytocannabinoids

The CBD sector is among the fastest-growing subcategories of consumer natural health products and for good reason. A recent report estimates that last year, the international consumer health CBD market was worth more than $9 billion, with an expected compound annual growth rate of nearly 25% in the period between 2020–2027.

Studies linking health and wellness to CBD have also driven the manufacture of products derived from CBD in industries such as food and beverages, nutraceuticals, personal care and cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, for health and wellness purposes.

Verdant Oasis VP Carl Germano states that new research which sheds light on the role of hemp phytocannabinoids such as CBD in supporting the endocannabinoid system will influence medicine and nutrition significantly.

Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids that occur naturally in the marijuana plant. Thus far, researchers have identified more than 120 terpenes and 100 cannabinoids.

Below are some of the uses of CBD and other phytocannabinoids in wellness applications.

Skin conditions

Research has found that CB1 and CB2, which are cannabinoid receptors, are found in hair follicles, eccrine sweat glands, melanocytes, dermal cells, cutaneous nerve fibers and epidermal keratinocytes. A study that administered CBD to cultured human sebocytes found that CBD could be used as a therapeutic agent for treating acne vulgaris because of its combined anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and lipostatic effects.

Dr. Jacknin’s Skincare CEO Jeanette Jacknin asserted that research had shown that topical CBD as well as other cannabinoids could help in wounds, eczema and acne and suggested that cannabinoids may also help with itching.

Anxiety

A recent review that centered on anxiety disorders and CBD found that CBD held significant potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders. CBD also demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing anxiety in social anxiety disorder.

Immune/respiratory health

In a modeling study that simulated symptoms of acute respiratory distress syndrome, treatment using CBD reversed symptoms by increasing the quantity of a peptide known as apelin, which plays a crucial role in the peripheral and central regulation of immunity.

Another study found that cannabidiol could alleviate the uncontrolled cytokine production responsible for damaging lung tissue, in addition to launching numerous anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.

Bone health

There is increasing evidence that suggests that phytocannabinoids have a positive effect on the musculoskeletal system. Research has found that CB1 and CB2 receptors, which can be found in bones, help to regulate bone maintenance. In animal studies, researchers have discovered that CBD can protect against bone loss and improve the healing of bone tissue.

With more interest and funds being directed to cannabinoid research to discover the therapeutic benefits they deliver, the CBD market is expected to grow significantly in the future.

As more becomes known about the benefits of phytocannabinoids, companies that make cannabinoid supplements and supplements, such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC), are likely to benefit.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Could Have Origins in China, Study Says

After being outlawed in most regions across the world for decades, cannabis is coming out from under the yoke of prohibition. It has been a slow process and although the sector has shown that it has plenty of potential, cannabis still has a long way to go. However, researchers are finally getting the chance to run more in-depth studies on cannabis, and they are uncovering plenty of interesting information.

For starters, a recent study has found evidence pointing to China, specifically the northwest region of China, as home to the first domesticated cannabis and hemp. The common assumption is that cannabis sativa originated from East Asia, but its illegality over the past century has prevented research into its history and use. The study team, helmed by Swiss and Chinese researchers, took advantage of loosening cannabis restrictions and conducted an in-depth study on the history of cannabis and hemp.

The researchers concluded that the cannabis sativa species likely emerged from China’s northwest region by an estimated 10,000 to 3,000 BC (Neolithic period). According to a news release by the journal that published the study, “Science Advances,” cannabis and hemp were among the very first plants to be domesticated by humans, with humans using hemp to produce textiles, food and oilseed.

To arrive at these conclusions, the team compiled 110 whole genomes covering everything from different feral, wild-growing plants and domesticated varieties to modern hemp hybrids and psychoactive cannabis. They separated their genomic analysis samples into four different groups, including basal cannabis which is usually found in the United States and China. The data suggested that basal cannabis diverged from the ancestors of modern marijuana and hemp nearly 12,000 years ago, giving weight to the theory that by that point in history, the cannabis sativa species had been domesticated already. Furthermore, the study says, it coincides with ancient artifacts such as pottery from Southern China, Japan and Taiwan that has been dated to that period.

Once humans in the Neolithic period had domesticated cannabis, it spread across the Middle East and Europe during the Bronze Age, appearing in India nearly 3,000 years ago after likely being introduced with other crops from China, the study says. Cannabis arrived in Africa during the 13th century and traveled to Latin America in the 16th century before reaching North America at the start of the 20th century.

The closest descendants to the ancient hemp and marijuana are modern Chinese cannabis, altered by years of cultivation, and feral, wild-growing cannabis plants, the study says. However, it is likely that the cannabis sativa’s pure wild ancestors have gone extinct.

It is amazing how much researchers continue to learn about marijuana. Sector players such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) must be having their own fair share of surprising discoveries about this versatile yet controversial plant.

420 with CNW — Senator Files Bill to Protect Licensed Marijuana Extractors from Eviction

Although the past decade has seen America’s state legal cannabis industry experience major growth, federal law has consistently held the sector back. Cannabis is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, and this classification has been a constant barrier for both businesses in the cannabis space and the clients they serve. Fortunately, an increasing number of lawmakers have noticed the plight of the cannabis sector, which has provided states with millions of dollars in tax revenue, and they have been working to give the space more protections.

After an affordable housing bill failed to advance in Congress last month, Senator Jeff Merkley again introduced a bill that includes a provision preventing landlords from evicting state-licensed people who manufacture cannabis extracts. The bill, whose language is identical to the bill filed last month, has a “just causes for eviction” section containing common reasons for eviction, including defaulting on rent and causing significant property damage. It also lists “manufacture of a cannabis extract” as a legal reason for eviction, adding that tenants who hold a manufacturing license under federal, state or tribal law are exempt.

However, the bill does not provide any protections for tenants who take part in other state-legal cannabis-related activities such as possession. Curiously, the bill contains language that states that manufacturing, delivering or possessing controlled substances is enough grounds for eviction. Since cannabis is technically a controlled substance according to federal law, some landlords could choose to defer to federal law rather than state law and evict tenants who perform any of the aforementioned actions.

The inclusion of language offering protections for individuals who take part in state-legal cannabis activities in an affordable housing bill will definitely make cannabis reform advocates happy, but it may very well be inconsequential. This is because eviction proceedings tend to be handled at the state level; the assumption is that courts would turn to state law when dealing with eviction cases that concern cannabis.

Additionally, the chances of an individual being licensed by the state to perform cannabis manufacturing activities at their premises are close to zero. As such, it is not clear just how impactful the provision for manufacturing licenses would be if the proposed policy becomes law.

The comprehensive housing bill, which contains the cannabis provision, aims to correct the pitfalls of America’s housing policies and funding by addressing systemic disparities and obstacles and ensuring every American, especially the most vulnerable, has an equitable outcome.

The entire cannabis industry, including companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), may regard the rolling back of restrictions on housing as a bonus in the drive to see the cannabis industry federally legalized and given equal treatment as other legal sectors.

According to the announcement, the company has been able to determine whether DehydraTECH processing of compounds from leading classes of antiviral drugs for SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases had the ability to exhibit evidence of superior oral absorption relative to controls. In addition, testing has shown whether DehydraTECH processing of those compounds could preserve expected viral inhibitory performance upon efficacy testing in infected mammalian cells. In addition, the company noted that DehydraTECH neither alters nor degrades drug molecules chemically, resulting in the creation of new molecular entities. Looking forward, the company’s drug-testing program will likely include larger in vivo efficacy evaluations in animals infected with SARS-CoV-2, HIV or other infectious viruses. The announcement noted that Lexaria is focused on a comprehensive, multipronged program designed to gather and evaluate proof-of-concept safety, efficacy and formulation/scalability feasibility data for potential pharmaceutical industry partners to evaluate for expanded, collaborative product development.

About Lexaria Bioscience Corp.

Lexaria Bioscience’s proprietary drug-delivery technology, DehydraTECH(TM), improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) enter the bloodstream by promoting healthier oral ingestion methods and increasing the effectiveness of fat-soluble active molecules, thereby lowering overall dosing. The company’s technology can be applied to many different ingestible product formats including foods, beverages, oral suspensions, tablets and capsules. Since 2016, DehydraTECH has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bio-absorption of cannabinoids and nicotine by up to 5 to 10 times, reduce time of onset from one to two hours to minutes, and mask unwanted tastes; the technology is planned to be further evaluated for orally administered bioactive molecules including anti-viral drugs, vitamins, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and more. Lexaria has licensed DehydraTECH to multiple companies including a world-leading tobacco producer for the development of smokeless, oral-based nicotine products and for use in industries that produce cannabinoid beverages, edibles and oral products. Lexaria operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a robust intellectual property portfolio with 20 patents granted and more than 50 patents pending worldwide. 420 with CNW — Study Finds Cannabis Terpenes Relieve Pain, Play Role in “Entourage Effect”

Cannabinoids are a range of compounds produced by plants in the cannabis family with THC, the main psychoactive component in marijuana, being the most abundant as well as the most well-known. Most of these compounds, including THC, have been found to have a variety of health benefits, with most of them producing minimal to zero psychoactive effects.

For quite a while, there has been a theory about how cannabis, when consumed as a whole, is much more effective compared to when the cannabinoids are taken separately. Dubbed the “entourage effect,” this theory states that the sum of the cannabis plant, including terpenes and flavonoids as well as cannabinoids is greater than its individual components.

A recent study from the University of Arizona Health Science has uncovered evidence to back this theory, especially regarding cannabis’ pain-relieving capabilities. The researchers found that using cannabinoids alongside terpenes had a much more impactful effect on pain, potentially providing individuals suffering from chronic pain a treatment option that would need fewer doses and result in fewer negative effects.

John Streicher, PhD, the study’s lead researcher and an associate professor of pharmacology at the College of Medicine in Tucson, Arizona, and a member of the UArizona Health Sciences Comprehensive Pain and Addiction Center, says the researchers wanted to see if they could boost THC’s “modest pain-relieving” abilities by leveraging the entourage effect. Terpenes, which are produced by many plants, not just cannabis, and are responsible for marijuana’s pungent aroma, provided interesting results.

The researchers found that cannabis terpenes mimicked cannabinoids when taken by themselves, leading to a moderate level of pain relief. Once they were used together with cannabinoids, their pain-relieving impact was boosted without any negative side effects. Since terpenes can be found in numerous plants, the researchers did not expect them to affect pain the way cannabinoids do, says Streicher, who noted that the researchers used four cannabis terpenes: linalool, beta-pinene, alpha-humulene and geraniol as well as a synthetic cannabinoid capable of stimulating the body’s cannabinoid receptors called WIN55,212-2.

Cannabinoids such as THC interact with the endocannabinoid system, binding to either CB1R or CB2R receptors. According to the researchers, the four terpenes they used attached to the CB1R receptors, with behavioral studies using mice proving that once the terpenes had interacted with the receptors, they caused three of the four classic cannabinoid effects. Those effects were reduced sensitivity to pain, reduced movement, lower body temperature and catalepsy.

Streicher hopes that the research may eventually lend a hand in the fight against the opioid crisis, especially in regard to cancer-related pain. By developing therapies that combine cannabinoids and terpenes, he would like to offer people suffering from different types of cancer-related pain a low-dosage, minimum-risk treatment option.

With the increasing availability of technologies such as the IoT dose-measuring devices being made by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH), researchers could find it even easier to study how phtyocannabinoids, terpenes and other compounds affect human health.
