420 with CNW – National Hemp Month: What You Need to Know About This Celebration

After decades of prohibition, the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its derivatives. Less than five years later, hemp has become a booming industry: hemp lends itself to a wide variety of industries, from health and wellness and nutrition to textiles and construction. The global hemp industry is growing rapidly, with experts expecting it to be worth $36 billion by 2026.

But unbeknown to many, despite all the mainstream attention hemp has been getting, July is National Hemp Month, with July 17–23 being Hemp History Week. National Hemp Month was initiated by cannabis firm cbdMD on Feb. 4, 2019, to clear up the myths and misconceptions surrounding hemp-based products and promote their benefits. Conversely, Hemp History Week is hardly new, having been initiated nearly 11 years ago when Vote Hemp and the Hemp Industries Association felt that it was time to start celebrating hemp’s rich history.

While most Americans only became aware of hemp once the 2018 Farm Bill legalized it and products made from hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol) became increasingly popular, hemp has been part and parcel of America’s history since before the country’s founding. Back when the American colonies were under British rule, hemp products were in high demand, and soon Americans were manufacturing their own hemp products and steadily importing less from Britain. In the early 1700s, spinners and weavers from Ireland showed the locals how to make even finer hemp fabrics, and in 1765, the Boston Stamp Act led to the boycott of British products.

This left the supply of hemp products in the hands of the colonists, who were soon making clothes, paper, currency, ropes and even ship sails out of hemp. However, more than a century later, the Bureau of Prohibition outlawed hemp in the 1930s, a move that many historians suspect had economic and political ties to cotton, timber and cannabis. Hemp and cannabis were demonized in the public’s eyes, often treated as the same plant, and until 2018, hemp was illegal.

National Hemp Month is aimed at teaching the public this rich history, especially regarding the important role hemp played in America’s early days. On top of that, it is meant to spread word of hemp’s environmental, sustainability and health benefits, its potential for regenerative agriculture, and how technological advancements have widened the scope of what hemp can do. While the hemp sector has made great strides since 2018, it still has a long way to go. cbdMD and the entire industry hopes that by increasing awareness of hemp’s benefits, teaching its rich history and dispelling the myths surrounding it, hemp can regain some of the glory it once had.

This month provides an opportunity for all companies with an interest in the hemp sector, including Grapefruit USA Inc. (OTCQB: GPFT), to reflect on how far the industry has come and what more needs to be done to address the challenges it still faces.

420 with CNW — Coalition Publishes White Paper Urging Feds to Legalize Marijuana

While America’s state legal cannabis industry has grown steadily, creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs and generating billions in revenue, federal law still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance. President Joseph Biden has said that, while he supports medical marijuana and giving states the ability to decide how to treat cannabis themselves, he is not behind federal legalization of recreational cannabis. Even though Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said that he is working on federal cannabis legislation and will advance it with or without the president’s support, the Democrats’ window for passing federal cannabis reform is closing.

Consequently, a bipartisan coalition of advocacy groups and businesses has issued a white paper urging the federal government to legalize recreational cannabis. The 14-page white paper, published last week by the Cannabis Freedom Alliance, expressed the group’s frustration with President Biden’s stance on cannabis, which was recently witnessed after sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson was excluded from the U.S. Olympics team for using cannabis. Richardson, who reportedly used cannabis in Oregon, which allows adult use, was expelled from the team when her drug tests came back positive for cannabis.

Regarding the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s decision to invalidate the results of her 100 meter run at the Olympic trials and suspend Richardson for 30 days, Biden says “rules are rules,” adding that the question of the rules being changed is an altogether different subject. However, the inconsistencies between state and federal law, points out executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance Kassandra Frederique, leave people such as Richardson “stuck in the middle,” having to decipher unclear rules and often suffering the consequences for life.

The Cannabis Freedom Alliance advises removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act to resolve the issues caused by the inconsistencies between state and federal cannabis law. According to the white paper, the alliance hopes to establish a comprehensive regulatory structure that focuses on research, innovation and public safety; give the victims of the drug war, especially those with nonviolent cannabis related charges, a leg up in the legal market; and ensure the market has minimal barriers to entry, allowing both entrepreneurs and large companies an equal chance.

The coalition would also like to keep the tax burden on the cannabis market low to prevent customers from going to the illicit market for lower-priced products. This would deal the criminal enterprises behind the black market a major financial blow while ensuring the growth of the legal industry. Formed in April, the Cannabis Freedom Alliance includes the Global Alliance of Cannabis Commerce, Law Enforcement Action Partnership, Libertarian think tank Reason Foundation, criminal justice reform initiative Mission Green and Americans for Prosperity, which is backed by the Koch family.

The voices calling for federal marijuana policy reform are growing louder, and any reforms in that direction would greatly ease the regulatory and legal tightrope that cannabis sector players, such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), have to walk as they adhere to enabling laws at state level while being aware of the prohibition at the federal level.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Grapefruit USA Inc. (GPFT) Issues Statement on Senators Proposed Act to Legalize Cannabis

Grapefruit USA (OTCQB: GPFT), a premiere California-based cannabis and hemp company, has noted its position on the potential enactment of the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) released a discussion draft of the act on July 14, 2021. As presented, the act would remove cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances, making cannabis use legal at the federal level. According to the company’s announcement, the act also enables states to implement their own adult-use recreational cannabis laws. Almost 20 states have already done that, including California, where Grapefruit is currently operating; in addition the District of Columbia, the northern Marianas Islands and Guam have adult-use cannabis laws. Even more states — 37 in total — have laws legalizing medical-use prescribed cannabis use. The summary of the discussion draft of the act states that more than 90% of Americans believe cannabis should be legal for adult recreational and medical use. “Grapefruit enthusiastically supports the efforts of Senators Schumer, Wyden and Booker to jumpstart the long-awaited removal of cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances,” said Grapefruit co-founder and CEO Bradley J. Yourist. “Passage of the ACT will accelerate our ability to offer Grapefruit’s patented, disruptive Hourglass(TM) time-release THC+cannabinoid delivery cream to all Americans whose states or territories of residence have legalized cannabis at the state or territorial level, thereby affording them the ability to enjoy the benefits of the Hourglass full-spectrum entourage experience. Once the ACT, as described in the discussion draft becomes law, Grapefruit customers throughout the country will be able to purchase either non-THC hemp derived Hourglass time-release CBD delivery cream or THC+cannabinoid Hourglass time-release full-spectrum delivery or any combination thereof as they desire. Furthermore, these superior, breakthrough Grapefruit Hourglass products are only available from Grapefruit or its authorized intermediaries. We believe passage of the ACT, as presented in the discussion draft, will be profoundly beneficial to Grapefruit and its shareholders, as well as to the American public.”

420 with CNW — Study Finds That Cannabis Smokers Weigh Less Than Non-Smokers

Preclinical studies suggest that weight gain and increased food intake are some of the effects of marijuana consumption. However, new research proposes that individuals who smoke marijuana weigh less in comparison to those who do not. These findings go against the belief that users of cannabis pile on the pounds due to the munchies.

The new study used data obtained from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions to examine the BMI of 33,000 participants aged 18 and above. Conducted by Omayma Ashaarawy and James C. Anthony, the study was reported in the “International Journal of Epidemiology.”

Alshaarawy, an assistant professor of family medicine at the Michigan State University, who also happens to be the lead author of the study, stated that the research, which was carried out over a three-year period, found that all its participants demonstrated an increase in weight. However, the researchers were surprised to find that those who consumed cannabis had a lower increase in comparison with those who did not. Their findings also propose that overall, persistent or new users of marijuana were less likely to be obese or overweight.

The study discovered that users of marijuana, even individuals who hadn’t used it for a long while, actually had a higher likelihood of being at a healthier and normal weight while also staying within that weight range; the study reported that 15% of regular users could be categorized as obese as compared to 20% of non-users.

The actual difference in weight among non-users and users was found to be an average of two pounds, with the researchers noting that this was observed in more than 30,000 of the participants.

In the report, Alshaarawy also suggested that there are several factors that may explain what about cannabis affects weight. She hypothesizes that the use of marijuana could modify how certain receptors or cells responded in the body, which could in turn impact weight gain; another theory could be a behavioral factor like an individual becoming more conscious of their intake of food because they were worried about gaining weight after eating because of the munchies.

As no scientific conclusions have been made, she states that more research needs to be conducted on this particular topic and cautions on the use of cannabis as a diet aid. Alshaarawy adds that individuals shouldn’t consider the use of marijuana as a way to lose or even maintain weight, as there are too many health concerns related to marijuana that could outweigh the possibly positive but modest impacts the plant has on weight gain.

The entire cannabis sector, including companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC), is likely to have their attention piqued by this research since it dispels a common perception that cannabis users more often than not pile on unwanted pounds.

420 with CNW — 10 Senators Urge Feds to Grant Cannabis Firms Access to SBA Loans

America’s state legal cannabis industry has been dubbed one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, but its federal classification has been a constant hindrance. While more than 30 states allow either medical or recreational cannabis, the federal government still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance. Consequently, banks and financial institutions do not transact with businesses in the cannabis space, and, in many cases, they won’t even work with businesses that are indirectly connected to cannabis.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the resultant financial crisis, a group of senators has urged the federal government to grant cannabis firms access to financial aid. In a letter sent to the Appropriations Committee leaders, 10 senators have asked that language allowing cannabis firms to access financial aid via the federal Small Business Administration (SBA) be added to a soon-to-be unveiled spending bill document. This would see businesses in the cannabis space finally access SBA loans as well as disaster assistance as the country and world at large recovers from the worst financial downturn in a century.

Federal relief would help alleviate the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, the senators wrote. Led by Sen. Jacky Rosen, the group was comprised of Senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Jeff Merkley, Maria Cantwell, Ed Markey, Ron Wyden, Bob Menendez, Alex Padilla and Raphael Warnock. The group sent the letter to the heads of the Appropriations Financial Services and General Government (“FSGG”) and the Senate Appropriations Committee asking that the federal aid language to be appended within the FSGG spending bill document for the fiscal year 2022.

The letter also requested that state legal cannabis businesses be allowed access to the Loan Guarantee, Microloan, Disaster Assistance and the 504/Certified Development Company Loan Programs. The SBA currently excludes businesses that are directly or indirectly involved with the cultivation, production and sale of cannabis products, the letter says, and this places undue and unfair pressures on small enterprises operating in states with legal cannabis markets.

Additionally, the letter mentions that banks do not transact with cannabis businesses because they fear repercussions from the federal government. As such, these cannabis operations mostly operate on a cash-only basis, which puts them at a high risk of robberies and burglaries. Additionally, the coronavirus can survive for quite a while on paper money, putting workers in the cannabis space as well as their clientele at risk of infection.

It would be good for the entire marijuana industry, including sector players such as Chalice Brands Inc. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), if companies in the industry were given the same access to federal business loans as do companies in other industries. Such a gesture would mean that the state-legal marijuana industry was being accorded equal treatment with other industries.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Hero Technologies Inc. (HENC) Further Diversifies, Executes Growth Strategy Through MassCannabis

Hero Technologies (OTC: HENC) recently moved to capitalize on the potential of the Massachusetts market by forming a subsidiary, MassCannabis, to seek property or land acquisition opportunities in the state and potentially initiate dispensary projects. “Last year, the nonmedical cannabis market in Massachusetts hit a significant milestone: $1 billion in sales since the state voted to legalize the substance — this even though the state was one of only a handful that closed cannabis shops for a period of time because of COVID-19,” reads a recent article. According to Hero Technologies CEO Gina Serkasevich, “In forming our new MassCannabis subsidiary, we have taken another key step in executing our growth strategy as a multi-state operator (‘MSO’) and diversified our vertically integrated business model… Massachusetts is clearly a fast-growing cannabis market and expanding our footprint there would extend our geographical reach in the U.S. and diversify our addressable market.”

According to the company, the bill represents a major step toward modernizing Oregon’s cannabis regulations to create a better business environment for the industry and further aligns Oregon’s cannabis regulations with the reality of today’s industry. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed the bill into law on June 29, 2021. Chalice Brands noted that it is also a supporter of the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act discussion draft that was proposed on July 14, 2021, which aims to de-schedule cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act. “We applaud the coalition of cannabis associations and the OLCC for engaging in this critical process to support businesses and protect public health and safety,” said Chalice Brands president and CEO Jeff Yapp in the press release. “The collaborative effort on this bill demonstrates the much-needed common sense legislative updates to elevate the industry and further cements Oregon as the cannabis market leader. Chalice is motivated by the passing of SB408 and will look to leverage what we believe to be a significant growth catalyst for many cannabis businesses operators in Oregon. The legacy of the war on drugs has unfairly impacted minorities; even as states legalize cannabis, it is long overdue for the federal government to undo decades of failed drug policy. We believe the proposed bill is a clear testament to a better path forward to begin righting these wrongdoings.”

420 with CNW — The Basics of Setting Up a Green, Minimally Wasteful Cannabis Grow Facility

With at least 40 states allowing the cultivation and sale of either medical or recreational cannabis, the sector is larger than ever. Growing legal cannabis is now accessible to many, but it comes with plenty of of environmental considerations.

Cannabis can be a pretty resource intensive plant, and illegal grows are known to demand a ton of water and electricity, so it is important for growers to ensure their operations are green and produce minimal waste. While this won’t come cheap, especially if you’re growing on a larger scale, ecological production, methods will result in a higher quality yield while conserving the land and water systems you rely on.

Power is a crucial resource when you’re growing cannabis because plants rely on light and dark cycles to flower and produce cannabinoids and terpenes. However, giving them all the light they need for months can consume plenty of energy. LEC (aka ceramic metal halide) lighting will provide a spectrum of light that’s as close to the sun as possible without placing a major strain on the grid.

Additionally, you will require a cooling system to control the temperatures. The best option would be water-chilled climate systems, which can manage the temperature and reuse waste energy, feeding back up to 10% additional energy. On top of that, a water-chilled system will switch to outside air when temperatures dip below 45 degrees, saving 60–70% in energy costs.

Water is another important component for anyone wanting to grow cannabis. A cannabis grow will require a great deal of water to ensure the plants are hydrated and can absorb all the nutrients they need to grow and flower. This often results in excessive water waste over a growing season, which can impact the public if the water comes from municipal sources.

Leveraging top-feeding systems that use water with minimal water waste — as little as 5% or less — will increase efficiency while reducing waste and can make your grow facility greener. Avoid artificial pesticides and use Organic Materials Review Institute listed soil to ensure your plants get all the nutrients they need.

Managing waste effectively will also be essential. With a plant as water intensive as cannabis, you will undoubtedly have plenty of wastewater, and a green waste facility will require a high-quality filtration system. Such a system will keep out chlorine, sediment and other toxic wastes from the water supply and ensure that the wastewater only contains organic matter and can be reused.

Additionally, a cannabis business will also have to meet certain security levels regarding plant waste, depending on state and local laws. Those laws could entail locking your Dumpsters and even only putting them outside and unlocking them once removal trucks get on site.

As the marijuana sector in different states matures, we are beginning to see some companies, such as Sonoma Biologics Corp., placing greater emphasis on growing cannabis in an organic way. Hopefully, federal prohibition will end sooner than later so that these companies get the distinction of being certified by the USDA as organic growers.
