420 with CNW — How to Select, Buy Marijuana Edibles Like an Expert

If you have no experience with edibles, you can be easily overwhelmed if you have to purchase some. In the United States, all types of dosages and types of edibles are available, and a bad purchase may lead to bad highs. Despite this, some marijuana users enjoy edibles so much that they choose edibles over all other cannabis consumption methods. Some people assert that edibles are healthier than smoking and vaping with regard to the lungs, plus they produce stronger results. Edibles may also induce a stronger response in the mind or body as well as potentially provide more pain relief.

Still, one can be easily intimidated by edibles. Here are a few basics that a new user should know to help make informed purchasing decisions.

Extracts vs. Cannabutter

You can infuse your food using marijuana in various ways, mainly with extracts and cannabutter. When oil or butter is infused with cannabis, cannabutter is produced. This mixture can then be used to make chocolates, brownies, and more. Cannabutter encompasses the limitations and benefits of the cannabis flower, which provides the consumer with the complete spectrum of cannabinoids. This means edibles made using cannabutter have CBD, THC and more, which results in unpredictable effects.

In contrast, edibles made using extracts are more targeted. Edible makers can isolate CBD or THC in a lab, and add them to edibles later. This allows these manufacturers to make products that are more consistent and reliable. For individuals who have a specific effect in mind, edibles made with extracts are a good option.

To buy or to make?

If you’re new to edibles, then your best option would be to purchase edibles. However, if you would prefer to make your own edibles, it’s vital that you find a recipe that suits you and stick to it. It is important to note that the entire process will take some time, and that your marijuana  harvest must be decarboxylated.

You should also keep in mind that because you’ll be consuming marijuana through your stomach, there may be a delayed response. Therefore, it’s important to be patient and pace yourself. Avoid consuming more edibles because you aren’t feeling the high yet. It takes a while, but it will come.

Taste

Additionally, the taste depends on the edible. Edibles made with extracts usually taste less like weed as compared to those prepared with cannabutter. To make sure what you get is what you prefer, you can ask your budtender to explain in detail the contents of your edible.

One interesting company worthy of giving some attention to is The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER). The company was initially set up to produce the best-tasting enhanced water, and WTER has now branched out into making broad and full-spectrum, hemp-infused products.

420 with CNW — How to Maximize Cannabis Business ROI

After decades of prohibition, cannabis is finally legal in at least 30 U.S states. Although cannabis’s legal landscape still needs plenty of work, the industry has proven to be insanely profitable, with states bringing in millions from cannabis tax revenue. Even as the coronavirus pandemic rages on, slowing down commerce and causing catastrophic damage to the economy, the cannabis sector has set monthly sales records.

Experts project the cannabis sector, which is currently one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, will achieve revenues of more than $30 billion by 2024. However, that doesn’t mean every business that joins the cannabis bandwagon will thrive. Companies must first achieve and maintain profitability, something that can be quite challenging in the nascent cannabis industry. So how can cannabis businesses maximize return on investment (“ROI”)? Here are a few tips:

Keep an eye on the costs. The cannabis industry is young, and new firms tend to have trouble getting a clear understanding of what it costs to create a product, from cultivation to processing and finally sales. This is made even more challenging by the fact that cannabis businesses lack access to cashless banking, making accounting and financial reporting more difficult. Businesses that can overcome these challenges and find a way to congregate all their operational and financial data will be better able to plan and budget their finances.

Visibility across the supply chain is crucial for cannabis businesses. They are required by law to track products from seed to sale and back again, a concept referred to as forward-backward traceability, to prove that regulatory standards are being met every step of the way. Without traceability from seed to sale, businesses may find themselves facing fines, loss of license or even prison time. Investing in effective tracking and reporting technologies will allow these businesses to achieve forward-backward traceability.

Quality and consistency will help a business stand out in an industry that has tough restrictions on marketing. Cannabis businesses are competing with both the prolific black market and each other, and consistently producing high-quality products is the best way to attract — and retain — customers. Customers expect both premium and value-priced products to maintain a high quality because, at the end of the day, black market cannabis is cheaper and more accessible. Giving customers a quality product on a consistent basis is the only way to get customers to fork over that extra premium.

Make technology a friend. Adopt financial reporting and accounting software as soon as possible. Something scalable and affordable that will be able to adapt and grow as the business grows. Integrating technology into a business right from the start will allow that business to automate processes, streamline workflows, provide visibility and insight, increase quality and consistency, and reduce errors.

Pure Extracts Technologies Inc. is one cannabis sector player you should watch. This plant-based extraction firm recently piqued interest in the psychedelic mushrooms space, a segment that not many companies were prepared to take advantage of.

420 with CNW — NJ Recreational Pot Sales Could Start Within Weeks, Senator Suggests

Sales in the state of New Jersey are projected to increase quickly if voters approve a cannabis legalization referendum on their ballots in the coming week. A plan unveiled by a top lawmaker would even allow the already existing medical cannabis dispensaries in the state to start selling to adults aged 21 years and above within a month of the election.

Nick Scutari, chairman of the state Senate Judiciary Committee, stated in an interview that the most important thing would be to allow people to purchase legal marijuana immediately. However, those who would prefer to grow their marijuana at home wouldn’t be as lucky, seeing as individuals would not be permitted to obtain cannabis from homegrown or illicit sources.

In the interview, Scutari discussed what to expect if voters of New Jersey approved Public Question 1, which would legalize the growing, processing and sale of retail cannabis in the state. The measure is made up of five brief sentences, leaving most of the details up to lawmakers and regulators.

Scutari states that the first step would be for legislators to pass the legislation, starting with setting rules for the new cannabis market. He stated that he wanted the laws to be completed in November, which is when the state would be having the legalization pass.

The plan might be easier said than done though, mainly because dispensaries would be required to certify that they could still meet the current medical patient demand. Additionally, producers would need to confirm whether they are able to increase their supply in order to meet that goal.

The assistant commissioner of the Department of Health, Jeff Brown, stated in a separate interview that if the measure was passed tomorrow, the medical marijuana program, which he oversees, wouldn’t have an operator that would be ready to begin selling adult-use cannabis. He explained that the industry as a collective would have to speed up the whole process to make that happen, especially if companies were to be considered capable of selling in a potential adult-use market.

With dispensaries in the state facing complaints of product shortages and long lines, which have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, this makes the goal that much harder.

Currently, the state has issued licenses to only 12 firms to cultivate, process and retail medical cannabis to more than 90,000 registered patients. However, all may not be lost. A survey conducted earlier this month revealed that 65% of voters in New Jersey were in favor of the measure, with 6% undecided and the remainder opposed.

An interesting cannabis firm that you should watch is Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD). This California-based delivery service provider is enjoying the uptick in delivery services after stores started curtailing their activities in order to adhere to social-distancing guidelines as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

420 with CNW — DEA Seeks Contractor with Capacity to Burn Tons of Cannabis Daily

Recently, the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) reached out for help to assist in burning about 1,000 pounds of cannabis per hour for eight hours straight. Each year, the DEA seizes tons of raw marijuana and millions of cannabis plants, which are usually destroyed. The contractor that performs this is responsible to oversee the burning of cannabis as well as other controlled substances that have been confiscated as evidence in drug cases.

The DEA stated that it would inspect the incinerator used in the process to ensure that no drug residue remained. The work description was posted earlier this month in a “sources sought notice.”

The post states that the description was not a request and doesn’t require the government to award a contract. It goes on to add that the DEA is carrying out market research and encourages all businesses, small and large scale, to respond to the notice. The statement that accompanies the post provides a behind-the-scenes view of how the DEA destroys the seized drugs.

Normal boxes are said to weigh between 40 to 60 pounds but can weigh four to five times that. The contraband may also come in on forklifts, cargo vans, tractor trailers and semi-trucks.

The description adds that the drugs are usually tightly packed “bales” or ‘”bricks” and are packaged in various materials, including oil/grease, plastic evidence bags, packing tape, plastic wrap, wrapping paper, cardboard and others. Contractors are expected to destroy the packaging as well.

There must be no smoke buildup, and proper ventilation is needed in order to avoid potential contact highs. Other mandates include regular drug checks for all personnel, mandatory background checks, and the careful placement of closed-circuit cameras that record the entire process of destroying the contraband. It should be noted that the DEA reserves the right to access these cameras.

Contractors and armed DEA agents will be in attendance on days that burning has been scheduled. Additionally, the contractor and on-site personnel will be required to hold all the information acquired under the DEA contract private. The information provided should only be used in performing the tasks outlined in the contract and should not be disclosed in any manner.

The work description concludes by stating that the work would start on January 1, 2021, and the contract would expire in 2026 — unless it is terminated sooner. The deadline to send in information for any contractor that would like to apply for the job was October 23.

420 with CNW — Outdoor Marijuana Growers in California to Label Products According to Region

In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law four bills affecting the state’s cannabis industry. One of those bills, dubbed Senate Bill 67, allows outdoor cannabis growers to brand and market their products by highlighting where and how those products are produced. As long as the cannabis products come from cannabis plants cultivated in the ground, or were grown without the use of a structure and without the use of artificial lighting in the canopy area, they can claim an “appellation of origin.”

This means that if cannabis farmers in California grow cannabis in the ground without any artificial light or shelter, they will be allowed to brand and market their products as coming from a specific region, similar to wineries in Napa and Sonoma. This will go a long way in helping small growers distinguish their crops. “Having the ability to show people the fingerprints of the place is helpful for us,” says Drew Barber, owner of East Mill Creek Farms in Humboldt County.

Such sellers are hoping that customers will be willing to pay a little extra for craft-grown marijuana produced organically in the state. Barber, for instance, is quite proud of the smaller carbon footprint his cannabis operation leaves. He grows his crops in the sun with no additional structures, and uses compost from the sheep and cattle on the farm to fertilize the soil. “We think it’s really important for people to experience the cannabis we grow out in that nature,” he says.

His farm, East Mills Creek, is a 10,000-square-foot grow that lies in a remote valley along the Pacific Coast. Situated on the edge of the marine layer, the farm gets windy in the summer. Barber says the wind causes secondary lant compounds to produce terpenes and other cannabinoids. His hope is that environmentally conscious customers choose his products over those grown in a less sustainable manner.

“If you like to drink wine, we can think about the actions we take in our lives to create a climate to grow grapes,” he says. “The same is true of cannabis.”

Hanna Wyte, co-owner of Emerald Queen Farms in Humboldt County, agrees. She sees appellations as a way for the young cannabis industry to cause less harm to a planet that’s already in the grip of human-led climate change. “Ten years ago, we had weather where you would really be able to time your harvest and crop to produce sun-grown cannabis,” she says.

But things are different now, and the weather is much more unpredictable than it used to be. Like Barber, Whyte hopes that customers will be willing to fork out for a product that, despite such conditions, has been grown organically and has a smaller carbon footprint.

420 with CNW — Massachusetts Regulators Make Bold Decision on New Delivery Businesses

Although the state of Massachusetts allows the delivery of both medical and recreational marijuana, creating a system for delivering adult-use marijuana has proven to be quite a challenge. Recently, state marijuana regulators announced that they will be moving forward with plans to allow a new class of cannabis delivery business. The move has been met with both praise and criticism from stakeholders.

On Oct. 20, the state’s Cannabis Control Commission (“CCC”) approved some changes to its draft regulations, allowing standalone cannabis retailers without storefronts to deliver products to customers’ homes. This comes a year after the state allowed the delivery of recreational marijuana but failed to create a regulatory framework to make that delivery work.

Over the months after delivery of recreational cannabis was allowed, advocates have argued that permitting delivery would help licensed businesses compete with the black market, which essentially offers free delivery, on top of reducing the barriers to entry for social equity candidates. The CCC ultimately agreed, creating a new business class that would allow licensed operators to act as a standalone company as well as buy inventory from wholesale suppliers and store it in their own warehouses.

Only applicants in the Cannabis Control Commission’s equity program will be eligible for the courier and delivery license, available for a minimum of three years, a move designed to help communities that were disproportionately affected by the decades-long war on drugs gain a foothold in the industry. According to CCC Chairman Steve Hoffman, however, not everyone is cheering the changes.

For instance, Commonwealth Dispensary Association president David Torrisi has stated that his group is “very disappointed” with the decision. “I don’t think the commission has done enough analysis to determine the impact on the supply chain and the marketplace,” he said. The new direct-to-consumer model has also been criticized by the Massachusetts Municipal Association, which represents city and town governments, raising the same concerns as a bipartisan group of 19 lawmakers.

“The draft regulations create a shadow direct to the consumer marketplace not governed by the licensing requirements and regulations of marijuana retailers,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the Cannabis Control Commission. “These draft regulations also significantly change the landscape for cities and towns after many had already engaged in intensive, community-wide conversations about the number and types of marijuana establishments their communities wished to host.”

According to the CCC commissioner, the new model may involve some “unknowns,” but it is crucial as it puts a “dent” in the illicit cannabis market and uplifts the communities that were affected most by the drug war. “We still have a lot of work to do on equity, but I would say this is a giant step forward,” said Hoffman.

An interesting cannabis company you should watch is Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD). This California-based marijuana delivery company also supports the quick-service restaurant industry, and the company’s prospects seem bright with the ongoing pandemic, which has boosted the activities of delivery companies.

420 with CNW — Study Discovers Cannabis Use Disorder Has Biological, Genetic Foundation

A global study that investigated the predisposition of individuals to cannabis use disorder has determined a link between a region of DNA near the FOXP2 gene and cannabis use disorder (“CUD”), previously associated with risk-taking behavior.

A press release notes that researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine studied DNA and other data from about 360,000 individuals who did not have a CUD diagnosis and 21,000 individuals who were diagnosed with CUD.

The research team determined two regions in human DNA — the CHRNA2 gene, which has previously been associated with nicotine addiction and CUD, and the FOXP2 gene. Researchers discovered that both these genes contributed to the risk of becoming dependent on marijuana.

Arpana Agrawal, a professor of psychiatry and the senior study investigator, noted that in roughly 50% of individuals who used marijuana, genetics played a role in those who developed problems with marijuana use. He pointed out that genetic pathways could be used to develop better treatments for marijuana addiction in the future.

The research findings, which were published in “Lancet Psychiatry,” show that some individuals may be vulnerable to CUD before they even smoke their first joints. The reason for this, the researchers note, is because children who had higher genetic susceptibility for severe problems with marijuana were found to have, on average, a marginally lower volume of white matter in their brains. Researchers mentioned behavioral factors such as educational attainment, schizophrenia and risk-taking to be of interest.

In the statement, the first author, Emma Johnson, states that while susceptibility to using marijuana is correlated with higher educational attainment, genetic liability for problematic cannabis use is associated with less education. She adds that it’s also possible that those who use marijuana on occasion but develop no addiction may be genetically predisposed to other protective influences, such as more years of education.

Agrawal observed that many individuals may consider marijuana to be less addictive in comparison to other drugs. However, research findings clearly show that individuals can become dependent on marijuana and that CUD has biological and genetic foundations.

The research study notes that the possibility of genetic liability to cannabis use disorder in individuals who were unexposed has major implications for the public health sector. Another study published in “Lancet Psychiatry” noted that CBD could be used as a new treatment to help treat cannabis use disorder. However, it is unclear what doses might be safe or effective.

420 with CNW — Senators Say DEA Rule on THC Content of Hemp Contravenes Congressional Intent

In August, the Drug Enforcement Administration (“DEA”) unveiled proposed rules that would officially put the agency in line with the 2018 farm bill. The legislation legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its extracts, allowing farmers across the country to grow hemp under state and tribal programs. However, the federal agency’s interim final rule on hemp has been met with resistance from activists who argue it contradicts the 2018 farm bill and will hamper the growth of the nascent hemp industry.

Last week, a pair of Oregon senators sent a letter to the DEA demanding changes to its proposed hemp regulations. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley say that despite the DEA’s claim that its interim final rule (IFR) is only about compliance, the proposal “does significantly more.”

“The IFR treats hemp as a Schedule I controlled substance at any point its THC content exceeds 0.3% THC,” they write. Delta-9 THC is the main component responsible for cannabis’s psychoactive effects, and the 2018 farm bill requires that legal hemp has less than 0.3% delta-9 THC. “However, when Congress passed the 2018 farm bill, we understood that the intermediate stages of hemp processing can cause hemp extracts to temporarily exceed 0.3% THC, which is why we defined hemp based on its delta-9 THC level.

“In effect, the IFR criminalizes the intermediate steps of hemp processing, which is wholly inconsistent with Congress’s clearly stated purpose and text of the 2018 Farm Bill,” the letter continued.

According to the DEA’s proposed rules, businesses that produce hemp products may find themselves breaking the law, and they could be subject to enforcement actions if THC levels increase beyond 0.3%, even temporarily. Additionally, the DEA’s regulation states that all “synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols remain schedule I controlled substances,” locking out delta-8 THC. Delta-8 THC is converted from CBD through the use of a catalyst, a process that could be interpreted as a synthetic production process, making delta-8 THC illegal.

This is the second time the DEA has received a congressional request concerning its interim final rule on hemp. On October 20, nine members of Congress also sent a letter to the agency urging it to revise its proposed hemp regulations. Led by Reps David Joyce and Denver Riggleman, the members of Congress argued that the DEA’s provision which stated that “any such material that contains greater than 0.3% of delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis remains controlled in Schedule I.

“Our offices have received countless calls from constituents involved in the hemp industry who are extremely fearful that simply following the provisions of the Farm Bill will result in criminal liability under the IFR,” the letter continues. “The IFR will likely have the effect of inhibiting these nascent state hemp programs, thereby harming those American companies and workers who chose to pursue careers in the hemp industry and made significant investments to effectuate those aspirations.”

Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) is an interesting company you should watch in the marijuana industry. The company focuses on using high-end and selectively bred genetics to produce premium marijuana products.

During the same period, sales of CBD products at c-stores and gas stores grew by more than 2,275%, topping out $122 million. The research also noted that CBD-infused drinks, tinctures and topicals are growth opportunities in the channel. BettermentRS will work closely with our sales team to introduce our brands to large accounts, including aforementioned, 7-Eleven and YesWay. . . .As a trusted national brand, we now offer a robust line of high-quality, lab-tested CBD topical and ingestible products.
