420 with CNW – Hemp-Based Meat: The future of Plant-Based Diets

The Sustainable Food Co. from New Zealand, a zero-waste catering company, has developed hemp-based meat, the first of its kind in the world. It plans to introduce it to the market as a sustainable substitute to meat in early 2021.

This company is also the producer of other plant-based meats. Some of these plant-based meats have hemp in them for its nutritional value. The company will roll out its hemp-based burgers in collaboration with Greenfern Industries, a medical marijuana producer, through its Craft Meat Co. brand.

Kyran Rei, the co-founder of Sustainable Food Co. revealed in an interview earlier this year that all of their consumer goods use hemp as it is very rich in nutrition and is considered to be a nutritionally complete food source globally.

The company has been testing and developing the hemp-burger for several months now and in cooperation with the Massey University’s Ridley Institute’s researchers, they concluded their research after the founders, Justin Lemmens and Kyran Rei decided on different products that were environmentally friendly and were also rich in dietary fiber and protein.

Kyran Rei added that despite the main focus of the company not being to create an alternative that is an exact duplicate of meat, he relates the taste of the hemp-burger to the experience of eating chicken.

Dan Casey, Managing Director at Greenfern Industries when asked about the collaboration stated that they partnered up with the Riddet Institute for about a year for background research as well as hemp product development. Here, they used obtained cake, seed and oil from high-quality hemp for the end result.

The hemp Sustainable Foods Co. used in the hemp-burger is also sourced locally and the highly sustainable hemp growing techniques that Greenfern Industries uses are a plus. Additionally, the plastic packaging to be used will be made from recycled materials.

Furthermore, a plant-based diet minimizes the carbon footprint that is created by the meat industry. With the public becoming more conscious of the destructive effect on the environment that meat production has, plant-based meat as well as dairy substitutes have grown in popularity and use in the developed world.

The Sustainable Foods Co. plans to carry out various product trials in the remainder of this year so as to be ready for next year’s launch both for exporting and for the local market in New Zealand.

It is these sorts of innovative hemp products that make sector players like The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) believe that there is no limit as what products can be made from hemp.

420 with CNW – Could Marijuana Odor Control Technology Be the Next Big Thing?

If you’ve ever interacted with marijuana, then you know it has a very distinct, very identifiable smell. Whether it’s still in the ground or being smoked, marijuana produces a strong, pungent smell that’s sure to turn heads, especially given the legal landscape. If you are growing industrial hemp, which smells just like marijuana but won’t get you high, you may find yourself nursing losses due to thieves who think it is cannabis or even worse, facing federal charges from law enforcement who have confused it for cannabis.

So why does cannabis produce such a strong smell? The answer lies inside it, from a class of chemicals called terpenes or terpenoids. Different varieties of cannabis contain varying concentrations of terpenes, and they are responsible for the spectrum of smells cannabis plants are known to produce. But while these aromas may be welcoming to some folks, the nascent cannabis industry and the industrial hemp industry have had to deal with lawsuits and complaints about marijuana’s smell.

The wine industry, for instance, has complained that the smell coming from large scale marijuana farms are changing the smell and flavor of their wines. In 2015, a 10th Circuit Court in Colorado ruled in favor of a family who complained about the “noxious odors” coming from a cannabis venture next door. They said the pungent smell damaged their property value and the court agreed, allowing them to sue for triple damages under federal racketeering law. This set a precedent that private citizens could use federal law to topple locally licensed cannabis businesses due to the plant’s distinctive smell, and there were similar lawsuits in Oregon and Massachusetts.

This is an issue that could potentially cripple the nascent marijuana and industrial hemp industries before they have a chance to grow. A single plant can produce an odor strong enough to be smelt from meters away, so you can imagine what a farm or a warehouse full of marijuana will smell like. Although plenty of states have legalized cannabis for either medicinal or recreational use, it is still federally prohibited, and the last thing you want to be facing as a marijuana farmer is federal charges.

As more states legalize marijuana and advocates and lawmakers push for federal legalization, finding a way to contain marijuana’s infamous smell will be integral to the industry’s survival. And as the industry is expected to be worth $73.6 billion by 2027, whoever does it will be in for a memorable payday.

What measures would companies like Pure Extract Technologies Inc. recommend for managing marijuana odors? That is the million-dollar question!

420 with CNW – Congressman Introduces Bill to Promote Hemp Industry

Almost two years after Congress legalized industrial hemp and allowed farmers across the country to start growing the crop under state and tribal programs, an outgoing congressman has filed a bill that would create a variety of programs that would help new entrants into the industry grow their businesses. Dubbed the ‘Hemp Opportunity Zone Act’ the bill was filed by Rep. Denver Riggleman. One of its main objectives is the creation of “opportunity zones,” areas where farmers who cultivate hemp will be eligible for tax benefits.

These are census-designated low-income areas that are considered economically distressed, with the governor making the designation and the Treasury deciding whether or not to certify it. The Hemp Opportunity Zone Act will promote investments in areas that don’t see much investor activity by allowing investors to defer capital gains taxes as long as they invest their funds in an opportunity zone business.

According to Rep. Riggleman, who lost his primary re-nomination bid and has just a few months left in Congress, hemp farming is a new and thriving industry. “By providing these tax incentives, hemp growers in Virginia and the 5th District are primed to lead based on their historic production of tobacco,” he says. Jonathan Miller, general counsel of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable says that they “are reviewing the legislation now but if it indeed serves to open up investment in hard-hit farming and small business communities, it would be a welcome relief for an industry that has been struggling through the COVID pandemic and federal burdens imposed by FDA, USDA, and now the DEA.

Although treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin weighed in on the marijuana industry’s eligibility for the opportunity zone program earlier this year, he stated that it is “not the intent of the opportunity zones that if there is this conflict (between state and federal laws) that has not been cleared that, for now, we should not have those businesses in the opportunity zones.”

Aside from clarifying hemp businesses’ eligibility for the opportunity zone program, the bill would also create a “hemp farmer start-up tax credit” equal to 10% of the cash rent paid for the land used for production or 15% of the “crop share rent so paid by the taxpayer. For farmers to be eligible, they need to have less than $25 million in gross receipts for the last taxable year. Additionally, the bill would also establish a “small hemp farmer credit” that would allow businesses with less than $250,000 in gross receipts for the last taxable year to “obtain credit equal to 30% of the basis of hemp farming property placed in service.”

Experts say such a law would go a long way towards addressing the cries of the cannabis sector, including companies like Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD).

420 with CNW – Cannabis Sales in Oregon Soaring Amidst the Pandemic

In July, Oregon achieved the highest cannabis sales ever, showing just how well the marijuana industry is thriving, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The State of Oregon recorded approximately $106 million in recreational and medical marijuana sales. According to a report by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission that was released recently, this is the third month in a row that the state has made cannabis sales of over $100 million.

OLCC broke down the marijuana sales statistics based on the different types of cannabis products that had been sold and discovered that marijuana bud purchases had significantly grown during the coronavirus outbreak. In the month of February, bud sales accounted for roughly $40 million while in July, that rose to about $65 million.

The report states that recreational consumers as well as medical cannabis patients have been consuming more cannabis since February this year, although the data also shows that the adult-use market has been especially active as well.

Beau Kilmer, the director of the RAND Drug Policy Research Center hypothesized that the reason for the sharp increase came about as a result of individuals stocking up during the COVID-19 crisis.

Additionally, the Portland City Council has sanctioned an amendment to a budget that was proposed in June that would deprive cannabis-generated monies from the Portland Police Bureau.

It seems Oregon isn’t the only state that is experiencing record-breaking cannabis sales during this pandemic period. In Illinois, state officials have reported a significant rise in purchases month-over-month. For the month of July, adult-use marijuana sales were about $61 million which surpassed June’s record sales of $47 million.

In a recent interview, Governor J.B. Pritzker’s leading cannabis advisor referred to the cannabis industry as both pandemic and recession proof.

Amid the pandemic, many legislators have argued that the legalization of cannabis could be a possible solution to neutralize the losses experienced in various parts of the country on account of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Just last week, the governor of Pennsylvania, Thomas Wolf (D) urged lawmakers to legalize marijuana to help the state’s economy recover financially from the pandemic’s impact while Michelle Lujan Grisham (D), the Governor of New Mexico, stated in May that the state would look into every alternative that would offer economic relief, including legalizing marijuana.

Over in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy stated in July that legalizing marijuana could assist in economic recovery of the state while advocating for racial justice as well. Analysts say these economic benefits are the same ones that sector players like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) have always mentioned as huge benefits of a regulated cannabis market.

420 with CNW – Virginia Senate Passes Bill Ending Marijuana Odor Police Stops

As millions of Americans from every corner of the country flood the streets to protest against the over-policing of black and brown communities, the Virginia Senate has approved a bill that would greatly advance that cause. Introduced by Sen. Louise Lucas, Senate Bill 5029 would prohibit police search and seizures based solely on the odor of marijuana. The legislation, which passed with a 21-15 vote, has been lauded by activists who say it is a small step towards ending the aggressive over policing certain communities have had to endure for decades.

“This is a small but important step to decriminalizing black and brown bodies of being targeted by this longtime policing tool, which was really created by politicizing the war on drugs,” says Chelsea Higgs Wise, executive director of Marijuana Justice, a nonprofit that is pushing for the statewide legalization of marijuana. Even after the state decriminalized marijuana back in July, she says, police stops initiated on the smell of marijuana have continued to adversely affect minority groups.

According to 2018 data from the ACLU, black people are more than three times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession in Virginia compared to white people. “The odor of marijuana is something that our undocumented community is anxious about because it’s life or death and separation from their families,” Higgs Wise says. She adds that although there is still a long way to go before demands for full marijuana legalization are met, right now she wants legislators to focus on ending the enforcement of remaining marijuana-related penalties.

Possession of up to an ounce of marijuana in Virginia will result in a $25 civil penalty. Before the state decriminalized marijuana, possession for having up to half an ounce would have resulted in a $500 criminal fine and 30 days in jail. She says that true reform would require the clearing of records, releasing people jailed for marijuana offenses and eliminating the $25 fine. “ALL of that has to stop to meet the full demand of legalization and fully, truly decriminalizing marijuana and black and brown bodies in the eyes of the police.”

However, not everyone agrees with Higgs Wise. The Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police has stated its opposition to the bill, with Executive Director Dana Schrad saying that “enacting this type of legislation allows and promotes smoking of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle, which is a fundamental disregard for maintaining a safe driving environment for motorists.”

Though the process of rolling back decades of marijuana prohibition is slow, analysts believe that sector players like The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) celebrate every success scored in chipping away at the legacy of the war on drugs.

420 with CNW – Top USC Researchers: THC In Cannabis May Be Used to Treat Fatal Coronavirus Complication

According to three recently released studies, top researchers at the University of South Carolina reckon that THC, a chemical found in cannabis and causes an individual to get ‘high’, may be used to treat a fatal complication resulting from a coronavirus infection.

Co-published by Prakash Nagarkatti, USC Vice President for Research, the studies discovered that THC, a potent and mind-altering chemical, is capable of preventing a damaging immune response that leads to ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) that gives to the growth of healthy lung bacteria. The tests were done on mice.

The studies were published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, Frontiers in Pharmacology as well as the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. The briefs’ stated that the mice were given a toxin which prompted the negative immune reaction that caused ARDS, then injected with THC.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome works by overriding the immune system of the body and starts damaging the body’s lungs as well as other organs. According to a study carried out by the National Institutes of Health this year, the average mortality rate of ARDS is 43%. Among survivors who were not fatally affected, it may result in long-term scarring of lung tissue.

Nagarkatti stated that in the three distinct studies and the dozens of experiments that were carried out, 100% of the rodents that were given THC pulled through. Nagarkatti noted that he was impressed with the efficacy of how potent THC was in helping treat ARDS, despite the fact that it had only been done in mice.

He also added that as of now, there was no drug approved by the FDA that could be used to treat Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. He recommended that given the effectiveness of the experiments, health officials should begin human trials using THC.

Nevertheless, this does not make it a good idea for individuals to smoke cannabis if they believe they have coronavirus. This is because THC represses the immune system’s response which may make the coronavirus infection more severe.

Nagarkatti added that it was important to note that their research should not be interpreted as “Cannabis is good for coronavirus.” His research also shows that THC could be used (if approved for human trials) for a patient who has developed severe ARDS but not for all coronavirus patients.

These studies were produced by both Mitzki Nagarkatti and Prakash Nagarkatti, USC’s top researchers. The Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology department is chaired by Mitzki.

This news that THC could help patients with COVID-19 is likely to be applauded by cannabis companies like Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) who believe the full benefits of marijuana are yet to be discovered.
