CannabisNewsBreaks – Cannabis Global, Inc. (MCTC) Adds Cannabinol (“CBN”) to R&D Effort for Project Varin

Cannabis Global (OTC: MCTC), a cannabinoid and hemp extract science-forward company developing infusion and delivery technologies, today announced the expansion of its Project Varin research and development effort to include Cannabinol (“CBN”) under the umbrella of patent pending polymeric nanoparticle and nanofiber technologies developed for Tetrahydrocannabivarin (“THC-V”). According to the update, the first stage of Project Varin produced high load particles of pure THC-V, allowing Cannabis Global to now move into production of commercial quantities. CBN has been added to the production protocol as part of this second phase. “The addition of CBN to the Project Varin production schedule is an important test of our internally developed technologies,” Arman Tabatabaei, CEO of Cannabis Global, said in the news release. “We believe the production parameters developed for THC-V will apply to CBN and other manufactured cannabinoids and we will be testing this premise on our currently scheduled manufacturing run. This will be an important test of the flexibility of our manufacturing process and if successful should allow us low cost leadership over a variety of rare cannabinoids.”

420 with CNW – Research Shows Marijuana Users Not at Higher Risk of Workplace Accidents

For the past few years, cannabis has become more mainstream as attitudes and perceptions towards it change. Plenty of states have legalized either medical and recreational use or both, making it widely accessible. However, not everyone is on the cannabis train, and plenty of employers aren’t willing to hire staff who indulge in marijuana, either medically or to unwind.

They have been encouraged in part by several studies that have found a correlation between marijuana use and workplace accidents. The results of such studies have come into question after new research showed that marijuana users aren’t at a higher risk of workplace accidents. Titled Systemic Review of Cannabis Use and Risk of Occupational Injury,’ the study was published in the journal Substance Use and Misuse and it found that adults who consume marijuana are no more likely to suffer injuries at work than employees who did not consume cannabis.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia conducted a systematic review of scientific papers assessing the potential links between marijuana consumption and occupational accidents. According to the researchers, “few studies employed research designs that ensured that cannabis use preceded the occupational injury. Additionally, they say, other studies failed to adequately assess or control for confounding variables, such as the concurrent use of alcohol or other psychoactive substances.

They concluded that due to these limitations, “the current body of evidence does not provide sufficient evidence to support the position that cannabis users are at increased risk of occupational injury.” A similar study carried out by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2017 concluded that “there is no or insufficient evidence to support a statistical association between cannabis use and occupational accidents or injuries.”

This comes at a time when advocates have been fighting against workplace discrimination targeting employees who consume cannabis outside of work. The fact that current drug tests cannot prove exactly when THC was introduced into the system means that cannabis consumed over the weekend can get you in trouble even after it’s already worn off and you are 100% sober.

“In recent months, lawmakers in several municipalities including New York CityRichmond, Virginia, and Washington DC have enacted legislation limiting the use of marijuana-specific pre-employment drug screening,” says NORML, who first reported on the study. “Both Maine and Nevada have enacted state-specific legislation barring certain employers from refusing to hire a worker solely because he or she tested positive for cannabis on a pre-employment drug screen.”

Industry watchers believe that industry players like Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) hope that as more research about the safety of cannabis becomes available, members of the public will no longer be arbitrarily discriminated against for consuming a product with hardly any risks.

420 with CNW – Why Smart Entrepreneurs Need to Consider the Marijuana Beverage Industry

The cannabis sector is without a doubt one of the top industries to keep an eye on. Still fairly young, the industry has proven that it can be quite profitable despite the myriad of challenges it still faces. However, despite having very encouraging projections, the industry will soon be filled with sellers who want a piece of the loot, and smart entrepreneurs will have to find new ways to stay on top.

One such area is cannabis beverages, a new and exciting sub-industry that takes all the natural benefits that cannabis brings and puts them in a bottle. Well, it’s not exactly new as people in places like India and China were using cannabis for centuries before it became so controversial, but it’s an exciting part of cannabis culture still. These days, people are looking for products that have natural ingredients, low caloric counts, experimental flavors, craft appeal, and offer functional benefits. Marijuana beverages check most of the boxes.

For a long time, the technology to process marijuana beverages was quite limited. Cannabinoids, the chemicals responsible for cannabis’ effects are fat-soluble, and they do not mix easily with water-based beverages. Thus cannabis sellers had to look for other avenues, settling on cannabis-infused gummies, brownies, and other confectioneries. However, the technology required to pull off cannabis-infused beverages is catching up. Technologies like nano emulsification and using cyclodextrins allow the creation of high quality, fast-acting, and longer-lasting cannabis beverages.

One thing cannabis beverages have over alcohol, sodas, and energy drinks is that they are a lot healthier. As consumers become more conscious of what they put on and in their bodies, they are becoming increasingly aware of the potential harm things like alcohol and energy drinks can cause. Cannabis, on the other hand, works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (“ECS”), a nervous system that helps maintain homeostasis or internal balance of the body, and consuming cannabis helps boost the ECS and bring you closer to internal balance.

In fact, counties that offer residents a legal choice between alcohol and marijuana have seen a 12-15% decline in alcohol. Given the choice, consumers will ultimately choose the healthier option. And unlike smoking cannabis, which you probably shouldn’t be doing in public, beverages have no stigma attached to them. You’re free to have a drink anytime, anywhere, and without judgment. This, coupled with the fact that cannabis beverages are healthier than most drinks on the shelves and they offer a variety of health benefits makes them a very attractive and profitable option for entrepreneurs.

Analysts assert that the major marijuana industry actors like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) are looking to go big in the beverages segment in the coming years.

HempNewsBreaks – SinglePoint Inc. (SING) Leverages Rising Popularity of 1606 Hemp Cigarettes

SinglePoint (OTCQB: SING) recently announced plans to expand the launch of its 1606 Hemp cigarettes with a new six-pack countertop display (http://cnw.fm/9dOOJ). An article discussing the company’s new hemp initiatives reads, “‘The great thing about the hemp cigarette is, unlike tobacco, the hemp product can sit up on the counter,’ commented Lambrecht in the interview. Made from broad-spectrum, American-grown, harvested and cured hemp flower, the filtered pre-rolls are made with less than 0.3% THC and contain nearly 20% CBD in each pre-roll, providing a smooth alternative to tobacco products. With a fast-growing fan base of loyal users, the pre-rolls have seen a sales growth rate of 133% this quarter over the previous quarter along with a 233% growth in sales when compared with the same point last month. . . . ‘I was in that business for 30 years and actually took a cigar distribution company public on the Nasdaq,’ explained Lambrecht. ‘We’re really excited about this box that we developed because this box is going to be able to sit right up at the counter. We’re going to be sending that out to our extensive store list, so I think in the upcoming weeks I’m hopefully going to really have some big results on some sales from some big chains and distributors that are going to take this product on.’”

420 with CNW – There’s No Link Between Marijuana Use and Increased Stroke Risk, Study Finds

As more states legalize marijuana and its use becomes more prevalent, there have been numerous studies about its potential risks and benefits. In particular, there have been a number of conflicting results regarding marijuana use and increased stroke risk, with some studies stating that it reduces the risk while others argue that it exponentially increases the risk. According to a recent study by a team of neurologists at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, there is no link between increased stroke risk and marijuana use.

The team analyzed data from nearly 10,000 individuals and they found that cannabis use does not increase your risk of having a stroke. “Previous studies that investigated cannabis use and risk of stroke have had conflicting results, some showing a decreased risk and others showing a greatly increased risk,” says Carmela San Luis, MD, lead investigator and a member of the American Academy of Neurology (“AAN”).

“Our observational study looked specifically at recent cannabis use by reviewing drug testing data for people admitted to the hospital. While more research is needed with larger numbers of people, our study lends support to the studies showing that cannabis use does not increase the risk of stroke.” San Luis and a team of colleagues from the University of Mississippi in Jackson designed the study to assess potential correlations between marijuana use (a positive cannabinoid urine drug screen on admission) and a diagnosis of an acute ischemic stroke.

They studied de-identified data from 9,350 patients who were 18 years old and over admitted in the University of Mississippi Medical Center from 2015 -2017, and only 18% of the patients tested positive for cannabis use. Ischemic stroke was observed in 7.91% (130) of the 1,643 individuals who tested positive for cannabis and in 15.66% (1207) of those who tested negative. The database also granted the researchers access to information related to age, ethnicity, sickle cell disease, family history of stroke, hypertension status, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, carotid artery stenosis and other cardiac conditions. They were included as confounders in the researchers’ multivariate logistic regression analysis.

San Luis notes that the study only captured whether people had used marijuana recently and that it did not collect information on how much marijuana was consumed or any other information about their history of prior use.

“Our research adds to the list of studies with conflicting results, so it’s important to continue to investigate stroke risk and cannabis use. Future studies are now needed in larger groups of people that not only include data from drug screenings but also from dosing amounts and a person’s history of cannabis use.”

Industry watchers say the findings of such studies are of interest to sector players like SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING) since the industry would greatly benefit once reliable third-party information is widely available on the various myths and misconceptions circulating about marijuana.

420 with CNW – Why Some People May Not See Results After Consuming CBD

Over the past few years, cannabidiol (“CBD”) has gained the reputation of a cure all, and marketers have leaned quite heavily into it. Plenty of companies that process and sell CBD have taken to making all kinds of medical claims to attract customers. However, the truth of the matter is that a large portion of the evidence backing CBD’s medical abilities is anecdotal, and the cannabis extract definitely won’t fix all your health issues.

It has become immensely popular in recent years, with CBD gummies being the third most searched for food in 2018. What a lot of marketing campaigns fail to say is that for the most part, CBD reacts with different people in different ways, and another person’s experience with CBD will not exactly mirror your own. So why do some people fail to see tangible results after consuming CBD?

For starters, CBD reacts with the endocannabinoid system (“ECS”), a peripheral nervous system in charge of maintaining the homeostasis or internal balance of the body. It is made up of individual cannabinoid receptors spread throughout the body, and everyone’s ECS is unique in both its make up and level of functionality. Like a fingerprint, no two are alike, so everyone’s reaction will be slightly different based on their ECS.

While smoking or vaping cannabis has a more or less instantaneous effect, CBD can take a while, depending on the method of application. Topicals will offer quick results but if you’re ingesting your CBD, it may take you weeks of daily consistent use for the effects to kick in. A lot of the time, new users will approach it with an ‘instant gratification’ mindset, and seeing no results after a few doses, drop too soon.

Additionally, you may just be using the wrong product. Despite being only a few years old, the CBD space is filled with a huge variety of products. In broad terms, there are the full-spectrum products, which contain a host of other cannabinoids and terpenes, and there are the isolates, where all the other chemicals are stripped away to leave only CBD. Full-spectrum products are more popular as the sum of all the cannabinoids and terpenes work together in a complementary way in what has been termed the ‘entourage effect.’

Like most medicines, CBD doesn’t work in a vacuum, and you will have to put in effort for it to be effective. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and consistent CBD use will supplement your healthy lifestyle.

The variation in the way different people respond to CBD may be the reason why industry actors like Round Meadow Holdings Corp. and Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) encourage customers to read all the available literature before choosing a CBD product to buy.

420 with CNW – Federal Financial Regulator Says Marijuana Banking is a Difficult Issue

Despite being federally prohibited, the state-legal marijuana industry has been growing steadily for the past few years. Things haven’t been rosy for the often controversial sector, and the fact that marijuana is illegal at the federal level has made it challenging for businesses to operate. Admittedly, the biggest hurdle that the industry has faced is lack of access to banking.

Fearing legal retaliation from the federal government, most banking institutions avoid marijuana businesses, locking them out of accessing credit or loans and forcing them to operate on a cash-only basis. There have been numerous calls from stakeholders and advocates to rectify this situation, but according to the head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”), marijuana banking represents the ‘most challenging issue’ she has encountered at the agency.

“At a federal level it is still an illegal substance, and at many state levels, it’s now legal, and it’s legal to frankly bank it at a state level. And so banks find themselves caught between the federal regulatory regime and the state,” says FDIC Chair Jelena McWilliams. While there are hopes that Congress will pass a bill that gives the marijuana sector access to banking services, she tells banks that “there’s so much uncertainty in this space that as a federal regulator, I still have to say it’s illegal to bank marijuana.”

“We know we have banks that are banking marijuana businesses, and you know, we can’t bless them and say ‘go ahead and do it.’ But to the extent you’re doing it because it’s legal in your state, follow FinCEN guidance,” she says, referring to guidance issued for financial services that bank marijuana businesses by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) in 2014.

Stakeholders and advocates have been holding out hope that the historic Secure and Fair Enforcement (“SAFE”) Banking Act could still advance in Congress this year Sponsored by Rep. Ed Perlmutter, the bill would protect banks and financial institutions that serviced the marijuana industry from being penalized by federal regulators. The need for cashless transactions has been made even more urgent by the ongoing coronavirus crisis. Not only does having piles of cash around pose a security risk, but it increases the staff’s and customers’ chances of being infected by the virus.

This resulted in the inclusion of language from the SAFE Banking Act into a House-passed coronavirus relief package. It is now waiting for Congressional approval.

Industry watchers believe that sector players like Champignon Brands Inc. (CSE: SHRM) (OTCQB: SHRMF) (FWB: 496) may be wondering about what sort of extreme event will cause the federal government to finally allow banks to serve legal marijuana businesses in nearly all the states in the country.

420 with CNW – Uruguay Sends Another Huge Consignment of Marijuana to Europe

Last month, Uruguay-based Fotmer Life Sciences exported a large shipment of medical cannabis to Portugal. This came about six months after Fortmer shipped one metric ton of high-THC cannabis flower to the same country. The 2019 shipment of high-THC flower was believed to have been the largest ever amount of cannabis flower exported in a single shipment, but weighing in at 3,133 pounds, the May shipment takes the cake.

According to Uruguayan documents dated May 19, 2020, the declared customs value of the latest shipment was about $2 per gram, including costs, insurance and freight. Although no company has publicly taken responsibility for importing the shipments into Europe, it could spur other European importers to follow suit and turn to Portugal for high-THC cannabis. Fortmer Life Sciences has exported roughly 6,613 pounds of cannabis flower since last October, making Uruguay one of the few countries exporting large quantities of the product.

Netherlands is undeniably the one of biggest exporters of cannabis flower in the world, having exported a total of 9700 pounds of cannabis in 2019. However, unlike the shipments from Uruguay, the Dutch exports were processed in a European Union-Good Manufacturing Practice (EU-GMP)-certified facility. According to Fortmer CEO Jordan Lewis, the company produces in facilities certified with Good Agricultural and Collection Practice (“GCAP”) and Uruguayan-GMP certification.

“As has been demonstrated by Fortmer as well as other companies, the pathway for GCAP product as an input into an EU-GMP supply chain is both viable and cost effective,’ he says, adding that the firm has the ‘near-term goal of achieving EU-GMP certification.’ He says that he cannot comment on the identity of the European buyer, but whoever they are, they are effectively paving the way for other medical cannabis companies to export into Europe without first obtaining EU-GMP certification.

It goes without saying that the cannabis has to be grown and harvested under certain quality standards and processed in an EU-GMP facility in Europe, of course. “We are OK with the large public companies competing at the point of sale through branding initiatives while we provide private label and contract cultivation solutions to those myriad competitors,” Lewis says.

It would not be the first time non EU-GMP flower exported from Uruguay is being used to manufacture extracts for medical use in an EU-GMP facility. As Karina Lahnakoski, partner in Rick Advisory at CCI Deloitte in Canada says, “the application of GACP versus EU-GMP, and where in the process GACP transitions to GMP, is a subject that is still debated in industry.”

“A full understanding of the supply chain and the jurisdictional requirements is required to apply the right quality controls.”

Analysts say industry actors like The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) are glad that the cannabis industry has grown to the level where intercontinental trade in the plant matter is now possible as shown by the Uruguayan exports.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Champignon Brands Inc. (CSE: SHRM) (OTCQB: SHRMF) (FWB: 496) Engages Toronto-based Dalriada to Advance NCE IP Portfolio

Champignon Brands (CSE: SHRM) (OTCQB: SHRMF) (FWB: 496), a human optimization sciences company with an emphasis on ketamine and psychedelic medicine, today announced its selection of Toronto-based Dalriada Drug Discovery Inc. (“Dalriada”) to advance its new chemical entity (“NCE”) IP portfolio as it pertains to ketamine and psilocybin/psilicin molecular scaffolds. According to the update, Dalriada, a leading contract research organization (“CRO”) in the drug discovery space, will lead Champignon’s new drug discovery programs in the NCE arena and further provide integrated R&D support to accelerate the Company’s existing preclinical assets and ongoing development of proprietary delivery platforms. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome the Dalriada group to Champignon,” Champignon Special Advisor Dr Joseph Gabriele stated in the news release. “Dalriada’s expertise in medicinal chemistry will be a monumental addition to Champignon’s innovative diverse formulation platforms by their expertise in the synthesis of molecules, including existing psychedelics (ketamine, psilocybin and MDMA), as well as novel new psychedelic-like molecules.
