420 with CNW – Colorado Considers Retaining Marijuana Pick-Up Once Coronavirus Outbreak Ends

Once it became clear that the coronavirus wasn’t just passing by, governments all over deployed measures to help curb its spread. Social distancing and self-isolation were at the top of the list, along with shutting down all but the most essential businesses. In most states with legal marijuana programs, the cannabis industry was also deemed essential.

State governments also relaxed their cannabis laws and allowed online ordering and curbside pickups to further reduce the risk of contact between employees and customers. The response to these measures has been positive, and there have been calls for them to stay in place even after the virus runs its course.

Before the pandemic, Colorado law didn’t allow online ordering and curbside pickups. Now, stakeholders and customers alike can’t have enough of it. Coupled with curbside pickups, it is fast, efficient, and safe.

“I’d like to see the curbside option stay around after this, even with core restrictions in place,” says Hannah Munsterman, general manager of the Clinic’s dispensary in the Highland neighborhood. “That way, we still have limited exposure from people coming in the store.”

With experts saying that the coronavirus pandemic might last two years, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to extend curbside pickups.

Although Governor Jared Polis’ office declined to comment on any possible extensions, the state Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) has stated that it might be possible to extend curbside ordering. The agency is responsible for executing the governor’s orders with respect to the cannabis industry.

According to Shanon Gray, the MED’s communication director, the department couldn’t allow long term ordering from dispensaries unless there is a statutory change or Governor Polis issues another executive order. It is, however, looking into whether curbside ordering can remain without a regulatory update.

“We understand our stakeholders’ interest in maintaining a range of options they can utilize to serve their customers consistent with social distancing guidelines. On that front, we are currently evaluating which provisions we have the ability to implement on a long term basis,” says Gray.

“Absent those changes, licensees should keep in mind the 120-day timeline that applies to the emergency rules.” She says that the MED is using this period to “reflect on what worked well and what didn’t and considering new information gained through these efforts to streamline our operations and in future rulemaking efforts where applicable.”

“This last month required a quick shift to remote work options and heavier reliance on technology, and we anticipate this experience will lead to more conversations about how we can better leverage technology to serve our customers,” she adds.

It would be interesting to hear the views of industry actors like Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) regarding which of the measures introduced during this pandemic can remain after the situation has returned to normal.

420 with CNW – What You Need to Know to Be a Savvy Buyer of Marijuana Edibles

Marijuana edibles have seen a spike in popularity the past few weeks. With the coronavirus tearing through the world, medical experts have warned people against smoking. It attacks the respiratory system, and smoking puts you at greater risk of developing serious symptoms and succumbing to the virus.

However, you still need your daily dose of cannabis, and if you’re a beginner, now is definitely the best time to start. Despite the fact that edibles are a far safer option compared to smoking, they tend to get a bad rap, especially with new users. With the right approach, though, edibles can become your most preferred method for consuming cannabis.

Dosing is where most new beginners fail. The average edible is much stronger than a joint, and you have to take that into account. Many a beginner has had an entire batch of edibles in ignorance and lived to regret it.

For new users, microdosing is a good way to go. A microdose of 1-5mg of THC will take the edge off, leaving you feeling a little high, but still sharp and focused. It’s like swimming, you don’t jump into the deep end on your first day. You have to work towards it.

A medium dose of 5-10 mg of THC will leave you feeling distinctly high, but not too high. Think of it like wading between the shallow and deep ends. You’ve got some swimming experience now, but not enough to be comfortable in the deep end.

Anything above 10mg of THC is a macro dose, and it is reserved for the veterans. If you have extensive experience with marijuana and edibles especially, this is for you.

What should you consider before purchasing an edible? Well, you should always be wary of what you put in your body, and the best way to do that would be to study the ingredients. Anything that seems too wordy or ‘sciencey’ should immediately raise your antenna.

Price too should be a factor. You should be wary if the product seems too affordable. Something may have been compromised or corners may have been cut to reach such a low price. Opt for a quality product and make sure you read online reviews before making any purchases.

Lastly, don’t forget that edibles take longer to kick in. They first have to be digested before the THC is transported to the liver to be metabolized. This can take anything from thirty minutes to an hour or two to kick in.

It depends on how much THC is present, the type of edible, metabolism, sex, weight, and tolerance to cannabis. The only way you’ll know is through experience, and if you’re a beginner, a microdose would be the best start towards understanding how your body responds to cannabis. This may be the reason why cannabis sector players like Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) emphasize that customers read as much as they can about a cannabis product before buying it.

420 with CNW – THC-A: A Superior Neuroprotectant and Anti-Inflammatory Cannabinoid?

The past few years have been instrumental for cannabis. It has seen a slew of positive legislative changes and more states are willing to look at it objectively, especially in regard to its potential medical benefits. Although the science to back this up is scarce, we now know without a doubt that cannabis produces chemicals called cannabinoids, and they are responsible for its therapeutic abilities.

The two most common ones are THC and CBD. THC is the main active component in marijuana and it is responsible for cannabis’s infamous ‘high.’ CBD, on the other hand, carries most of marijuana’s medical potential and has a wide variety of medical applications. However, cannabinoids aren’t limited to just these two.

Cannabis produces over 100 of them and aside from THC and CBD, there are numerous others including THC-a, CBD-a, CBC, and CBG. Cannabinoids like THC-a, or tetrahydrocannabolic acid, especially, hold their own against CBD in some aspects.

CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, but THC-a may be even more potent. It is the inactive form of THC, and it gets converted into the psychoactive chemical when it is heated or burnt. The process also occurs naturally as the plant dries.

Like CBD, there isn’t enough science to definitively say that THC-a is 100% effective against certain conditions. However, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence, and preliminary research has been encouraging.

It is a potent anti-oxidant, and it could hypothetically be used as a neuroprotectant in neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, and similar conditions. Although there haven’t been any human trials yet, the science behind the theory is sound.

THC-a is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, and it has been found to be 10-20 times more potent than CBD. And while cannabidiol can kill affected cells in high doses, THC-a does not.

One risk with cannabidiol is potentially harmful drug interactions. CBD is broken down in the liver by an enzyme that breaks down many common medications and it can interact with these drugs in potentially dangerous ways. THC-a, on the other hand, is broken down by a relatively lonely enzyme and has limited chances of interacting with any other drugs in your system.

THC-a is also more abundant than CBD. Cannabidiol may be insanely popular, but it makes a small percentage of the total cannabinoids produced by cannabis. Since THC-a is the inactive form of THC, there are larger reserves of it. As long it is extracted before it converts into THC, using a cold extraction method like chilled ethanol, you’ll have a lot more THC-a than CBD.

Although THC-a still isn’t as accessible as cannabidiol yet, this may change with time as more research is done. At the moment, experts recommended a 10-40mg dose over the day, for a couple of weeks for the best results.

It is widely expected that sector players like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) may be doing a lot of work behind the scenes to bring THC-a products to consumers in the near future.

420 with CNW – Increased Hand Washing Boosts CBD Market

With the coronavirus tearing through the world, most of us are doing our best to avoid being infected. According to medical professionals, the best way to do this is to practice self-isolation and social distancing coupled with thorough and frequent hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer.

While this has been found to help flatten the curve, the increased hand washing is resulting in dry, itchy, and irritated hands. According to Shari Marcbein, a brand certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine, the excessive hand washing strips the skin of healthy fats and oils known as sebum, and that dehydrates the skin.

Additionally, 10% of the U.S. population, around 38 million Americans, suffer from eczema, according to the National Eczema Association. This is a medical condition that results in itchy, inflamed, and cracked skin, and it makes washing your hands with soap or an alcoholic sanitizer an absolute nightmare.

That’s where CBD comes in. Sanitizing is necessary to beat the virus, so finding ways to soothe your hands afterward is crucial. As Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital says, “It is important to treat these rashes because, in addition to being itchy, inflamed or raw, the skin is at risk of developing an infection.”

Cannabidiol is a natural medicine with a diverse range of medical applications. It is a potent anti-inflammatory which makes it quite effective against eczema. On top of that, it soothes, moisturizes, and nourishes the skin, allowing it to recover from frequent and abrasive hand washing.

“There are receptors in the skin that interact with cannabinoids that could reduce the symptoms and appearance of atopic dermatitis. These effects happen through a constellation of interactions between phytocannabinoids and our endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS),” says the National Eczema Association.

The ECS is a peripheral nervous system that helps regulate processes like mood, memory, pain, appetite, stress, and immune function, all of which determine the internal balance or homeostasis of the body. “CBD interacts with this system and may help the skin re-establish or maintain homeostasis, the result, in this case, being a reduction in symptoms associated with eczema,” says Mary’s Nutritionals’ Chief Scientist, Jeremy Riggle, Ph.D.

Cornbread Hemp, a Kentucky based CBD company has seen great success with its CBD skin lotion, especially once the virus broke out. The full spectrum CBD lotion works great against chapped and dry hands, and more people are using it to help moisturize and nourish their hands.

With experts saying that the virus might stick around for almost two years, we may see increased CBD lotion sales as people try to keep their hands clean and healthy.

Analysts believe that the cannabis industry, including Round Meadow Holdings Corp. and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF), is pleased that there is a silver lining to this pandemic that has adversely affected the sector and other industries.

420 with CNW – How to Read Marijuana Product Labels

Despite its immense popularity, the cannabis industry is still new and relatively unregulated. While federal law classifies cannabis as a controlled substance, over 30 states have legalized cannabis in various capacities. This patchwork legislation makes it difficult for agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to fully regulate the industry.

There are always bad players in such situations. In marijuana’s case, it is companies making unsubstantiated medical claims on their products or delivering contaminated products. That’s why it is crucial you check product labels before making any purchases.

Companies are legally required to send their product to a third-party laboratory for testing, and the results should be made available to consumers. This is proof that the product is safe to use, contains what it says on its labeling and in the correct amounts.

Depending on region-specific labeling laws, producers may publish results on the label or they may provide detailed lab results (a Certificate of Analysis) via a batch number or a QR code.  Third-party lab results will typically detail;

Cannabinoids. This is a group of chemicals produced by cannabis, and they are responsible for its physiological and psychological effects. The most abundant ones are THC, which is responsible for marijuana’s infamous high and CBD (cannabidiol), which is said to be medically beneficial.

Minor cannabinoids that may be present include THCa, THCv, CBDa, CBN, CBC, and CBG. Third-party results will show how much of each cannabinoid is present in the product.

Terpenes are also produced by cannabis, and they are responsible for its distinctive flavor and aroma. They work together with THC, CBD, and the other cannabinoids to create unique effects and benefits in what has been dubbed the ‘entourage effect’.

Some products are completely devoid of terpenes while others contain them. Some of the terpenes you may see on lab results include myrcene, limonene, and terpinolene.

Moisture content will also determine how safe the product is. If cannabis bud, for instance, has a high moisture level (over 15%) there is an increased risk of bacteria and fungi. However, if it is too low (less than 5%) the bud will be brittle and dry, taking away from the experience. Labs also test for microbial growth for things like salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mold in samples with higher moisture content.

Solvents are used in extraction processes, and they can remain in low levels in the product. Different regions have different acceptable levels for various solvents but once they are past a certain level, they can have serious health implications. Labs usually test for propane, butane, benzene, and xylenes.

Heavy Metals may also be present as cannabis absorbs and stores them from fertilizers or contaminated soil. Third parties labs usually flag cadmium, arsenic mercury, and lead as well as several others in the Certificate of Analysis (COA).

A COA is an invaluable resource if you are considering purchasing a marijuana product. Producers that make their lab results easily accessible prove they have nothing to hide, and they are more likely to have safe high-quality products.

Experts say it is no wonder that leading cannabis companies like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) actively encourage their customers to read the product labels carefully before buying any product.
