CannabisNewsBreaks – MCTC Holdings, Inc. (MCTC) Launches Project Varin to Develop New Delivery Systems for THC-V

MCTC Holdings (OTC: MCTC), a cannabinoid science forward company developing unique infusion technologies and cannabinoid delivery systems, today announced Project Varin, a program to develop new delivery systems for Tetrahydrocannabivarin (“THC-V”). According to the update, THC-V is becoming known within the cannabinoid sciences arena as the “Skinny Cannabinoid” due to its purported appetite suppression qualities and potential use as a treatment against obesity-associated glucose intolerance. “THC-V is so rare and difficult to obtain, it is currently valued at around $500,000 per kilogram, which is approximately ten times the price of gold. In order for the marketplace to utilize this potentially beneficial exotic cannabinoid, new delivery systems will need to be developed to allow the amount of THC-V administered to be efficiently utilized by the human body,” MCTC Holdings CEO Arman Tabatabaei said in the news release. “This issue of bioavailability has been a significant ongoing concern for the industry relative to many cannabinoids, but with the rarity of THC-V, the need for efficient delivery is hugely amplified. It is our goal to solve this pressing industry issue. Based on our already completed laboratory accomplishments and our patent-pending technologies, we believe this goal is within our reach.”

420 with CNW – Why Weed Makes You Hungry

People tend to eat more after using marijuana because several separate mechanisms come together to invoke marijuana-induced appetite.

One of the mechanisms appeals to our taste buds as it makes everything yummy, while another mechanism makes us crave candy and junk food, and when the two mechanisms are bound together, they make us hungry even when full.

Talking about how marijuana induces hunger is a bit complex; therefore, to make sure that everyone understands, let us break it down into several sections that are easy to understand.

The Olfactory Bulb

This is a part of the brain that is involved in olfaction, which is a process that establishes our sense of smell.

A study conducted on animals in 2014 revealed that after consuming weed, the THC molecules bind themselves to the cellular receptors of the olfactory bulb, which enhances an individual’s sense of smell. This in turn intensifies fragrances and aromas.

Your sense of smell is closely linked with your sense of taste, providing you with a pleasurable eating experience, since food is made much yummier. Consequently, you are more likely to get the munchies once you consume weed and this part of your brain is activated.

Dopamine and Lowered Inhibitions

THC increases the levels of dopamine and lowers our inhibitions, causing some of the unhealthy food choices amongst weed consumers. This forces you to eat food you would not be otherwise caught eating, and regret hits later after the high has worn off.

The Ghrelin Hormone

In 2018, Washington State University researchers conducted a study in which they exposed rats to marijuana vapor and then observed their eating habits. The study findings showed that THC triggered a surge of the ghrelin hormone, which is responsible for signaling the brain that an organism is hungry; thus, influencing it to look for food despite it being full. This study shows what humans experience when they are high on weed and develop the urge to eat.

POMC Neurons

In 2015, researchers conducted a study on marijuana and hunger, where they found that under the influence of marijuana, POMC neuron cells in the hypothalamus alter their function.

The hypothalamus is a brain segment that links the nervous system with the endocrine system. It is responsible for hunger, thirst, circadian rhythm, sleep, and body temperature. The researchers found that under the influence of marijuana, the POMC neurons, which are responsible for sensing when one is full, shift their functions and instead detects starvation. This sends you looking for what to eat.

When one is full, POMC neurons secrete the alpha-MSH compound, which is responsible for satiety sensation, but under the influence of weed, the neurons secrete a beta-endorphin compound, which is responsible for stimulating appetite irrespective of one being full.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)

There are marijuana strains that contain high levels of THCV, which diminishes appetite. Therefore, consumers should strive to acquire products that are rich in THCV to counter the effects of THC-induced hunger-pangs.

Therapeutic Significance

For the majority of recreational weed consumers, marijuana-induced hunger is a nuisance, but for people undergoing chemotherapy, marijuana-induced hunger is much welcome because their treatment reduces their desire and ability to eat. The muchies aren’t therefore n entirely bad thing, depending on your needs.

This could perhaps be the reason why weed companies, such as ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), always recommend that people talk to their doctor before consuming any cannabis product.

420 with CNW – Study Provides Insights into People Traveling Across State Lines to Buy Weed

American Marijuana, the company that caused a stir when it advertised a job for someone to paid to smoke weed, conducted a survey exploring people’s travel experiences in search of adult-use cannabis. They asked more than 1,000 people who had traveled to other states to buy legal recreational marijuana about their destination and what they purchased.

There was a lot of interesting feedback on the survey. The survey revealed that 36.5% of the people traveled by plane, while 57.3% traveled via automobile to buy legal marijuana in other states. It is surprising to see that quite a significant number of people went via air despite the heightened security at airports and federal law restricting the movement of weed across state lines.

Most of the states visited by the consumers did not come as a shock because they are some of the states where consumers enjoy low marijuana prices. These states include Colorado, California, Massachusetts, Washington, and Nevada. Oregon did not make it into the top list despite having low prices on marijuana products. Massachusetts is the only state in the east to make it into the list; thus, the level of traffic is most probably going to increase from other states in the coming months and years.

Fifty-two percent of the respondents said that they traveled to Colorado to buy legal weed, while thirty-three percent traveled to California. Since recreational marijuana has been legal in Colorado longer than other states, the state has a competitive edge over other states because its recreational marijuana market has matured, thus low prices overall.

Another surprising finding is that about thirty percent of the respondents who went to other states to buy legal have access to legal adult-use weed within their states. This shows that there are things that are yet to be fulfilled in many of the existing recreational states.

When people were asked what products they buy most, edibles were on top of the list. And some consumers prefer to purchase and evade the long process of making your edibles.

Flower was the second, followed by pre-rolled joints and CBD oils on the list of products bought by the respondents.

While analyzing the survey, it was noticed that a lot of the consumers spent a significant amount of money buying legal weed in other states. If the consumers had legal marijuana shops nearby, time would have been saved and allocated to more appropriate tasks.

Industry analysts believe that the findings of this survey will give marijuana-related companies, such as HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) and MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC), plenty to think about regarding how best to serve their target customers.

420 with CNW – Why the Thai Military Regards Medical Marijuana as Top Priority

The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand launched the first full-time medical marijuana clinic in Bangkok earlier this month. The launch was led by the conservative, military-dominated government, whose main aim is to make Thailand the regional producer and distributor of medical marijuana.

Marijuana extracts are approved for treating a wide range of diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’s, anxiety, cancer, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.

More clinics will be opened in greater Bangkok as promised by the government, and through a specialized smartphone app, patients would be able to book appointments.

Dr. Ganja, a mascot, is campaigning for the government to promote medical marijuana. Dr. Ganja is an approachable and level –headed scientist. Another supporter of legal marijuana is the Thailand Prime Minister who is also a former military general, Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Discussed below is where the push for developing the legal marijuana industry in Thailand started and whether it could be the gateway for further drug use liberalization in South East Asia.

When the Push Towards Medical Marijuana Started in Thailand

Marijuana was outlawed in Thailand in 1935, and before that ban, it had always been a part of traditional medicine and a cooking ingredient. It had also been used as a form of pain relief.

The legalization of medical marijuana in Thailand took place in December 2018, making Thailand the first country in South East Asia to legalize marijuana. It was legalized through an amendment of the 1979 Narcotic Act, thereby approving the use of marijuana for medicinal and research purposes.

The Ministry of Health in Thailand has a website containing information about marijuana cultivation, medical research, and the status of marijuana in Thailand, and the public can browse through the website to educate themselves.

The cultivation of medical marijuana can now be done by government agencies, institutions of higher education, agricultural producers, entrepreneurs, and medical professionals.

The first medical marijuana research institution was launched in 2019 by Rangit University in Bangkok. Harsh penalties are still being imposed on those found possessing and trafficking marijuana.

Why Thailand Decided to Promote Medical Marijuana

The military-dominated government recognized the vast business opportunity and tax revenue to ensue from the legalization of medical marijuana, and this could have been a strong motivator for legalizing the industry.

Besides, having watched how the marijuana market in North America has grown, increased revenues, and created thousands of jobs, the Thai government had to venture into the medical marijuana industry.

Prohibition Partners is a marijuana market research firm, and it estimated that by 2024, the Asian medical marijuana market could be worth $8.4 billion. The managing director of Prohibition Partners, Daragh Anglim, said that a well regulated medical marijuana market across Asia could help transform patients’ health, farmers, and the economy. The firm further estimated that Thailand’s legal marijuana market could be worth about $958 million by 2024.

Being one of the largest medical tourism destinations across the globe, Thailand officials would like to provide medical tour packages such as detox, massages and other wellness services using medical marijuana products, said the tourism minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakan.

Could it Be the Gateway to the Broader Legalization of Marijuana?

A recent poll shows that 80% of Thai citizens are in favor of full legalization of marijuana, reported the Bangkok Post. This indicates that Thailand could be on the path of legalizing adult-use marijuana, but the military is still opposed to adult-use recreational marijuana.

Nevertheless, the steps that they have taken to avail medical marijuana to the patients who need it the most may have won applause from industry players like Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) and Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) who would like patients from all parts of the world to have the option of using medical marijuana to manage their conditions.

420 with CNW – Marijuana Amnesty Boxes Installed at Chicago Airports

Marijuana amnesty boxes have been installed in two airports within the city of Chicago. The two airports are O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport. The amnesty bins are for passengers to dispose of their adult-use marijuana before boarding a plane.

The airports had the marijuana amnesty boxes fitted at the end of December so that they would be there on January 1 this year when recreational marijuana sales become legal in Chicago. The boxes are located near the TSA checkpoints.

However, the TSA and the state police focus is not on individuals carrying marijuana because it is legal to possess marijuana while you are at the airport but illegal to fly with any substance. This is because marijuana is still federally illegal, and the federal government regulates all U.S. airspace.

Speaking to Fox News, a spokesperson for TSA said that although the TSA does not search the passengers for marijuana products such as edibles, under federal law, they are required to report any discovery of drugs or any other illegal substances. The local police are then left to determine further action after locating people carrying weed.

Chicago Tribune reported that the Department of Aviation in Chicago and the police were tasked with overseeing the marijuana amnesty boxes. The cops would empty the amnesty bins regularly, file a report on the contents of the box, and then dispose of all the materials that were dropped in the amnesty boxes by the passengers.

The trend of installing marijuana amnesty boxes at airports is gaining popularity because Chicago is not the first airport to have them fitted. Marijuana amnesty boxes were also previously provided in McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and Colorado Springs Airport in Colorado for passengers to dispose of their marijuana before boarding flights.

In Las Vegas, the boxes are located at all the high traffic areas outside of the airport and within the airport car rental area. The Department of Aviation installed the amnesty bins after Clark County established a marijuana possession and advertising ban at the airport in September of 2019, reported The Las Vegas Sun.

Speaking to The Associated Press, McCarran spokeswoman, Christine Crews, said that the amnesty boxes were fitted outside the airport to help people comply with the ban issued by Clark County. She also said that the boxes would be monitored to prevent any tampering. She further said the content of the boxes would be disposed of multiple times a week by a hired contractor.

She added that any individual who does not comply with the rules and is found carrying weed at the airport would be dealt with by the Las Vegas Metro Police.

Placing the “marijuana amnesty bins” at airports is a good move that allows any passenger who still had weed on them to get rid of it safely before boarding a flight, and experts believe that weed companies like VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) may be hoping that the airport authorities will go a step further and use the public address system to remind travelers to use the amnesty bins.
