420 with CNW – Massachusetts Patients Turn to Maine for Affordable Medical Marijuana

Fifty year old Ingrid Martinez is terminally ill and undergoing chemotherapy. Martinez uses medical marijuana to manage pain and nausea. She resides in Lowell, and before she got sick, she was working in medical coding. Martinez travels to Maine after every three weeks to buy marijuana rather than get her supplies from Massachusetts where she resides.

She has a Massachusetts medical marijuana card, but she said that the MMJ is expensive in the Bay State. Martinez stopped using marijuana at some point because she could not afford it, and that is why she travels to Maine because it is cheaper than in Massachusetts.

Although it is illegal to transport marijuana across state lines, patients from Massachusetts are driving to Maine to purchase medical marijuana because it is affordable. Late August, Maine started accepting Massachusetts medical marijuana cards, and since then, marijuana outlets bordering the states have encountered a large number of customers from the Bay State.

The marijuana outlets in Maine started receiving more customers after the officials in Massachusetts banned the sale of vaping products except those used to vape crushed marijuana buds.

The owner of Your Green Thumb Caregivers in Kittery, Pam Edwards, whose shop is less than 30 minutes’ drive from northeastern Massachusetts, said that about 30% of her business comes from Bay State residents.

Edward further said that most of her customers told her that Maine has a wide range of products with better prices. She also noted that customers from Massachusetts rub their eyes when they see the costs of the merchandise because they cannot believe they are that cheap.

Recently, the online menu for Your Green Thumb Caregivers’ price for 1/8 ounce of marijuana was ranging between $20 and $50 while the rate for the same quantity at Patriot Care in Lowell was $50. Your Green Thumb Caregivers had 35-plus flower options while Alternative Therapies in Salem had 12 options.

The Price of Weed is a website that compares marijuana prices in different states. On Friday, it showed that medium quality marijuana in Massachusetts was going for $282 per ounce while in Maine, it was $232 an ounce.

A medical marijuana patient and advocate, Mike Crawford, said that he drives to Your Green Thumb Caregivers from North Shore every week to buy legal weed at an affordable price. He noted that the first time he bought the pot, he felt like it’s Christmas.

Crawford also noted that Maine stores have more price options depending on the quality of the weed. Compared to Massachusetts, the prices and products are better in Maine.

The law governing the marijuana market in Massachusetts is stringent as it requires the medical marijuana companies to grow their marijuana products, and this controls all aspects of sales. While in Maine, there are eight licensed dispensaries, which are large businesses. The state also has caregivers and small-scale independent farmers who are allowed to open retail stores and sell marijuana.

Another reason why marijuana is cheaper in Maine is that the cost of a license application is also low. The license fee for a farmer who is looking to grow 30 mature and 60 immature marijuana plants is $1,200 in Maine, while in Massachusetts, it is $30,000 plus an application fee of $1,500.

Massachusetts also has strict testing and packaging requirements, which are non-existent in Maine.

However, there are risks involved since in Massachusetts the products have labels detailing the ingredients while in Maine, you are taking a chance with each product you buy.

Experts suggest that marijuana companies like Sproutly Canada Inc. (CSE: SPR) (OTCQB: SRUTF) (FRA: 38G) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) may need to prevail on their counterparts to form associations that set uniform standards that all products must adhere to in order to give consumers the best that the industry has to offer.

420 with CNW – Why You Should Be Cautious About Telling Police You Use Weed

The law enforcement agencies are still arresting people for using or possessing marijuana despite its legal stature in many jurisdictions around the country, and some of these arrests are brought about by personal admission of use or possession to the police.

People are under the impression that it is okay to admit that they are using marijuana since it is legal in many states in the U.S. Others assume that since marijuana is legalized, the rules associated with the plant are not applicable, so they end up throwing caution to the wind as you find them leaving their homes with marijuana. Most often, this leads to trouble, especially if the police are involved.

Although marijuana is not totally prohibited in the U.S., the police forces are still finding excuses to arrest people on marijuana-related cases, and most often, the arrests are due to personal admission.

Earlier this week, Detroit News reported that hours after the launch of recreational marijuana sales, a motorist crashed with a Michigan police vehicle. Although the cause of the accident was the poor nature of the road, after been questioned severally about the accident, the motorist said that he had smoked pot during the day. Speaking to the news outlet, the State Police Lieutenant, Sarah Krebs, noted that the motorist admitted to smoking weed before that accident, and this shows that the driver was driving under the influence. The evidence was sufficient to have him sent to jail, according to the police.

The accident happened along interstate 75. The driver was too fast despite the poor road infrastructure, which caused him to spin and crash into a police vehicle. If an accident takes place even if there are no people who are injured, the police must investigate to determine if the drivers were impaired. If a motorist is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, the police make use of a breathalyzer to either verify or eliminate the suspicion.

However, law enforcement officers in states where marijuana is legal are determined to pin accidents on stoned driving. Recreational marijuana sales becomes legal in Illinois in January, and the police force in the state is on a rampage to arrest stoned drivers before legal sales begin. The only downside is that the absence of roadside test tools, such as breathalyzers, used for detecting impaired drivers makes it harder to prove impairment.

The suspects are instead subjected to a blood test for confirmation, and for this to happen, you would have to be reeking of weed, with bloodshot eyes and irrational behavior before the cops pull you aside.

A driver should never admit to smoking marijuana because if you do, you will be subjected to a blood test, and if it is positive, you will be charged with impaired driving. You will then be placed in the county jail until you are bailed out. Admission of guilt will make arguing your case before a judge challenging, and you will probably be convicted of a DUI. You will also lose your driver’s license.

According to a defense attorney in California, Robert Shatzco, people should never admit to smoking weed since it is difficult for the police to determine if you are impaired. He also said that they are helping clients get their cases dismissed or get them a reduced charge.

Experts think that such potential legal traps may explain why many marijuana companies, such as MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), invest heavily in educating people about using cannabis responsibly.

HempNewsBreaks – Hemptown USA Unveils New CBG-Based Product Line at MJBizCon 2019; Reports 2019 Harvest Results

Hemptown USA, a privately-owned grower of full-spectrum, feminized hemp using premium-seed genetics, on Tuesday announced that the company revealed a portion of its new line of cannabigerol (“CBG”) products at the 2019 MJBizCon in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hemptown USA will be at booth C3831 at the 2019 MJBizCon Conference taking place Dec. 11-13, 2019. The new suite of products includes the Hemptown CBG Tincture, the Hemptown Salve Balm, and an assortment of capsules intended for various uses. The company is also promoting its new Hemptown Chew gum, which contains the highest levels of hemp-derived CBD and CBG cannabinoids currently accessible on the market. In addition, the company also reported a successful 2019 harvest. Among other highlights, the company reportedly achieved its objectives for the year; expanded the 50-acre cultivation operation in Oregon in 2018 to roughly 500 acres; and had a total of more than 1,500 acres in three states where planting, harvesting and drying of over 2 million pounds of CBG and CBD industrial hemp were successfully completed. “Our new line of CBG-infused products further advances Hemptown’s leadership position in the hemp industry. Hemptown is cultivating and harvesting over 500 acres of genetics that produce plants rich in CBG, which represents about 40% of the entire 2019 U.S. CBG crop, in our estimation. This is just the beginning, and we look forward to being the gold standard in CBG-based products and rolling out even more products in 2020 as part of our Kirkman acquisition,” Hemptown USA president and co-founder Michael Townsend stated in the news release. “Additionally, we third-party test each batch of our products and post results on the Hemptown website so consumers can be assured that the products they purchase deliver exactly what is claimed.”

In total, the company cultivated more than 1,500 acres in three states – Oregon, Colorado and Kentucky.
