420 with CNW — Research Finds Cannabis Users Have Lower Blood Pressure

Over the past decade or so, a growing body of research has revealed that cannabis has significant therapeutic potential. Studies have found that cannabis can be effective against a host of medical conditions, including chronic pain, insomnia and anxiety, with none of the side effects typically observed with pharmaceutical use.

Even as dozens of American states and overseas territories now allow their residents to purchase and use cannabis for medical purposes, researchers across the world are still trying to understand the plant’s full therapeutic potential. A recent study published in “NatureScientific Reports” journal has provided evidence linking cannabis usage to lower blood pressure.

For their study, investigators conducted an analysis of data gathered from more than 91,000 subjects to assess the relationship between blood pressure and marijuana consumption. They found that current and lifetime users of the plant tend to have lower blood pressure levels and that the effect was more pronounced in women compared to men.

Alexandre Vallée, the study’s lead researcher, highlighted that past studies on the relationship between blood pressure and cannabis use relied on a limited population pool and rarely looked at how cannabis consumption affected the blood pressure of different genders. This time, Vallée and her team sourced data from the UK Biobank, where a whopping 156,959 volunteers provided information on their cannabis use and blood pressure.

The researchers excluded 65,798 individuals who had past cardiovascular events and currently used antidepressants and antihypertensive drugs. They then the measured diastolic and systolic blood pressures of the remaining participants two times and asked them to report their lifetime cannabis use habits via a questionnaire.

Those who admitted to using cannabis a long time ago were still classified as marijuana users while participants who had never used the drugs were used as study controls. The cannabis users were then separated into other groups, based on their level of cannabis use and also whether they were former or current users.

According to the study, heavy lifetime cannabis use was linked to a reduction on both diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure in both genders. Furthermore, the decrease in blood pressure was more pronounced in women compared to men. The researchers also observed that current cannabis users of both genders also exhibited lower blood pressure levels.

However, they noted that while other studies had also shown a stronger relationship between cannabis use and systolic pressure compared to cannabis use and diastolic pressure, they still weren’t completely certain of the relationship between cannabis and blood pressure. In their report, the investigators added that cannabinoid content could play a role in affecting blood pressure, with some previous studies showing that both CBD and THC both induce vasorelaxation and lower blood pressure.

This therapeutic potential of marijuana is making it possible for entities such as India Globalization Capital Inc. (NYSE American: IGC) to focus on developing THC-based formulations for conditions such as chronic pain, which take a toll on millions of Americans each year.

420 with CNW — Connecticut Lawmakers Consider Adding Marijuana DUI to Driving Curriculum

According to a recent bill discussed by the House’s Transportation Committee, Connecticut driver education courses would include information warning against the risks of driving while under the influence of marijuana. House Majority Leader Jason Rojas put forth the bill last month, and it had a public hearing last week. The proposed legislation would mandate that lessons on the risks of driving under the influence be included in private driver instruction courses as well as those provided at high schools and secondary schools.

The current law mandates that instruction on driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol be included in driver education, but it makes no explicit mention of cannabis. Proponents argue that it ought to be given recent state law revisions and widespread misconceptions about driving under the influence.

The bill comes after the state’s 2021 marijuana legalization law took effect and one month after commercial marijuana retailers began operating in Connecticut.

In his statement, Rojas stressed the need to take precautions to prevent minors from developing false beliefs about the effects of cannabis on their ability to drive. That misconception was further emphasized during the hearing by East Lyme Republican Rep. Holly Cheeseman, who has put forth similar legislation. According to Cheeseman, a lot of drivers don’t realize how using cannabis can affect their behavior behind the wheel.

There is a misconception that driving while high is safe, according to Cheeseman. “Oh, I’m a better driver because I drive more cautiously or slowly,” she said. “No. Let’s face it, if you’re driving 20 mph on Interstate 95, you’re just as dangerous as if you’re driving 80 mph because it impairs your depth perception and lane-change skills.”

Dr. Kevin Borrup, executive director of the Center for Injury Prevention at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, claimed that cannabis use could slow or impair critical driving abilities like reaction times and coordination. Since marijuana is now legal for adult recreational use in Connecticut, Borrup argued that it is crucial for the state’s teen driver education program to cover the risks of driving under the influence of marijuana. “We are aware that young people in Connecticut and across the nation underestimate the dangers of operating a motor vehicle after consuming marijuana,” he said.

Christine Cohen, cochair of the Transportation Committee and a Guilford Democrat, stated that there has been an “alarming” rise in incidents of drunk driving. Cohen added that she believes that it is incumbent upon the committee — on the legislature — to address that.

As this industry grows in Connecticut, the stiff competition is likely to create a demand for alternative sources of funding, such as the products offered by REZYFi Inc., in order to enable enterprises to grow their product list and address the ever-increasing demands of consumers.

Prime Harvest Inc. Reveals That Their Reg A+ Equity Offering Has Been Granted Approval to Go Ahead

  • Prime Harvest recently revealed that the company’s Reg A+ equity offering has been greenlighted by the SEC
  • The primary share offering will see the company market up to 10 million shares to investors at a price of $4.20 each, with estimated gross proceeds of $42 million
  • The company has said that net proceeds will be destined towards the acquisition of licensed assets, continued expansion of their delivery network and general corporate purposes

Prime Harvest, a technology-focused, full-service cannabis company based in San Diego, recently announced the qualification of its equity offering under the SEC’s Regulation A+. The offering, which has officially been qualified by the U.S. Security Exchange Commission (“SEC”) as of Jan. 25, 2023, will provide the company with authorization to commence marketing its upcoming equity placement to both, accredited and non-accredited investors via its online platform, www.Weed4ThePeople.com (https://cnw.fm/KcuMh).

Prime Harvest plans to raise gross proceeds of up to $42 million through its primary share issuance, a corporate action which will see the company offer up to 10,000,000 shares of common stock for sale at an initial public offer price of $4.20 per share. The company has announced that gross proceeds from the equity raising will be destined towards the acquisition of licensed assets, the development of Prime Harvest’s direct-to-consumer application, expansion of the company’s state-wide delivery capabilities, as well as general corporate purposes.

Dating back to the company’s change in corporate strategy in 2019, a move which saw Prime Harvest transition from its origins as one of San Diego County’s founding brick and mortar cannabis outlets towards a tech-focused retailer through its Jaxx Cannabis flagship retail and delivery platform, the company has seen its prospects rise to new highs. Boasting over 60+ brand partners, Prime Harvest has seen its revenues swell by upwards of 784% between 2019-2021, a function of the company seeing its unique customer numbers rise by over 212% during that interim, with the average consumer expending $75 on average per purchase.

More recently, Prime Harvest and its retail brand, Jaxx Cannabis, have taken the sale of cannabis to new technological heights through the creation and development of the Jaxx Delivery Mobile App. A reliable, sophisticated and easy to use platform, the Jaxx Delivery App aims to expand the company’s footprint to encompass much of California’s legal market – a bold and arduous move given the rising demand from previously unexploited submarkets within the Golden State.

Prime Harvest’s actions come at a pivotal time for the US cannabis market, with over 33 US states as well as the District of Columbia currently sanctioning the legal use of some form of cannabis. Consequently, the legal cannabis industry has rapidly become one of the fastest growing sectors of the US economy, with a recent study noting that the industry accounted for 250,000 jobs as of 2020 and would likely grow to a market size of $24.1 billion by 2025 (from $6.6 billion in 2016). One study in the meantime has opined that California alone could account for a remarkable $25 billion of a projected $50 billion nationwide market by 2026.

Despite predictions on market growth being wildly divergent on the back of varying levels of optimism surrounding the industry’s development prospects, Prime Harvest has sought to pre-emptively ensure that they will be able to capitalize on the sector’s ongoing evolution through its upcoming capital raising exercise as well as its market leading retail offer via Jaxx Cannabis.

420 with CNW — Association Launched to Teach Australian Nurses About Medical Marijuana

Last week saw the launch of the Australian Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA), a newly formed organization to provide nurses with peer support, education and advocacy regarding medicinal marijuana. Simone O’Brien, a nurse practitioner and licensed medical marijuana practitioner, founded the group alongside Jodie Davis and Deb Ranson. The organization desires that nursing programs at the undergraduate level cover the endocannabinoid system.

O’Brien developed an interest in medicinal marijuana after suffering a severe leg injury during a leave from work, which pushed her to research the potential benefits of the medication.

Australia legalized medical marijuana seven years ago through the Federal Parliament. However, a majority of the medications are considered unapproved therapies, and healthcare providers must obtain approval through the Commonwealth Therapeutic Goods Administration before issuing a prescription.

According to O’Brien, the new group will provide training on medicinal cannabis for nurses at all levels. Additionally, the ACMA will promote improved patient access and provide peer support for nurses. She stated that many patients visit their doctors, psychiatrists or psychologists and are told that cannabis won’t work for them; thus, the purpose of the organization is to let people know that cannabis medication is safe and suitable for a wide range of patient populations.

Prescriptions for the substance have increased dramatically since 2016, going from a small number to well over 100,000 in 2022. The ACMA is advising caution when using cannabinoids for therapeutic purposes, claiming that they are still in their experimental stages despite the growing number of studies. Additionally, the group emphasizes the need for additional high-quality studies since the available evidence is scant and inconclusive regarding the safety and efficacy of medicinal marijuana products.

Lucy Haslam, cofounder of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association (AMCA), called the creation of the ACNA “exciting,” stating that patients often face discrimination due to a lack of knowledge about medicinal cannabis. Haslam first began her advocacy for the legalization of medicinal cannabis in 2014 with the help of her son Dan, who became dependent on the drug after being told that he had terminal bowel cancer. February marked eight years since Dan passed away and seven years since Australia legalized medical marijuana.

The ACNA will officially launch during the first AMCA-sponsored medicinal marijuana awareness week. Currently, the Federal Parliament does not formally recognize the AMCA, but Haslam hopes this recognition will happen in the near future.

It is well that associations such as ACNA are being formed to teach nurses about medical marijuana, because with the rate at which various companies such as India Globalization Capital Inc. (NYSE American: IGC) are working to develop cannabis-based therapeutics, it won’t be long before the medical community has to look at these products as an addition to or even alternative to conventional medicines.

420 with CNW — Study Finds Marijuana Vaping Among Youth Is Higher in Medical-Use States

New research has found that seniors in high school within states where the medical use of marijuana is allowed had a higher likelihood of vaping marijuana, in comparison to seniors within states where the drug’s use is legal for recreational use or is prohibited.

Washington State University PhD student Christian Maynard and Professor Jennifer Schwartz of the sociology department at the institution carried out the study.

For their research, the investigators conducted an analysis obtained from the Monitoring the Future survey, which was comprised of responses on marijuana consumption from more than 3,700 seniors in high school. Of those students participating in the survey, 592 of them expressed their views on the perceived hazards linked to vaping while 620 reported on marijuana vapes accessibility.

Overall, the researchers found that seniors in states that permitted the recreational use of cannabis were more than two times as likely to have ever vaporized marijuana in the last year, compared to those in states that prohibited adult-use marijuana. A reported 56.4% and 62.2% of seniors in medicinal-use as well as adult-use jurisdictions/states also reported ease of access to vaping equipment such as cartridges.

In their report, the researchers stated that seniors who could easily access marijuana cartridges were at least thrice as likely to ever have vaped marijuana in the last year. They also found that the perceived risk linked to marijuana use was 40% for seniors in states that prohibited marijuana use, 35.5% for those that permitted adult-use marijuana and 31.3% for those in medical-use states.

In a press release, Maynard stated that the researchers expected results from adult-use and medical states to be similar but were surprised to observe no statistical difference between adult-use and prohibited states. The researchers wrote in Drug and Alcohol Dependence Reports that there was a growing prevalence of vaping among adolescents. In their report, they referenced data from Monitoring the Future survey, which demonstrated a 12% increase in lifetime prevalence of marijuana vaping for 12th graders in the 2017–2019 period.

The researchers also highlighted that additional research was required on whether legal context was linked to an increase in marijuana vaping by adolescents. They then added that research had not evaluated how factors such as acceptability of regular use of marijuana and perceived availability of marijuana vaping products diminished the effects of legal context on marijuana vaping.

Schwartz and Maynard also wrote that future studies needed to use the longitudinal Monitoring the Future survey to better evaluate causality of legal contexts on the consumption of marijuana and techniques by adolescents.

This study suggests that it is easier to keep youth away from some marijuana products if there is a legal market for the substance in a given state. This would add onto the many benefits proponents of legalization enumerate, besides creating downstream opportunities for other lines of business such as the niche products of enterprises such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX).

REZYFi, Inc. Delivers on Promise of Expertise, Focusing on Loan Origination and Support for Cannabis, High-risk Clients

  • Specialized mortgage lender REZYFi Inc. is strategically serving the needs of consumers and cannabis-related businesses through an alternative loan financing approach
  • The company’s alternative mortgage financing strategy relies on real estate and other assets of the borrowers to secure loans for clients whose financial history or legal revenue base may make them unattractive borrowers for traditional banks
  • The cannabis industry has long struggled to secure loans despite its cash-intensive operations because of the federal government’s choice not to recognize the industry
  • REZYFi’s strengths as a lender include efficient operations supported by skilled staffing with years of expertise in the industry, , and a supportive network of independent brokers and loan officers

The emergence of the alternative mortgage loan financing market in recent years has made it simpler and easier for consumers to get a mortgage, even with what might be regarded as a past history of poor loan risk decisions. Nevertheless, special challenges remain for cannabis operators.

Florida-based REZYFi is a mortgage loan originator that specializes in market sectors such as cannabis-related operations and alternative loans related to the residential marketplace. The company addresses the needs of both traditional and non-traditional loans consumers and businesses, drawing on the strengths it has cultivated through skilled staffing, the organization of a supportive network of independent brokers and loan officers, (https://cnw.fm/zUQQX).

REZYFi’s operational model specifically sustains cannabis operators where licensed businesses are legally qualified by their state governments, but which are struggling to do business because national drug laws regulated by the federal government create barriers. Banks insured by the federal government have been less likely to take loan risks with client operations not recognized by the federal government, so REZYFi fills a critical marketplace need.

Cannabis operations have seen market booms during the past decade based largely on their state-legal status and their attempts to provide healthful and accessible alternatives to the prescription drug industry. California is one of the leading cannabis-legal states, and one of the largest economies in the world.

REZYFi provides senior loan and project financings to state-legal cannabis businesses and to residential projects that may be related to cannabis businesses. The loans are secured by real estate and other assets of the borrowers “to the extent permitted by applicable laws and regulations governing such borrowers,” according to REZYFi’s website.

420 with CNW — Canadian Industry Groups Want Federal Fees on Marijuana Reduced to Relieve Operator Burden

A group of Canadian cannabis executives has shined a light on what it says are unsustainable federal fees on the nascent industry. The executives are asking the federal government to offer the industry some relief from the federal tax fees amid widespread financial losses and increasing job losses. During a news conference last week, the executives argued that job losses would continue to pile up if the federal government did not make any meaningful reform.

Even though cannabis is legal across dozens of states in the United States and in Canada as well, industry players have been forced to contend with relatively high fees and taxes since the inception of the industry. While cannabis companies have tried to recoup these costs by passing them on to the consumers, this has made legal cannabis several times more expensive than black-market cannabis and helped to bolster the illicit market. The situation has been especially dire in Canada, where cannabis producers have already announced close to 1,000 job losses thus far in the year.

Cannabis Council of Canada CEO George Smitherman stated that the federal government’s fees and taxes had made the cannabis industry unsustainable. He explains that the taxes and fees levied on the marijuana sector made it impossible for the industry to remain sustainable and progress in the long-term. Smitherman said that he would like the government to reduce the 2.3% standard cultivation license fee that is charged on annual gross revenue.

Speaking at the news conference in Ottawa, Smitherman noted that the budget was a prime opportunity for the Canadian government to show its commitment to making cannabis sustainable. This would involve reforming excise taxes on cannabis, he noted, adding that it would involve collaboration between territories, provinces and the national government.

CEO of British Columbia-based Pure Sunfarms Mandesh Dosanjh stated at the conference that the federal government had failed to hold up its end of the deal. He argued that the government had overlooked the cannabis industry and subjected it to enormous regulatory fee burdens and heavy taxes. As a result, these fees and taxes eat into the capital that cannabis producers could use to reinvest in their businesses. For every dollar of revenue cannabis producers earn, Dosanjh explained, 72 cents was collected as tax and fees while producers received only 28 cents.

This had created conditions that allow illegal operators to thrive, he noted, adding that legal businesses didn’t stand a chance in the sector unless the government offers relief and excise reform in the next budget.

The difficulties that cannabis companies are encountering in order to turn a decent profit inevitably also impact ancillary companies that operate in their jurisdictions, such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX) since dampened operations in the sector mean that those related companies will not register brisk business for their products.

420 with CNW — Twitter’s Decision Gives US Marijuana Companies Advertising Boost

Industry insiders say that Twitter’s recent policy change allowing state-legal marijuana businesses to advertise and market on the platform is a positive development for the sector and may prompt other digital advertising platforms to reconsider their bans on cannabis promotion. Twitter is simultaneously enhancing its entry into American marijuana advertising through a promotional incentive for the sector. However, there are still some uncertainties regarding the specifics of what Twitter’s new marijuana advertising policy allows and prohibits.

In the opinion of Lisa Buffo, CEO and founder of the Cannabis Marketing Association, the move is a definite sign that marijuana is becoming more accepted as a consumer packaged good.

Some industry participants have already acted to benefit from Twitter’s policy change, such as the vaporizer company Pax, which has declared that it is one of the platform’s first marijuana advertising partners. Other companies are waiting to see how things play out.

According to head of marketing at Theory Wellness, Thomas Winstanley, Twitter’s new policy on marijuana advertising is more symbolic than it is practical for the company’s operations at the moment. Winstanley states that Twitter’s guidelines for American cannabis businesses are different from those for Canada, where the platform already permits the advertising of legal cannabis businesses.

According to Twitter’s U.S. marijuana advertising guidelines, advertisers are prohibited from promoting cannabis products, including cannabidiol, except for hemp-extracted CBD products with a THC level lower than 0.3%. Winstanley understands that restriction to mean that Theory Wellness couldn’t attempt to maximize the return on its Twitter advertising investment by turning an advertisement into a sale. However, he thinks brand-awareness campaigns would be acceptable.

According to a Twitter employee, the platform enables advertisers to promote brand preferences and educational marijuana-related content for THC and CBD products, as well as services such as labs, delivery services, scientific developments and events. Twitter will provide the brands with a one-and-a-half-month advertising incentive by matching new ad spending up to $250,000 one-to-one.

It’s unclear whether Twitter’s digital advertising rivals, including Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp platforms run by Meta, will follow suit and permit cannabis advertisements.

Recently, Google Ads relaxed restrictions on CBD and hemp advertising in a few markets, but it continues to ban the majority of other marijuana marketing.

Cannabis PR specialist Rosie Mattio asserted that Twitter merits praise for being the first to adjust guidelines; Mattio is confident that the U.S. cannabis industry will feel loyalty to the privately owned social media site.

As cannabis companies gain traction from their adverts on Twitter, there could be a surge of demand, which could in turn cause companies such as REZYFi Inc. to see more interest in the specialized funding products that it offers to marijuana companies.
