420 with CNW — Gamers Could See Cognitive Performance Boost from CBD

Competitive gamers usually undergo random drug screening for performance-enhancing drugs in various leagues, including the Electronic Sports League. CBD and THC are both compounds found in cannabis. While both compounds possess a number of beneficial properties, THC induces a high when consumed.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the compounds that the league screens for. This compound may worsen mechanics that are necessary for gaming, including basic motor coordination for tasks such as organizing, making decisions and solving problems.

Many believe that it is CBD (cannabidiol), instead, which should be screened for given the compound’s potential to enhance cognitive performance. Preliminary studies have also found that the compound’s ability to decrease symptoms of health conditions is actually good for a person’s brain power. This means that gamers with mental conditions such as anxiety may observe that they’re more level-headed and relaxed if they game on CBD oil.

While researchers aren’t completely sure about how this compound interacts with an individual’s brain, they do know that the brain undergoes considerable changes once a CBD product is consumed. These changes include an increase in connectivity patterns and brain activity while an individual is in a resting state or carrying out cognitive tasks.

Other studies have also found that CBD improves auditory/visual processing, response inhibition, verbal memory and emotional processing, which are all important processes to gaming. Experts believe that consuming CBD in the long term may also be more beneficial than its short-term use. The compound provides various medical benefits, including:

Better quality of sleep

If you game late into the night, it may be harder for you to get a good night’s rest. Taking CBD may help improve your cognitive performance as well as your sleep quality. This compound works by easing symptoms that inhibit sleep. The best CBD products for sleeping usually have other natural alternatives that promote relaxation, including valerian root and melatonin.

Reduced stress

Competitive video games may cause some stress, which inhibits a person’s ability to perform well. The use of CBD helps decrease anxiety and improves one’s ability to focus.

Decreased joint, back and muscle pain

Gaming is known to cause muscle and joint pain, particularly in the hands, wrists, arms and fingers, as well as lower back pain. CBD possesses anti-inflammatory properties that may help manage this pain. Incorporating the compound’s use with stretches and exercises may boost effectiveness.

There is much more to learn about how different cannabis compounds interact with the body, and that could explain why different marijuana users of products sourced from entities such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) can report different or even contradictory effects when they use those products.

420 with CNW — Biotech Firm Identifies Possible Pathways Explaining How Cannabis Could Help Kids With Autism

Decades after the United States outlawed cannabis and carried out a drug war that had devastating effects on Black and Brown communities, the controversial plant is gaining popularity as an alternative medicine. Although prohibition has significantly hindered cannabis research, studies show that cannabis can be effective against some medical conditions including chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

An early-stage biotech startup called Cannaformatics has recently published research in the “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research” journal, showing how cannabis can interact with pathways in the brain to reduce autism in kids. Titled “The Potential of Salivary Lipid-Based Cannabis-Responsive Biomarkers to Evaluate Medical Cannabis Treatment in Children with ASD,” the research paper outlines possible pathways for treating juvenile autism.

Specifically, the paper points out 22 new lipid-based biomarkers that can be used to facilitate cannabis treatment in kids with autism spectrum disorder. This includes lipids in the central nervous system that would theoretically allow cannabis to have an effect on the neuron function of children diagnosed with ASD.

Cannaformatics is hoping the discovery of these biomarkers will bring it one step closer to developing personalized services to patients and healthcare providers who would like to use cannabinoid-derived treatments. The company first published a paper from its Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) pilot in December 2021. The pilot ASD study is sponsored by Whole Plant Access for Autism and Canniatric.

The first paper provided evidence of cannabis-responsive biomarkers and established them as a standard tool for determining the effect of medical marijuana. In conjunction, the two research papers illustrate how cannabis-responsive biomarkers could potentially be used to create marijuana treatments for patients and develop next-gen applications and medicines based on cannabinoids.

Cannaformatics CEO and cofounder Itzhak Kurek says that unmasking marijuana’s working mechanisms has allowed the company to show that cannabis-responsive biomarkers can grant clinicians and life-science companies new tools to help them understand how cannabis can help maintain central nervous system homeostasis in kids with ASD.

Research published in the latest paper also opens up new avenues for studying cannabis’ ability to alleviate neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS and Alzheimer’s disease. Cannaformatics is ready to put together the capital it needs to launch its ASD service platform and begin research on cannabis’ impact on neurodegenerative diseases.

According to chief commercial officer Kenneth Epstein, publishing the second paper was an important moment for Cannaformatics as it proves that the company’s technology is valid and places them at the forefront of biotechnology in the medical marijuana treatment segment.

As more research comes out about the potential therapeutic applications of cannabis, the public will keep evolving in its perception of the various marijuana products sold companies such as  Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) in the different markets in which they operate.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) Preps First Export Following Colombia’s New Export Regulations

Flora Growth (NASDAQ: FLGC), a leading all-outdoor cultivator and manufacturer of global cannabis products and brands, has announced that Colombia has completed its required regulations to allow cannabis companies operating in the country, including Flora Growth, to export THC and CBD dried flower. The country passed Resolution 539 on April 1, 2022, which is a regulatory checklist for companies; the resolution includes export quotas. The export steps included in the resolution outline adjustments to Flora’s approved 43.6-ton quota, which means the addition of dried flower can be included with FLGC’s existing purchase agreements from countries including Germany, Israel, Australia, South Africa, Portugal and Malta. According to the company, the updated regulation also includes a requirement for genetics registrations for all high-THC cultivars. The company also noted that its quota already permitted the export of derivative products produced at its cultivation facility. “Flora applauds the recent announcement by the Colombian government as we have been working diligently to have all the necessary approvals and capabilities available to produce high THC flower, including multiple cannabis strains with THC levels over 20 percent,” said Flora Growth’s chief commercial officer Jason Warnock in the press release. “This resolution also clears the path to export dried CBD flower to markets including the United States where Flora already sells hundreds of CBD products via owned brands like JustCBD, MIND, and Mambe.”

420 with CNW — IRS Increases Audits of Cannabis Businesses After Lull Caused by Pandemic

The IRS has increased its audits of cannabis businesses after a long hiatus brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Tax experts in the marijuana industry expect a new wave of audits to be conducted that target cannabis companies and their 2019 returns to be conducted, which may result in additional tax bills for these companies.

Rachel Gillette, a tax attorney in Denver, states that the pandemic caused the IRS to slow down but now with things picking back up, the federal tax agency is running more audits in different parts of the country, particularly in places where marijuana is legal. Gillette noted that she has observed a considerable increase in notification letters for audits being sent to cannabis companies that are her clients. She added that she’d heard of other companies in the states of Colorado, as well as Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida and California, who had also been issued with audit letters.

The federal tax agency may also be broadening its focus to include forms needed for cash transactions of $10,000 and above, which cannabis companies must file with the agency.

Tax experts recommend that marijuana companies get their financial statements in order as soon as possible, especially since the tax agency is skilled at finding tax dollars owed by cannabis businesses. The federal agency has been targeting the legal cannabis sector for a while now, which many believe is because Section 280E of the Internal Revenue Code prevents companies that traffic in controlled substances from claiming tax deductions. This section also establishes significantly higher federal tax rates for state-legal cannabis firms.

The IRS has, since 2010, established roughly five compliance initiative projects that involved targeted audits on marijuana businesses. These audits brought to light millions in unpaid taxes, with experts noting that until a change is made to Section 280E, the federal tax agency will continue to view the cannabis industry as a cash cow.

Recently, the IRS also began to conduct audits tied to FORM 8300, which is a requirement for any cash filings that are part of a business’s transactions. Tax attorney Regina Unegovsky states that she observed a more than double increase in audits since last summer among cannabis companies in northern California, noting that the IRS begun conducting audits for cash filings, which was a new approach to cannabis businesses.

These changes come after De Lon Harris, the IRS commissioner, pledged last fall that the federal agency would help cannabis companies comply with their tax obligations.

As any licensed company such as American Cannabis Partners will tell you, one of the first things any cannabis company needs to do to avoid problems is meet its tax obligations whether at the federal or state level. Therefore, the audits are likely to catch smaller companies that are still struggling to put appropriate systems in place.

420 with CNW — Is It Worthwhile to Vacuum Seal Cannabis?

Anyone who uses or has used cannabis in the past has probably heard that storing cannabis flower in an airtight container keeps it fresh and preserves its quality. While some users may not understand the logic behind this advice, there’s a solid scientific reason why vacuum sealing cannabis is essential.

Once a cannabis plant matures, continued exposure to the elements causes it to degrade. That’s why marijuana cultivators have to harvest their crop at just the right time; any later and the plants will start to lose their potency. Once the plants have been harvested and processed, the same level of care is needed to preserve them.

In this case, it is proper storage. Did you know that how and where you store your cannabis will have a major impact on its flavor and potency? Most users prefer the traditional jar but vacuum sealers can keep your cannabis fresh even longer by keeping air and moisture away from your stash.

Continued exposure to the elements alongside heat will degrade cannabis and render it useless. The first thing you want to do is to keep your marijuana away from any heat sources because heat will cause the terpenes in the cannabis to dry out, killing its flavor and taste. Conversely, super-low temperatures will also degrade the trichomes and impact the flavor. A dark closet or drawer far  from any heat sources would be an ideal storage location.

Light is the second foe. The cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis will break down under exposure to ultraviolet light, essentially stripping the cannabis of its potency and flavor. Storing marijuana away from the sun and any other light source will prevent this.

Your third enemy is water. High humidity can cause cannabis to trap more moisture and encourage the growth of mold on buds. A humidity of 59–63% will prevent the growth of mold while keeping cannabis from drying out.

But if you are looking to purchase cannabis in bulk and store it for a long time, vacuum sealing could be the way to go. It has already been proven that this method can keep foods such as meat fresh, and many cannabis users are already using vacuum sealing to store their flower.

Vacuum seals are a great way to prevent mold growth because they are completely airtight and do not let in any air or moisture. Furthermore, this method will prevent marijuana’s distinctive odor from getting out, keeping your cannabis private and preserving its fragrance and aroma. Ultimately, it wouldn’t be wise to invest in high-quality marijuana products made by companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) and then let those products degrade rapidly due to improper storage.

420 with CNW — U.S. Senators Unanimously Approve Cannabis Research Legislation

Last week, the Senate approved a cannabis measure that would promote research into cannabis. The unanimously approved legislation, titled the Cannabidiol and Marijuana Research Expansion Act, was sponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley, Brian Schatz and Dianne Feinstein.

The bill’s approval will allow the process of application for scientists who want to study the plant to be streamlined. Under the measure, the U.S. attorney general would be afforded a 60-day deadline to either approve an application or request more information from the applicant. This is in addition to creating an expedited pathway for researchers who would like to request access to higher quantities of drugs classified under Schedule I.

It also encourages the FDA to develop marijuana-derived medications by allowing practitioners, research institutions, accredited medical schools and manufacturers holding Schedule I registrations to grow their own marijuana for research purposes. Here, the DEA would receive a mandate to approve applications for manufacturers of FDA-approved, cannabis-derived medications.

The bill also requires that the Department of Health and Human Services submit two reports: one on the barriers to marijuana research and how to overcome those obstacles and another on the potential health benefits of cannabis. In addition to this, it clarifies that physicians are allowed to talk about the benefits and risks of cannabis with their patients.

In a press release, Feinstein stated that the current regulations and rules made it hard for researchers to study how cannabis and cannabis-derived medications could be used optimally in the treatment of a myriad of health conditions. She explained that this bill would reduce the obstacles around the research process, which would in turn help get cannabis-derived, FDA-approved drugs to patients safely.

Grassley echoed Feinstein’s thoughts, arguing that the bill would also help to better understand the cannabis plant as well as its potential side effects and benefits. He explained that the legislation would empower the Food and Drug Administration to analyze medical cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD) products in a responsible and safe way, letting the public decide whether these products could be used in the future based on scientific data.

Schatz added that the measure’s approval brought legislators one step closer to eliminating the barriers, which made it difficult for scientists to conduct research on the safety and effectiveness of marijuana use, which would afford patients more treatment options.

An earlier version of this particular legislation was unanimously approved by the Senate in 2020, before being reintroduced last year. Once this bill becomes law, industry players such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) could see the easing of some of the bottlenecks which have made studying marijuana a difficult task in the past.

Contrary to what many may think, growing cannabis isn’t as easy as throwing seeds into a hole and watering them every few days. It’s an intensive process that requires plenty of dedication to detail throughout every stage to ensure the plants come up healthy and in plenty.

In addition, marijuana cultivation isn’t always easy on the environment. A single cannabis plant can drink up to a gallon of water per day and requires 16 essential nutrients to grow healthy and strong. Studies have found that without proper regulations and growing practices in place, marijuana grows can contribute to ecological issues, including water waste, land degradation, and even wildlife deaths.

Although some of these issues occur due to illegal cannabis grows on public land, unscrupulous licensed growers can also contribute to environmental degradation due to poor growing practices. One solid way for marijuana cultivators to reduce their impact on the environment is to use “living soil.”

Living soil refers to growing material such as compost that’s teeming with microorganisms such as protozoa, healthy bacteria, amoebas, and worms as well as their casings. It could even contain glacial rock dust and kelp extract.

This living soil is a much cleaner alternative to filling your grow medium with artificial nutrients than throwing it away once the plants are mature. Living soil also reduces the need for pesticides and fungicides because it spawns strong plants that can fight these issues themselves.

This soil could also be a cost-effective way of growing cannabis. According to Tom Moylan, the director of cultivation at Maryland-based cannabis company Culta, using living soil for cannabis grows will be significantly cheaper in the long run. While building up a reserve of organic soil may be a little costly, the investment will start to pay off by the second year.

Culta, which grows cannabis outdoors, was using around 20 tons of soil when it started its outdoor cultivation operation. This soil would have had to be replaced each year, increasing the company’s operational costs as well as its impact on the environment.

However, living soil doesn’t need to be replaced every year. Moylan says that once the soil and nutrients are mixed and installed in growing beds, the mixture can be used for years. Culta has also included cover crops to reduce erosion caused by aerating the soil and to increase the nitrogen content in the soil.

The resulting grow medium is full of nutrients and retains water naturally, making it suitable for cultivation even when there is drought and extreme heat. Living soil has the potential to significantly reduce impact on the environment by eliminating the need for a new grow medium and artificial nutrients every year.

Since cultivation methods can have an effect on the bottom line of a company, it is likely that established companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) are exploring all ways to continually reduce their costs and minimize their carbon footprint in every aspect of their operations.
