420 with CNW — USDA Partners with Cornell University to Conduct Hemp Webinars

The USDA announced last week that it would be teaming up with Cornell University to hold a webinar series that promoted hemp education. According to a press release, the series will feature experts in hemp production, research and academia as well as the private industry.

The first episode, which was held last week, focused on outdoor growing of hemp. The next episode will look into the indoor cultivation of hemp. Other topics to be discussed over the next couple of months include the economics of hemp production, the endocannabinoid system, genetics, food sciences, hemp extraction and hemp processing.

Zachary Stansell, the acting hemp curator in the Department of Agriculture, stated that the department’s Agricultural Research Service (“ARS”) dealt with agricultural challenges which affected all Americans. Stansell explained that hemp was emerging as an economically significant and multiuse crop, which was why the series was designed to increase the inclusivity, equity and diversity of the ARS’ mission while offering hemp-specific training, education and networking opportunities to communities that had historically been underserved.

For every event, experts will discuss the topic in question for about 40 minutes, after which participants will be allowed to ask questions. This partnership announcement comes after the USDA revealed that it was taking necessary action to improve insurance policies for businesses dealing with hemp in an attempt to make them more flexible.

Since hemp was legalized under the 2018 farm bill, the department has sought input from stakeholders as the industry grows in addition to taking some steps to align insurance policies of hemp with those of other lawful plants. For instance, the USDA made it possible for hemp cultivators to quality for Multi-Peril Crop Insurance in 2020, in addition to a couple of other coverage programs for which the plant is now eligible.

The USDA also launched a large-scale survey for hemp farmers as part of its overall outreach to gain insight into the current hemp market. The response forms for this survey, which began in August, can be filled out online or via mail.

In the survey, the department asks questions about the primary and secondary uses of hemp, acreage needed for operations, outdoor hemp production plans and prices producers usually bring in. The department’s main areas of interest include extracts such as CBD, smokable hemp, the plant’s seeds and fiber and grain for human consumption.

The survey is being completed in partnership with the University of Kentucky and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. Hopefully, the USDA will use the information collected to pass regulations that give sector actors such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) an improved environment within which to do what they do best.

420 with CNW — Amazon Backs Republican-Led Bill Ending Federal Cannabis Prohibition

Late last year, a GOP Congresswoman sent waves across America’s nascent cannabis industry when she introduced a bill to end federal cannabis prohibition in the country and regulate the controversial plant. With cannabis reform being seen as a primarily progressive effort spearheaded by the left, Rep. Nancy Mace’s States Reform Act was meant to act as a compromise between Democrats and Republicans. Although Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his colleagues had already unveiled a federal legalization bill, it stands little chance of advancing to the President’s desk without Republican support.

In a move that is bound to bolster the GOP-led legislation’s standing in Capitol Hill, Amazon has announced its support for the States Reform Act. Currently the second-largest private employer in America, the e-commerce giant has backed Democrat-led efforts to legalize cannabis in the past, including Schumer’s Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. According to Amazon’s public policy division, the company is “pleased to endorse” the Republican-led bill. Amazon believes it is time for America to reform its cannabis prohibition policies, the company says, and it is committed to helping the cannabis reform cause.

Forbes reports that a couple of months after Mace unveiled her cannabis bill, she had a meeting with Amazon during which the Seattle-based multinational endorsed the legislation. Mace has also received the backing of Americans for Prosperity, one of the most influential conservative groups on the globe. And contrary to what many may think, Amazon isn’t throwing its weight behind cannabis reform to create another revenue stream. The e-commerce companies don’t want to sell cannabis, Mace says.

Rather, Amazon’s interest in cannabis reform is partly because it will open up the hiring pool by an estimated 10%, Amazon vice president of public policy Brian Huseman says. The company has already started implementing procannabis internal policies; last year, Amazon updated employee policy to end regular cannabis testing for most of its employees. The policy change, which would also restore employment eligibility for employees who had already been punished for positive THC tests in the past, was celebrated by industry stakeholders and cannabis reform advocates in the country.

At the time, Amazon said the policy change was because it was becoming increasingly difficult to implement a national cannabis testing program that was equitable and consistent due to different state cannabis laws. Furthermore, Amazon said, data has shown that such drug testing “disproportionately impacts people of color” and limits their access to employment opportunities.

With e-commerce giant Amazon warming to the prospect of ending marijuana prohibition, more pressure will pile on federal lawmakers to enact reforms that allow sector players such as BevCanna Enterprise Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) to operate freely across the country.

420 with CNW — Congressman Wants to Add Cannabis Banking Language to America COMPETES Act

The sponsor of the SAFE Banking Act, Rep. Ed Perlmutter, recently stated that he’s planning to attach an amendment to the proposal for a broader measure that deals with innovation and research in the manufacturing and technology sectors. The congressman is looking for another vehicle to pursue his initiative after it was removed from a separate defense legislation in 2021.

The measure’s language had been successfully attached to the National Defense Authorization Act on the House side but was removed later, during bicameral negotiations. At the time, the congressman said that senate leadership was to blame for the decision to remove the banking amendment from the legislation.

Perlmutter’s measure has stalled in the senate, despite clearing the house in five forms. The house sponsor’s most recent attempt to get the measure enacted is filing an amendment that contains language from the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking (“SAFE”) Act to the America COMPETES Act, which doesn’t deal with issues concerning marijuana.

In a press release, Perlmutter stated that small and big marijuana-related businesses and their employees needed access to capital as well as the banking system in order to operate in a safe and efficient manner and compete in the burgeoning global marijuana marketplace. He added that the SAFE Act was a good opportunity to enact federal marijuana reform this year and would ensure that marijuana businesses were treated the same as other legitimate and legal businesses.

The congressman is committed to getting his measure approved and signed into law, despite having plans to retire from congress after this session. It is uncertain whether the America COMPETES Act will be an effective vehicle for the marijuana banking bill.

To be formally considered on the house floor when the organization initiates proceedings for the research and innovation act, the new cannabis banking act amendment will need to go through the House Rules Committee. The deadline for filing amendments was last Friday. The panel is scheduled to take amendments up this week.

This failure to approve the modest banking initiative has some GOP party members puzzled, as Democrats have control of the White House and are also the majority in both chambers. For instance, Republicans such as Rep. Rand Paul have criticized their Democrat counterparts over this issue.

In an interview, Rodney Hood, a federal financial regulator and former chair of the federal National Credit Union Administration, offered advice on how to steer through the state-federal conflict, which had made financial institutions reluctant to work with marijuana businesses, noting that cannabis legalization was a question of when and not if.

When cannabis is finally legalized at the federal level, industry companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) will have a bigger marketplace within which to operate with having to work through a complex mix of laws.

420 with CNW — Seven Ways Hemp Seed Oil Can Be Used in Body Care

Hemp seed oil has many uses. Did you know that hemp oils can be used to improve and care for one’s nails, hair and skin? Below we look at a couple of ways to use hemp seed oil in body care.

As a moisturizer

Hemp oils have a lot of nutrients, including omega fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, which help revitalize and moisturize the skin, particularly dry skin. This means that these oils can be used as a brightening and hydrating face mask.

Hemp seed oil masks can also be left overnight for deeper hydration. However, if you already have oily skin, you may break out if you use these masks.

The minerals and omega fatty acids found in hemp seeds also promote healing. This means that applying hemp oils to problematic areas of the skin can prevent them from becoming painful and damaged.

Tackle acne

Hemp seed oil may help reduce and treat the signs of acne by protecting the lipid layer of the skin and hydrating it. This is mostly useful for individuals who have extremely dry skin. Hemp seed oil can also be used to cleanse and remove makeup as its dissolves the waxes and oils in makeup. They are particularly helpful in removing waterproof eye makeup.

Revitalize hair

Some individuals who have damaged hair can use hemp seed oil in place of conditioners to repair and revitalize damaged hair. These oils offer more noticeable effects in comparison to regular conditioners as they provide a deeper level of hydration.

Manage skin irritations

Hemp oils may possess natural anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to treat minor skin irritations and blemishes. Applying hemp oil to inflamed or red areas of skin could offer fast-acting relief.

Evidence has also shown that hemp seed oil can help alleviate symptoms of eczema. A 2005 study found that the addition of a small amount of the oil to an individual’s daily diet relieved signs of eczema.

Strengthen nails

The proteins, minerals, fatty acids and vitamins in hemp seed oil help strengthen and hydrate nails, thereby helping avoid issues such as nails that easily break or that never seem to grow.

Relaxation

Hemp oils infused with calming aromas such as chamomile or lavender are good for relaxation, particularly when they’re used in the evening.

Reduce muscle, joint pains

Hemp creams can be used to reduce pain, improve flexibility, and ease stiff muscles and joints. Some argue that hemp oils can be used in these ways, but you’re advised to opt for a cream that’s developed for treating muscle pain.

Many companies, including American Cannabis Partners, have opted to focus on different segments of the cannabis market, with many of them catering to the needs of people who would like to use marijuana either medicinally or recreationally. Buyers therefore have a huge pool of products to select from to address their needs.

420 with CNW — Most Americans Would Elect Someone Who Uses Marijuana, Survey Reveals

Many Americans have revealed in a new poll that they have no problem electing an individual who uses marijuana. According to the survey conducted by YouGov, 58% of the interviewees indicated that they would elect someone who takes marijuana in their free time. However, 21% wouldn’t cast that vote.

The data used in the survey was collected from 4,096 individuals based in the United States. This survey comes at about the same time that Senate candidate Gary Chambers (D) released a campaign ad in which he was smoking cannabis. During the now-viral video, Chambers discusses the racial discrimination that comes with the prohibition.

Results from the poll also revealed that the majority of Democrats would be fine with voting in a casual user, with 68% of this group saying that they would be willing to vote in such a person while 15% wouldn’t. Meanwhile 47% of Republicans said they would vote for a candidate who uses marijuana as long as the candidate aligns with their other views.

In a survey conducted by Gallup in 2020, findings revealed that there was an increasing acceptance of candidates who use cannabis. The interviewers found that the consumption of cannabis was more morally acceptable than gay relations, animal testing, a woman’s right to choose whether to abort or not, and the removal of the death penalty.

With increasing legislation of marijuana rolling across the country, there has been rising support from people running for different offices. Incidents of candidates as well as sitting politicians publicly consuming marijuana and sharing its benefits have increased.

Chambers’ campaign video might have hit the mainstream, but this is not the first time a political candidate has done this. In 2020 while running for office in Illinois, Anthony Clark shared his experience using marijuana and even smoked a joint during an ad for his campaign. He hosted a weed party and called for legal reforms. In 2019, House Representative James Comer displayed the CBD oil products that he used in front of a committee hearing. A similar occurrence was seen when State Governor Jay Inslee mentioned that he legally grows marijuana while referring to the Washington State’s laws on cultivation.

It does not come as a surprise, therefore, that public perception on marijuana supports its legality. A recent survey funded by Smart Approaches to Marijuana revealed that as many as 68% of Americans would want cannabis to be legal and regulated for recreational and medical purposes.

As much as the majority supports ending prohibition, it is notable that President Joseph Biden has not made any reforms since beginning his presidency. In a separate YouGov survey, the majority of Americans believe that he will not fulfill his campaign promise of cannabis decriminalization.

The growing support for marijuana legalization has thus far not translated into meaningful legal reforms at the federal level, and this must be frustrating to industry players such as Red White & Bloom Brands (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) that have to navigate a complex legal maze just to operate in jurisdictions which have created enabling laws.

420 with CNW — Thailand Greenlights Marijuana Home Grows

Earlier this week, the narcotics board in Thailand announced that it would be removing marijuana from its list of controlled drugs, which would allow households in the country to grow the herb. Thailand was the first country in southeast Asia to legalize cannabis for research and medical use in 2018.

Under this new law, individuals can grow marijuana at home after they have notified the local government. However, the country’s Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated in an interview that the marijuana grown can’t be used for commercial purposes if one hadn’t obtained a license.

Before home growing of marijuana plants becomes legal in the country, citizens will have to wait for 120 days to pass after the rule has been published in the official Royal Gazette.

The country’s health ministry plans to also introduce a draft measure to parliament soon that includes guidelines on the legal use of marijuana, including the plant’s commercial use and production as well as details on its recreational use.

In a previous statement, the country’s food and drug regulator chief Paisal Dankhum stated that homegrown marijuana could only be utilized for medical purposes such as traditional medicine, noting that random inspections would be carried out. Under the draft measure, punishments for growing marijuana at home without notifying one’s local government will be a fine of about 20,000 baht, which is roughly $605. Individuals found selling cannabis without a license will be fined roughly $9,000 and/or be jailed for three years.

This move is the next step in the country’s goal of promoting marijuana as a cash crop and allowing farming families to grow the plant as a way to generate income. Data from the World Bank shows that nearly one-third of Thailand’s labor force is involved in agriculture.

Last year, Thai cosmetic companies and drink manufacturers launched products with CBD and hemp after the use of this compound was approved for use in consumer goods. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the two main compounds found in marijuana, the other substance being THC. Unlike THC, which induces a high, CBD doesn’t make people high.

Before this recent measure was introduced, licensed cultivators of marijuana were only allowed to use the plant’s leaves, stalks, roots and stems. The partial ban on the other parts of the marijuana plant was approved during Thailand’s marijuana legalization process. It was implemented because the plant’s flowers, buds and seeds usually contain high amounts of THC.

As additional countries and jurisdictions bring cannabis prohibition to an end, more individuals will have access to marijuana-based offerings, such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc.’s (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) suite of health & wellness products.

420 with CNW — How Long Will Cannabis Edibles Remain in the Body?

Smoking cannabis flower is the most popular way to consume the popular drug. For decades, centuries even, it was the most common way of taking cannabis. However, there has been an increasing number of people, both regular users and newbies, who have been turning away from smoking to edibles in the past decade or two. This is partly because people are becoming more aware of the health risks attributed to smoking and are looking for healthier alternatives that will allow them to consume cannabis without endangering their health.

Edibles fill this niche quite nicely. In fact, cannabis-infused products have become so popular over the past couple of years that experts predict the global cannabis edibles market will be worth a whopping $11.8 billion by 2027. However, plenty of people don’t know much about cannabis-infused edibles and how they affect the body other than the fact that they are edible. This ignorance is often the difference between experiencing an enjoyable high or descending into an anxiety-ridden panic attack.

The main difference between eating edibles and smoking cannabis flower is that when you consume a cannabis edible, the cannabis stays in your system for much longer. When you smoke cannabis flower, the cannabinoids contained in the smoke are instantly absorbed into your blood by the vast network of blood vessels in your lungs. Edibles, on the other hand, have to go through a longer route before they reach your blood. As a result, a cannabis edible will remain in your body for much longer than cannabis flower, resulting in a more sustained high.

How does this work?

After you eat a cannabis-infused edible, its first stop will be the stomach. Here, digestive juices will break the edibles down and blood vessels along the stomach and digestive tract will absorb the THC within the edible. This THC, along with any other cannabinoids, will head to the liver where it is converted into 11-hyrdoxy THC before gradually entering general circulation over the next couple of hours. Since 11-hyrdoxy THC is more potent and psychoactive than regular THC, edibles tend to create an intense, long-lasting high.

How long will cannabis edibles remain in your body? The answer: it depends.

For most people, the effects take 30 minutes to two hours to kick in and can last for up to 12 hours, and you could still be feeling residual effects up to 24 hours later depending on the strain. Furthermore, it may take your body days to completely purge the cannabis. For regular uses, it can take up to 30 days for the cannabis to leave their systems.

Given that the effects of cannabis can vary from one individual to another, it is best to start with a low-potency product obtained from one of the many licensed companies such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) so that you are certain that you are consuming the best available products on the market.
