420 with CNW — Why Large Companies Are Scrambling to Enter Cannabis Drinks Space

The cannabis drinks segment has been steadily growing in popularity for the past couple of years. As the cannabis market has matured, players in the cannabis space have been developing a wide variety of products in a bid to capture a part of the massive cannabis market. Cannabis-infused beverages are the latest entrant in the cannabis market. Although the space is only a few years old, the global cannabis beverage market is already projected to be worth $2 billion by 2026.

Some of the biggest beverage companies in the world are betting big on cannabis-infused beverages. In March, Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth, once the largest cannabis company in the world, launched its own brand of flavored CBD beverages called Quatreau in the United States. Six months later, Canopy Growth partnered with New York-based Karna Water to launch CBD-infused water called Karma CBD Water, available at 25,000 retailers across America. In August, American-Canadian brewing company Molson Coors expanded Verywell, its CBD beverage line under Truss USA, a joint venture with HEXO USA Inc. to 17 states.

Michael Bronstein, president of the American Trade Association for Cannabis, says both cannabis companies and mainstream beverage companies have shown considerable interest in cannabis beverages. A Cannabis Beverage Council launched by the association this year has even attracted the attention of Adolphus Busch V, the great-great-grandson of the founder of brewing company Anheuser Busch. Adolphus Busch V is the founder of Colorado-based ABV Cannabis.

Industry analysts say the segment’s popularity is due to three factors: demand for alcohol alternatives amid a generational decline in alcohol consumption, technological advancements that have significantly improved the quality of cannabis drinks, and fewer places allowing people to legally smoke or vape. According to Canopy Growth and Molson Coors, the companies are currently focusing their attention on drinks infused with hemp-derived CBD since THC beverages are still federally prohibited. As the public becomes more aware of CBD’s medical potential, demand for CBD-infused beverages is sure to increase.

A joint survey by Chicago-based company Aclara Research and Ipsos found that although cannabis beverages aren’t used as frequently as edibles, flower or vapes, people are increasingly using them in social situations.

The demand for cannabis beverages actually makes sense, analysts say, when you realize that alcohol consumption has been declining steadily over the past few decades. Beer only makes up 12.5% of generation Z’s alcohol consumption compared to 25% for millennials and 50% for baby boomers and generation X. With business drying up, mainstream beverage companies are casting their nets out for the next big thing.

And as those companies enter this coveted segment, they will have to contend with already established cannabis drinks companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) that are making their presence felt among consumers.

420 with CNW — Insurance, Labor and Financial Groups Urge Legislators to Enact Cannabis Banking Reform

Recently, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Credit Union National Association, the American Bankers Association and 11 other organizations sent a letter to Senate leadership urging members to enact cannabis banking reform as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.

The letter implores members of the Senate to adopt language that protects financial institutions that work with state-legal marijuana businesses in the defense bill. Federal data shows that most financial institutions are hesitant to have marijuana companies as clients, which is most probably because of the plant’s classification in the Controlled Substances Act.

In the new letter, the labor groups and financial associations stated that they had joined together as the current state of affairs was unsustainable for communities, workers, law-abiding financial institutions and ancillary businesses. The organizations added that enacting the SAFE Banking Act would also offer legitimate businesses access to necessary protections and insurance products that are offered to other businesses.

The organizations continued explaining that the banking reform would strengthen national security and support the thousands of veterans who depend on the marijuana industry for employment, medical treatment or business opportunities. In addition to this, the groups noted that workers in marijuana-related businesses were constantly in danger because of the cash intensive transactions they completed every day.

The letter maintained that while the organizations understood that establishing a true federal regulatory framework for marijuana was a lengthy process, they believed that the banking reform was a crucial first step in ensuring that legal marijuana marketplaces were transparent, legal and safe.

Other organizations who signed off on this letter include the National Association of Realtors, the Electronic Transaction Association, the National Bankers Association, the American Land and Title Association, the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.

In November, the Credit Union National Association along with other credit union associations sent a similar letter to the Senate committee leadership. Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee also sent a letter to legislators urging them to include the SAFE Banking Act in the final National Defense Authorization Act.

Shortly after this, Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper from Colorado made a similar request in a separate letter to the Senate. Thus far, the House has already adopted language from the SAFE Banking Act in its version of the defense legislation.

However, the measure has stalled in the Senate, with the current Senate Majority Leader suggesting that he’d consider enacting the SAFE Banking Act if it contained provisions on social equity.

Enacting cannabis banking reforms could ease the headaches that the entire industry, including companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), have to deal with on a regular basis.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade Inc. (SGMD) Releases Corporate Update, Notes Nug Avenue Growth

Sugarmade (OTC: SGMD), an emerging leader in the vertically integrated cannabis marketplace based in California, is moving toward new growth initiatives and expanding organically, according to a recent corporate update. The company noted that the expansion was organic, within the framework of its primary operating vision. Currently, Sugarmade operates a Nug Avenue location in Los Angeles, which has seen significant growth since opening its doors in March of this year. Within only three months, the location reported 10,000 unique members, and that impressive growth has continued, with the company most recently reporting 25,000 unique members. Sugarmade is planning to open a second location, with paperwork already submitted; additional properties are also being evaluated for future locations, with some of those properties expanding outside the LA area. In addition, the company reported that it is utilizing the Onfleet last-mile delivery solution with Blaze, which offers the company a competitive advantage. The new technology features AI-based automated dispatch, automatic SMS customer notifications with accurate ETAs, real-time driver tracking, proof-of-delivery, feedback collection tools and powerful analytics, which all combine to ensure an optimal delivery experience for customers. The company reported that, using the new tech, its average delivery time decreased to 41.51 minutes with customer satisfaction increasing to an average of 4.83 out of 5 stars. “We have seen rapid and accelerating organic growth in customers at our initial Nug Avenue location since we opened the doors in March,” said Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan. “The good news is that this trend survived reopening, with a reduction in pandemic-related measures and regulations having no impact on our growth. That provides a very healthy backdrop as we look ahead to opening new locations, upgrading our service, and verticalizing our model through our own cultivation resources.”

420 with CNW — Colorado University to Study Impact of Marijuana on Exercise

Studies on the use of marijuana during exercise have produced varying findings, with one study finding that older individuals who used the herb got more exercise done when compared with those who didn’t. To make sense of the drug’s benefits, the University of Colorado Boulder plans to conduct a study that will focus on how legal market marijuana impacts performance during exercise.

The research will assess CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and the effects these compounds have on an individual’s body during athletic performance.

Laurel Gibson, a PhD student in the institution’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, stated that marijuana had been linked to a decline in motivation, adding that simultaneously, researchers had seen a growing number of anecdotal reports of individuals using it in combination with everything from running and snowboarding to yoga and golfing.

Prior research in exercise neuroscience suggests that cannabinoid-like chemicals that an individual’s brain produces naturally are what cause “runner’s high” rather than endorphins. The institution will also examine whether supplementing marijuana during exercise will induce the runner’s high effect.

The research, titled the Study on Physical Activity and Cannabis Effects (“SPACE”), is currently looking for 50 volunteers who already use marijuana while exercising. The study will include three sessions.

During the first session, participants will take a baseline physical and cognitive test, where researchers will measure each individual’s heart rate. After this, each participants will be directed to go to a local dispensary and pick up either a THC-dominant strain or a CBD-dominant strain.

For the second session, each participant will be observed while they are working out when sober. During the session, participants will be required to run on the treadmill for half an hour and answer questions every 10 minutes that assess things such as the pain they’re in, what they’re thinking about and how hard the workout feels.

For the third session, each participant will again be observed while they work out, this time after using the strain they were assigned during the first session.

The researchers hope that by comparing marijuana and sober workout sessions, they can find evidence supporting the herb’s benefits for exercise. Researchers conducting the study also hope to discover other benefits of marijuana as well.

Angela Bryan, a professor at UC’s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, stated that if marijuana could ease inflammation and pain, thereby helping older individuals to become more active, that would be a great benefit.

As the academia gets in on studying the effects of cannabis on consumers, industry actors such as Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS) are likely to be more credible when they share with the public what they already know about marijuana products.

420 with CNW — Agency Head Admits No Evidence Links Occasional Cannabis Use to Harm

The road to legalizing cannabis in America has been long and tedious. Even with dozens of states now allowing medical and recreational marijuana, cannabis reform activists are still fighting. One of the toughest hurdles they have faced so far is the stigma generated from decades of anticannabis propaganda and prohibition. Cannabis legalization opponents argued that, among other things, cannabis would increase drug use among the youth, boost criminal activity, and cause a general decline in society. However, several studies on the relationship between cannabis legalization, public health, and criminal activity have revealed that these fears were largely unfounded.

During a recent interview, National Institute on Drug Abuse director Nora Volkow said she hasn’t seen any evidence that proves sporadic cannabis use by adults is harmful. Speaking with FiveThirtyEight, she said that to her knowledge there is no proof that occasional cannabis use has negative health effects. The correlation still hasn’t been tested, she said, and more research needs to be done to better understand whether using marijuana intermittently will harm your health. Volkow also mentioned that she was surprised by research indicating that cannabis users tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI).

Given how troublesome a high BMI can be people get older, she says, this is another thing researchers need to look into. Volkow’s views on cannabis are relatively progressive; while she hasn’t declared her support for broad legalization, she prefers to approach cannabis from a scientific point of view.

Thus, she acknowledges that there is currently no proof that irregular cannabis use is harmful. However, marijuana use by young people absolutely concerns her, she says, adding that consuming high-THC products on a daily basis can harm even adult brains. Still, Volkow said that youth cannabis use has not increased in the wake of state cannabis laws in an August podcast.

She emphasized the need to look at drug addiction as a public health problem rather than a criminal issue. The stigma associated with addiction and drug abuse is preventing America from dealing with its current drug crisis, she wrote in an op-ed earlier this month, and the government bears significant blame for the proliferation of this stigma. Criminal justice policies, especially the failed war on drugs, punished scores of people who had medical conditions rather than give them the treatment they needed. Policies that promoted decriminalization and increased treatment would be a much better alternative.

As leading scientists, such as the head of NIDA, speak out against the misconceptions plaguing the marijuana industry, sector players such as American Cannabis Partners could end up with a less-hostile perception of the plant they cultivate.
