CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) CEO Discusses Expansion and the Road Ahead in Shareholder Letter

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today released a shareholder letter on behalf of its CEO, which discussed tremendous growth of its BudCars business, preparations to open a BudCars hub in Los Angeles, as well as what the company believes is a much larger opportunity ahead. “We have completed considerable analysis, the results of which point to strong returns from capital investment in both verticalizing BudCars operations and expanding to multiple new regions,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan stated in the letter, discussing the path, supported by end-demand and market positioning, which offers the potential to expand at extremely cost-effective levels in the second half of 2020. “To accomplish this, we have organized a Reg-A+ funding round targeting $6 million in capital financing. We have not yet established the precise pricing for this funding round, but we are committed to working with a top-tier investment banking partner. We have initially allowed a pricing scale with a price well above our current market pricing for SGMD shares. This is not due to any plans for a near-term reverse split. Instead, it reflects the rapid growth and strong financial performance we are currently experiencing and anticipate as we move into the second half of the year.”

420 with CNW – The Legal Medical Marijuana Industry in Australia Only Serves 3% of Patients, Study Finds

More than 50 countries around the world have legalized some form of medical cannabis while six countries have allowed the recreational use of cannabis by adults. And while these territories have made inroads into the massive global cannabis market, most people in jurisdictions with legal weed still get their supply from the illicit market. One such jurisdiction is Australia. Australia legalized medical cannabis back in 2016 when the government created a system where doctors could prescribe the substance to treat various conditions. However, a recent study has found that only 3% of Australians using medical cannabis access it through the government’s regulated program.

According to the study, which was published in the Harm Reduction Journal, the cost of legal marijuana and lack of education around the program has kept illegal dealers in business. It compared two instances of the voluntary Cannabis as Medicine Survey, the first just before medical cannabis was legalized in 2016 and the second two years later. Researchers compared data from 1,388 respondents to get a better idea of how the introduction of a regulated market changed how Australians accessed medical cannabis, and they found that nothing much had changed.

Over 90% of the respondents said the regulated framework doesn’t work well enough, and a third of the respondents said that legal weed is insanely expensive. Cannabis is not covered or subsidized by the Australian Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, so patients have to pay between AUS$5 to $15 per day out of pocket, the study reported. Almost 50% of those surveyed said the cost of legal medical weed “placed a significant strain on their finances.”

“In many respects, little has changed in the two years since cannabis was legalized for medicinal purposes in Australia: users are still largely accessing illicit cannabis, self-medicating a similar range of health conditions (chronic pain, mental health and sleep problems), with similar perceived levels of effectiveness, side effects, social and legal issues reported.” However, the study found that Australians are in support of improving the country’s regulated cannabis program, with 90% of the respondents saying that cannabis should be part of the county’s routine health care and 70% saying the government should subsidize medical cannabis.

“Until medical cannabis products are licensed as medicines with the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration), and subsidized under the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, it seems likely that the cost of unlicensed cannabis-based products will continue to force many people to source their cannabis illicitly, especially those on low incomes.”

Analysts say cannabis companies in North America, such as Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD), are likely to draw parallels between the reasons why Australians are largely sourcing medical marijuana from the black market and why the illicit marijuana market still persists in North American jurisdictions with regulated cannabis programs.

420 with CNW – Why Marijuana Employee Training is Crucial to Financial Success

Almost every job requires some kind of training. Employees need to know the basics of what they are required to do, whether it’s managing the inventory or manning the counter. For some businesses, minimal training is required and new employees can hit the ground running. But for others like cannabis sellers, who are subject to a high degree of government regulation, more comprehensive training is required.

Let’s take the example of regulated liquor stores. Without proper training, an employee might get the business in trouble for failing to check IDs and unknowingly selling alcohol to minors or even messing up the taxes. Such errors can lead to fines, suspension or even revocation of the store’s liquor license. Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level and although plenty of states have legalized cannabis, they have different guidelines on quantity, concentration, modes of administration and locations of use.

These rules will even differ from county to county, and it’s crucial for employers in the industry to train their employees properly and make sure they are familiar with their location’s weed regulations. If you have branches in different locations and intend to move an employee from one location to another, they should be up to speed on each location’s rules. When it comes to cannabis, errors can lead to some pretty ugly and expensive consequences.

Your employees will also need a good working knowledge of the products you sell, and of marijuana in general. The public will undoubtedly have questions, and employees who interact with customers should be able to respond to them accurately. The cannabis industry is fraught with plenty of unknowns and lots of false promises by firms looking to make a quick buck. Training your employees and giving them a wealth of knowledge will give your business credibility. If a customer can have any concerns regarding cannabis addressed swiftly and accurately by an employee who has a good grasp of the subject, you can be sure they’ll be back next time they need something.

Properly trained and educated employees will be more competent and will experience higher levels of job satisfaction. Numerous studies have shown that a happy employee is a productive employee. According to a study by Gallup, businesses that engaged in continual employee development saw sales increase and profits double compared to work groups that didn’t. This just goes to show that prioritizing your employees’ development isn’t an expense but a crucial and much needed investment into the business.

It is no wonder that established companies like Pure Extracts Corp. put a high premium on continually training and retraining their staff so that they are on top of their game when doing company work.

CannabisNewsAudio – Cannabis Strategic Ventures, Inc. (NUGS) Increases Harvest Size to Meet Rising Demand Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

COVID-19 has devastated most businesses but created a surge in cannabis sales—a trend that’s likely to continue.

Strange bedfellows, COVID-19 and cannabis. As the pandemic wreaked havoc on the U.S. and global economies, cannabis sales rocketed higher across multiple markets in North America. California cannabis sales soared nearly 160% compared to the same day in March 2019, while sales in Washington rocketed 100% and Colorado saw a 46% increase on the same day. This surge doesn’t appear to be a flash in the pan either. An emerging leader in the U.S. cannabis marketplace, Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS) (NUGS Profile)is now on pace for over $2.7 million in quarterly sales and approximately $11 million in annualized sales, based on its strong performance in April and May. Simultaneously, the company increased its harvest size by as much as 2.5x and is now selling product at an 11% premium to industry standard. Like any industry, the real winners in the cannabis markets are tied to sales and earnings growth. Canopy Growth Corporation (NYSE: CGC) has continued to release new products for a variety of markets while attracting significant investment from the beverage sector. Cronos Group Inc. (NASDAQ: CRON) has continued to work on expanding its international reach. With a similar focus on growth, Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NYSE: ACB) has acquired another company to expand its reach from Canada into markets in the United States. Organigram Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: OGI), whose business was initially disrupted by COVID-19, has begun a phased return to work and almost immediately announced the release of new products, making the most of continuing consumer demand.

420 with CNW – US April Marijuana Sales Remain Strong Despite Coronavirus Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a massive blow to the economy, and experts say it will take years to recover to pre-pandemic levels. State governments ordered the closure of all non-essential businesses, coupled with social distancing and self-isolation to curb the spread of the virus, but these measures wreaked havoc on the economy. Several industries have been almost been brought to a standstill as the country waits for the virus to pass, resulting in millions of job losses. However, one industry that seems to be weathering the storm is cannabis.

Many states with legal cannabis programs declared the industry essential, allowing cannabis dispensaries to continue operations amid COVID-19 related shutdowns. In some states, home deliveries and curbside deliveries were also allowed to reduce contact between staff and customers. In the weeks leading up to the shutdowns, cannabis shops reported increased sales as customers stocked up for the coming weeks they would spend in self-isolation. And, as broader retail sales fell by double digits in April, cannabis sales stayed strong. According to data from BDS Analytics, some states reported higher numbers in April than in March when demand spiked.

In April, Oregon stood out among states that have legalized marijuana. According to data from BDS Analyitcs, there was a 40% sales growth in April versus 31% in March and 19% in January. States that have regulated medical marijuana programs but do not allow recreational marijuana had even stronger gains. Sales in Maryland doubled and in Arizona they jumped nearly 50%. Nevada’s cannabis industry is more dependent on tourism than other states, and it saw a 30% drop in sales.

The 20th of April, affectionately called 4/20, is the unofficial cannabis holiday, and it has seen increased sales in previous years. This year, however, the biggest pot celebration day fell smack dab in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, and sales weren’t as great as they could have been. In Colorado and California, sales were 62% and 55% above the year-to-date average respectively compared to 148% and 135% increases in 2019. According to data from Headset Inc., overall sales in Colorado, Nevada, Washington and California fell 22% from 2019.

According to wholesale cannabis marketplace LeafLink Inc., the average share of concentrate products (commonly found in vapes) increased 30% during the week after Father’s Day last year compared to the week before. However, the products that seem to generate more demand on Father’s Day were dad-friendly products like cannabis cigars, mocktails and resins. Surprisingly, lip balms saw a 79% jump while breath strips and sublinguals’ sales increased 55%.

This is likely to be seen by sector players like Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) as further proof of the economic benefits of having a regulated marijuana market.

420 with CNW – US Report Reveals Religious Discrimination Targeting Marijuana Consumers Abroad

The U.S. State Department has released its annual Report on International Religious Freedom, and it is clear that religious discrimination against marijuana consumers is still a problem in some countries. And like it did in past years, the State Department has refrained from mentioning that due to federal prohibition, such discrimination is present in America as well. The report covers developments that took place in 2019, and it identifies about a dozen countries and territories where cannabis policies either discriminate against marijuana consumers or where they have been reformed to respect religious freedoms.

“I’m here one more time, proudly, to talk about freedom and free societies. And while America is not a perfect nation by any means, we always strive towards that more perfect union, trying to improve. We remain the greatest nation in the history of civilization,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said at a press conference on the report. Here are a few countries and territories where marijuana users are discriminated against:

The Government of the Bahamas continues to discriminate against Rastafarians “because of their dreadlocks and their religious use of marijuana,” they say. The report notes that in December, the Bahamas National Commission made a recommendation to sanction the religious use for Rastafarians but Parliament took no legal action on the recommendation by year’s end. “Rastafarians said police continued to arrest them for possessing small quantities of marijuana used in ceremonial rituals and said prison authorities cut the dreadlocks of Rastafarian prisoners,” the report says.

In Barbados, “Rastafarians expressed objections to the government’s proposed Medicinal Industry Bill, introduced in August, which would legalize marijuana for medical purposes, while remaining silent on whether other personal use, including for religious rituals, would remain prohibited.” The report notes that the attorney general said late last year that a committee “would begin discussions on the use of marijuana for sacramental purposes.”

Rastafarians in the Dominican Republic “continued to press the government for complete legalization of marijuana use, stating they considered decriminalizing to be a commercially focused half measure. Representatives of the Rastafarian community reported that authorities did not enforce the law against using marijuana when they used it in their religious sites,” the report states. Although the prime minister has pushed for decriminalizing cannabis for medical and religious use, legislation to enforce it hasn’t been enacted yet.

Guyana decriminalized low level marijuana possession, but Rastafarians argue that the ban on possessing more than 15 grams “infringed on their religious practices.” The report states that the “Guyana Rastafarian Council continued to petition the government to legalize the use of small amounts of marijuana for religious purposes, but according to the council, authorities again would not consider the proposal, stating that reviewing drug legislation remained a low priority for the government.”

It wouldn’t be surprising if cannabis companies like SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING) jokingly quipped that the U.S. federal government should first remove the log of discrimination in its own eye before writing about what is happening in other countries.
