420 with CNW – Marijuana Companies Donate PPE and Sanitizers to Healthcare Workers in COVID-19 Fight

Hand sanitizer has become one of the most precious commodities on the market right now. Three months after appearing in Wuhan, China, the Coronavirus pandemic has infected over 700,000 individuals and claimed at least 30,000 lives. Medical experts say regularly washing your hands with soap and water or sanitizer is the best way to avoid contracting the virus, alongside social distancing and self-isolation.

However, panic buying coupled with an extremely high demand for hand sanitizers and personal protection equipment (PPE) has led to a shortage. And as the number of COVID-19 patients increases, we can expect more shortages, especially as most hospitals are already trying to stretch their resources.  To help alleviate this, firms that don’t traditionally manufacture sanitizer have pledged to use their facilities to produce free hand sanitizer, and the cannabis industry hasn’t been left behind.

Cannabis was recently categorized as an essential service, and numerous state governments have taken steps to ensure cannabis businesses remain operational during the lockdown. These include online purchasing, home deliveries, and curbside pickups. A few marijuana companies have decided to donate resources to help in the fight against the Coronavirus.

Glass House Group uses PPE gowns in its cultivation facilities for pest control, and the firm donated 1,000 PPE gowns to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Glass House Group also runs a dispensary, the Farmacy in Santa Barbara, which started a Food Bank give back program to ensure kids receive a healthy lunch. On top of that, the company will provide two weeks of paid sick leave for any employee who is infected with the virus.

Santa Rosa, California based firm CannaCraft is using ethanol from cannabis extraction to create a hand sanitizer formulation. According to Tiffany Devitt, President of Wellness, the company had several thousand pump bottles that couldn’t be used due to a change in regulations.

“With the combination of the ingredients, our large scale manufacturing equipment, and our team of in-house chemists, we were ready to start making a lot of hand sanitizer within days of learning about the shortage around the country.” The firm had 25,000 bottles slated for distribution, and its goal is to make 100,000 bottles of hand sanitizer with their next order.

Canopy Growth, on the other hand, has donated health equipment like gloves, face masks and bodysuits to local hospitals in Canada. “We committed our personal protective equipment from our recently shuttered B.C sites to the frontline staff at a local health unit in Victoria,” said spokeswoman Jordan Sinclair.

Analysts say the cannabis companies mentioned in the discussion above are just a tiny fraction of the industry and they believe that all sector players, including Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD), are doing everything that they can to help in the fight against this pandemic that has brought the world to a near-standstill.

420 with CNW – Senate Housing Bill Proposes Protections for Marijuana Extractors

Marijuana has been illegal at the federal level for quite a while. It is the world’s most used drug, and over the years, a lot of people have found themselves facing marijuana-related charges. However, more and more states have legalized marijuana in various capacities, and this throws into question how to treat people with marijuana-related convictions.

Some are of the opinion that their records should be expunged and that individuals currently serving time for marijuana-related convictions have their rulings overturned. Most legal marijuana programs use part of the tax revenue from sales to address this, but there’s still a long way to go. Still, there’s a lot of stigma, even in states that have legalized marijuana. This has been especially felt in the insurance and banking sectors, although things are definitely better now.

Recently, Sen. Jeff Merkley filed a Congressional bill with a provision that would prevent landlords from evicting people over manufacturing marijuana extracts if they have a valid license. The legislation contains a list of ‘just causes for eviction’ which includes the ‘manufacture of a cannabinoid extract unless the tenant holds a license to manufacture the cannabinoid extract under federal, state or tribal law.

This is where things get a little confusing, though, as cannabis is still considered illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. The bill contains a provision that states that ‘the unlawful manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance’ is grounds for eviction but it does not exempt state-legal activity, such as cannabinoid extractors with valid licenses.

Due to the discrepancy in state and federal law, cannabis-related cases might be handled quite differently. Most eviction cases, however, are handled at the state level, so some courts might defer to state law in favor of licensed cannabinoid extractors instead of federal laws.

The provision for cannabinoid extractors is part of a housing bill designed to “address the shortcomings of our current housing policies and funding levels by holistically addressing disparities and systematic obstacles and ensuring an equitable outcome for the most vulnerable American.”

It comes a year after Reps Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Kamala Harris filed a housing bill that would protect people with low-level drug convictions from being denied access to or being evicted from public housing. She said in a statement that “denial of basic necessities to formerly incarcerated people does not make our communities safer,” adding that the bill is one of the many steps that need to be taken to repair our broken criminal justice system.

Experts don’t think that industry actors like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) are excited by this bill since previous proposed legislation along the same lines hasn’t registered success, especially in the Senate.

420 with CNW – Allow Patients to Grow Their Own Medical Marijuana, N.J. Advocates Say

2020 has so far been anything but easy. The year began as the Coronavirus tore through Asia, and in three months it has spread to all continents except Antarctica, infected over 700,000 people worldwide and left at least 40,000 dead. Most of us have never seen anything like this, and experts say that the virus may affect up to 70% of the world’s population before it runs its course.

Naturally, state and national governments have taken steps to curb the spread of the virus. Since it is transmitted through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, social distancing and self-isolation work best. People have been encouraged to stay indoors and only leave when they absolutely have to. All but the most essential businesses have also been ordered to shut down for the meantime as the world grapples with the pandemic.

However, several states have recognized that marijuana is essential, and have taken steps to ensure medical marijuana patients still get their medicine. These include online purchases, home deliveries and curbside pickups.

On Wednesday, the NJ Cannabis Insider hosted a webinar, and three of the state’s well-known cannabis industry leaders discussed the current situation and how to cater to medical marijuana patients. One of the ideas was allowing patients to grow their own medical marijuana, and how it would benefit them in these trying times.

The state’s original medical marijuana law has a provision letting patients grow up to six plants at home, but it was removed to improve the legislation’s chances at the ballot. Industry leaders say such a provision would now be a great help to medical marijuana patients.

“I talk to a lot of folks in the industry. A lot of people think that the industry is fighting this. I have not heard one credible source in the cannabis industry that is opposed,” says Bill Caruso, a founding member of New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform.

He states that the reservations elected officials have about home cultivation are valid due to the prospect of rogue growers feeding the black market with unregulated products. “But if we’re talking about allowing a patient to grow their own strain or something of that effect, I do think that there is an appetite for that.”

Jackie Cornell, Chief of Policy and Health Innovation for 1906, an edibles company, suggests that advocates needed to keep ‘the constant drumbeat of the patients’ needs and patients’ rights.’

“With everybody stuck at home, it’s a great opportunity for reaching out to your Senator, to your Assemblymember, to your mayor and your elected officials.”

It would be interesting to hear what industry players like Round Meadow Holdings Corp. and Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) have to say about this tricky scenario of tweaking marijuana policy in a way that wasn’t included in the enabling law.

420 with CNW – Survey Shows Most Americans Want Medical Marijuana Dispensaries to Stay Open

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has put the world in a position it hasn’t been in since the 1918 Spanish flu. It first appeared in Wuhan, China, and quickly spread through Asia, Europe, the Americas and to Africa. Over 700,000 cases of the virus have been confirmed, and it has left at least 30,000 individuals dead in its wake.

Governments have been scrambling to contain the virus before it gets worse by implementing a variety of measures. Social distancing and self-isolation are by far the most important as it is transmitted through water droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. And to ensure people stayed home unless they had to get something essential, say water or medicine, all but the most essential businesses were ordered closed.

These include supermarkets, drug dispensaries, gas stations, and banks and in many states where it was already legal, marijuana. As state governments issued lockdown directives, most people bought supplies in bulk to prepare for a long period of self-isolation and social distancing. During this period, medical and recreational cannabis dispensaries recorded a sharp spike in sales.

More and more people consider marijuana an essential, either for its medical properties or to reduce anxiety during this highly stressful period. After surveying 5,400 U.S. adults online this week to see their opinions on medical marijuana, YouGov found that a large portion of them consider it an essential service.

56% said medical marijuana dispensaries should be considered essential services, 26% did not and 21% said they didn’t know. 62% of Democrats said medical marijuana was essential while 19% did not think so. On the other hand, 43% of Republicans said it was essential while 39% didn’t think so. 52% of Independents thought medical marijuana dispensaries should remain open.

States like New Jersey, Colorado, Michigan, and Illinois have deemed medical marijuana essential, and have taken steps to ensure patients and employees are safe. This includes encouraging online purchases, curbside pickups and in a few cases, home delivery. Not only does this reduce physical contact and the physical handling of money, but it also provides an essential medicine to a vulnerable group.

A large percentage of medical marijuana patients are seniors who are immunocompromised, and some dispensaries have even set aside times where they exclusively serve senior citizens. David Knowlton runs a marijuana cultivation facility with an attached dispensary in New Jersey, and he wasn’t shocked when his business was deemed an essential one.

“Access to medical cannabis is as important as access to any other needed medication. There is nothing in the current crisis that would mitigate that need or the appropriateness of that use.”

The survey results indicating that Americans see marijuana as an essential commodity is likely to be welcomed by sector-related companies like MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) since such results show that there is a shift in the way society perceives marijuana.

Youngevity International (NASDAQ: YGYI), a leading multi-channel lifestyle company operating in three distinct business segments including a commercial coffee enterprise, commercial hemp enterprise and multi-channel lifestyle company, today provided an update on the impact of the COVID-19 virus on its operations. According to the update, all of Youngevity’s three reporting segments have been able to continue operations, as each falls into the category of an essential business.  Although Youngevity continues to generate revenue in all segments, it has experienced difficulty in meeting its filing deadline for its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2019, due to displacement of its non-essential personnel in various offices in the U.S. and around the world caused by the global outbreak. This displacement, including substantially all accounting staff, restrictions imposed by various governments, and displacement of its auditors’ staff, among other areas of impact, has slowed down the financial reporting and audit process causing the company to miss the filing date of its 10-K. “We are complying with all government initiatives and recommendations and our company is pro-actively taking the health and safety of our employees very seriously by implementing smart-work initiatives by encouraging, when and where possible, work from home options,” Youngevity International Chairman and CEO Steve Wallach stated in the news release. “These factors, in spite of a huge effort by the accounting and finance team, has made it impossible to meet our financial reporting deadline. We feel fortunate that our operations are able to generate revenue in all segments.”

420 with CNW – Arizona 2020 Marijuana Legalization Plans Still on Course Despite Coronavirus

Three months after the Coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China, it has infected over 700,000 people and left at least 30,000 dead in its wake. The world hasn’t faced anything like this since the Second World War, and governments everywhere are struggling with containment efforts. All non-essential businesses are shut down, and people are advised to stay indoors unless it’s absolutely necessary to head out.

However, while the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdowns on the economy is catastrophic, they aren’t limited to the economy. One area that has taken a particularly hard hit is drug policy reform efforts across the country, including marijuana. In an environment where close contact with another person is likely to give you a life-threatening disease, collecting signatures doesn’t seem very smart.

Activists have asked officials to allow digital signature gathering to allow petitions to be signed online. Arizona marijuana activists, however, don’t have to worry about that after it was revealed that they have more than enough signatures to put marijuana legalization policies on the state ballot. According to The Smart and Safe Arizona, its campaign to legalize cannabis for adult use collected more than 320,000 signatures which are about 80,000 more than is required.

“We’re confident that we’re over the number that we need. We got started collecting signatures on Labor Day last year so we’re in a position where not much has changed. We were significantly ahead of where we planned to be for signatures, and we have until July 2 to continue to gather,” said Campaign Manager Stacy Pearson.

With enough signatures, the state is on track to put recreational marijuana legalization to the 2020 ballot. The initiative would permit individuals 21 and older to buy up to one ounce of cannabis from licensed retailers. They will also be allowed to plant up to six marijuana plants for personal use. Under the measure, marijuana will be taxed 16% and the revenue will be used to fund community colleges, infrastructure, justice reinvestment, and public services.

It also contains several restorative justice provisions including allowing individuals with prior marijuana convictions to petition the courts to expunge their records and establishing a social equity program. The Department of Health Services would be in charge of running the recreational marijuana program and issuing cannabis business licenses.

“We know that voters in Arizona want a taxed, tested, regulated market for legalized marijuana,” says Pearson.

This is one piece of good news that the cannabis industry, including ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX), is likely to welcome at this time when the sector is facing unprecedented difficulties triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak.
