420 with CNW – Three Studies Give Further Proof of Marijuana’s Effect on Opioid Crisis

A trio of scientific studies has provided further proof that legalizing marijuana can reduce the opioid crisis facing America. At first glance, it may appear that legalizing marijuana will increase opioid overdoses. However, the studies conducted gathered data that proves otherwise.

  1. Arthritis Sufferers Who Underwent Reconstructive Surgery Used Fewer Opioids if Cannabis Was Accessible

A new study whose findings appeared in the Journal of Orthopedic Proceedings analyzed the toxicological tests of more than 520 patients. The tests in question were conducted between 2012 and 2017.

The researchers found that patients who used cannabis before undergoing reconstructive surgery to repair joints affected by arthritis increased from just 9 percent to 15 percent during the period being studied. At the same time, the prevalence of opioid use dropped to 17 percent from 24 percent.

There appears to be a correlation between the increase in access to marijuana and a reduction in the use of opioids.

  1. States with Legal Marijuana Have Fewer Opioid Prescriptions

Another group of researchers gathered data on more than 1.3 billion prescriptions of opioids. Those prescriptions were spread over several years from 2011 to 2018. The researchers analyzed that data in order to establish whether there was a connected between marijuana laws and the rate at which opioids are prescribed.

The investigators found that in states where marijuana was fully legal (for recreational and medical purposes) prescriptions for opioids, especially morphine, reduced by 6.9 percent every year.

The study found that in the states where only medical marijuana was legal, morphine prescriptions reduced by 6.1 percent each year.

The researchers concluded that access to cannabis caused the rate at which morphine is prescribed to reduce by a percentage which is statistically significant.

  1. Opioid Abuse Decreased as Cannabis Use Went Up

The federally funded National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted in 2017 compared the level of opioid misuse among Americans in 2016 and 2017. The researchers found that about 11.4 million Americans abused opioids in 2017 yet the number was higher (11.8 million) the year before.

The same survey found that the number of Americans who used marijuana in 2016 was 24 million while those who used cannabis the next year increased to 26 million. This increase in cannabis use could possibly explain why opioid abuse reduced in the years under scrutiny.

As you can see, studies conducted by private entities and those funded by states or the federal government all seem to point to the strong possibility of marijuana having the key to the opioid epidemic the country is facing. Such findings are good news to industry players like Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP).

Cannabis Ignores Wider Stock Market, Follows Its Own Path

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: Following a tumultuous month, cannabis continues to carve its own path rather than following the lead of other stocks.

  • As the stock market plummeted earlier this month, cannabis companies stayed strong, buoyed up by legislative changes in Canada.
  • The cannabis market appears set for continuing growth as it expands into expected sales worth billions of dollars across North America.
  • While it still faces regulatory challenges in some locations, this market sector is preparing for corporate big players to move in.

Companies with varied interests are moving into the cannabis sector, such as lifestyle business Youngevity International, Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) (YGYI Profile). While the stocks of some cannabis players such as Tilray, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY) appear overvalued, this reflects problems with valuation tools more than the stocks themselves. The sector has developed its own heavy hitters, such as Canopy Growth Corp. (NYSE: CGC) (TSX: WEED), whose millions of square feet of growing space are now leading to sales into the United States as well as Canada. Some companies are focused only on medical products, such as GW Pharmaceuticals Plc (NASDAQ: GWPH) with its cannabis-based prescription medicines. But it’s the recreational side of the cannabis space that has drawn in Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ), a huge beverage maker that has invested $4 billion in a cannabis cultivator.

Cannabis Stocks Versus the Market

It’s been an interesting month for cannabis stocks.

Three weeks ago, cannabis looked like a particularly strong bet. As the wider stock market fell, cannabis stayed strong. Some cannabis stocks even saw significant rises in value amid promising developments from those companies. Legalization in Canada undoubtedly played a part in their success, with the run-up to Oct. 17 seeing predictions of massive profits for cannabis companies. But some commentators argued that it was part of a bigger trend in which cannabis stocks are among those that don’t follow other market indicators.

Then came the week following legalization and a notable fall in the value of cannabis shares. The hype around these companies was punctured by market shifts. Had they fallen in line with the rest of the market? Was the reality of Canadian legalization catching up with the imagined utopia? Or was this simply a downturn for a sector trending separately from competitors?

More to the Market

To understand shifts in cannabis shares, one needs to take a look at the state of the industry.

The cannabis industry isn’t self-contained. The spread of legalization and the emergence of derivative products has created a diverse sector combining exciting startups with older companies dipping their toes in a novel market. Alongside the pure-play cannabis brands, there are pharmaceutical businesses and even lifestyle companies such as Youngevity International, Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI).

These companies are selling three distinct products.

First, there’s medical cannabis. Supplied on prescription to deal with pain and nausea, cannabis’ medical properties remain hotly debated but that hasn’t stopped the state-legalized use of it from spreading across more than half of the United States.

In material terms, recreational cannabis has exactly the same chemical makeup as some of the medicinal products. What’s primarily different is the way that it’s marketed, sold and used. This is cannabis used for fun and relaxation. It’s now available by law in nine U.S. states and Canada.

Then there are the derivative products. Most, including those sold by Youngevity, use cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabidiol is an active ingredient that doesn’t get users high. CBD can be extracted from cannabis, both from the marijuana plant as well as its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-free variety known as industrial hemp. Research into CBD is still in its infancy, but it is already used in a wide range of health and wellness products.

Over the past 20 years, cannabis has grown from a black market drug to a major public market product in North America, with growing influence in the rest of the world. From the first stirrings of a medical market to the current state of affairs in which a G8 country has a recreational market and the White House is hinting at U.S. reforms, it’s been a fast ride. As a result, there’s still a lot of uncertainty about cannabis’ destiny.

Where Now for Cannabis Shares?

The idea that weed doesn’t correlate to other stocks seems to have some truth. This was shown by the events of early to mid-October, when legal reform and individual brand announcements set it on an opposite trend from other shares. While the Dow has headed towards its worst month since May 2010, cannabis stocks have carved their own path. It looked like good news for companies such as Youngevity.

For now, cannabis is offering a real challenge for traders. Cannabis stocks look overvalued based on traditional valuation metrics such as price-to-book ratio, price-to-earnings ratio or price-to-sales ratio. But these metrics are based on past results, not future valuations. Given ongoing changes, the future performance of cannabis companies will be nothing like the past. Whole new customer bases are opening up, bringing staggering potential for growth.

In the next month, there will be votes on whether to allow recreational cannabis in North Dakota and Michigan, at least one of which is likely to pass. North of the border, Canada is planning to legalize cannabis-infused edibles next year. That means a whole new sector of profit opportunities.

Then there’s the impending arrival of big players in the market. Big pharmaceutical and consumables companies haven’t paid much attention to cannabis yet, as its value is relatively low compared with their existing revenues. But with the market expanding, both groups may get involved — beverage and tobacco companies pursuing a natural spin-off from their existing businesses and big pharma in pursuit of new medicines. Those are moves that will bring disruption unrelated to wider markets.

As a lifestyle brand selling both coffee and cannabis derivatives, Youngevity has already placed itself to enter this cross-over market. And with its new HempFX™ line now available online, it’s moving fast to profit from changes in the cannabis market.

Riding High

Alongside medical and recreational marijuana, CBD is seeing huge growth. Youngevity CEO Steve Wallach has spoken about the huge potential of CBD products in direct sales channels, not just in America but around the world. His company is riding high on this trend with the announcement of new CBD products.

Youngevity’s first offering in the CB market is the HempFX™ product line, a trio of three different hemp-derived cannabidiol oil products that contain organically grown products in proprietary formulas designed for a variety of everyday use.

The products include Soothe™, a blend of botanicals designed to relieve muscles by calming aches and pains; Uplift™, which combines CBD with St. John’s Wort to improve cognitive performance and mood; and Relax™, which combines CBD with a variety of herbs and melatonin to bring relaxation and a better night’s sleep.

Cannabis’ Long-Term Prospects

The signs remain good for cannabis companies. One study predicts that sales in Canada could reach $7.1 billion in 2019, $4.3 billion of that coming from the recreational market.

The boss of cannabis company Tilray, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY) believes that the market in the United States will soon be worth $150 billion. A leading player in the medical cannabis market, Tilray has established agreements with Canadian partners that will let it profit from changes in that country, changes that could radically improve its earnings.

Other companies are also making significant movements in the market. Drinks giant Constellation Brands, Inc. (NYSE: STZ) has invested $4 billion in Canopy Growth Corp. (NYSE: CGC) (TSX: WEED), showing that it is serious about moving into the cannabis market. Canopy Growth is one of Canada’s largest cannabis companies, with 5.6 million square feet of growing space. Like Tilray, it’s looking at the wider North American picture and carried out a legal transfer of cannabis to the United States, the first such transfer with a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-issued permit.

Canopy Growth’s strong performance has drawn the attention of companies outside the cannabis sector, leading to the headline-making investment from Constellation Brands earlier this year. Many commentators have talked about this as a chance for Constellation to produce cannabis-infused beverages, a largely untapped market likely to take off once new rules come in Canada next year. But it may represent a broader play, as alcohol and tobacco companies aim to take control of cannabis and fill the gaps as sales of their existing lines fall.

Some companies are focused only on the medical market. GW Pharmaceuticals Plc (NASDAQ: GWPH) has created the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cannabis-based prescription medicine as part of its substantial research and design program. Even as the recreational market and CBD steal its thunder, the medical market remains strong.

Clearly, there are still big uncertainties for the cannabis market. Questions about regulation and how far legalization will spread hang over everybody’s heads. Yet companies are thriving despite this, showing the rewards that so often come with risk and innovation.

420 with CNW – Latest Gallup Poll Shows that More Americans Want Marijuana Legalized

It has been repeated time and again how polarized Americans are in recent times, but there is one thing upon there seems to be agreement among the young and old, Democrats and Republicans, that is, the issue of cannabis legalization.

A Gallup poll that was conducted recently reveals that two out of every three voters you count thinks that marijuana prohibition should come to an end.

The most significant groups to have registered a rise in support for decriminalization are the older Americans and Republicans. These groups were the least likely to favor legalization in past polls.

Support for legalization has reached record high this year ever since Gallup started conducting these polls in 1969. In that maiden year of polling, Gallup found that just 12 percent of the adults who participated in the poll expressed support for marijuana legalization. This year’s 66 percent support for legalization marks a huge shift in public perception about this plant which has for long been shrouded in controversy and polarization.

The poll also found that five out of ten Republicans say marijuana should be legalized. This view is in sharp contrast to the opinion of the top brass of the party, with the Attorney General vehemently opposed to any degree of cannabis legalization and the party didn’t even mention marijuana during its campaigns in 2016.

Democrats showed the highest support for legalization as nearly eight out of ten voters expressed a desire to see marijuana prohibition end. Similar support was found among independents as seven out of ten were in favor of the legalization of marijuana.

Support for marijuana legalization is massive among younger Americans (those who are 34 years or younger). Eight out of ten in this age group support decriminalization.

The variations by region are also melting away on the matter of cannabis decriminalization. Previously, the East had significantly lower support for marijuana legalization when compared to the West. The recent poll showed that the support now varies by just a single percentage point, with all regions hovering at about 66 percent in support.

This clear support recorded by pollsters is given credence when one considers the different states where cannabis legalization has been presented to voters. Ballot measures have succeeded in all states where the matter was up for a vote. This is a clear signal that legislators at both state and federal level should revise their position and make decisions that are in line with the wishes of the majority in the nation.

One can only imagine that cannabis industry players like Global Payout, Inc. (OTC: GOHE) and Golden Developing Solutions, Inc. (OTC: DVLP) must be pleased that the public is rallying behind this plant that has so much to offer.

420 with CNW – Study Shows that Marijuana Ingredient Lowers Public Speaking Anxiety

A randomized, double-blind study in Brazil has found that individuals who suffer from public speaking anxiety can be helped by consuming cannabidiol (CBD). The findings of this study were released in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry.

Some 57 participants were recruited to take part in this study. These participants were divided into four groups with each group being given a placebo, 150mg, 300mg or 600mg of cannabidiol (CBD).

The researchers asked the participants to watch a short video and then prepare a four-minute speech based on the material in that video.

Those participants were then asked to self-assess on the anxiety levels before, during and after making that speech. The known bio-markers that are affected by public speaking anxiety, such as blood pressure, heart rate and sweating were monitored during those different stages of the presentation.

Previous studies on this same issue had suggested that CBD can mitigate public speaking anxiety depending on the dose given to the individual. The Brazilian research had similar findings.

The results revealed an inverted U when the impact of CBD on anxiety was assessed. The inverted U means that little effect was registered at lower CBD doses and the impact kept increasing until a certain point when higher doses of CBD showed a reducing effect on the “stage fright” experienced by the participants before, during and after the speech.

Specifically speaking, the group which received 150mg of CBD didn’t have any different anxiety markers from the placebo group. Similarly, those who got the higher dose of 600mg of CBD also barely differed from the placebo group.

These results show that additional studies need to be carried out to ascertain the specific “sweet spot” that provides the best effects to those who find it hard to stand before a group and express themselves coherently.

These research findings provide additional avenues through which marijuana can be harnessed to address the different challenges that people face in their day to day lives. Such research also calls for an urgent review of the scheduling of marijuana in many jurisdictions, including at the federal level in the U.S. where the plant is considered as something which doesn’t have any medical value. This categorization makes it hard for researchers to access funding to study this plant, and humanity has lost out on endless benefits during this prohibitionist period.

All isn’t lost, however, as the public is taking matters into its own hands and compelling different states to legalize marijuana through ballot measures. Cannabis companies like Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTC: GRYN) and GreenBox POS, LLC (OTC: GRBX) can only wait for that time when prohibition will be ended once and for all at the federal level.

420 with CNW – Lithuania Joins List of EU Nations Where Medical Cannabis is Legal

The parliament of Lithuania has passed a law that will make it possible for patients who want to be treated with marijuana to get such treatment. This new law will become operational on May 1, 2019. An overwhelming majority (nearly unanimous) of legislators voted in for this law. No legislator voted against the proposal while one lawmaker abstained.

Any company intending to sell medical cannabis once the new law takes effect will need to get a license from the relevant regulator in the country.

The passing of the law which legalized medical cannabis necessitated that some existing laws, such as the law on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, be amended to take into account the legalization of medical marijuana.

One of the provisions of the narcotics law regarded marijuana as having no medicinal use. Such a provision would have been inconsistent with the new law which regarded cannabis as a form of medicine.

The law legalizing medical cannabis has some strict requirements for any cannabis product that manufacturers want to use to treat patients. For example, scientific research will have to be conducted to prove that a given product has a medicinal effect upon the condition for which such a product can be used.

The medicines control agency of the country will be responsible for issuing permits for any clinical trials that need to be conducted.

Aurora Cannabis, one of the leading marijuana companies in Canada, already has a presence in the country. This was after the Canadian company acquired Agropro UAB in September this year.

Agropro had for long occupied the position of the largest firm involved in the production, processing and supply of organic hemp products in Europe.

Registered cannabis products will be used to treat oncological patients in Lithuania. Qualifying conditions will include HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, severe epilepsy and other chronic conditions.

Other EU jurisdictions which have recently legalized medical cannabis include the UK which passed the relevant law and implementation is scheduled to start just weeks after that law was passed. This is contrary to what happens in other jurisdictions where several months or even years have to elapse before implementation starts. The delays are usually necessitated by the need to set up regulatory systems and process applications for businesses that want to be involved in the industry.

Lithuania is taking it slow and giving itself more than half a year before patients can access medical marijuana. Cannabis companies around the world, such as Earth Science Tech, Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) and FinCanna Capital Corp. (CSE: CALI) (OTCQB: FNNZF) are certainly happy that more jurisdictions around the world are opening up to the medical benefits that cannabis can offer those in need.

420 with CNW – Research Finds That Cannabis Helps Crohn’s Disease Sufferers

A team of Israeli researchers has confirmed that cannabis oil can improve the symptoms caused by Crohn’s disease. The researchers made their findings public at the 2018 UEG Week (United European Gastroenterology) that has just ended in Vienna. The event was held from October 20-24.

The lead researcher of the randomized, placebo-controlled study was Dr. Timna Naftali. He revealed at the UEG Week that their study was the very first to investigate the impact of cannabis on Crohn’s disease.

The researchers studied 46 individuals who were divided into two groups during the study. One group was given cannabis oil while the second group was given a placebo. After 8 weeks, the researchers found that 65 percent of the patients who received the cannabis oil had clinical remission of their symptoms while only 35 percent of those who got the placebo had a remission.

The scientists used tools that were standard practice for monitoring and recording how the clinical symptoms were responding during the trial period. Gut inflammation was monitored using endoscopy. Stool and blood samples were also tested for inflammatory markers during the study.

The researchers were surprised to discover that inflammation in the gut of the study participants didn’t change despite an improvement in the symptoms suffered by the individuals.

This finding disproved the long-held belief that patients improved because cannabis combated the inflammation in their gastrointestinal tract. The cannabis oil used in the study contained 15 percent CBD and 4 percent THC.

The researchers concluded that cannabis oil can now start being used as a therapy to temporarily provide relief from Crohn’s disease symptoms since it doesn’t cure the condition. Cannabis oil may be used alongside or as an alternative to the current Crohn’s disease management therapies.

The Israeli researchers plan to conduct other studies on how cannabis can be used to treat bowel inflammatory disease and other GIT diseases.

It should be remembered that the World Health Organization (WHO) is going to hold an expert meeting in November to review the classification of marijuana. The U.S. FDA also called for public comments about cannabis (its medicinal value, addiction and harm potential etc.). The findings coming in from Israel can help boost the body of evidence presented to make the case for de-scheduling marijuana as a substance which doesn’t have any therapeutic use. Several countries around the world, including Canada, Lithuania, the UK, Australia, Germany, Denmark and dozens more have legalized medical cannabis.

That list of countries should provide ample proof that cannabis has medicinal effects for a variety of conditions since each country which legalizes cannabis for medical purposes creates a list of qualifying health conditions for which patients can get a prescription or card allowing them to obtain cannabis or its products.

Cannabis industry players like ChineseInvestors.com (OTCQB: CIIX) and Choom Holdings Inc. (CSE: CHOO) (OTCQB: CHOOF) must be wondering why it has taken so long for all countries to recognize the nearly endless benefits of cannabis.

420 with CNW – California Proposes Tough Changes to Marijuana Regulations

The Bureau of Cannabis Control, together with the Department of Public Health and the Department of Food and Agriculture in California have released an updated draft set of rules that will form the permanent regulations which will govern the cannabis industry in the state.

The public has been invited to provide its input to that draft so that the regulators can finalize the document in early December. Public comments will be received until November 5.

Experts say the draft contains a number of “bombs” that will have a major impact on the way the industry operates.

For example, the draft set of permanent rules seeks to prevent third party entities from participating in the delivery of cannabis to consumers or retailers/distributors. Only third parties that have a cannabis license may get involved in the distribution of marijuana.

That measure would affect technological platforms which had come up to generate revenues from cannabis distribution. The draft regulations allow tech platform to facilitate the distribution as long as those platforms don’t earn from such an undertaking. This seems logical, since those tech platforms don’t have a marijuana license issued by the State of California.

Secondly, the draft rules seek to lower the quantity of cannabis that a delivery vehicle may transport during a single trip. Previously, delivery vehicles were allowed to carry cannabis or cannabis products worth a maximum of $10,000. That limit may now drop to $5,000 if that provision stays as it is in the draft rules.

Furthermore, at least $2,000-worth of cannabis from the $5,000 value loaded onto a delivery vehicle has to be for orders that have already been made. This provision may be intended to curb the practice of delivery vans moving with excess products in the hope that additional buyers will show up where the vehicle has gone to take products.

The third major change being introduced in the draft of permanent rules is the requirement for cannabis businesses to disclose everyone who has a stake in those businesses. The regulators want to know everyone who stands to benefit from the industry, so silent partners will become a thing of the past in the marijuana industry.

On a brighter note, the updated draft intends to reduce the stringent test requirements that previously resulted in many products failing those tests and being recalled from the market. This provision seems to be in response to a cry from the industry regarding the current testing protocols.

Additionally, licensed marijuana events will also no longer be restricted to county fairgrounds. This paves the way for a variety of cannabis events to crop up within the state as the years go by.

The updated draft rules seem to have been informed by the different situations on the ground as the industry evolves. Some areas have been tightened while other regulatory areas have seen restrictions eased somewhat. It remains to be seen what marijuana companies like Cannabis Strategic Ventures, Inc. (OTC: NUGS) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) make of those draft permanent regulations.

420 with CNW – Canada Hit by Shortages after Cannabis Legalization

As had been predicted by analysts, supplies of recreational marijuana could not meet the massive demand for the product even for the first day when retail outlets opened. The shortages did not discriminate between online stores and brick and mortar outlets since both were equally hit.

Long queues could be seen outside the retail stores as clients waited to enter the premises and buy cannabis to celebrate legalization day.

However, many people were turned away as the stores sold out everything that they had stocked ahead of the opening day. It isn’t known how quickly these shortages will be resolved.

One store owner remarked about how ironical it was that his establishment went dry at exactly 4:20. Of all times!

Even those lucky customers who entered the stores while some products were still available were unhappy that they could not have their choice of cannabis products since only a small range was available by the time those clients got in.

Marijuana retailers are unhappy that they let down lots of their customers on such an important day. The ideal situation would have been to avail more than customers need so that a pattern is established that clients will always have their pick of cannabis products at their preferred retail store.

People who tried to buy their products online complained that the sites crashed frequently, products were sold out or other glitches prevented the online platforms from working well.

Three major points need to be noted about what is unfolding after the legalization of recreational cannabis.

First, existing and new producers need to ramp up their production so that such shortages don’t plague the industry for longer than is unavoidable. It is hard to comprehend how businesses can fail to plan for such a huge demand which any layperson could have predicted.

Secondly, such shortages can have an adverse effect on the stocks of cannabis companies since the market always responds to the prevailing sentiments. Consumers aren’t happy, and that may hurt stock prices.

Third, shortages are bad because they provide an unconscious justification for the black market. If someone wants a product badly enough, they will reach a point where any supplier will do, including the black market which has honed its logistical systems over the years. The black market isn’t good for consumers (product quality issues, for example), it isn’t good for legal cannabis businesses (lost customers and revenue) and it isn’t good for the government (lost taxes, public health issues, law enforcement headaches, etc.).

Youngevity International, Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and American Premium Water Corp. (OTC: HIPH) must be longing for the chance to operate in such a market where demand is so high that every product made will be assured of a buyer

Flow of Finance Funds Acquisitions and Investment Across the Cannabis Sector

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: A growing market is supporting a wave of acquisitions and cross-company investments in the cannabis industry.

  • Significant growth in the cannabis industry is supporting a range of multimillion-dollar investments.
  • Some of these have taken the form of acquisitions, as innovators evolve into established companies.
  • Others are cross-company investments, some within the sector and some from outside.
  • Profits are coming not just from cannabis itself but from support services, with companies profiting from pick-and-shovel plays.

One of the companies making a pick-and-shovel play is Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) (SGMD Profile), which is expanding its position in cultivation supplies through acquisitions and marketing agreements. GW Pharmaceuticals Plc (NASDAQ: GWPH) recently carried out a public offering to fund further growth, raising $345 million to expand its cannabis-oriented pharmaceuticals work. AbbVie, Inc. (NYSE: ABBV), on the other hand, has retained only a limited connection to cannabis, moving instead into other treatments. Specialist consulting company MariMed, Inc. (OTCQB: MRMD) provides advice for those looking to expand in the sector, covering the development and management of cultivation facilities, and recently investing in a related software company. For Medmen Enterprises, Inc. (OTCQX: MMNFF) (CSE: MMEN), expansion means a vertically integrated supply chain across four US states as it expands a carefully developed brand.

Cannabis Acquisitions Continue as Companies Seek Liquidity

With the completion of cannabis legalization in Canada, investors are watching closely to see what effect this will have on the market. Over less than 20 years, cannabis has evolved from nothing into a multimillion-dollar industry, with companies ranging from cultivators and retailers to payment specialists and equipment suppliers. As it continues to expand at a rapid rate in both Canada and the US, the market is seeing growth for players both big and small.

To fuel this development, many companies are looking for fresh finance. Liquidity is needed to fund research, development, and expansion, from building larger cultivation facilities to setting up new retail outlets. This is both driven by and driving a wave of new finance deals and acquisitions, as the sector matures and consolidates its resources.

Acquiring the Fundamentals

The appeal of acquisitions is driving the strategy of companies such as hydroponics supplier Sugarmade, Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD). Hydroponic equipment is essential to the indoor cultivation of cannabis, so the growth of the sector promises a boom in demand for hydroponics. Sugarmade is using this boom to attract additional finance and undertake a raft of acquisitions, with an end goal of becoming a major player not just in hydroponics but in the cannabis space itself.

Such acquisitions have taken off in a big way over the past year. The first half of 2018 saw 145 mergers and acquisitions in the cannabis sector, nearly double the number for the same period in 2017. Some of these represent consolidation by existing cannabis players, as they mature from innovative startups into established businesses in a widely accepted field. But money is also coming in from the outside, for example through Constellation Brands’ acquisition of a large portion of Canopy Growth.

A pattern is emerging of cannabis-adjacent companies moving directly into the sector. For a company such as Constellation, the move is a sideways one from investment in alcohol to one in cannabis, protecting its place in the recreational consumables market. It’s the same play that other alcohol and tobacco companies are eyeing. For Sugarmade, acquisitions represent expansion within its existing business, ensuring a firm hold on hydroponics, as well as a move up and down the supply chain to better profit from the businesses it is already tied to.

A Pick-and-Shovel Strategy

Earlier this year, Sugarmade announced that it was moving to acquire two other suppliers of cultivation equipment. Now details of those deals are emerging, with the signing of a binding Letter of Intent (“LOI”) to acquire Sky Unlimited, LLC. This could allow Sugarmade to expand its distribution channels, thanks to the different models followed by the two companies. While Sugarmade’s sales to the cannabis sector primarily come through online buyers, Sky Unlimited specializes in selling to wholesalers and large commercial cultivators. Combining the two may create manufacturing, logistical, and marketing efficiencies across an expanded customer base.

“The trend in cannabis cultivation is toward the larger commercial cultivation operations, and Sky Unlimited is in the thick of that dynamic marketplace,” said Jimmy Chan, CEO of Sugarmade. “This year, Sky Unlimited and its associated operations are expected to produce in excess of $40 million in revenues with profitability and positive cash flow. This new revenue stream combined with our recently upwardly guided revenue forecast of $30 million for next year will make Sugarmade one of the largest publicly traded suppliers to the booming cannabis cultivation marketplace, with a combined revenue forecast for next year in excess of $70 million.”

The types of company being targeted by Sugarmade reveal a pick-and-shovel strategy. Rather than making a direct jump into cannabis, the company is investing in the underlying products and services cannabis suppliers need. It’s a more conservative move than investing directly in cannabis, one that will buffer Sugarmade against the immediate effects of a fast-changing and still controversial sector, while letting it profit from the sector’s growth.

Following a previous Master Marketing Agreement with BizRight, this latest move makes Sugarmade one of the largest publicly traded cannabis supply companies. The company shows no sign of stopping there, having announced its intention to continue with an expansion strategy. The next likely move may well be brand acquisition, providing a higher price-to-earnings ratio for investors. Having already made an acquisition proposal for a Washington state retailer with $5 million in annual revenues, Sugarmade is on its way to becoming a more public fixture in the cannabis market.

Financing Growth in Cannabis

As in any sector, the success of expansion strategies will depend upon their liquidity. Fortunately, the state of the cannabis market appears to currently ensure a steady stream of finance. The US cannabis market alone is expected to be worth $10 billion in 2018, 50 percent more than it was only two years ago. Canada’s market is also expected to be worth billions, as legalization transfers the recreational consumer base from illegal dealers to legitimate businesses.

Cannabis companies are using this opportunity to channel finance into growth. Some are striking deals for bank loans in newly legalized regions, while others are using public offerings to raise fresh finance through sales of shares.

Sugarmade is taking a different approach, using expansion to fund further expansion. Following the BizRight and Sky Unlimited deals, the company has upgraded its projections for revenue in 2019 from $6 million to $70 million. Its previous deals will now provide the liquidity for future acquisitions, allowing a rolling strategy of expansion across the sector.

The pick-and-shovel plays look to pay off.

Cannabis Companies Making Big Moves

As the market keeps growing, so do many of the companies working in cannabis.

GW Pharmaceuticals Plc (NASDAQ: GWPH) is a world leader in the development of cannabis-related medicines, thanks to its strong research program and manufacturing expertise. Already a major player in the sector, the company has recently sought funds for expansion through a public offering. The result was an extra $345 million in funds, reflecting investors’ faith in the cannabis sector and in the future of companies such as GW. These funding will allow the company to keep growing its research and production work, with that research work expanding its portfolio of cannabis-related intellectual property.

While some companies invest more heavily in cannabis, others are diversifying. Pharmaceuticals manufacturer AbbVie, Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) is the company behind Marinol, a drug used to tackle appetite loss due to AIDS and cancer treatments. But while Marinol’s active ingredient is chemically identical to THC, the best-known active ingredient in cannabis, the company has filed only a handful of patents relating to cannabis and shows no sign of expansion into the sector. It’s a move that may help AbbVie in marketing to cannabis’s opponents, but one that leaves the space open for competitors.

The expansion of cannabis companies has supported the emergence of specialist support services, such as those provided by MariMed, Inc. (OTCQB: MRMD). A cannabis consulting firm, MariMed provides professional guidance on the development, funding, and operation of cultivation facilities. This can help other firms navigate the complicated issues surrounding the industry, covering everything from real estate to regulatory compliance. The company recently invested in Sprout, a software company supporting cannabis brands and dispensaries, allowing it to bundle software with its other business solutions.

Medmen Enterprises, Inc. (OTCQX: MMNFF) (CSE: MMEN),  has used expansion to develop a vertically integrated supply chain. The company works in both cultivation and retail, meaning that it handles the product all the way from planting first seedlings to placing packaged cannabis into customers’ hands. Its recent acquisition of dispensary and cultivation facilities from Treadwell Simpson Partnership means that it is spreading its carefully managed brand from existing bases in California, Nevada, and New York into Florida.

The growth of the cannabis market is providing a flow of finance, leading to acquisitions and cross-company investments across the sector.

420 with CNW – Poll Suggests North Dakota Will Legalize Marijuana Next Month

A new opinion poll in North Dakota is suggesting that those in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana will take the day when the matter is voted upon during the midterm polls next month.

This ballot measure comes after the state legalized medical marijuana two years ago and implementation is set to start next year.

Measure 3 is expected to legalize cannabis for adult use without any limits on how much marijuana someone can possess or grow. The minimum age limit for this adult consumption has been set at 21. The measure also seeks to expunge all marijuana convictions and protect the state from liability claims originating from marijuana convictions.

The new opinion poll suggests that 51 percent of the voters will vote “yes” while 36 percent will vote “no” to the ballot measure. However, a significant fraction (13 percent) of the participants in the poll revealed that they hadn’t made up their mind regarding how they will vote. This group could well hold the key to determining which direction the vote eventually swings on voting day.

Demographics are also likely to play a role in the outcome of the vote. Voters older than 50 seem to be biased in favor of continued prohibition while those who are younger than 50 want prohibition to end.

Advocates are therefore hoping that younger voters turn up in massive numbers so that the measure sails through in November. The opinion poll conducted by The Kitchen Group had 57 percent of its respondents in the over 50 age group.

It is noteworthy that respondents were more likely to agree with Measure 3 if they were told that legalizing marijuana would go a long way towards combating the opiate crisis and leaving the meagre law enforcement resources to be directed to more serious issues.

North Dakota is unique from other states that have legalized cannabis in a sense that those who are advocating for the ballot measure don’t have big financiers on their side while the people opposed to the measure have invested massively to sway public opinion against recreational cannabis.

LegalizeND (Legalize North Dakota, a committee set up to campaign for legalization) has been working tirelessly to provide accurate information about marijuana in order to counter the propaganda spread by those opposed to legalization.

Observers say both sides of the ballot measure appear to be getting more funding from sources outside the state when compared to the campaign funds being generated locally. Those opposed to the measure have nearly got all their funding from one source (an anti-marijuana lobby group called SAM, or Smart Approaches to Marijuana). Cannabis companies like TransCanna and VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) can only watch from a distance as the trend of cannabis legalization unfolds.
