420 with CNW — What You Should Know About Marijuana-Infused Drinks, Dosages

The popularity of cannabis and cannabis products has increased significantly in the last few years as more states legalize the herb for various uses. This has also led to the introduction of new cannabis products into the market, including cannabis-infused beverages, which exist in different forms such as kombuchas, tonics, cocktails, juice-based drinks, flavored seltzers and sparkling waters. Consumers who haven’t tried beverages infused with cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are often not sure what dosage may work for them.

Most beverages that contain THC, which is a psychoactive cannabinoid, have varying dosages that can range between 2 mg and 100 mg. On the other hand, infused drinks that contain CBD, which is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, have dosages ranging between 15 and 50 mg.

If you would like to try infused drinks but aren’t sure if they are stronger than edibles, it is important to keep in mind that the potency over beverages depends not only on the dosage but also how an individual’s body processes the cannabinoids. Different individuals respond to varying doses differently, based on factors such as body chemistry.

Usually, it takes between 45 minutes to one and a half hours for the body to process an edible, after which the cannabinoid is absorbed into the bloodstream. On the other hand, cannabis-infused beverages only take between 8–15 minutes to take effect, which is why it is important to pay attention to your serving size, especially if you’re new to infused drinks and edibles.

How can you know the right dosage for you?

Individuals who are curious about marijuana and are new to using the substance should start with a beverage with a low dose, perhaps 2 to 4 mg of THC per about 8 ounces of fluid. Ensure that you also consume the drink slowly, which allow you to observe how your body reacts to the cannabinoids as well as how you feel and how long it takes for you to feel the drink’s effects.

If you’re an occasional cannabis consumer, drinks in the 20 mg range may suit your taste. You are also advised to take it slowly and observe how your body reacts to the beverage. Regular marijuana consumers who most likely have a high tolerance to the herb may consume a high-dose drink. Beverages that contain about 100 mg of THC may be ideal.

If you’re a regular consumer of cannabis but are new to high-dose beverages, you are advised to take it slowly and space out your doses. This will afford you the opportunity to observe how your body feels throughout the experience. This is especially vital for individuals taking infused drinks for health and wellness purposes.

Companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) have perfected making infused drinks, and the growing popularity of these drinks speaks volumes about the science behind them.

420 with CNW — California Cannabis Seizures Skyrocket Despite Legalization

The illicit cannabis market has proven to be quite resilient. Although the assumption had been that once states start legalizing the controversial plant, consumers would ditch the black market for legal pot, that’s not how things have turned out. Years after recreational cannabis was first legalized, the black market still vastly outsells America’s state-legal marijuana industry.

In California, for instance, the illicit market is estimated to generate $8 billion per year while the legal market makes around $4.4 billion annually. As such, authorities in California, which features the most lucrative cannabis industry in the country, have stepped up their efforts against black-market dealers.

The past few years have seen a steady rise in the amount of illicit cannabis that authorities in the state have seized. According to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the Department of Justice’s annual Campaign Against Marijuana Planting Program (“CAMP”) has seized and destroyed almost 1.2 million illicit cannabis plants this year.

This is nearly double the 614,267 illicit cannabis plants that were seized in 2018. The CAMP program has been seizing more and more illicit pot per year, eradicating 953,459 plants in 2019 and 1.1 million in 2020. While those numbers are high, they do not compare to 2009, when the CAMP program seized and destroyed an unprecedented 4.5 million cannabis plants.

Even as California and the country at large have enjoyed increasing cannabis sales, the cannabis black market has held on like a tick, stealing already scarce water, denying states millions of dollars in tax revenue and damaging the environment in the process. Not to mention the fact that illicit cannabis products are more likely to be subpar and impact the health of users. The CAMP program has been hard at work this year, seizing more than 180,000 pounds of marijuana as well as 165 weapons; in addition, the program has removed more than 67,000 pounds of cultivation infrastructure in just 13 weeks, according to the state’s attorney general’s office.

In his statement, Bonta said that illegal cannabis grows are harmful to the environment, the health and safety of the community, and the economy. He directed his office to begin a six-month review of the CAMP program in partnership with local, state and federal agencies to make the program even more effective at finding illegal cannabis farms, destroying the operations, and addressing their environmental, labor and economic consequences.

This clampdown is good for licensed sector players such as American Cannabis Partners because all actors would play by the same rules once illicit sellers are weeded out.

420 with CNW — How Tech Is Transforming the Marijuana Industry

Despite being one of the youngest sectors in the country, the United States’ state-legal cannabis industry has been dubbed the fastest growing industry in the country. Cannabis companies have generated billions of dollars in revenue in the few years cannabis has been legal, providing hundreds of thousands of job opportunities and filling state coffers with millions in cannabis tax revenue.

The industry is projected to undergo exponential growth in the next couple of years, pulling in a whopping $43 billion in legal cannabis sales by 2025. However, cannabis could not have gotten to where it is so far without technological advancements that have made cultivating and processing the plant a lot more efficient, and experts predict that technology will play a significant role in the industry’s growth.

Software-based technology will be especially critical to cannabis businesses moving forward. As it is, most players in the cannabis space cannot access financial services such as wireless payments and loans as the murky regulatory space has kept financial providers away. Fintech company KindTap is the first company to offer a credit payment option for businesses in the cannabis space, first launching in Massachusetts before going to other U.S. markets, including Florida, Maine, and New York by the end of the year.

KindTap provides revolving credit lines for upfront purchases and a credit payment system for businesses. Cathy Corby Iannuzzelli, an executive at KindTap, joined the fintech after she noticed cashless payments were virtually nonexistent in the cannabis industry while working for a client in Denver.

Compared to other industries, cannabis barely has a comprehensive regulatory structure and runs on a patchwork of state policies, and this often results in a pile of bureaucracy and paperwork, especially for multistate operators that have to keep track of different policies and requirements in different states. It will likely be some time before lawmakers federally decriminalize cannabis and finally fix the mess that is America’s cannabis industry, but in the meantime, companies have to adhere to current policies.

Simplifya, a Denver-based cannabis compliance software provider, has developed software that ensures cannabis businesses stay compliant amid a fragmented regulatory environment. The operational compliance software automates complex processes and boasts badge tracking, tailored reporting, SOPs and employee accountability features.

Springbig, a customer loyalty and text message communications provider, has developed a single source of truth customer relationship management (“CRM”) that acts as a database to record in store and online purchases. It can also capture key purchasing and behavioral data, integrate with existing dispensary POS and eCommerce systems seamlessly. These are just a few examples of the companies that have studied the market and developed software-based solutions for many of the issues that plague cannabis. As the industry becomes larger and draws more clientele, technology will be instrumental in achieving marijuana’s maximum potential.

Given the pace at which the industry is evolving, many cannabis companies, including Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC), are putting technology at the core of their operations in order to gain an edge over other sector actors.

420 with CNW — Nearly Half of American Consumers Prefer Cannabis over Alcohol

A report recently published by New Frontier Data examined different features of health and wellness-related consumption patterns among current marijuana consumers in the United States. New Frontier Data is the leading technology, data and analytics company that specializes in the global marijuana industry. The latest report was released in partnership with Jointly and SōRSE.

Marijuana legalization in different states across the country has allowed marijuana-friendly yoga spaces and marijuana social lounges to be established as alternatives to conventional spaces. Currently, medical marijuana is legal in 36 states in the United States. while its recreational use is legal in 18 states, as well as Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the District of Columbia.

The increasing acceptability of marijuana use in regulated social and public spaces, as well as outside an individual’s home, offers various opportunities for consumers to access marijuana to improve their social, mental and physical well-being.

The study found that as marijuana normalization continued to grow across the U.S. market, so did its consumption. The report noted that roughly 22% of individuals use marijuana in support of their general wellness. Another 79% reported that marijuana had an overwhelmingly positive effect on their lives.

Executive chair and founder of New Frontier Data Giadha A. DeCarcer stated that the U.S. marijuana consumer base was diversifying, with reasons for the plant’s use extending beyond its recreational use into broader wellness and medical applications. DeCarcer noted that the company was now focused on reporting on marijuana consumer behavior and expanding into more refined aspects of marijuana’s medical use across Europe and North America. This, she said, would offer industry stakeholders a 360-degree view of the marijuana consumer opportunity.

The report’s key findings include the following:

  • As the legal access to cannabis-infused beverages grows, alcohol replacement could possibly become more successful for consumers. The report found that almost 48% of marijuana consumers are replacing some alcohol use with marijuana. This means that opportunities for producers of infused drinks exist, as the beverages are increasingly considered to be more suitable replacements for alcoholic drinks.
  • Combining exercise and marijuana challenges the stereotype that describes individuals who consume marijuana as unhealthy and living a sedentary lifestyle. The report found that 13% of cannabis consumers regularly used the herb before exercise to enhance training.
  • The report also found that stress relief was one of the main reasons for marijuana use, with more than 50% of current consumers admitting that they consumed marijuana to improve their mental health amid the pandemic.

This growing acceptance of marijuana could explain why companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) are expanding their footprint across the country at such a high pace.

420 with CNW — New Study Concludes That Crime Reduction Effects of Cannabis Legalization Are Underestimated

For years, drug-reform activists in America argued that the country’s prohibitionist policies were counterproductive; instead of curbing drug abuse and crippling the criminal enterprises behind the drug trade, prohibition has imprisoned countless people of color for minor drug charges, shackling them with criminal records for the rest of their lives, and enriched the drug cartels that supply the black market with drugs.

Decades after former President Richard Nixon declared the war on drugs, the movement has been declared a failure by most pundits. Drug-reform advocates argued that rather than prohibit the sale of cannabis, launching a legal, regulated market would do what the war on drugs sought to do much more effectively.

Now a new study has found that not only does cannabis have a positive effect on crime reduction but that the effect of legalizing the controversial plant on crime numbers has actually been underestimated. Ever since American states began legalizing cannabis for medical and recreational use, several studies have attempted to look at the relationship between crime numbers and cannabis laws.

However, researchers have been severely limited in their research methodology, the study found, as they rely on FBI data collected from local police departments across the country. Since reporting this data to the FBI is entirely voluntary, the result is that the data on crime and cannabis underplays the extent to which medical cannabis laws have affected violent and property crime.

The study involved researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (“USDA”) Economic Research Service and Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The researchers say that the country’s drug policy presumes that prohibition has a negative effect on crime rates, but unfortunately, insufficient data has made it impossible to test this assumption in medical marijuana states.

To get around the knowledge gap, the researchers developed a novel imputation procedure that allowed them to reduce the measurement error bias and estimate the true extent of medical marijuana laws on violent and property crimes, they write in the final paper titled “Smoke and Fear: The Effects of Marijuana Prohibition on Crime.”

The group’s final estimations revealed that medical marijuana laws would be followed by significant reductions in violent and property crime rates, especially in Mexican border states. This is likey because people are more likely to buy cannabis from legal vendors who have to ensure their products are safe, tested and meet certain standards, especially if they are using it medicinally.

Aside from reducing crime, medical marijuana is having an even bigger impact on the health and well-being of its users, and these positive effects could grow as more people adopt tools such as the RYAH Smart Inhaler manufactured by RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) for the purpose of precisely measuring the dose of marijuana flower that medical marijuana users smoke.

420 with CNW — Cannabis Legalization Caused Significant Decline in Illegal Cannabis Seizure Samples

Research led by a top cannabis investigator for the federal government revealed that state-level cannabis legalization has left the DEA with few samples of seized illicit marijuana to analyse. This finding supports the claim made by legalization advocates that consumer demand for unregulated marijuana from illicit channels will decrease as more legal markets are established.

The study, which was published in the “Biological Psychiatry” journal, was authored by Mahmoud ElSohly. ElSohly is in charge of the country’s sole federally authorized marijuana growing facility at the University of Mississippi. The study states that the number of samples received over the last five or so years has declined significantly because of the legalization of cannabis for either recreational or medical purposes in various states in the United States.

The decreasing number of seizures reported in the study provides the latest indication of the shrinkage of the unregulated market while the marijuana legalization movement spreads as more states legalize the plant for medical or recreational use.

Recent data released by the FBI also shows that cannabis arrests are also declining across the country, with numbers from last year showing significant decreases. An analysis from the U.S. Sentencing Commission that was released earlier this year found that federal cannabis trafficking cases also dropped last year as more states moved to legalize. A separate report released by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts found that while cases involving cannabis declined by roughly a quarter, federal prosecutions of drug-related crimes increased overall in 2019.

Another study released in 2018 by the Cato Institute discovered that state-level cannabis legalization had considerably undercut cannabis smuggling. A recent study published in “Biological Psychiatry” also found that even as the number of DEA illicit marijuana samples gradually declines as the legalization movement spreads, the more limited supply shows that THC potency grew over time.

The study discovered that the average THC potency in seized cannabis increased from about 9.7% in 2009 to 14.8% in 2018, then it decreased slightly in 2019 to 13.8%. In addition, the average CBD concentration in seized cannabis dropped to 0.14% in 2017 from 0.4% in 2009. In 2019, CBD concentration then increased to 0.6%.

Legislators, researchers and advocates have argued that research that relies on the government’s marijuana is compromised, given that it usually contains considerably lower cannabinoid levels in comparison with the products sold in state-legal dispensaries.

Legalization has also made it possible for massive growth to be registered in different sectors of the cannabis industry, and the continuing success of companies such as Simply Sonoma Inc. provides concrete proof of that growth.
