420 with CNW – Marijuana Could Help Prevent Diabetes Resulting from Severe COVID-19

A lot is being learned about the intersection between consuming marijuana and diabetes. Recently, a team of researchers has revealed that lots of people may be prone to developing diabetes after suffering from the severe forms of the COVID-19 disease. This complication can be alleviated using cannabis, the researchers think.

To confirm this theory, the researchers have set up a registry aimed at gathering data from doctors to establish how many people develop diabetes after suffering from severe COVID-19 and how many of those people had a history of using marijuana either recreationally or for medicinal purposes.

The CoviDiab Registry, as the researchers have called this research registry, is run by a team from the King’s College London in the UK.

They plan on building upon some earlier research which was completed towards the end of 2019. In that study, it was discovered that people who consumed marijuana had moderate blood glucose levels, an indicator that the person was less likely to develop diabetes. A similar study also found that the fasting insulin concentration in study subjects who consumed marijuana was lower than those who didn’t.

The King’s College London team is studying whether marijuana can increase the body’s ability to protect beta cells in the pancreas, thereby averting Type 1 diabetes which develops when the body is unable to make insulin.

The researchers also want to find out whether marijuana consumption accelerates the rate at which insulin production and sensitivity can resume after the ability of an individual’s body to process insulin has been compromised by severe COVID-19.

It is important at this point to emphasize that the link between marijuana use and COVID-19 is two-way. On the one hand, people who smoke marijuana are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 because smoke of any kind has an adverse effect on the lungs, thereby increasing your chances of suffering from severe forms of the COVID-19 disease.

420 with CNW – Federal Commission Supports Expanding Psychedelics and Cannabis Research for Military Veterans

A federal commission that was asked to generate recommendations which will help to improve how military veterans suffering from mental health issues are treated has come to an unexpected conclusion urging the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. federal government to do everything possible to ease research into psychedelics and marijuana.

After months of meetings, the commission, named Creating Options for Veterans’ Expedited Recovery (“COVER”), released its findings in a report authored in January. Surprisingly, this report hasn’t drawn as much attention as it deserves among the marijuana law reform movement and the media.

The panel, led by Jake Leinenkugel (a presidential nominee), asserted that psychedelics, such as MDMA and psilocybin, as well as marijuana, present promising ways to treat mental health conditions among military veterans.

The panel also noted that while medical marijuana and some psychedelics have been used while treating military veterans, the Schedule 1 status of these substances prevents the Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) from doing any research about the efficacy or risks of these treatment options.

Furthermore, the scheduling status of psychedelics and marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act makes it very hard for entities interested in doing research to obtain regulatory approval for the planned studies. The researchers are required to get permission from many federal government agencies, and some of those agencies are openly opposed to any medicinal use of marijuana.

The supply of research-grade marijuana, together with other controlled substances, is woefully inadequate. Reports also indicate that the marijuana available from the sole government-approved supplier in Mississippi is chemically closer to industrial hemp than to the marijuana which is available in the retail dispensaries in states where marijuana has been legalized.

For this reason, the COVER panel recommends that the legislature and the executive arms of the federal government compels NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) to develop varieties of marijuana whose THC content is at par with the medical marijuana that patients are accessing in states with enabling marijuana laws. This will ensure that researchers engage in research whose findings have relevance to the community.

The panel also wrote that using medical marijuana and psychedelics as treatment options for military veterans has cost implications and yet there is limited information about the efficacy and risks associated with these products. The VA was therefore urged to conduct rigorous research so that answers can be obtained about medical cannabis and psychedelics.

In the same vein, physicians working with the VA need to be equipped with research-based information about cannabis, MDMA and psilocybin so that they can have meaningful discussions with the military veterans in their care.

Since the panel has members selected by the President and those co-opted by Congressional leaders, analysts say sector companies like Pure Extracts Corp. hope the report will be given the seriousness it deserves and prompt action taken to correct the problems identified.

420 with CNW – Los Angeles Contemplates Overhauling Legal Cannabis System

Cannabis had been federally prohibited for several decades before public attitudes towards marijuana started changing in the late nighties. As drug reform advocates championed for marijuana legalization, more and more states legalized marijuana with the aim of earning tax revenue from cannabis sales, edging out the illicit market and repairing the damage done by the decades’ long war on drugs.

However, a few years after a number of state-legal cannabis programs were launched, it has emerged that they aren’t as effective as projected. Despite bringing in millions of dollars in tax revenue, states like Colorado and California have had a hard time pulling clientele from the illicit market. Similarly, Los Angeles has had such a troubling legal marijuana program that a City Council Committee has approved a series of changes to it.

The city was once seen as a potential showcase for the budding cannabis industry, but the reality does not measure up to the vision. The illicit market still thrives and licensed shops have repeatedly stated that everything costs too much and it takes too long to deal with City Hall. To make matters worse, the programs designed to help communities that had been unfairly targeted by the decades’ long war on drugs have been slow to take shape.

The proposed changes include tweaking a definition to match language on state law, limiting delivery licenses until 2025 only to businesses that meet “social-equity benchmarks, permitting businesses to relocate while being licensed, clarifying what employees are supposed to be subjected to background checks and streamlining the application process.” Such programs were initially designed to help individuals who were convicted of a marijuana related offense and lower income residents who live or have lived in neighborhoods marked by high marijuana arrests.

According to the city’s top cannabis regulator Cat Packer, the changes are urgent. She noted that the industry and City have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, an economic crisis and nationwide protests over systemic racial injustice. And with these circumstances, marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, and banking and insurance institutions shy away from cannabis businesses due to fear of federal retaliation.

“The intersection between cannabis policy and racial injustice is clear to me. Black and brown communities have been disproportionately impacted, disproportionately policed, and we made a commitment to actively acknowledge those harms and address the harms of the drug war,” said Packer.

However, according to Adam Spikier, an executive director of the industry group Southern California Coalition, the proposals are a ‘mixed bag.’ They may be well intended, he says, but placing an inflexible limit on who could qualify for a delivery license is “open to a lot of problems” as it could leave out long-standing operators who are already enmeshed in the industry. “I think that creates more problems than solutions,” he said.

Licensing has also been a major issue, with the city being sued this April by license applicants claiming the city’s licensing process is flawed. What remains to be seen is whether these changes will be adopted into the state’s cannabis industry, and industry watchers think entities like SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING) will be happier to see any changes implemented rather than remaining on paper without being felt on the ground.

Released to the public on Tuesday, the poll found that Americans consider marijuana consumption more morally acceptable than gay relationships, medical testing of animals, the death penalty and abortion.

The poll represents current attitudes towards marijuana, as people become more accepting of cannabis and plenty of states legalize the controversial plant. Seven out of ten of all the respondents polled said using marijuana is morally acceptable, with only 28% stating that consuming marijuana is morally unacceptable.

“At least seven in 10 U.S. adults say birth control, drinking alcohol, getting a divorce, sex between an unmarried man and woman, gambling, and smoking marijuana are acceptable moral behaviors,” Gallup announced on Twitter. That’s an impressive increase from the 65% of those surveyed by Gallup last year who said that cannabis consumption is morally acceptable.

Some activities that Americans found less morally acceptable than smoking marijuana include sex between teenagers (38%), wearing clothes made from animal furs (54%), human cloning (12%) and pornography (38%). Gallup’s recent survey has shown what previous surveys have found: there’s a major divide among Americans with differing political ideologies.

People who identify as liberal were far more likely to view marijuana consumption as morally acceptable (83%), while 51% of those who identify as conservative didn’t find anything wrong with smoking marijuana. Last year’s poll by Gallup found that 66% of the respondents supported ending marijuana prohibition. 51% of those who supported legalization were self-reported Republicans and 76% were Democrats.

Gallup’s summary of the 2019 survey is applicable to this year’s poll; “Most Americans do not object on moral grounds to people drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana. Of the two, they are more likely to see drinking alcohol as an acceptable behavior, perhaps because it is legal in all states while smoking marijuana is not. Some states have recently legalized marijuana and many others are considering doing so, perhaps removing some of the stigma associated with the drug. But with roughly two-thirds of the public saying marijuana use is morally acceptable, it seems there will not be sufficient opposition to thwart attempts to make it legal.”

It would be surprising if sector players like Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) didn’t expect these results since it has been abundantly clear that the U.S. population supports marijuana legalization.
