420 with CNW – 5 Things to Discuss about Medical Marijuana with Your Doctor

In the United States today, there are a total of 33 states that have legalized the use marijuana in a medical setting, and 11 states have given the go-ahead to use marijuana for recreational purposes. However, the physician assistant school has not included the education on the effects of cannabis, the natural cannabis-like molecules (endocannabinoids), and the way THC interacts with other medicines as part of their nursing syllabus.

According to Theresa Mallick, who practices at the division of pain medicine in Stanford Health Care, due to changes in laws where weed is concerned, more patients are bound to ask about the possibilities of using marijuana either medical or recreationally. So, to keep them safe as a doctor, it is your responsibility to equip them with information on the positive and negative effects of marijuana.

Through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Theresa Mallick recently taught a webinar about marijuana. According to Mallick, it is essential for doctors to go ahead and address the topics below with their patients.

  1. Voice Your Opinion About Marijuana Consumption

Honesty is crucial in getting your patient to open up. Moreover, they will be able to accept your advice on whether marijuana is a suitable form of treatment or not if you are truthful about what your thoughts on marijuana are.

  1. When Talking About Marijuana with Your Patients, Ask Them to Register for Medical Marijuana Cards

Advise the patient to apply for the medical marijuana card, which is easy to get in the states where medical marijuana is legal. With the medical card, you will be able to provide them with information on medial utility, safety, and its interaction with other drugs, treatment agreements, and aims of care.

  1. Give Them Tips For Buying Marijuana Safely

When buying cannabis, there is a probability of buying contaminated products; therefore, patients should be educated on how to purchase safe products. Educate them on how to read labels, the base of the product either weed or hemp, the source, and the manufacturing process before the product reaches the market.

Also, advise them not to inhale any product containing propylene glycol since this could cause them respiratory problems.

  1. Help Them Distinguish Between Inhaled And Orally Ingested Marijuana

Mallick-Searle says that the probability of patients opting to use marijuana in edibles is high because many believe that it is safer than inhaling. However, she advises doctors to use the inhalation method when assessing patients as this will show how cannabis affects the patient’s blood levels and psycho-activity.  This is not possible with orally ingested marijuana as the time of cognitive effects varies.

  1. Inform Them About The Dangers Of Cognitive Impairment

Physicians have the responsibility of warning the patients on the dangers of conducting certain activities such as driving or operating machines while under the influence of weed. According to the Ontario Medical Association, the levels of THC in the ingested marijuana, and the mode of consumption determines the duration of the cognitive effect. When cannabis is inhaled, the impact takes place immediately and lasts only for a few hours, but when it is eaten in edibles, it takes a while for the effects to be apparent, and last longer than when inhaled.

Industry analysts are currently evaluating how marijuana companies like Hemptown USA and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) could be impacted by these findings.

420 with CNW – Colorado Research Investigate Marijuana’s Ecological Footprint

The Department of Health and Environment in Denver, Colorado, is studying marijuana’s ecological footprint. Colorado Public Radio reported that researchers are conducting the studies not because the citizens of Colorado are releasing too much weed smoke into the air, but because they want to how the marijuana crop affects the environment.

An environment consultant with CPDHE, Katilin Urso, said that Colorado is not adhering to the ozone standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Ozone is a type of gas made of oxygen atoms, and it is hazardous in the atmosphere. In Colorado, ozone gas is rated as the highest pollutant, and this prompted the researchers to probe into what is contributing to excess emission of the ozone gas.

When Kyle Clark spoke to Urso, she said that the reason why the researchers are looking at the marijuana plant is that it produces terpenes (volatile organic compounds), which give the plant its unique scent.

When terpenes mix with other air pollutants and the sun, they add to the dangerous ozone layers which can make the air unfit for people to breathe.

According to Urso, the question most researchers are attempting to answer is the extent to which the marijuana sector is adding to the increases in the damage to the ozone layer. Moreover, how much terpenes are released into the atmosphere for each pound of marijuana grown? Also, they want to identify ways to develop environmental-friendly practices to be adopted by the marijuana industry.

Urso said the reason they are studying marijuana is that it is one of the many plants that emit volatile organic compounds in the environment. They are studying cannabis because of zoning and regulations, citing that the Denver metro area has the highest level of pollution and population, and is also where most marijuana legal growers are located. The marijuana industry and the growers are cooperating with the state in terms of data collection.

The Department of Health in Colorado’s primary purpose of this study is to determine the specific components being released into the air by the marijuana plant. This is because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) failed to quantify the effect of marijuana on the environment in the legalized states.

Morgan Fox says that he has been aware of the research which started in 2018 and is to end in September 2019 with the findings being released the coming summer. He says that he supports the study, although he does not know precisely how marijuana is contributing to the ozone depletion problem. To contribute positively to the environment, as an industry, they have adopted better lighting and planting techniques. They have also introduced a recycling system where customers can recycle the packaging through proper sanitization.

In 2011, the Department of Health conducted similar research on beer craft industries. Although they were causing much damage to the environment, the department suggested more efficient ways such as recycling bags used in production. They also warned against spilling beer during packaging because it releases ethanol upon evaporation, which is bad for the environment.

Analysts expect industry players like Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) to eagerly await the findings of this research since more light would be shed on an aspect of the marijuana industry that hadn’t been scientifically investigated.

420 with CNW – Another Marijuana Legalization Bill Introduced in Mexico Legislature

On Tuesday, a key Mexican lawmaker introduced a new marijuana legalization bill in parliament. The legislation would allow people to cultivate marijuana in their homes.

The coordinator of the ruling MORENA party’s bench in the Deputies Chamber, Mario Delgado Carrillo, while filing the legislation, argued that regulating marijuana would help in promoting health among the Mexicans. Furthermore,  having the government in charge of the program would help in reducing industry monopolization by the big marijuana companies.

In the bill, he outlined the history of the marijuana ban in Mexico while citing that there is not enough evidence to support the ban. The prohibition of cannabis is repressive, and it violates the fundamental rights of the Mexicans. He also added that legal access to marijuana could be used to treat patients with certain conditions.

The bill also states that prohibition has led to widespread violence in Mexico through the formation and multiplication of criminal gangs. Furthermore, marijuana legalization would create jobs and stimulate growth in the Mexican economy.

As stated in the bill, the government would form a department called Cannsalud, which would be responsible for regulating the legal cannabis market. The department would be a branch of the federal government with technical, operational, and management roles to help in the realization of the sole purpose of the bill, marijuana legalization.

Last year, Mexican lawmakers went on a benchmarking trip to Canada to learn more about their marijuana legalization model. In Canada, marijuana is sold through government stores. It seems the Mexican lawmakers have adopted the Canadian system of the government-run approach to marijuana regulation.

The Mexican legislation would permit adults to cultivate a maximum of six marijuana plants for recreational use.

According to Delgado, the state would constantly supervise and control the growth and use of marijuana to make sure that it stays within the margin of legality, and the marijuana market is not left to the control of the citizens.

Under the bill, a public company would be formed as an intermediary to help identify and mitigate risks possible in the market; such as international companies maximizing their profits by utilizing weed above the legal potency limit, which would prove harmful to human health.

The Mexican Senate has been organizing events to promote talks about marijuana legalization for the past several weeks. A former White House drug czar was featured in one event where he urged the Mexican lawmakers to implement strong regulation for the cannabis market.

Earlier this month, Senator Julio Mencaca of the MORENA party introduced new marijuana legislation that does not call for the government to control sales.

Experts believe marijuana industry players, such as Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF), in other markets are watching to see which of these bills is eventually passed in Mexico.

420 with CNW – Key Details of the Massachusetts Marijuana Home Delivery System

Very soon, residents of Massachusetts may begin enjoying marijuana home delivery. New rules allowing marijuana companies to delivery cannabis direct to their customers were approved last week by the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission. After they were adopted, the commission created new licenses for companies specializing in marijuana delivery.

According to the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), home delivery for medical marijuana patients had already been approved. However, the 2016 ballot measures do provide for legalization of recreational marijuana home delivery; allowing it would give marijuana companies a chance to enter a market that is controlled by black market operators.

Britte McBride, CCC Commissioner, wrote an opinion piece for CommonWealth Magazine that marijuana is here to stay. He added that licensed companies, which are regulated and tax-paying businesses, are in open competition with illegal home delivery. To curb the operation of illicitly delivered marijuana, the commission has come up with legislation (pending) to authorize monetary sanctions against unlicensed and unregulated businesses.

During the first two years, only those in the social equity program and locally owned businesses approved for home delivery will be given licenses.

To promote small and minority businesses, the commission issued two-year exclusive licenses, which will be effective immediately after the permit is issued, especially after seeing how black and Latino communities were affected by the war on drugs. After noting that to start a delivery company required little startup capital, the officials encouraged small entrepreneurs to participate.

Social equity program applicants must be residents of a community that qualifies for economic empowerment. Their income should also be below 40% of the federal poverty levels.

The new rules require marijuana delivery companies to enter into a contract with a licensed retailer if they are transporting other people’s products.

For home delivery, the customer has to confirm that they are 21 years or older at the dispensary and again when cannabis is delivered. Deliveries should only be done between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., and the delivery people will be monitored by GPS and body cameras to make sure orders are delivered to the right place, and for the security of the employee.

Although cash payments are permitted, businesses are urged to implement an electronic or online payment system. The new rules prohibit carrying marijuana worth more than $10,000 at a time, to help minimize theft.

Deliveries will not be permitted in colleges or any university housing, shelters, hotels, or government-subsidized housing. Customers should order only from their place of residence. Also, deliveries will not be made in those parts of Massachusetts that do not permit the sale of marijuana.

To start companies to offer delivery services, the state and local officials have to approve delivery licenses, said Steve Hoffman, CCC chairman. However, first, they need to put the application form on their site, which will take several months since the commission isn’t accepting applications as yet.

Experts believe that the entire cannabis industry, including companies like MustGrow Biologics Corp. (CSE: MGRO) and ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) is glad that people in Massachusetts will soon enjoy marijuana home delivery.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Independent Vaping Retailers & Manufacturers Urge Congress to Establish Significant Market Reform

Over 600 independently owned vaping retailers and manufacturers came together to release a white paper today formally responding to CDC claims about the link of e-cigarettes and recent illnesses and deaths. The white paper also outlined specific solutions for policy makers to address the youth epidemic including the limitation of flavors to lower nicotine products sold through adult-only retail establishments. It also suggested implementing an examination of nicotine strength and risk profiles as well as encouraging manufacturers to build age verification tools into all hardware. “Although state health departments and the FDA have continued to link recent respiratory illnesses with illegal THC use, the CDC reports did not adequately differentiate between THC and nicotine vape even though they are completely different industries,” vaping retailer AMV Holdings’ president Sam Salaymeh stated in the news release. “The failure of the CDC to demand THC screening of patients who refuse to admit to such use is irresponsible and dangerous. This oversight has caused wide-spread panic among consumers and government policy makers and negatively impacted public health. We are now seeing people go back to traditional smoking and a significant reduction in the rate of smokers who adopt nicotine vaping for harm reduction. The entire nicotine vaping industry, which has helped millions transition away from combustible cigarettes over the past decade without resulting in severe respiratory illnesses, is suffering severe economic hardship. We have had to shut down many stores and lay off more than 15% of our workforce due to the actions of drug dealers selling contaminated THC cartridges. That should not happen in a country founded on freedom and justice.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Organigram Holdings Inc. (TSX: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI) Advancing Toward Production Capacity Increase
