420 with CNW – Radio Frequency Technology Tweaked to Protect Marijuana Quality

Food safety companies have for long used radio frequency technology to disinfect food. Now this technology is being adopted by the marijuana industry in order to kill pathogens like mold and mildew while maintaining the quality of the marijuana.

The existing methods that were the staple in the industry all came with their own challenges, and this new technique addresses all those shortcomings.

For example, many companies use autoclave technology to disinfect marijuana. This method uses a lot of heat, pressure and steam to sterilize marijuana. While the method is effective, it also alters the taste, smell and color of marijuana. These changes make the marijuana less desirable.

Irradiation can also be used to sterilize marijuana, and this option is widespread in Canada. While effective, the method comes with serious challenges. For example, the cobalt 60 ionizing process creates carcinogens in the marijuana, and cannabis producers cannot conduct this process on their farms or processing facilities.

Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to kill pathogens. However, this only works for the pathogens on the surface of the marijuana. Hydrogen peroxide also triggers oxidation, and this results in burnt marijuana that is devoid of terpenes.

Growers can also opt for extraction in order to deal with a mold and mildew problem. While this method is effective, it converts marijuana into concentrates, and these fetch a lower price on the market yet growers want to sell marijuana flower.

As you can see, all the options above don’t pass all the necessary tests of scalability, cost-effectiveness, safety and being chemical-free. This is where the radio frequency (RF) method trounces them all.

RF equipment works by exciting the water molecules present in marijuana. The friction generated as the water molecules are excited generates heat. The equipment monitors this heat and turns off when it reaches a certain threshold.

The heat created kills all the pathogens in the substance that is being sterilized without compromising the quality of the product.

Ziel, a food and marijuana safety company, pioneered this method of killing pathogens in marijuana. Arthur de Cordova, the managing director of the company, says that they branched out into the marijuana space after a young man approached them during an expo in California and asked them to look into killing mold and mildew in marijuana since Diel specializes in sterilizing food.

They thought about that request and ended up modifying their machine so that it could handle small batches of marijuana at a time. The equipment they developed (the APEX machine) can sterilize about 20 pounds of marijuana in 15 minutes.

Industry watchers believe that marijuana companies like Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and Chemistree Technology Inc. (CSE: CHM) (OTCQB: CHMJF) will soon make this novel sterilization method an industry standard since it offers so many advantages that existing methods lack.

420 with CNW – Oregon Lab Offers Vitamin E Acetate Testing Services

An analytic laboratory in Oregon is offering additional testing services to detect the presence of vitamin E acetate in cannabis vape products.

Vitamin E acetate has been linked to the hundreds of people who have developed pulmonary illnesses after vaping cannabis oil, and at least six fatalities have been attributed to these tainted cannabis products. The Portland-based Pixis Labs started performing tests for vitamin E acetate on Monday.

The lab developed the test after it emerged that federal and state health authorities were investigating the possibility that the spate of lung illnesses arising after people vaped cannabis oil products could be linked to the additive (vitamin E acetate).

On its own, the additive isn’t dangerous because it is a supplement that people have taken for long either orally or topically. However, when it is combusted, it gets into lung tissues and causes similar problems to what has been reported in the media.

Why, then do people put it in vape cartridges? As media investigations have revealed, some unscrupulous people have been adding this supplement in cannabis oil in order to dilute it or make it thinner.

The motivation for the inclusion of this additive are twofold. First, those making counterfeit vape cartridges may be unable to make cannabis oil whose viscosity is low enough to allow the oil to be vaped. In order to thin the oil, these illicit entities add vitamin E acetate to cannabis oil.

Secondly, cannabis oil is a highly priced product. It is therefore possible that unregulated actors are taking advantage of the high demand for cannabis oil by adulterating it with vitamin E acetate in order to make more money from a small amount of cannabis oil.

Pixis Labs general manager Derrick Tanner revealed that the testing facility had run several tests using samples provided by consumers in order to validate how well the testing equipment works. He was however tightlipped as to whether those initial tests had detected the additive in any of the samples provided.

Tanner added that 3grams of cannabis oil are needed to conduct this test that currently costs $140 at the lab.

Currently, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission hasn’t yet issued any regulatory changes in light of the risks posed by cannabis vape oil tainted with vitamin E acetate. For example, the labelling guidelines still don’t require processors to indicate what additives are present in the vape oil.

However, the state agency has announced that it will not hesitate to take any action necessary in order to protect the public from this emerging public health threat. The Trump administration plans to ban flavored e-cig nicotine liquids.

It isn’t clear whether this ban will also apply to vape cartridges that don’t contain nicotine, such as those having cannabis oil. That notwithstanding, experts think industry participants, such as Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Cannabis Stragetic Ventures Inc. (OTCQB: NUGS), would welcome any measure taken to bring this latest health threat to an end.

420 with CNW – Massachusetts Lawmakers Move to Address Vaping Dangers

Reports about illnesses and some fatalities possibly linked to the use of tainted vape cartridges has prompted lawmakers and state officials across the country to look for ways to address this challenge. Massachusetts is one of the states that has come out swiftly to confront this problem head-on.

On Thursday last week, the Cannabis Control Commission in Massachusetts voted unanimously to enforce new rules requiring marijuana cartridge manufacturers to list all the ingredients in their products.

Previously, those manufacturers were only expected to indicate the THC concentration and the other cannabinoids in the product. The new rules change this and require product labels to have information on all ingredients, including additives, terpenes and the thickening agents used.

The additives used in vape cartridges have attracted heightened scrutiny of late after health authorities in New York suggested that the spate of vape-related illnesses and deaths could be linked to Vitamin E acetate added to knock-off cartridges.

Steven Hoffman, the chairman of the Cannabis Control Commission, stated that one way that state regulators can help consumers is by giving them more information so that they consume products more responsibly. The added labeling requirements are intended to give consumers more information, he added.

The Cannabis Control Commission staff have also been directed by their Executive Director to collaborate more with testing labs in the state so that those facilities can develop testing protocols for all the additives included in vape cartridges.

The Cannabis Control Commission isn’t the only agency that is acting in response to the risks of tainted vape cartridges. The Public Health Department has also issued a directive to all healthcare providers to report to the department any illnesses linked to vaping cannabis cartridges.

So far, no such illnesses have been reported in Massachusetts, and the authorities want to do everything possible to keep it that way.

The same cannot be said for New Jersey which has so far registered 19 cases of the mysterious respiratory illness that has come to be linked to vaping marijuana. To contain that problem, Gov. Phil Murphy has created a special task force and given them sweeping authority to suggest any policy changes that can put the problem to an end and protect public health.

The governor doesn’t see how the problems associated with tainted vape cartridges will affect plans to legalize recreational marijuana in the state, so he wants the Assembly speaker and other Democratic leaders to move ahead with plans to table a new marijuana legalization bill.

Experts believe that the problem of tainted cartridges must be giving industry actors like Wildflower Brands Inc. (CSE: SUN) (OTCQB: WLDFF) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) sleepless nights too since they damage the good name of the industry.

420 with CNW – Canadian Company to Offer First Odorless Marijuana

Are you tired of the strong smell of marijuana? A Canadian company may have the solution you have been looking for if their license application is approved by Health Canada, the regulator of the marijuana industry in the country.

CannabCo Pharmaceuticals, an Ontario-based company, announced last Tuesday that it would launch its odorless marijuana, and the company boasts that it is the first in the world to offer such a product.

CannabCo Pharmaceuticals intends to use a technology that it has named PURECANN to create this odorless marijuana. The company adds that it has exclusive rights to use this technology in Canada.

The PURECANN technology was originally developed for use in the medical marijuana industry in order to eliminate the characteristic harshness associated with smoking marijuana. The technology removes this harshness without affecting the potency of the substance.

The absence of the odor and the harshness makes this new form of marijuana more appealing to beginners who often break out into coughing fits when they try smoking cannabis for the first time.

While the company hasn’t provided any details about how the odorless marijuana will be used, they pointed out that consumers will not have to buy any third-party products or accessories. All that they need is the odorless marijuana.

The first reaction of the people who heard about this odorless marijuana was to say that they are curious to find out what effect removing the odor will have on the potency of the marijuana. Others said that the odor of marijuana is a good indicator of its potency, so it would be interesting to find out what it would be like to smoke that odorless cannabis.

Perhaps the real question now is whether there is a sustainable market for this odorless marijuana. CannabCo Pharmaceuticals is looking at the market of people who hate the smell of marijuana, and this could be a profitable niche whose needs haven’t been addressed by the existing products on the market.

The company is also looking at people who find themselves in environments where the smell of cannabis would be an issue. For example, the smell of cannabis can be a flashpoint if one lives in an apartment block and the smell from his or her joint drifts to nearby units whose occupants are opposed to using marijuana.

Additionally, people who do work that isn’t safety-sensitive and wish to smoke a joint during their lunch break can also benefit from this odorless marijuana since they wouldn’t have to worry that the smell would cling to their clothes and skin.

It would be interesting to know whether industry players like VIVO Cannabis Inc. (TSX.V: VIVO) (OTCQX: VVCIF) and VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB) ever imagined that marijuana products would evolve to such an extent that companies now want to offer marijuana without the signature marijuana smell.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Organigram Holdings Inc.’s (TSX: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI) Noteworthy Corporate Governance, Financial Performance Drive Success

Organigram Holdings (TSX: OGI) (NASDAQ: OGI), the parent company of Organigram Inc., a leading licensed producer of cannabis, was recently highlighted in an article by Bloomberg titled, ‘Organigram a Canadian Pot Rarity After Four Profitable Quarters’ (http://cnw.fm/X1kps). An article further discussing the company reads, “Along with the company’s impressive corporate governance comes its equally notable — and consistent — financial performance. This is likely due to its team’s adherence to fiscal discipline, something that can be difficult to find in this industry. Bloomberg noted that, with four quarters of profitability under its belt, Organigram Holdings is ‘an anomaly in the Canadian cannabis market. . . . Organigram has higher margins than most of its peers and one of the lowest costs per gram in the industry even though it grows indoors, generally considered the most expensive method of production,’ the report stated. ‘Chief Executive Officer Greg Engel attributes this to its ability to get higher yields from its pot plants than companies that grow in greenhouses, as well as its automated packaging lines. No other large Canadian pot producer has managed to post such a long string of positive EBITDA.’”
