CannabisNewsBreaks – Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (ACTX) Poised to Provide Access to Healthy Food in Food Deserts

Advanced Container Technologies (OTC: ACTX) is confident its GrowPods – modular hydroponic greenhouses – could become a valuable tool in efforts to combat food insecurity. With GrowPods, the company notes, cultivation can be moved nearer to the point of consumption, allowing food to be harvested at its peak nutritional value. “Micro-farms, such as ACTX’s Grow Pods, are being evaluated as a potential solution for food insecurity. Last year, Virginia State University (‘VSU’) was given a $500,000 grant to explore micro-farms as a potential solution to what the school called ‘food deserts in urban neighborhoods.’ According to the school, the grant will build VSU’s capacity to provide comprehensive education on micro-farming,” a recent article reads. “Leonard Githinji, project director and sustainable and urban agriculture Cooperative Extension specialist at VSU, reports that more than 11% of the nation’s population and 10% of Virginia’s population are food insecure. ‘Residents in food-insecure areas, commonly known as food deserts, have little or no access to fresh, affordable and nutritious food, and often have higher instances of chronic diseases, such as obesity, due to poor diets,’ Githinji states. ‘Developing sustainable micro-farms in urban areas can have a profound impact on access to healthy food in food deserts.’”

420 with CNW — California State Fair Unveils Winners of Maiden Marijuana Competition

Last September, California officials announced that the California State Fair would host the country’s first-ever, state-sanctioned marijuana competition. Cannabis vendors from the state would be allowed to compete in the fair in categories such as cheese, beer and wine vendors, a move that pointed to the legitimization of the cannabis industry.

The state fair recently unveiled the winners of this historic competition, awarding 60 medals and trophies to companies whose products had been deemed superior by judges via laboratory tests. In a press release, Jess Durfee, the chair of the California Exposition & State Fair Board, said that including marijuana cultivation alongside olive oil, craft beer, wine and cheese was a solid move that perfectly aligned with the state’s rich history of agriculture.

Contestants submitted more than 300 items in three divisions based on the conditions they were grown in, whether it was mixed-light, indoor or outdoor. Each division was broken into 10 categories, each of which was based on the cannabinoid concentrations of compounds such as THCaCBGa and CBDa, as well as terpenes such as PineneLimonene and Mycerene.

The submissions were tested extensively by SC Labs, with trophies being awarded to contestants based on cannabinoid or terpene expression in each category. SC Labs provided reports detailing each of the awardees’ cannabinoid profiles, flavors, aromas and effects.

The winners of America’s first-ever, state-approved cannabis competition include MOCA Humboldt, Greenshock Farms, North Country Pharms, Mendocino Family Farm, Dry Farmed Organic Medicinals, Value Pure Farms and Gentleman’s Cut.  According to the cofounder of SC Labs Alec Dixon, developing award-winning cannabis takes plenty of skill, care and attention to detail during the drying, curing and preservation phases.

MOCA HumboldtGreenshock Farms and Esensia won the most awards, with MOCA Humboldt winning gold in several categories. Ridgeline Farms also scored a couple of wins and took home three silvers. Emerald Spirit Botanicals took gold in the outdoor Special Unique category for a THCV-rich cannabis train called Pink Boost Goddess.

Aaron Salles, the VP of marketing and sales at awardee MOCA Humboldt, says the company loves the fact that the competition took a science-based approach when evaluating cannabis products. He states that marijuana’s inclusion in the fair was a major win, helping to legitimize the industry and giving stakeholders a chance to educate the general public on the benefits associated with cannabis.

The awardees will be able to feature their award-winning cannabis products at an exhibit during the state fair, which will run from July 15–31.

With companies such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX) developing better ways to grow cannabis and other crops, the future competitions may be even closer as companies go all out to take the prized trophies home.

420 with CNW — Trial Suggests Marijuana Could Replace Opioids in Pain Management

As more states have opted to end cannabis prohibition and launch legal cannabis markets, there has been a growing body of literature indicating that the controversial plant can be effective against a variety of medical issues. Several studies have found that marijuana can be used to treat chronic pain, and plenty of people are already using the controversial plant as an alternative to pharmaceutical pain medications.

Now researchers currently working on a clinical trial to see whether cannabis can be used as an alternative to opioids in pain management have revealed that the pilot phase had “very promising” results. Run by Labat Africa, an investment holding company that trades on both the Frankfurt and JSE exchanges, the Pharma Ethics Observational Study will involve some 1,000 individuals who have been using opioids to manage chronic pain for at least three months.

In a notice to shareholders, Labat Africa said the opioid painkillers that were previously used by the participants included codeine, morphine and pethidine. Lead researcher Dr. Shiksa Gallow says the trials have been groundbreaking in giving much-needed insight between patient outcomes and marijuana genetics. Furthermore, the trials have provided enough evidence to show that cannabis can be used as an alternative to opioids when it comes to chronic pain management.

Gallow states that 98% of the study participants felt some sort of chronic pain relief after using cannabis. The researchers were even able to wean the patients off their opioid-based treatments, fixing an issue that plagues most patients that suffer from chronic pain conditions: opioid dependency. Gallow notes that participants under 55 years of age preferred to smoke the marijuana while those over 55 preferred the oil.

Unsurprisingly, the patients who smoked felt more immediate relief while those who used the oil had to wait for some time for the substance to take effect. Gallows states that once the researchers achieve the required sample size and collect all the relevant data, they will publish their findings. In the meantime, the research team has been able to extend the study for another year to allow them to recruit more participants.

The team is using cannabis strains, such as Exodus and Tallyman, that tend to work better against chronic pain conditions. According to Labat Africa, the team is planning to introduce the 9 Pound Hammer strain as it has high levels of THC, CBG and terpenes, such as myrcene and caryophyllene. Labat sources its cannabis strains from its Sweetwaters Aquaponics facility in the Eastern Cape.

It would be interesting to see how those premium cannabis strains would perform when grown in the micro gardens engineered by Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX) to maximize plant performance.

420 with CNW — Congressional Leaders Seek to Give Indian Tribes Cannabis Protections

Several congressional leaders are looking to include language that would protect Native American tribes from being penalized by the federal government for legalizing cannabis within their territories in a variety of funding bills.

In 2014, the federal government stated that tribes were allowed to grow and sell cannabis as long as they followed the same federal guidelines set for states that had legalized cannabis. The lawmakers now want it codified into law that the federal government cannot persecute Indian tribes that legalize cannabis within their territories.

More specifically, the new cannabis provision would forbid federal funds appropriated to agencies within the Justice, Interior Department, Office of Justice Services and Bureau of Indian Affairs from being used to enforce cannabis prohibition in Native American territories where marijuana is legal. The provision states that federal funds not be used in the enforcement of federal laws that criminalize the cultivation, distribution, possession and use of cannabis in Native American country.

The provision was attached to the base of the Department of the Interior’s fiscal year 2023 appropriations legislation and needs no further amendments. However, the cannabis protection provision states that there are two exceptions: first, federal funds can be used to interfere with cannabis activities in tribal territories that are located in states without legal markets, and second Native American tribes must make sure that their tribal marijuana laws prevent access by minors, keep cannabis from being used in organized criminal activity or the trafficking of other illicit drugs, and ensure there is no cannabis on federal public lands.

In the past, provisions that had been attached to appropriations bills for Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) that advanced past the House banned the use of federal funds in enforcing cannabis prohibition on tribal territories, but they did not have any nuance regarding different state laws nor did they offer any policy guidelines. Furthermore, none of these measures were codified into law even after advancing past the House.

Speaking at a press conference, Rep. Dave Joyce stated that it is unequivocally wrong to enforce federal cannabis laws on tribal land, especially in cases where the tribe and home state have both legalized marijuana. Joyce is a Congressional Cannabis Caucus cochair and a ranking member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.

He said misguided efforts to enforce federal cannabis policies on tribal land have left Native American tribes unsure if the federal government will continue enforcing federal cannabis policies on Native American reservations.

These tribes were sovereign nations, he noted, adding that they had the right to pass and enforce their own legislation.

Granting these protections removes a lot of concerns that people have about the risk of being penalized by the federal government for an action that is legal within the jurisdiction where they live. As these clarifications are codified, companies such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX) could see their sales of cultivation equipment jump.

420 with CNW — Congressmen Plead for Support for Medical Cannabis Bill for Veterans

A duo of bipartisan congressmen is seeking support for an upcoming bill that would increase military veterans’ access to medical cannabis. Although studies have found that medical cannabis can be effective at helping veterans deal with chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), federal policy makes it extremely difficult for veterans to access legal cannabis.

Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer and Republican Rep. Brian Mast are hoping to change this through their Veterans Equal Access Act. The bill would grant healthcare practitioners at the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) permission to recommend medical cannabis to patients in states with legal cannabis markets.

The two congressmen, cochairs of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, also shared a letter to other House offices asking those officials to support their bill because it would ensure that veterans had equal access to state-legal medical cannabis. The letter stated that while most state-legal medical cannabis programs will allow patients with a recommendation from a medical provider to enroll, VA policy bars Veteran Affairs doctors and care providers from taking part in medical cannabis programs, including helping veterans fill requisite forms.

This policy makes it virtually impossible for military veterans who could benefit a great deal from medical cannabis treatment to enroll in state-legal medical cannabis programs without having to seek medical care outside of the Veteran Affairs system, the letter stated. The policy often results in gaps in care, interrupts the continuity of care and forces veterans to pay for medical cannabis out of pocket.

The letter notes that VA clinicians shouldn’t be prohibited from recommending medical marijuana treatment to their patients if the veteran’s condition warrants it. Furthermore, it states that veterans shouldn’t be forced to leave the VA system just to access a medical treatment that is legal in their state.

The Veteran Access Act would give VA providers authorization to provide recommendations, offer their opinions on medical cannabis and help veterans complete forms pertaining to medical cannabis.

However, the letter noted that the upcoming legislation didn’t allow VA clinicians to dispense or prescribe patients with medical marijuana nor did it mean that they are required to provide recommendations and help with paperwork relating to medical marijuana programs. All the legislation does is allow VA clinicians to talk about medical cannabis candidly with their patients and offer recommendations and opinions that are in their best interests.

The letter also states that the legislation already has the support of several veteran and cannabis advocacy groups including NORML, Veterans Cannabis Coalition, Council for Federal Cannabis Regulation, Drug Policy Alliance, U.S. Cannabis Council, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IVAV).

It is unfortunate that veterans seem to be getting the short end of the stick when it comes to accessing medical marijuana while they deserve the best after serving their nation with utmost dedication. Modifying the discriminatory regulations would allow those who live in states where home grows are allowed to also grow their own cannabis, perhaps even using micro gardens such as those sold by Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX).

420 with CNW — Research Finds Weekly Use of Marijuana Doesn’t Compromise Physical Health

With dozens of states passing some form of cannabis legislation in the past decade, more people than ever are using marijuana for either medical or recreational purposes. According to recent research, regular cannabis use has a minimal effect on a user’s physical health. The study adds to the growing body of research on how marijuana affects pulmonarycardiovascular and other biological functions.

Since federal law has made it virtually impossible for researchers to study cannabis for the past few decades, most of the research on the effects of regular cannabis use is quite new.

This recent study, whose findings were reported in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal, sought to investigate the effect of regular (once a week) cannabis use on physical health. The results indicated that the plant didn’t have detrimental effects.

The research involved data from roughly 300 pairs of twins which was sourced from the University of Colorado Boulder’s “Colorado Adoption/Twin Study of Lifespan Behavioural Development and Cognitive Aging” study. This is an ongoing study of cognitive aging in twins from infancy to adulthood to determine how different influences in childhood and adulthood affect cognitive functioning. The researchers specifically tracked factors that influence declines, maintenance or boosts in cognitive abilities.

Jessica Megan Ross, the study’s lead researcher, and her team looked at how these factors affected dizygotic twins, who share 50% of their genes, and monozygotic twins, who share 100% of their genes. They also drew data from a larger study that has been assessing twins and siblings on a yearly basis from birth into early adulthood.

After analyzing the data, the researchers  found that the increased use of marijuana during adolescence wasn’t necessarily associated with reduced physical activity or exercise in adulthood. Furthermore, they found that increased use of cannabis as an adult isn’t necessarily associated with regular appetite loss either.

Comparing data between siblings showed that the frequent use of cannabis as a teen was associated with less exercise in adulthood.

However, the comparison of the pairs of monozygotic twins revealed that regular cannabis use in adulthood was associated with a lower resting heart rate, suggesting shared family factors could be responsible for the association between adolescent cannabis use and infrequent exercise in adulthood.

The researchers concluded that there was a minimal connection between using cannabis once a week and negative physical health outcomes for adults aged 25 to 35. They also noted that this didn’t apply to adolescents and adults who used cannabis more than once a week.

Ross added that while their research did not reveal a connection between regular cannabis use (once a week) and poor physical health, regular use could have side effects, including the development of a cannabis use disorder.

There is growing evidence that marijuana isn’t as bad as prohibitionists say it is, and such research findings may indirectly boost the sales of entities such as Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX), which makes equipment that can be used to grow cannabis and other plants.

Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (ACTX) GrowPods Strengthen Company’s Position in Growing Multibillion-Dollar Market

  • The global indoor farming market projected to grow from $26.5 billion in 2021 to $62 billion by 2030
  • Report indicates that United States holds major share in terms of revenue in North America indoor farming market
  • Grow Pods offered through ACTX provide a controlled environment, ability to grow year-round

The newest projections for the global indoor farming sector are in, and the numbers bode well for Advanced Container Technologies (OTC: ACTX). ACTX is the exclusive U.S. distributor of Grow Pods, environmentally controlled micro-farms that allow cultivation of ultra-clean crops all year long.

“The study undertaken by Astute Analytica foresees a tremendous growth in revenue of the market for the global indoor farming market from US$26.5 billion in 2021 to US$62 billion by 2030,” a recent PR Newswire report states (https://cnw.fm/sIUv2). “The market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 10.1% during the forecast period 2022–2030.

The article notes that indoor vertical farming is defined as the practice of growing produce stacked one above another in a closed, controlled environment. “Growing crops on vertically mounted shelves significantly reduces the amount of land space needed to grow plants compared to traditional farming methods,” the article observes.

“Vertical farms are unique in the sense that some setups do not require soil for plants to grow,” the article continues. “Most are either hydroponic, where vegetables are grown in a nutrient-dense bowl of water, or aeroponic, where the plant roots are systematically sprayed with water and nutrients. Moreover, vertical farms use smart sensors to monitor technical variables including temperature, carbon dioxide, oxygen, lighting, humidity, nutrient concentration, pH, pest control, irrigation and harvesting.”

The Astute Analytica report showed that the United States holds the major share in terms of revenue in the North America indoor farming market, with projections to grow with the highest CAGR during the forecast period. “Moreover, developed countries such as U.S. and Canada are the rapid and early adopters of indoor farming technologies,” the article said. “Furthermore, based on the growing system, the hydroponics segment holds the highest share in the North America indoor farming market in 2021 as it reduces the amount of space and water required for cultivation.”

Offering the ability to grow high-quality crops anywhere, the Grow Pods offered through Advanced Container Technologies provide a controlled environment and the ability to grow year-round. The micro-farms also enable cultivation in a smaller footprint using less resources — huge advantages in a world where environmental and sustainability concerns are top priorities for consumers.

In November 2020, ACTX announced that it had entered into an agreement with Grow Pods manufacturer GP Solutions for the exclusive right to market, sell and distribute GP products in the United States and its territories (https://cnw.fm/MZKeB). At the time of the agreement, GP Solutions president George Natzic stated that “we are very enthusiastic about this agreement and look forward to letting the experts at ACT handle sales and marketing while we focus on manufacturing new products, and expanding into new industries and territories.”

420 with CNW — Brazilian Superior Court Authorizes Home Cultivation of Marijuana for Medical Use

The wave of cannabis reform that began rocking the world when jurisdictions within the United States and countries such as Uruguay and Canada legalized marijuana in various forms has now arrived in Brazil. Earlier this week, a top Brazilian court gave a trio of patients authorization to grow their own cannabis at home for medical treatment. Although the country’s health ministry still hasn’t issued regulations for at-home cultivation of cannabis, this ruling may set a precedent that could be applied across the country.

A panel of five judges from the Brazil Superior Court of Justice all agreed that the medical marijuana patients in question should be allowed to grow marijuana at home and extract its oil to use as a pain medication. According to Judge Rogério Schietti, the government’s failure to issue scientific guidelines on the issue forced the panel’s hand. He called most of the arguments against cannabis reform “moralistic,” arguing that they tended to have a religious nature and were based on false truths and stigmas.

This sense of moralism has delayed the development of legislation to regulate at-home cultivation and clouded the minds of local judges. He emphasized that the country needed to end this prejudice against marijuana and take a scientific position on cannabis reform, not a religious one.

Judge Antonio Saldanha, another member of the panel, added that the government’s delay in issuing guidelines for at-home cultivation of medical cannabis was a conscious “backward step to obscurantism.” The country’s main health body, the Brazilian Agency Regulatory Agency (ANVISA), has denied requests to allow home cultivation on a number of occasions.

Two years ago, Daniel Law and the Cannigma reported that ANVISA had begun authorizing the import, manufacture and sale of cannabis-based medications as well as the commercialization of medical as well as recreational marijuana.  However, this seems to go against Brazilian law, which only allows imported cannabis products for medical use.

By law, only three companies are authorized to grow, harvest and handle medical marijuana. These companies include the Cannabis and Health Association, the Brazilian Cannabis Support Association Esperança and the Support for Medical Cannabis Research and Patients.

Last year, the country’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, declared that he did not support any efforts to authorize home cultivation of cannabis, even if it was for medical purposes. This is despite the fact that a prior survey from the International Drug Policy Consortium found that more than one-half (57%) of Brazilians were in favor of legalizing cannabis.

The authorization of cannabis home-grows for the patients who petitioned the court may open a deluge of interested parties that wish to leverage modern cannabis growing technologies and opportunities such as the grow pods sold by Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (OTC: ACTX).

Advanced Container Technologies Inc. (ACTX) GrowPods Have Potential to Help Millions Living in Food-Insecure Households

  • Tens of millions of adults, children are living in food-insecure households
  • Micro-farms, such as ACTX’s Grow Pods, are being evaluated as a potential solution for food insecurity
  • With GrowPods, cultivation can be moved directly into the areas where food is needed

An estimated 30 million adults and 12 million children are living in food-insecure households, reports a recent CNN Business article (https://cnw.fm/o1wn5). Those are people that Advanced Container Technologies (OTC: ACTX), the exclusive U.S. distributor of Grow Pods, believes it can help.

“Families across America are precariously perched on the edge of a hunger cliff,” reports CNN Business. “With inflation on the rise and supply chain backlogs, more families have been turning to food banks, forcing programs nationwide to ration supplies and cut services. And now the war in Ukraine is leading to more food shortages and driving up prices even further. Now is not the time to turn our backs on those who cannot afford to put food on the table.

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture (‘USDA’) has estimated that as many as 30 million adults and 12 million children are living in food-insecure households,” the CNN report continued. “And the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey found that in the last seven days, 10.3% of respondents sometimes or often did not have enough to eat. Local food aid organizations are essential community resources for families during this crisis, but they cannot do it all by themselves.”

Micro-farms, such as ACTX’s Grow Pods, are being evaluated as a potential solution for food insecurity. Last year, Virginia State University (“VSU”) was given a $600,000 grant to explore micro farms as a potential solution to what the school called “food deserts in urban neighborhoods” (https://cnw.fm/oGUed). According to the school, the grant will build VSU’s capacity to provide comprehensive education on micro farming.

Leonard Githinji, project director and sustainable and urban agriculture Cooperative Extension specialist at VSU, reports that more than 11% of the nation’s population and 10% of Virginia’s population are food insecure. “Residents in food-insecure areas, commonly known as food deserts, have little or no access to fresh, affordable and nutritious food, and often have higher instances of chronic diseases, such as obesity, due to poor diets,” Githinji states. “Developing sustainable micro farms in urban areas can have a profound impact on access to healthy food in food deserts.”

The funding will enhance VSU’s capacity to study micro farming and provide experiential learning and hands-on training to students, extension agents, master gardeners and youth leaders. Companies operating in the micro-farming space, such as Advanced Container Technologies, will also likely benefit from the study results. The three-year study will focus on developing and optimizing environmental growing conditions so that research-based information can be disseminated on best practices for micro farming.

ACTX is confident its GrowPods — modular hydroponic greenhouses — could become a valuable tool in efforts to combat food insecurity. “With GrowPods, cultivation can be moved directly into the areas where food is needed,” the company noted (https://cnw.fm/Fwx5Y). “Additionally, locating the pods nearer to the point of consumption allows food to be harvested at its peak nutritional value, and greatly reduces the carbon and environmental impact of the nation’s current food chain, which relies on trucks carrying mass quantities of produce across the country.”

GrowPods offer a controlled environment with major advantages for the production of high-value crops. The ability to grow crops year-round while cultivating in a smaller footprint using less resources make the systems particularly well suited for programs such as the LFPA. ACTX is the exclusive distributor of GrowPods in certain markets. The company also provides a variety of other products and services, including packaging solutions for medicinal, pharmaceutical, and agricultural products.
