420 with CNW – Canadian Moms Come Together Against Marijuana Stigma

Canadian mothers who are also marijuana consumers have been complaining that they are criticized more than dads who are weed consumers. In the past few months, several organizations have been established to provide mothers with a safe place to discuss marijuana and reduce stigma surrounding moms who use marijuana.

Before the legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada, Shannon Chiarenza from Vancouver started an attack on stigma against moms who are marijuana users by launching a website known as Weed Mama. Chiarenza’s website gives parents and women information about marijuana, product reviews, and offers them a community where weed consuming mothers can discuss issues affecting them.

Since Chiarenza launched her website, there has been an upsurge of activity of women following in her footsteps, who are hoping to eradicate the stigma surrounding marijuana and motherhood.

Natasha Albert is a mother of two, and she resides in Saskatoon. Albert started recording a podcast called Smoke Rings with Aquarius after she was criticized for using medical marijuana. Her podcast will start airing before the end of January.

Speaking to a major TV channel, Albert said that she uses medical marijuana to treat her depression, which helps her to be a better parent and be involved more with her kids.

Riley Parratt, a single mom, residing in Kingston, Ontario, and her friend Hollie Quinn, a mother and medical marijuana user living in Orangeville founded a Facebook page called Canadian 420 Moms. Quinn has been using medical marijuana for several years to manage epilepsy, depression, and anxiety.

Parratt said that we are in an era where it is socially acceptable for a mother to have a glass of wine; thus, it should also be acceptable for mothers to consume marijuana.

Parratt further said that she was upset by the assumption that mothers who are marijuana users cannot function as a parent after using marijuana. She noted that marijuana helps take the edge off and that they can work like everyone else.

Coming out as a marijuana user for moms may threaten their jobs at their workplace, friendships, and family support. Marijuana stigma surrounding mothers also affects their children’s friendships, said Quinn.

Quinn further said that at the park, kids whose mothers are marijuana users are not allowed to play with other kids nor at their homes.

However, the judgment for consuming marijuana affects women from all walks of life, whether they have kids or not, and it is not fair. She strongly feels that this stigma should come to an end.

Industry watchers assert that the efforts of such women trying to end stigma against mothers who legally use marijuana enjoys the moral support of marijuana companies like Willow Biosciences Inc. (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) since Canadian law allows adults and patients, regardless of their gender, to consume marijuana.

420 with CNW – Cuomo Vows to Legalize Recreational Weed in New York in 2020

Most of the states in America where marijuana is not legal are looking to change that by legalizing either medical or recreational marijuana in 2020. Although the legalization of marijuana at the federal level was not successful in 2019, this year, it might be possible. Last year, New York did not succeed in legalizing marijuana; but this year, the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo promised to legalize marijuana.

In his annual State of the State address on Wednesday, Gov. Cuomo said that the criminal justice reform is long overdue because, for decades, people of color have been disproportionately terrorized by the war against drugs. He also noted that it is high time New York legalizes recreational marijuana.

Cuomo feels that legalizing marijuana could bring in more than $300 million a year in tax revenues and billions of dollars more in economic activity if the marijuana program is implemented correctly.

Cuomo further said that he would work on marijuana plans in collaboration with other states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He also noted that the university system in New York state should be allowed to conduct additional studies on cannabis and its effects.

As per the current cannabis law in New York, marijuana products meant for recreational use should not contain more than 0.3% of THC. The state has also decriminalized simple marijuana possession. New York legalized cannabis for medical use in 2014, and for patients to get access to medical marijuana, they are required to submit a certificate from a registered medical marijuana physician. Medicinal marijuana products are available in the form of capsules, liquids and CBD oil.

The state expanded its medical marijuana program by allowing more marijuana products such as chewable and effervescent tablets and lozenges, as well as ointments, topical creams, and transdermal patches.

There is a huge demand for marijuana in the U.S., and when consumers do not want to smoke, they can try using edibles. Edibles include gummies, chocolate, brownies, and beverages. There are 40 dispensaries which are open and serving medical marijuana patients in the state. The cultivation of marijuana at home by marijuana patients is prohibited.

Being an important state in the U.S., New York would provide a vast recreational marijuana consumer base for companies producing marijuana products.

This year more U.S. states, such as Utah and Virginia, will attempt to legalize marijuana and New York doesn’t want to be left behind. It would be eye-opening to hear what weed-related companies like Willow Biosciences Inc. (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) and Dama Financial may recommend as ways to overcome the obstacles that prevented the previous legalization bill from getting sufficient support last year.

420 with CNW – Why Weed Makes You Hungry

People tend to eat more after using marijuana because several separate mechanisms come together to invoke marijuana-induced appetite.

One of the mechanisms appeals to our taste buds as it makes everything yummy, while another mechanism makes us crave candy and junk food, and when the two mechanisms are bound together, they make us hungry even when full.

Talking about how marijuana induces hunger is a bit complex; therefore, to make sure that everyone understands, let us break it down into several sections that are easy to understand.

The Olfactory Bulb

This is a part of the brain that is involved in olfaction, which is a process that establishes our sense of smell.

A study conducted on animals in 2014 revealed that after consuming weed, the THC molecules bind themselves to the cellular receptors of the olfactory bulb, which enhances an individual’s sense of smell. This in turn intensifies fragrances and aromas.

Your sense of smell is closely linked with your sense of taste, providing you with a pleasurable eating experience, since food is made much yummier. Consequently, you are more likely to get the munchies once you consume weed and this part of your brain is activated.

Dopamine and Lowered Inhibitions

THC increases the levels of dopamine and lowers our inhibitions, causing some of the unhealthy food choices amongst weed consumers. This forces you to eat food you would not be otherwise caught eating, and regret hits later after the high has worn off.

The Ghrelin Hormone

In 2018, Washington State University researchers conducted a study in which they exposed rats to marijuana vapor and then observed their eating habits. The study findings showed that THC triggered a surge of the ghrelin hormone, which is responsible for signaling the brain that an organism is hungry; thus, influencing it to look for food despite it being full. This study shows what humans experience when they are high on weed and develop the urge to eat.

POMC Neurons

In 2015, researchers conducted a study on marijuana and hunger, where they found that under the influence of marijuana, POMC neuron cells in the hypothalamus alter their function.

The hypothalamus is a brain segment that links the nervous system with the endocrine system. It is responsible for hunger, thirst, circadian rhythm, sleep, and body temperature. The researchers found that under the influence of marijuana, the POMC neurons, which are responsible for sensing when one is full, shift their functions and instead detects starvation. This sends you looking for what to eat.

When one is full, POMC neurons secrete the alpha-MSH compound, which is responsible for satiety sensation, but under the influence of weed, the neurons secrete a beta-endorphin compound, which is responsible for stimulating appetite irrespective of one being full.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)

There are marijuana strains that contain high levels of THCV, which diminishes appetite. Therefore, consumers should strive to acquire products that are rich in THCV to counter the effects of THC-induced hunger-pangs.

Therapeutic Significance

For the majority of recreational weed consumers, marijuana-induced hunger is a nuisance, but for people undergoing chemotherapy, marijuana-induced hunger is much welcome because their treatment reduces their desire and ability to eat. The muchies aren’t therefore n entirely bad thing, depending on your needs.

This could perhaps be the reason why weed companies, such as ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (TSX: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), always recommend that people talk to their doctor before consuming any cannabis product.

420 with CNW – Study Finds People Have More Sex When Medical Marijuana is Legalized

A recent study by the University of Connecticut and Georgia State University found that medical marijuana legalization seems to be encouraging people to engage more in sexual activities. The researchers also found that since medical marijuana policies were enacted, there has been a decrease in the consumption of contraceptives, and an increase in the number of children born.

To figure out how marijuana laws influence sexual activity in people, the researchers analyzed data collected between 1997 and 2011. The analyzed data included responses to questions about sexual activities and drug consumption. The poll asked the participants about their cannabis consumption and sex frequency.

After analyzing the data, the researchers found that there was a 4.3% increase in the likelihood of the respondents participating in sexual activities in the past one month once a medical marijuana law was enacted and an increase in sex immediately after the law change.

The change in marijuana laws caused a two percent increase in the number of births, which means that each quarter there are more than 684 births for all women who can bear children.

The authors wrote that the results of the analysis provide evidence of the fact that marijuana consumption has a significant, unplanned, and positive impact on the number of children born. The paper was published in the Journal of Health Economics in December 2019.

The researchers also touch on the sensory impact of marijuana. Weed consumption alters people’s attitudes towards risky behaviors, making them less concerned about the outcome of sexual activities, and this possibly results in the reduced use of contraceptives.

The alteration of people’s behaviors explains the reason behind increased birthrates when people have access to medical marijuana even though the study authors explained that weed has physiological effects that could cause a decrease in fertility.

The researchers further wrote that the increase in the birthrate might be attributed to the fact that behavioral factors can override the physiological effects of marijuana consumption.

The study concludes that the enactment of medical marijuana laws leads to increased sexual activity and reduced use of contraceptives amongst sexually active individuals. These behavioral responses may be due to the effects of enhanced attention on sexual contact after weed consumption and the willingness to participate in sexual activities as well as ignoring the outcome of engaging in any sexual activity.

A recent survey conducted by Lioness showed that marijuana could intensify sexual pleasure and increase libido for both men and women.

Experts say that the stufy findings highlight the far-reaching benefits of marijuana that sector players like Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) hint at as they recommend the full legalization of pot.

420 with CNW – New Jersey Lawmakers Approve 2020 Marijuana Legalization Referendum

On Monday, the majority of New Jersey lawmakers approved the 2020 ballot question seeking to legalize recreational marijuana, meaning that the voters are the ones to decide on marijuana legalization during the 2020 elections.

The ballot question was passed by 49-24 votes in the Democrat-led Assembly, while in the Senate, the measure was approved by 24-16 votes.

Although Governor Phil Murphy is in favor of marijuana legalization, it is not a must for the proposal to go before him.

The approved question asks the voters if they approve the consumption and possession of adult-use marijuana by people above the age of 21. It also states that marijuana products would be subjected to a state sales tax of 6.625% and the towns could choose to pass ordinances to impose local taxes.

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said that the time has come for America to end prohibition for recreational cannabis.

Once the voters approve the marijuana reform during the 2020 elections, New Jersey will become the 11th state to legalize recreational pot along with the District of Columbia. Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana.

After Governor Murphy and the legislative leaders failed to advance the marijuana legalization legislation in March, they settled for placing the decision in the hands of voters. The lawmakers who were opposed to the measure voiced several issues concerning the legislation, which include the fear that some former marijuana convicts could get their records cleared effortlessly. Both sides of the political divide had members who were opposed to the policy at the time.

After the recreational marijuana legislation failed to garner enough support to advance in the House, supporters accepted for it to be placed on the ballot. However, they were worried that once the question was placed on the ballot, the lawmakers would abandon their responsibility of addressing racial and social injustices on the people of color as well as the increased rate of prosecution of marijuana possession among the disproportionately affected communities.

The executive director of the state’s American Civil Liberties Union, Amol Sinha, said that the principle of representation and participatory democracy is being undermined by a constitutional amendment requesting the voters to make a decision first and find out the details of the legislation later.

The legislation question will be put on the 2020 ballot after more than three-fifths majority in the House and the Senate approve. Once it is passed, a second vote would be made by the lawmakers during the new legislative session starting on January 14.

It remains to be seen what cannabis companies, such as Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) and Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF), think about this new plan to end cannabis prohibition in New Jersey.

Willow Biosciences (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), an emerging biotechnology company focused on the biosynthetic production of cannabinoids, is well positioned to disrupt the cannabis industry supply chain by utilizing its ability to provide biosynthetically derived cannabinoids. A recent article discussing the company reads, “Willow ultimately intends to biosynthetically produce a variety of cannabinoids using biosynthesis, but its first target molecule will be CBD. The company has a fully integrated leadership team based out of Canada and the United States to handle all stages of the upstream cannabinoid development cycle. Additionally, by having two labs in Canada, where cannabis is federally legal, Willow is able to access and work with the cannabis plant to allow its team to make significant discoveries outside of what is known today. 420 with CNW – Why You Should Be Cautious About Telling Police You Use Weed

The law enforcement agencies are still arresting people for using or possessing marijuana despite its legal stature in many jurisdictions around the country, and some of these arrests are brought about by personal admission of use or possession to the police.

People are under the impression that it is okay to admit that they are using marijuana since it is legal in many states in the U.S. Others assume that since marijuana is legalized, the rules associated with the plant are not applicable, so they end up throwing caution to the wind as you find them leaving their homes with marijuana. Most often, this leads to trouble, especially if the police are involved.

Although marijuana is not totally prohibited in the U.S., the police forces are still finding excuses to arrest people on marijuana-related cases, and most often, the arrests are due to personal admission.

Earlier this week, Detroit News reported that hours after the launch of recreational marijuana sales, a motorist crashed with a Michigan police vehicle. Although the cause of the accident was the poor nature of the road, after been questioned severally about the accident, the motorist said that he had smoked pot during the day. Speaking to the news outlet, the State Police Lieutenant, Sarah Krebs, noted that the motorist admitted to smoking weed before that accident, and this shows that the driver was driving under the influence. The evidence was sufficient to have him sent to jail, according to the police.

The accident happened along interstate 75. The driver was too fast despite the poor road infrastructure, which caused him to spin and crash into a police vehicle. If an accident takes place even if there are no people who are injured, the police must investigate to determine if the drivers were impaired. If a motorist is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, the police make use of a breathalyzer to either verify or eliminate the suspicion.

However, law enforcement officers in states where marijuana is legal are determined to pin accidents on stoned driving. Recreational marijuana sales becomes legal in Illinois in January, and the police force in the state is on a rampage to arrest stoned drivers before legal sales begin. The only downside is that the absence of roadside test tools, such as breathalyzers, used for detecting impaired drivers makes it harder to prove impairment.

The suspects are instead subjected to a blood test for confirmation, and for this to happen, you would have to be reeking of weed, with bloodshot eyes and irrational behavior before the cops pull you aside.

A driver should never admit to smoking marijuana because if you do, you will be subjected to a blood test, and if it is positive, you will be charged with impaired driving. You will then be placed in the county jail until you are bailed out. Admission of guilt will make arguing your case before a judge challenging, and you will probably be convicted of a DUI. You will also lose your driver’s license.

According to a defense attorney in California, Robert Shatzco, people should never admit to smoking weed since it is difficult for the police to determine if you are impaired. He also said that they are helping clients get their cases dismissed or get them a reduced charge.

Experts think that such potential legal traps may explain why many marijuana companies, such as MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), invest heavily in educating people about using cannabis responsibly.

CBDNewsBreaks – Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF) Comments on DEA Descheduling Partner’s CBD

Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), a Canadian biotechnology company and a leading developer in biosynthetically produced cannabidiol (“CBD”), this morning issued a release commenting on the recent news that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”) has removed Purisys, LLC’s CBD from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (“CSA”). Purisys, the spin-out entity of Noramco, Inc.’s cannabinoids business, began operating as a stand-alone entity on October 1, 2019 and is expected to become independent from Noramco on January 1, 2020. Per the terms of a joint development agreement, Noramco is Willow’s exclusive manufacturing and distribution partner. Willow holds an informal partnership with Purisys through the agreement as well. “The descheduling of our partner Purisys’ CBD from the CSA signals a fundamental change in how the regulatory bodies in the United States view ultra-pure CBD,” Willow Biosciences president and CEO Trevor Peters stated in the news release. “At Willow, we have always maintained the view that as the market for CBD continues to unfold in the United States there will be an increased amount of oversight into the quality of the manufacturing process in addition to the specifications around the molecule itself. The partnership strives to produce ingredients that are of the highest quality and consistency. As we move towards commercialization of CBD, we believe a significant portion of the pharmaceutical and consumer products industries will desire the ultra-pure, consistent, and cost-effective ingredients that the partnership will be able to provide.”

420 with CNW – DEA Puts Final Touches to 2020 Marijuana Cultivation Plans

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) plans for authorizing the cultivation of 3.2 million grams of marijuana for research purposes in the 2020 planting season has been finalized. The 3.2 million grams is a 30% increase from 2019.

In September, the DEA published a notice in the Federal Register which proposed the 3.2 million grams production of weed. The final notice to be released includes the sentiments of the people collected during the public comment period, which were from the health care providers, the general public, and state and federal officials.

Most of the comments focused on the proposed reduction of opioid production by the DEA, citing that this could result in a shortage in the prescription, which could impact the patients negatively.

However, the DEA still decreased production quotas for certain opioids such as oxymorphone and oxycodone. The initial production of Oxycodone was 72, 593,983 grams, but the DEA reduced the final quota to 67,593,983 grams.

The marijuana production quota did not change at the end of the public comment timeline.

According to the DEA, the quota represents the estimated medical, scientific, study, and industrial needs of the U.S. for legal export requirements, and the establishment and preservation of reserve stock. The DEA further said that there has been an increase in demand for research-grade cannabis, and more states are legalizing marijuana for medical or adult-use purposes.

In the initial notice, compared to 2017, the number of agencies registered with the DEA to conduct marijuana research or on its derivatives, extracts, and THC has increased by 40% in 2019. In 2017, the number of registered agencies was 384, and by January 2019, the number had risen to 542.

Despite the increase in the marijuana production quota and the number of registered researchers, there is only one marijuana cultivation facility that is authorized by the federal government, the University of Mississippi farm. Three years have passed since the DEA said that it would approve additional manufacturers of research marijuana, but it is yet to take action.

This summer, scientists filed a lawsuit against the DEA, arguing that it is using delaying tactics and failing to fulfill its duties of approving more than 24 applications for federally approved marijuana growers.

In August, the DEA made an announcement saying that due to the overwhelming number of applications, the agency had developed alternative regulations for processing the applications. This resulted in the dismissal of the lawsuit before the federal court since the agency was taking the necessary measures to resolve the issue brought before court.

Researchers and legislators also said that the University of Mississippi farm does not have all the marijuana products being traded on the market. Some of the marijuana contains lower levels of THC and other cannabinoids, which undermines the quality of the studies.

According to one study, the chemical composition of marijuana from federal farms was closer to that of hemp than of other marijuana available on the market, and this made it more urgent to license additional producers for research-grade marijuana.

Industry watchers are certain that marijuana companies, such as Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), may have preferred that the federal agency announces additional producers so that the larger production quota can avail the quality of marijuana needed by researchers.
