420 with CNW — Why Investors Interested in Cannabis Should Expect a Big Stock Surge

At the moment, more than 100 million residents in the United States live in a state that has legalized recreational cannabis, with a whopping 95% living in a state with a legal medical cannabis system in place. Cannabis multistate operators are readying themselves for the next huge stock increase, which is expected to happen even without a change in federal legislations.

Marijuana is fast closing the revenue gap, especially with the emergence of profitability, after the huge infrastructure spending that began in 2018 and 2019. Trading indexes show favorable valuations throughout this season, despite the imminent federal legislative gridlock.

Marijuana revenues in the United States increased significantly between 2014 and 2020, moving from $1.9 billion to $17.5 billion, even without the enactment of federal legislations such as the SAFE Banking Act. Recent forecasts from “Forbes” show that by 2025, the U.S. marijuana market will have reached $43 billion, which is quite a jump from the $29 billion prediction from a few months ago.

With more states across the country legalizing the herb for recreational and/or medicinal use, 2021 is set to be a good year, with the cannabis market expected to see an even larger increase in the coming year. Additionally, as more demographics such as seniors get on board with marijuana therapies, the industry expands faster and grows even stronger.

The quality of companies now operating in the marijuana market is considerably different from companies that were operating in the market in 2015 when the U.S. Marijuana Index begun. Small companies are now focused on profit making, which entails starving multistate operators of capital markets with profitability also being the main objective of larger and better-developed multistate operators.

Infrastructure building as well as mergers and acquisitions have also increased substantially, with both global and U.S. capital markets responding to this by increasing their cannabis services. The United States is receiving the biggest benefit of private equity financing because of the increased fundamentals of cannabis companies and the huge revenue stream that’s gaining momentum.

Whether we like it or not, the profitability model brought by marijuana federal legalization in Canada is here to stay. Despite most monies being injected into companies in the United States, investing in profitable operations is still the main aim, especially as infrastructure and M&A investments are expected to increase annually in this particular market.

Until federal regulations catch up to consumer preferences, marijuana sales will continue increasing, more states will legalize the herb, and companies will continue to hit record highs.

When you see industry players such as Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF) report nearly 200 people on their payroll, it appears to be a clear sign that the sector is growing and things are likely to keep looking up for years to come.

420 with CNW – How Cannabis Cultivators Are Using Tech to Boost Productivity, Reduce Costs

Hemp and marijuana growers are using advanced technologies to increase quality and yields, cut down on labor costs, and decrease water as well as optimize energy use. These technologies, which also help make cultivation facilities more productive, include products to control pests that don’t use chemical pesticides, smartphone-controlled technology to raise and lower lighting and LED bulbs, systems that control a grow-room environment remotely, and sensors to fine-tune lighting and control irrigation.

Some companies use sensors that enable cultivation operation managers to assess soil moisture using a software that can be viewed on a smartphone or computer. For instance, the director of cultivation at the Source in Las Vegas stated that his company recently began using grow-media water sensors that assist him in deciding when to irrigate the plants.

The director; Bill Campbell, revealed that the sensors, which cost no more than $100, notified him when they detected that some plants lacked sufficient water. Campbell noted that since the Source began using the sensors, water usage had dropped by more than 50%, adding that nearly 300 gallons of water are saved daily. The use of these sensors, he notes, has also increased cannabinoid and terpene production as well as the company’s yields.

Another vertically integrated cannabis and hemp firm, HillviewMed, is also using a system that has sensors which collect plant data. The data plays a crucial part in the company’s business strategy as it can be used to make various decisions including how much light the plants should get. Hillview CEO Kenneth Vandevrede notes that the data is a key tool in the company’s growth.

Chalice Farms’ director of cultivation Derek Rayhorn revealed that the data collected by its automated grow system helps in budgeting. The company uses technology that incorporates anemometers, humidistats and temperature sensors. He adds that the technology also allows him to remotely make adjustments to the system and monitor it.

LED lighting is also growing popular among cannabis growers, with the CEO of The Green Solution Steve Lopez revealing that the use of these lights has doubled plant sizes. Lopez adds that the company has also saved a lot on the energy side, noting that the company may soon hit their maximum yield and maximum potential.

SugarTop Buddery’s CEO Anna Kaplan is also using technology that doesn’t rely on chemicals to exterminate pests. The system in use at its Oregon facility creates a natural formulation with anti-pathogen, antifungal and antiviral properties, which is said to be very effective at killing pests.

Chalice Farms, and Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF) in general, is showing other industry players how beneficial it can be to use the latest and most innovative tech during the cultivation of marijuana for medical or recreational use.

420 with CNW — A BHO and CO2 Cannabis Extraction Comparison

Despite being prohibited, cannabis has been immensely popular over the past couple of decades. Cannabis proved to be a lucrative space once territories began legalizing the substance for medical and recreational use, but things blew up once cannabis concentrates hit the market. Thanks to constantly improving technology, processors are now able to pull cannabinoids from the plant, creating high-potency cannabis products that have enjoyed major sales.

Extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from hemp and cannabis is an insanely complex process, with the most common extraction methods thus far being butane hash oil (“BHO”) and carbon dioxide (“CO2”) extraction.

BHO, which is a solvent-based extraction method, uses a light hydrocarbon solvent called butane to strip cannabis plants of their resin. Although this method dates back to the 1970s, it can be dangerous because butane is highly flammable, thus requiring specialized training as well as closed-loop equipment for extraction. Closed loop refers to a system that pulls compounds from the cannabis in a completely airtight environment.

If done correctly and under the proper conditions, BHO can produce extracts with up to 90% THC, resulting in high-potency products that can be used for edibles, vaping and topical treatments, among others. Carbon dioxide extraction, on the other hand, uses pressurized CO2 to pull compounds from cannabis. Most of the cannabis oil used in vape cartridges is extracted via CO2 extraction. Like BHO extraction, carbon dioxide extraction requires the use of specialized equipment, and amateurs with no training are advised to avoid both of these extraction methods.

Due to the complexity and newness of BHO and CO2 extraction in the cannabis industry, a lot of people don’t know much about them. For instance, there seems to be a misconception about butane hash leaving residual solvents and producing impure extracts with an unpleasant taste, which is false. In fact, carbon dioxide extraction often uses a second solvent to winterize or crystallize the extract, which has to be removed later on. As a result, extracts made via this process also run the risk of contamination. Additionally, carbon dioxide extraction can be especially dangerous as CO2 extraction systems operate under extremely high pressures, ranging from 1,500-8,700 PSI.

As long as both methods are implemented by trained individuals using the right equipment and in controlled environments, the resultant extract will be quite safe to consume. However, note that there will be slight product differences. Since CO2 extraction calls for a lot of post processing, it may have a reduced natural flavor and a different consistency. It will also take longer compared to BHO processing, which has less post-processing steps. Due to the complexity and equipment required for these extraction methods, consumers should leave extraction to the experts and stick to easier alternatives such as cannabutter and cannaoil.

Consumers are encouraged to stick to high-quality cannabis extracts made by some of the leading companies in the industry, such as Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), to avoid putting themselves and others at risk while trying to DYI their own extracts.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF) Advocates for Temperature-Fighting Cannabis to Beat Record Heat

Chalice Brands (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), a consumer-driven cannabis company in the medicinal and recreational marijuana market segments, is building a strong presence in Oregon. This presence allows interested Oregonians to test the cannabis cooling theory captured in a Chalice magazine article titled “Cannabis Is Cool.” The theory states that: “Cannabinoids, compounds found in cannabis, can interact with the hypothalamus and endocannabinoid system and subsequently impact temperature regulation while also occupying the vanilloid receptor family (TRPA-1, TRPM8, etc.). . . . Thanks to our interest in cannabis, we know the vanilloid receptors alter our perception of heat and pain and, therefore when also engaged by cannabinoids, may numb our sensation of heat and feeling hot.” The article came as the West was experiencing record heat levels, with temperatures topping 100 degrees in California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. While Chalice calls for people to be reasonable and intelligent adults by making sure they drink water and finding shade or air conditioning, the company also offers this suggestion: “Beat the heat this summer with temperature-fighting cannabis. . . . If this is another excuse to consume a little bit more cannabis, we’ll take it!”

420 with CNW — 10 Senators Urge Feds to Grant Cannabis Firms Access to SBA Loans

America’s state legal cannabis industry has been dubbed one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, but its federal classification has been a constant hindrance. While more than 30 states allow either medical or recreational cannabis, the federal government still classifies marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance. Consequently, banks and financial institutions do not transact with businesses in the cannabis space, and, in many cases, they won’t even work with businesses that are indirectly connected to cannabis.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and the resultant financial crisis, a group of senators has urged the federal government to grant cannabis firms access to financial aid. In a letter sent to the Appropriations Committee leaders, 10 senators have asked that language allowing cannabis firms to access financial aid via the federal Small Business Administration (SBA) be added to a soon-to-be unveiled spending bill document. This would see businesses in the cannabis space finally access SBA loans as well as disaster assistance as the country and world at large recovers from the worst financial downturn in a century.

Federal relief would help alleviate the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, the senators wrote. Led by Sen. Jacky Rosen, the group was comprised of Senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Jeff Merkley, Maria Cantwell, Ed Markey, Ron Wyden, Bob Menendez, Alex Padilla and Raphael Warnock. The group sent the letter to the heads of the Appropriations Financial Services and General Government (“FSGG”) and the Senate Appropriations Committee asking that the federal aid language to be appended within the FSGG spending bill document for the fiscal year 2022.

The letter also requested that state legal cannabis businesses be allowed access to the Loan Guarantee, Microloan, Disaster Assistance and the 504/Certified Development Company Loan Programs. The SBA currently excludes businesses that are directly or indirectly involved with the cultivation, production and sale of cannabis products, the letter says, and this places undue and unfair pressures on small enterprises operating in states with legal cannabis markets.

Additionally, the letter mentions that banks do not transact with cannabis businesses because they fear repercussions from the federal government. As such, these cannabis operations mostly operate on a cash-only basis, which puts them at a high risk of robberies and burglaries. Additionally, the coronavirus can survive for quite a while on paper money, putting workers in the cannabis space as well as their clientele at risk of infection.

It would be good for the entire marijuana industry, including sector players such as Chalice Brands Inc. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), if companies in the industry were given the same access to federal business loans as do companies in other industries. Such a gesture would mean that the state-legal marijuana industry was being accorded equal treatment with other industries.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Chalice Brands Ltd. (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF) Releases Statement Regarding Passing of Oregon Cannabis Omnibus Bill

Chalice Brands (CSE: CHAL) (OTCQB: CHALF), a premier consumer-driven cannabis company specializing in retail, production, processing, wholesale, and distribution, announced that it “celebrates” the Oregon Senate’s passing of the SB408 Cannabis Omnibus Bill. According to the company, the bill represents a major step toward modernizing Oregon’s cannabis regulations to create a better business environment for the industry and further aligns Oregon’s cannabis regulations with the reality of today’s industry. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed the bill into law on June 29, 2021. Chalice Brands noted that it is also a supporter of the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act discussion draft that was proposed on July 14, 2021, which aims to de-schedule cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act. “We applaud the coalition of cannabis associations and the OLCC for engaging in this critical process to support businesses and protect public health and safety,” said Chalice Brands president and CEO Jeff Yapp in the press release. “The collaborative effort on this bill demonstrates the much-needed common sense legislative updates to elevate the industry and further cements Oregon as the cannabis market leader. Chalice is motivated by the passing of SB408 and will look to leverage what we believe to be a significant growth catalyst for many cannabis businesses operators in Oregon. The legacy of the war on drugs has unfairly impacted minorities; even as states legalize cannabis, it is long overdue for the federal government to undo decades of failed drug policy. We believe the proposed bill is a clear testament to a better path forward to begin righting these wrongdoings.”
