420 with CNW – Marijuana Businesses Plead to Access Federal Coronavirus Business Relief

A little over two months after the novel Coronavirus first appeared in Wuhan, China, it has spread to every continent except Antarctica and left over 10,000 people dead in its wake. The World Health Organization has declared the virus a pandemic, and it’s safe to say most of us haven’t experienced anything of this magnitude in our lifetimes. Fearing an outbreak of black plague proportions, most countries have been going into lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus.

However, while social distancing and self-isolation have been found to be the best preventive measures, the long term effect it could have on the economy is catastrophic, especially if the lockdowns last a while. Businesses all over the country are already feeling the pinch, and to help alleviate this, the U.S. federal government has pledged to provide financial assistance to keep the economy going in these trying times.

This has left the cannabis industry between a rock and a hard place. Cannabis businesses are required to comply with Coronavirus related measures that will without a doubt affect their cash flows, but since cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, they will not have access to federal business relief. On Friday, a coalition of major cannabis industry associations sent a letter to the leaders of the House and Senate asking them to ensure cannabis businesses qualify for assistance.

“Our members follow strict regulations, create jobs, generate millions of dollars in tax revenue, including federal corporate tax revenue, and act as good corporate citizens, yet it appears as if these businesses will not be eligible for the same loans available to other businesses in this country at rush due to the global pandemic,” states the letter.

It was jointly sent by the National Cannabis Industry Association, National Cannabis Roundtable, Minority Cannabis Business Association, Global Alliance for Cannabis Commerce and Cannabis Trade Federation.

“The ineligibility of cannabis businesses for disaster assistance loans is especially inequitable given that these same cannabis businesses are required to comply with other Coronavirus related measures. We are not seeking special treatment for state-legal cannabis businesses. We only seek to have them treated on an equal level as all other job-generating, tax-paying companies in this country.”

Non-profit group NORML has suggested that the Families First Coronavirus Response Act could help extend some benefits to the legal marijuana industry which employs an estimated 240,000 people in the U.S. Signed into law this week, the act directs federal funds to state governments to help them deal with the pandemic.

After conferring with experts, NORML believes the act “provides the individual states with authority to decide for themselves which industries are legally eligible to receive benefits.”

The group has stated that it will “continue to work with our federal allies to call for an end for such discriminatory practices against the cannabis industry and those whose livelihoods depend upon it.”

Analysts agree that cannabis sector players like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX) are feeling the full impact of the economic slowdown resulting from the Coronavirus outbreak, so it is only fair that any relief available to other industries should also be accessible by the legal marijuana industry.

420 with CNW – The Marijuana Industry Has Already Created More Than 250,000 Jobs

Marijuana is quite a divisive topic. For the most part, most opinions are split down the middle, with people being either for or against legal marijuana. There’s a lot you can say in defense of marijuana, such as its diverse range of medical applications to the fact that it doesn’t have the side effects pharmaceuticals are known for. However, marijuana’s ability to create employment is almost unparalleled.

According to Leafly’s annual Cannabis Jobs Report, there were 240,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs supported by the legal cannabis industry as of January 2020, a 15% increase from 2019. This translates to 33,700 new jobs in 2019 alone, with Illinois, Oklahoma, and Massachusetts enjoying the most cannabis industry job growth.

Coupled with a projected growth rate of 250% between 2018 and 2028, this makes legal marijuana the fastest growing industry in America, surpassing even the most in-demand tech jobs. However, the fact that marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, and is subject to a patchwork of state legislation, complicates matters.

“There are now nearly a quarter of a million Americans whose professional lives are categorized as illegal or non-existent by the government of the United States,” the report states. “That is outrageous.”

Massachusetts saw an increase of 10,226 jobs and Oklahoma added more than 7,300 jobs. Illinois’s legal marijuana market opened just this year for sales, and it has seen explosive growth in the short period, with 9,176 new jobs being created. The report ranked the state tenth in marijuana jobs in the country.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a variety of other white-collar professions have also sprouted around the legal marijuana industry, including attorneys specializing in cannabis law as well as doctors and other medical professionals who treat medical cannabis patients.

Dr. Rahul Khare, for instance, is a former emergency physician who has been treating medical cannabis patients at his Lincoln Park urgent care center. “I didn’t ever think cannabis would ever be legal in medical school. I never thought I’d be using cannabis as a medication,” he says.

Florida, on the other hand, has a massive market for medical marijuana, with more than 300,000 medical marijuana patients. According to a 2019 study by New Frontier Data, Florida’s adult-use market may make up 12% of the national cannabis market and employ 128,000 by 2025 if recreational marijuana becomes legal.

Experts say that this huge explosion of marijuana jobs gives credence to what industry actors, such as ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX), have always said about the economic and other benefits of legalizing cannabis at all levels.

420 with CNW – How Parents Can Talk to Teens about Marijuana

Children look up to their parents to model their behavior, and parents’ influence on their teenage children is more than that of social media, friends, and teachers. Although topics, such as drugs, sex, and alcohol abuse, are sensitive, parents should always hold such discussions with their children, especially in their teen years.

Adult-use and medical marijuana legalization across the world has sparked a topic of discussion that is difficult to handle for parents. It is challenging for a parent to tell their kids not to use weed when it is accepted all over the world.

Scare tactics were the most used method of preventing kids from using drugs, but it was not as effective as they had hoped.

Scare Tactics

For several decades now, parents have been using scare tactics to keep their children away from drugs. However, the methods are expected to change over time; programs such as D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Program) didn’t succeed because they failed to consider human psychology.

People are curious beings, especially the young generation; therefore, when you tell them not to do something without conclusive evidence, the likelihood of them trying out the very thing you warned them off is very high.

Research shows that the likelihood of using marijuana among the children who were enrolled in the D.A.R.E program, and those who were not registered was very high.

These days’ children are educated using an evidence-based education approach. Parents should also openly discuss such topics with their children and make use of the following methods when teaching them about drugs.

Evidence-Based Methods

For a long time, parents have been relying on myths and non-educational modes to warn their children of marijuana, but in recent years more research has been done on weed, and this has given parents a point of reference when discussing marijuana.

It is important to teach kids about pot as soon as possible because marijuana consumption among the youth can leave lasting and irreversible damage to their developing brains. Furthermore, smoking weed is harmful to your health as it can lead to chronic cough or other respiratory ailments.

Listen Actively

Listen to your children without interrupting them when they are speaking; this helps lower their guard and make them open up more. Reflect on what your children are saying without judging them, and this will give them the impression that you understand them and what they are going through. Ask open-ended questions for them not to feel like they are being interrogated. Lastly, show compassion when you are talking to them as it will make them feel safe, comfortable, and they would be more willing to open up.

It is legal, so what?

If your kids use this phrase, applaud them for using critical thinking, but also try to show them that there is a variety of unhealthy and dangerous things that have been legal for a long time, such as alcohol, cigarettes, and some medication. List the dangers of consuming such products, such as cancer, addiction, DUIs, and liver cirrhosis. Also, point out the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to the consumption of these products.

Occasional Consumer

If your teenager tells you that he uses marijuana occasionally, applaud him for not only being honest but also avoiding being a regular consumer. Also, get to know why he/she decided to use occasionally as it could be a gateway to a more significant discussion.

Parents should teach their kids different ways of coping with pressure and stress by introducing them to music, books, sports, and arts. Also, try to get the conversation started in their early years and be patient with them.

Analysts believe that the work of parents in educating their kids about marijuana can be a little easier if adults make use of the consumer information provided by pot companies like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX).

420 with CNW – Missouri Lawmakers Probe Allegations of Bias in Marijuana Licensing Process

Missouri legislators still have questions about the alleged conflicts of interest in the new medical cannabis industry, irrespective of the testimony obtained from state regulators in the past few weeks.

At the beginning of February, the Missouri House’s government oversight committee started holding hearings to examine the rollout of the medical marijuana program after reports on scoring irregularities were spread across the state, and unsuccessful applicants filed hundreds of appeals.

The state’s medical marijuana czar, Lyndall Fraker, was questioned on a wide range of topics, such as why a private company was hired to rate the applications as well as how the state is going to handle the appeals of more than 800 applicants who were denied permits.

However, the lawmakers’ concern during the hearing was that the conflicts of interest could have tipped the scales to favor particular applicants.

The company which was hired to score the applicants, Wise Health Solutions, is at the bane of the allegations. The company is a joint venture between Veracious Investigative & Compliance Solutions and Oaksterdam University, which offers courses on marijuana.

Rep. Jared Taylor (R) said during a recent hearing that he has concerns that there were conflicts and that he finds it hard to believe that there was no conflict. He thinks it is something that should be investigated.

However, Fraker has stood his ground that there was no evidence of conflict of interest. He further noted that very few appeals contain any detail or proof irrespective of the large number of appeals submitted.

Fraker further said that they believe the attestation of Wise Health Solutions that there existed no conflict of interest.

And since the lawmakers still have questions lingering, this week, they will be questioning Randall Williams, the director of the Department of Health and Senior Services.

The constitutional amendment that approved the legalization of medical marijuana within the state complicates the state’s defense since it stipulates that information about the companies that won the licenses cannot be released. This stipulation is worrying the legislators that a lack of transparency on the companies could undermine the public confidence in the system or, worse, assume that they are covering for someone who manipulated the system during the scoring and awarding of the permits.

Jon Carpenter said that they need to be more transparent in the process to give the applicants peace of mind. Carpenter is a Democrat from the City of Kansas, and he serves on the government oversight committee.

Experts say that if the issues in Missouri aren’t quickly resolved, they could damage the image of state regulators before the industry, including players elsewhere like ChineseInvestors.com Inc. (OTCQB: CIIX), since the sector has grown on the promise of bringing opportunities to everyone in equal measure.
