420 with CNW – Researchers Call for Global Marijuana Dosage Standard Units

There are no widely accepted health guidelines for marijuana despite the increased moves by different states to legalize recreational cannabis and the widespread consumption of weed.

Addiction and Mental Health Group researchers from the University of Bath, in collaboration with UCL, Kings College London, and the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne, suggests that users should be educated on the dosages of THC, which is the component of the drug that is psychoactive (gets you high).

The team had conducted another research in 2018, which highlighted that over the past decade, the THC concentration in Europe doubled. When combined with this year’s study, which was published on 13th October in the journal Addiction, the researchers suggest that the THC should be set at a unit level of 5mg.

In countries where recreational cannabis is sold legally, such as Canada, the set level of mg in a product could be easily added to existing labels on the product packet. However, this system could prove to be disadvantageous in countries where cannabis is illegal, such as the UK. The researchers suggested introducing an international system where users and doctors are given guidelines.

On October 13, another team of researchers published their findings in the journal of Psychological Medicine. Their study examined the relationship between using different products of cannabis and their health outcomes. Their study used more than 55,000 people in 175 countries.

Using the Global Drug Survey, the researchers asked the consumers about the various marijuana products consumed and the severity of the illnesses when they used weed as well as their mental health.

The results of the study varied according to the type of marijuana product used and the associated health outcome. For instance, those who use higher doses of THC such as hashish or sinsemilla experienced more severe problems, unlike those who consumed a lower dose of THC.

The difference between the types of marijuana products sold in the legal and illegal market has prompted the authors of the research to direct a team of experts to meet in Lisbon to develop a standardized tool that will be used for assessing marijuana in the international market. The Society for the Study of Addiction is funding the development of the standardized tool.

Sam Craft from King’s College London, who is the lead author of the study, said that their research finding adds to the growing body of evidence which concludes that the health effects of marijuana are dose-related. Although the risks can be modified, the introduction of a unified international system will equip the users and medical marijuana doctors with information on the different types of cannabis products being consumed, as well as their potency.

Dr. Tom Freeman from Bath University, who is the senior author, said that the research findings show that developing an evidence-based framework will help people consume marijuana more responsibly. The absence of updated information increases the level of risk to the consumers.

There are many people across the globe using weed, and it is our responsibility as researchers to help them make informed choices, although the best and safest option is not using at all, he added.

The researchers hope that the introduction of a unified system will help in reducing the adverse effects of marijuana use in different countries while providing doctors and consumers with information for the safer use of marijuana.

It would be interesting to hear what views cannabis industry companies like Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTCQB: NUGS) have to say about how to develop standard units for marijuana.

420 with CNW – Another Marijuana Legalization Bill Introduced in Mexico Legislature

On Tuesday, a key Mexican lawmaker introduced a new marijuana legalization bill in parliament. The legislation would allow people to cultivate marijuana in their homes.

The coordinator of the ruling MORENA party’s bench in the Deputies Chamber, Mario Delgado Carrillo, while filing the legislation, argued that regulating marijuana would help in promoting health among the Mexicans. Furthermore,  having the government in charge of the program would help in reducing industry monopolization by the big marijuana companies.

In the bill, he outlined the history of the marijuana ban in Mexico while citing that there is not enough evidence to support the ban. The prohibition of cannabis is repressive, and it violates the fundamental rights of the Mexicans. He also added that legal access to marijuana could be used to treat patients with certain conditions.

The bill also states that prohibition has led to widespread violence in Mexico through the formation and multiplication of criminal gangs. Furthermore, marijuana legalization would create jobs and stimulate growth in the Mexican economy.

As stated in the bill, the government would form a department called Cannsalud, which would be responsible for regulating the legal cannabis market. The department would be a branch of the federal government with technical, operational, and management roles to help in the realization of the sole purpose of the bill, marijuana legalization.

Last year, Mexican lawmakers went on a benchmarking trip to Canada to learn more about their marijuana legalization model. In Canada, marijuana is sold through government stores. It seems the Mexican lawmakers have adopted the Canadian system of the government-run approach to marijuana regulation.

The Mexican legislation would permit adults to cultivate a maximum of six marijuana plants for recreational use.

According to Delgado, the state would constantly supervise and control the growth and use of marijuana to make sure that it stays within the margin of legality, and the marijuana market is not left to the control of the citizens.

Under the bill, a public company would be formed as an intermediary to help identify and mitigate risks possible in the market; such as international companies maximizing their profits by utilizing weed above the legal potency limit, which would prove harmful to human health.

The Mexican Senate has been organizing events to promote talks about marijuana legalization for the past several weeks. A former White House drug czar was featured in one event where he urged the Mexican lawmakers to implement strong regulation for the cannabis market.

Earlier this month, Senator Julio Mencaca of the MORENA party introduced new marijuana legislation that does not call for the government to control sales.

Experts believe marijuana industry players, such as Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX.V: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and The Green Organic Dutchman Holdings Ltd. (TSX: TGOD) (OTCQX: TGODF), in other markets are watching to see which of these bills is eventually passed in Mexico.

420 with CNW – Radio Frequency Technology Tweaked to Protect Marijuana Quality

Food safety companies have for long used radio frequency technology to disinfect food. Now this technology is being adopted by the marijuana industry in order to kill pathogens like mold and mildew while maintaining the quality of the marijuana.

The existing methods that were the staple in the industry all came with their own challenges, and this new technique addresses all those shortcomings.

For example, many companies use autoclave technology to disinfect marijuana. This method uses a lot of heat, pressure and steam to sterilize marijuana. While the method is effective, it also alters the taste, smell and color of marijuana. These changes make the marijuana less desirable.

Irradiation can also be used to sterilize marijuana, and this option is widespread in Canada. While effective, the method comes with serious challenges. For example, the cobalt 60 ionizing process creates carcinogens in the marijuana, and cannabis producers cannot conduct this process on their farms or processing facilities.

Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to kill pathogens. However, this only works for the pathogens on the surface of the marijuana. Hydrogen peroxide also triggers oxidation, and this results in burnt marijuana that is devoid of terpenes.

Growers can also opt for extraction in order to deal with a mold and mildew problem. While this method is effective, it converts marijuana into concentrates, and these fetch a lower price on the market yet growers want to sell marijuana flower.

As you can see, all the options above don’t pass all the necessary tests of scalability, cost-effectiveness, safety and being chemical-free. This is where the radio frequency (RF) method trounces them all.

RF equipment works by exciting the water molecules present in marijuana. The friction generated as the water molecules are excited generates heat. The equipment monitors this heat and turns off when it reaches a certain threshold.

The heat created kills all the pathogens in the substance that is being sterilized without compromising the quality of the product.

Ziel, a food and marijuana safety company, pioneered this method of killing pathogens in marijuana. Arthur de Cordova, the managing director of the company, says that they branched out into the marijuana space after a young man approached them during an expo in California and asked them to look into killing mold and mildew in marijuana since Diel specializes in sterilizing food.

They thought about that request and ended up modifying their machine so that it could handle small batches of marijuana at a time. The equipment they developed (the APEX machine) can sterilize about 20 pounds of marijuana in 15 minutes.

Industry watchers believe that marijuana companies like Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) and Chemistree Technology Inc. (CSE: CHM) (OTCQB: CHMJF) will soon make this novel sterilization method an industry standard since it offers so many advantages that existing methods lack.
