420 with CNW — Tennessee’s First Marijuana Restaurant Slated to Open This Month

The state of Tennessee will soon join the growing number of states that have launched markets for cannabis-infused products: Buds & Brews, the first cannabis business in Tennessee, is slated to open its doors to the public this month in Georgetown. The marijuana business first announced that it would be opening earlier this year, stating that it will provide traditional bar foods alongside cannabis-infused condiments that are manufactured and presealed in a facility before being sent to the restaurant.

Buds & Brews president and owner Michael Solomon says patrons will be able to order regular food and season it with THC and CBD-infused condiments. He said that the company has infused cannabis into the 25 most common condiments ranging from steak sauce and ketchup to ranch dressing and honey mustard. Using dosing spoons that are in line with the state’s legal cannabis limits, patrons will be able to receive one to five milligrams of cannabis-infused condiment per serving.

Solomon says these doses are so small that you could safely try a variety of condiments in one sitting. This controlled microdosing is especially beneficial for rookies who would like to give cannabis products a chance. On top of the condiments, Buds & Brews will also offer THC-infused desserts and mocktails on its menu. Solomon noted that the business will include novelty products such as deep-fried cannabis leaves on its menu.

Solomon has spent the past decade or so learning how to grow top-of-the-line cannabis, and he is now using his knowledge to enter the restaurant industry to bring top-shelf cannabis products to the public. He is also the founder and owner of Craft Cannabis, a marijuana company that develops THC-infused products, including the marijuana-infused condiments that will be available at Buds & Brews.

As per state law, Craft Cannabis only uses THC derived from industrial hemp with less than 0.35% THC. Craft Cannabis also handles the entirety of its operations locally, with Solomon saying that the firm cultivates, extracts and develops different cannabis-infused retail products in Tennessee.

Buds & Brews cofounder Dalton Crow has deep roots in the bar industry; his family owns 10 establishments in middle Tennessee, and he grew up steeped in the sector. While Crow’s family’s has been involved in the bar scene, Crow has not; Buds & Brews will be his first personal venture. In a news interview, Crow said that he was excited to team up with “some great guys” and make his own footprint in the bar and restaurant segment.

As more states and jurisdictions loosen their marijuana restrictions, industry players such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) are likely to come up with more innovative products targeting different segments of the market.

420 with CNW — Thai Companies Earn Big from Newly Legalized Marijuana Products

Cannabis is one of the fastest-growing industries in America for good reason. Barely a decade old, the industry has generated billions of dollars in sales revenue, created hundreds of thousands of new employment opportunities and filled state coffers with billions in tax revenue. Other territories and countries are adopting cannabis reform and launching legal markets, and they are starting to cash in on the lucrative cannabis market.

Thailand, which recently decriminalized the private cultivation of cannabis and sanctioned the use of cannabis leaves and extracts in foods, drinks and cosmetics, is beginning to rake in profits from the cannabis market. Consumer demand for cannabis products exploded as soon as the country lifted restrictions on cannabis, with Thai companies earning big bucks from the sale of products such as cannabis-infused skin-care products, bubble tea and desserts.

Thailand was the first Asian country to decriminalize the private cultivation and consumption of the entire cannabis plant. It was also the first nation in southeast Asia to legalize cannabis for medical use and research when it passed medical marijuana regulations in 2018. Thailand’s medical cannabis industry has boomed since then, and officials are hoping to turn the country’s cannabis industry into a money-making machine.

According to Thai Health Minister Anutin Charvirakul, Thailand’s cannabis industry is projected to achieve a valuation of more than $4.33 billion in the next five years. Speaking to Reuters, he said that his wish was for people to get rich from selling cannabis products in a positive way. A major driver behind cannabis reform in the country, Charvirakul emphasizes that his cannabis policy only involves healthcare and medical purposes.

Charvirakul stated that anything beyond medical use was inappropriate and that the country needed laws to control cannabis use. Thailand’s government even issued new cannabis regulations after decriminalization reforms led to fears that there were no restrictions on age and public use. The new regulations restricted cannabis use to people older than 20 years old as well as forbidding minors, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers from smoking cannabis; the regulations also ban all public smoking of the drug.

Since recreational cannabis isn’t legal under Thai law, commercial cannabis products can only contain cannabidiol (CBD). Unlike THC, cannabidiol is not psychoactive and will not make users feel high. For products to be approved, they have to contain less than 0.2% THC. Charvirakul states that due to public health laws, recreational cannabis use isn’t permitted in the country.

As more countries ease their restrictions on marijuana, companies with a transnational focus such as Flora Growth Corp (NASDAQ: FLGC) may have opportunities to spread their wings beyond the North American market.

420 with CNW — Michigan Disburses $20m in Grants for Studies on Cannabis for Veterans

In 2021 alone, states with legal cannabis markets collected more than $3.7 billion in recreational cannabis taxes. Michigan, which legalized adult-use cannabis in 2018, collected almost $175 million from a 10% excise tax on all recreational cannabis sales in the same year. Regulators from the state recently announced that a portion of these funds would be funneled to institutions researching the potential medical benefits of cannabis for veterans.

This will be the second round of funding provided by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (MRA) as part of the state’s Veteran Marijuana Research (VMR) Grant Program. This time, the agency will recommend providing two universities with $20 million in grants. According to Michigan’s recreational cannabis law, the state has to provide nonprofit organizations or academic institutions with $20 million annually.

These grants should be expressly used to fund clinical trials into the potential outcomes of using marijuana to treat conditions that tend to affect veterans. Furthermore, these clinical trials have to be sponsored by the recipient of the grant and have the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency reviewed five applicants for the grants, focusing on factors such as financial sustainability, experience, budget and management summaries, before recommending two institutions.

As per the agency’s recommendations, Wayne State University would receive a grant worth around $12.5 million while the University of Michigan would receive a $7.5 million grant. According to the University of Michigan, the school will use its grant to research whether marijuana-based treatments could be effective at treating chronic pain and reducing suicide risk in veterans. The university will specifically focus on researching cannabidiol’s (CBD) pain-relieving properties.

Data shows that 65.6% of veterans regularly deal with chronic pain and that 9.1% live with severe chronic pain. The Department of Veteran Affairs states that back pain, joint pain and musculoskeletal pain tend to be the most common types of chronic pain that afflict veterans. Pharmaceutical medications meant to alleviate chronic pain aren’t always successful, and they usually leave veterans with a variety of side effects.

Wayne State University, on the other hand, will use the grants to fund different studies. The first will be a clinical trial into the efficacy of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC against post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans who are in prolonged exposure (PE) therapy. The clinical trial will research how cannabis affects the neurobiological and neuroinflammation mechanisms that are associated with suicide ideation in veterans suffering from PTSD.

The marijuana tax funds being injected by Michigan into studying how cannabis can be helpful to military veterans illustrates just how far-reaching the benefits of permitting companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) to operate can be, not just to the economy but to the community as well.

420 with CNW — Researchers Find Marijuana May Be Effective Against Parkinson’s Disease

Researchers have uncovered definite proof that cannabis can be effective at alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The neurodegenerative disorder, which was first identified in 1872 by James Parkinson, affects nearly one million Americans. Figures show that at least 6,000 individuals are diagnosed with the disorder every year.

The disease causes certain parts of the brain to degenerate, causing symptoms such as impaired coordination and balance, slow movements, muscle stiffness and tremors in the legs, hands, arms and jaws. More than a century after the disease was first identified, we still haven’t found an effective cure, relying instead on treatments that can reduce the symptoms and improve the quality of life of affected patients.

However, many of these medications tend to leave patients with several side effects, including low blood pressure, nausea, hallucinations, behavioral issues and involuntary movements.

A recent survey of German Parkinson’s patients has revealed that more than one-half of the participants saw benefits after taking part in cannabis clinical trials. The study, whose findings were reported in the “Journal of Parkinson’s Disease,” found that 54% of Parkinson’s patients who use certain cannabis strains tolerated the drug well and saw an overall positive impact. More than 40% said that cannabis treatment alleviated muscle cramps and pain while more than 20% reported that taking cannabis reduced anxiety, stiffness, tremors and restless legs as well as feeling cold.

The study’s lead researcher, Carsten Buhmann, noted that although patients with Parkinson’s disorder (PD) were interested in cannabis treatments, they often lacked relevant knowledge on cannabinoids and which ones they should take.

A different survey revealed that some PD patients already consume marijuana at least once a day. The survey was conducted by the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) via the Fox Insight platform, with researchers from the University of Colorado asking participants about the type of marijuana products they take, the amount of THC and CBD those products contained, how long they had been medicating with cannabis and their consumption frequency.

Of the nearly 1,900 patients who were polled, more than 70% said that they consume cannabis, usually orally, at least once a day. Almost 50% of the participants used high-CBD products, 15% took products with equal amounts of CBD and THC, and some weren’t sure about the type of marijuana products they consumed.

Plenty of the patients revealed that cannabis had helped to reduce their pain, agitation and anxiety, as well as helping with sleep.

Another survey from 2022 showed that PD patients who used high-THC products reported reductions in tremors, depression and nausea as well as improved appetite. Researchers from the 2022 survey concluded that cannabis showed promise as a natural treatment for Parkinson’s disease and called for more rigorous and controlled studies.

There are many more beneficial effects of marijuana that are yet to be documented by the scientific community, and you can bet that as these benefits are discovered, the market served by licensed companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) will continue to grow.

420 with CNW — Report Says Nearly 300 Jobs Are Created Daily in Cannabis Industry

The marijuana industry has grown significantly these last few years. A good way to determine just how rapidly it has grown is to look at how many employment opportunities the industry has created thus far.

A new report by Leafly reported that roughly 280 new marijuana jobs are created every day. Cumulatively, this added up to an estimated 428,000 jobs by January 2022, making this particular industry one of the fastest-growing employers in the United States. This growth is particularly impressive if someone considers that it has been less than a decade since the states of Washington and Colorado began legal weed sales.

It also makes the marijuana industry and other related industries, such as legal work and marketing, good places to look for jobs.

Among all the states, California is the largest employer in the marijuana industry, which has created approximately 83,000 jobs. The states of Colorado, Michigan and Illinois are also top employers, employing about 38300, 31100 and 28900 individuals respectively. However, analysts expect that the states of New Jersey and New York will rise among the ranks of marijuana employment as soon as legal cannabis sales commence.

Common jobs in the marijuana industry include the following:

Edible maker

Edibles make up a significant share of the marijuana market. The marijuana industry is a creative one, with entrepreneurs continuously creating new types of marijuana-infused baked goods, gummies, beverages, tea and candy.

Budtender

Budtenders usually work at dispensaries, answering any queries that consumers may have and recommending cannabis strains that might best meet consumers’ needs. Being a budtender requires a combination of strong customer service skills and cannabis knowledge.

Dispensary manager

To be the manager of a dispensary, you need to possess in-depth knowledge of the cannabis business as well as have strong business skills, especially in retail.

Delivery service

As more cannabis businesses deliver their products to customers’ homes, the need for delivery people or a company that offers delivery services grows.

Security service

Cannabis manufacturers and dispensaries often require licensed security guards to ensure safety at their facilities.

Leafly expects that as more states legalize marijuana and if Congress makes weed legal federally, full employment in the industry will surpass 1.5 million jobs.

One can also accurately determine marijuana’s impact on the economy by quantifying the tax dollars generated from marijuana sales. Recent data shows that in the 2014–21 period, the industry generated about $11 billion in sales in both local and state jurisdictions.

As the jobs report shows, industry players such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) are contributing the community development by, among other things, availing high-paying jobs to residents.

420 with CNW — Clinton Calls CBD Trial’s Results Encouraging for Pain Treatment

A recent press release by Orcosa highlights a statement made by former U.S. President Bill Clinton to the effect that the results of a clinical trial by NYU Langone, which tested the effectiveness of CBD in managing pain, were very encouraging. Clinton, who has in the past revealed that he used cannabis in his youth, has been keenly following the progression of these CBD trials.

Orcosa is a life sciences company that is focused on modernizing the way drugs are taken through the use of its next-generation drug-delivery technology. The company supplied the CBD products used in the trial, which contained TR Processing’s CBD ingredient.

In the press release, the former president is quoted as stating that the Clinton Foundation had worked for years to decrease opioid addiction and related deaths, explaining that to succeed, nonaddictive alternatives to opioids were needed to help manage patient pain. Clinton also emphasized the importance of looking into alternatives to opioid-based painkillers, noting that he was eager to see the results of the next phase of the trials. The trial involved 99 participants aged between 18 and 75, who had undergone rotator cuff surgery. Its results show that the Oravexx CBD tablet by Orcosa substantially reduced post-op pain in comparison to the placebo, without inducing any severe side effects.

This statement is similar to prior comments made by Clinton, which referenced emerging research into CBD as an effective therapy to help manage pain. At the time, the article published with Clinton’s remarks was deleted, allegedly due to pressure from the former president’s team, before being posted again online.

Regardless, these statements are a far cry from how the former president’s administration handled efforts to legalize medical marijuana, going as far as to threaten to revoke the DEA giving licenses for physicians who recommended cannabis to patients in accordance with state law.

TR Processing also revealed that Andrea Barthwell had joined the company’s board of directors and would be leading a division committed to developing patented therapies. Barthwell, who is a former White House deputy drug czar, has been criticized by cannabis advocates over previous misleading and dismissive claims that she made about medical marijuana before proceeding to assist GW Pharmaceuticals in obtaining approval for its Sativex drug, which is cannabinoid-based.

In TR Processing’s press release, Barthwell stated that she was excited by the company’s focus on cannabinoid development and believed that pharmaceutical companies, physicians and patients were looking for effective and safe solutions to manage pain as well as for general health and well-being.

As more positive comments about different cannabinoids come from leading figures such as Clinton, public perceptions could change a lot faster among all demographic segments, and the cannabis products made by companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) will enjoy an even bigger market in the years to come.
