420 with CNW — Why Cannabis Firms Need to Focus on ESG Principles

Cannabis is one of the fastest-growing sectors in America. After only a couple of years of legal sales, cannabis firms across the country have generated billions of dollars in sales and created hundreds of thousands of new employment opportunities. The global cannabis industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 32.04% from 2021–28, reaching a valuation of $197.74 billion in 2028. As the market fills with competition, cannabis companies that want to stand out from the pack and attract investors will need to focus on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (“ESG”) principles.

ESG principles are environmental, social and corporate governance criteria that determine a company’s ethical impact and sustainability. A significant number of private investors look at waste and sustainability when they are considering whether or not they should invest in a company. According to an Association of Investment Companies study that surveyed private investors, 56% of respondents indicated they care a great deal about climate change. With global warming and climate change becoming more pressing by the day, it’s only natural that investors would want to invest in companies that have ethical practices and make sustainability a priority.

The survey revealed that 65% of private investors consider ESG issues when they finance companies. Investors who were younger than 45 were much more concerned with ESG principles (77%) than those 45 and older (61%).

Ideally, you should dedicate a great deal of your attention to ESG principles if you wish to attract private investors. For starters, you can conduct a materiality assessment to find how best your firm can interact with and engage with the neighboring community. This involves forming a team with diverse skills, identifying stakeholders that can affect your business and engaging with those stakeholders to identify their most pressing concerns.

After that, you will be in a better position to create an integrated ESG report that discloses potential risks pertaining to three key areas: environmental, social, and corporate governance. The report can be used to convince senior leadership to act on potential ESG deficiencies, identify opportunities for more efficient resource allocation and satisfy stakeholder needs.

Furthermore, creating an integrated ESG report and acting on it will enable your communications and marketing team to promote the company’s ESG success stories. Ultimately, cannabis companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), which focus on ESG principles, will significantly increase their chances of attracting private investors and succeeding in the cannabis space.

420 with CNW — Experts Include Hemp Among Fabric Options for Sensitive Skin

Hemp is one of the most versatile crops available. Outlawed for centuries because of its close relation to the ever-controversial marijuana, industrial hemp recently became legal when Congress passed the 2018 farm bill. The legislation allowed the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its derivatives as long as they contained less than 0.3% THC, the chemical in marijuana that makes users feel “high.” Since then, hemp has grown in popularity due to the alleged medical abilities of a chemical compound called CBD.

But while plenty of people know about CBD and its potential health benefits, not many are aware of the fact that hemp is an excellent fabric. Long before cannabis was outlawed and the drug war wreaked havoc across America, people were using fabric spun from hemp to make clothes, flags and even sails. Now that industrial hemp is no longer outlawed, hemp fabrics are making a comeback. With a lot of clothes on the market made of fabrics that are uncomfortable and irritate the skin, this couldn’t have come at a better time.

Generally, hemp is a lightweight, breathable durable fabric. Thanks to its high durability and absorbency, hemp can also make good towels though it isn’t as soft as high thread count cotton. Regardless, most experts agree that it is still superior to plenty of the synthetic fabrics on the market. Ajoy K Sarkar, a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, says natural fabrics such as hemp, cotton, cashmere, silk, linen and those made from wood pulp are the most skin friendly. As long as a fiber has good conductivity and wicking properties, which hemp does, it will be ideal for people with skin conditions.

Synthetic fibers such as acrylics, polyester, nylon and rayon, can have a negative effect on people with skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. These fabrics tend to be hydrophobic and trap moisture that can irritate the skin, unlike hemp which has water-wicking properties. If you have a skin condition, you should keep an eye on the fabrics your clothes are made of to avoid exacerbating the condition. As Sakar says, natural fibers would be the better option.

You may want to avoid natural fibers such as wool during the winter because these fibers can also result in skin reactions and make atopic dermatitis worse, he says. Fortunately, you can wear breathable fabrics such as cotton or hemp underneath wool and other synthetic fibers to keep warm and comfortable during the winter.

Fortunately for people with skin issues, many companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) now make hemp textiles so access to high-quality fabrics is no longer limited.

420 with CNW — Florida Bipartisan Bill Seeks to Reform Medical Cannabis Program

State cannabis laws have always been tricky; in most cases, they arise from voter-approved initiatives, and their structures are usually determined by lawmakers who largely aren’t fans of cannabis. The result is a lot of push and pull between Republicans and Democrats while consumers sometimes have to contend with a wide variety of subpar, contaminated and even unsafe cannabis products. In Florida, both sides of the political spectrum are setting aside their differences to work on a major cannabis reform bill that would potentially fix an oversight left by the 2018 farm bill.

The farm bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its derivatives, including CBD. Cannabidiol (“CBD”) has been found to have a variety of medical properties and has even been approved for use in an epilepsy drug called Epidiolex. The federal legislation described industrial hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC and required that all hemp products have the same amount of delta-9 THC. However, thanks to a loophole in the bill, hemp products with plenty of delta-8 THC aren’t as regulated, although delta-8 THC is also psychoactive and can cause intoxication.

On top of increasing delta-8 regulation, HB 679 would expand the use of telehealth, restrict medical cannabis advertising, increase the validity of medical cannabis cards from a year to two, and restrict medical marijuana companies from flipping inactive licenses for profit. The bill would also expand testing protocols, establish a Medical Marijuana Testing Advisory Council and require that physicians take a six-hour training course before they can recommend medical marijuana. Representatives Andrew Learned and Spencer Roach are the legislation’s sponsors.

Learned says that Florida’s legislature hasn’t advanced the state’s cannabis sector over the past five years, but their bill is the first step and more are in development. So while the FDA still hasn’t evaluated delta-8 products, HB 679 would require businesses that deal in these products to register them with state authorities and limit their sales to Floridians 21 years of age and older. Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried says that the state has to make sure it protects medical cannabis consumers and welcomes the bill’s clarity regarding issues such as product testing.

Learned’s and Roach’s bill is a true compromise, lobbyists and lawmakers say. Both sides won’t get everything they want, but at the end of the day, the bill would be a win for Florida’s medical cannabis program. For example, it doesn’t include a controversial THC cap first introduced by Roach, a Republican, as well as measures including offering workplace protections for medical cannabis patients that are championed by some Democrats. Senators Joe Gruters and Shevrin Jones will soon file a companion bill in the Senate.

These proposed reforms could give entities such as Flora Growth Corp (NASDAQ: FLGC) added impetus to grow due to the additional streamlining of the regulatory regime in the state.

420 with CNW — VA Researcher Shares Cannabis Insights, Study Results during Latest Podcast

In a new podcast, a researcher from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs stated that individuals suffering from PTSD who use cannabis experience fewer symptoms of the disorder and recover more quickly than individuals who don’t. The forensic neuro-psychiatrist, Hal Wortzel, discussed the findings of an observational study he’d carried out during the podcast. This is in addition to talking about how the ongoing federal prohibition on cannabis has hindered research from progressing.

To learn how marijuana affects post-traumatic stress disorder, the team of researchers, led by Wortzel, tracked two groups comprising of 150 individuals living with the condition. Of this number, one-half used cannabis to manage their symptoms while the other half didn’t. The individuals were tracked for a period of years, with researchers noting that despite the limits to observational studies, their results offered evidence that cannabis has therapeutic benefits for some populations.

Wortzel stated that in comparison with those who didn’t use cannabis, those who used cannabis recovered more quickly and were roughly twice as likely to not meet the criteria for PTSD after a while. The research also found that cannabis wasn’t linked to better sleep or other functional activity levels and outcomes. This is surprising, as anecdotal evidence from many individuals report improved sleep with marijuana.

In the podcast, which is produced by the Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center, Wortzel stated that a greater investment in experimental studies on cannabis’ health impacts needed to be made. He explained that because cannabis and cannabis products were still federally illegal, researchers needed to use the products developed by the U.S. government to conduct experimental studies, which aren’t the products that the majority of people in the U.S. use or purchase from dispensaries.

Most researchers, including the head of NIDA, have complained that they are currently forced to use marijuana grown from one federally authorized source at the University of Mississippi to conduct studies; that marijuana isn’t available in the state-legal commercial markets.

This is one of the cannabis research barriers highlighted in a report that the National Institute of Drug Abuse submitted to Congress recently. Congressional legislators are currently focused on advancing measures to end cannabis prohibition.

However, officials from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs have rejected even the fairest legislation that was drafted to promote clinical research into the medical value of marijuana, as well as promote veteran access to medical cannabis. Such reluctance on the part of the VA may make it harder for veterans to access even the beneficial products currently available from companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC).

420 with CNW — Why You Should Start Using CBD Skincare Products

In the recent years, we’ve seen interest in CBD increase greatly, especially since the 2018 Agricultural Improvement Act was passed. CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the two most common active ingredients in cannabis, with the other being THC. CBD does not induce a high by itself, unlike THC, which is a psychoactive compound.

The health benefits of CBD have made the compound popular in many industries, the beauty industry among them. CBD skincare products have as a result grown in popularity, with companies producing everything from CBD lotions and soaps to oils.

If you’re curious about the products and would like to try them, below are a few reasons why you should.

Potential as a skin cancer treatment

While most research on the compound focuses on its ability to relieve stress, recent research has found that CBD may be useful in the treatment of skin cancer (melanoma). The study, conducted by researchers from the York College of Pennsylvania, found that CBD could potentially hinder cancer cell development.

It should be noted that the assertion remains inconclusive, with researchers currently focused on examining more of the compound’s effects on melanoma.

May help smooth skin

Using a skincare product with CBD may help one achieve glowing and satin-smooth skin. In addition to having antioxidant properties, CBD also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which can assist in the reduction of redness and swelling.

Some skincare products infused with CBD also improve itchy and dry skin, with various companies also introducing to the market formulations that can prevent psoriasis, acne and eczema.

If you want glowing skin, consider the use of CBD moisturizing products, especially if you have dry skin or your skin is prone to dryness. It helps that you can choose from oils, serums and lotions that come in a variety of scents, with most popular CBD skincare brands manufacturing their products from 100% organic material.

Could provide an anti-aging ingredient

CBD is known to provide relief from anxiety, chronic pain and stress. In addition to this, when it is infused in skincare products, it can also help decrease the onset of wrinkles and delay aging.

Skin aging is usually accelerated by free radical production, which damages healthy skin cells. CBD can help with this as it contains antioxidants that help counter the effects of free radicals and protect healthy skin cells from them. This is in addition to eliminating toxins from the skin. If you’re interested in looking younger, consider using facial creams and oils that are infused with antioxidants and CBD.

Many companies, including Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), can be a good source for CBD skincare products, but you need to do your homework first before settling on a supplier.

Linen and hemp are natural fibers that have been used for various purposes for a long time now. Both fibers have various similarities as well as differences, so let’s discuss them below.

Where do linen and hemp come from?

Fabric from linen is made from the cellulose fibers found in the stalk of the flax plant; hemp fibers are extracted from the stalk of the cannabis sativa plant.

Both fibers have been used for centuries. In particular, hemp has been used to make cloth, fishing nets and even paper.

What are the similarities between the two fibers?

Linen and hemp are both breathable and natural materials; they also feature strong long-lasting fibers. They are also tough fabrics that absorb dyes and moisture easily and soften after washing. Hemp and linen are also biodegradable and possess antibacterial properties. This is in addition to being resistant to mold, mildew and moths.

These fabrics are also known to improve wash after wash and have hollow fibers, which makes them effective insulators suitable for the winter and summer seasons.

Additionally, these fabrics can be blended with other fibers, with the primary negative being that both hemp and linen crease easily.

What are the differences between the two?

In comparison to linen, hemp doesn’t need a lot of maintenance as it becomes soft after it is first washed and gets softer after every additional wash. Hemp is also known to stretch less in comparison to other natural fibers, which makes linen’s elastic recovery better than that of hemp.

Fiber bundles of hemp are longer than those of flax, which many believe is why hemp is stronger in comparison to linen. It is said that hemp is almost eight times stronger than the flax fiber.

In addition to this, hemp is also resistant to UV light, which means that it won’t disintegrate or fade in the sun light. Furthermore, hemp is naturally resistant to pests and is rated among the top-five best crops for biodiversity.

What are some of the fibers’ applications?

Traditionally, linen is used in home textiles such as tablecloths, bedding, lampshades, wall coverings and tea towels. The fabric is also popular in summer fashion, which includes linen dresses, tops, shirts and skirts, which keep individuals airy and cool during the season.

On the other hand, hemp fiber is used as animal feed and building material, as an ingredient in skin care as well as in plastic, biofuel, paper and textiles. Under textiles, the strong fiber has various applications, which include hats, upholstery, shoes, rugs and apparel.

As more companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) begin manufacturing fabrics out of hemp, the world will have no choice but to embrace this ecofriendly and cost-effective material.
