420 with CNW — Most Americans Don’t Believe Propaganda About Marijuana’s Purported Dangers

For the millions of Americans who grew up under the prohibitionist era, cannabis was presented as a dangerous gateway drug that significantly contributed to drug abuse and criminal activity. Anti-cannabis propaganda was rife during this period, with prohibitionists assigning a wide range of negative effects to cannabis use despite the fact that there was barely any scientific research into the matter.

Decades later, tens of millions of Americans now have access to the drug through state-legal markets. Attitudes toward the drug have changed over the past two decades, especially among younger generations, and more people believe that cannabis has more positive effects than negative. According to a recent poll that adds to the growing body of research on cannabis, it seems that most Americans no longer believe prohibitionist claims about the purported dangers of using cannabis.

Rasmussen Reports polled 1,000 Americans to find out their views on drug misuse in America and whether or not cannabis was a gateway drug that opened the door to more dangerous drugs. An estimated 59% said that they believed drug misuse in America was getting worse while 9% said the health issue is showing improvements. Additionally, 29% of the respondents said that cannabis was “not at all dangerous” and 28% said that cannabis is “not very dangerous.”

Conversely, 12% of the Americans who were surveyed said that cannabis is “very dangerous,” and 23% said that the controversial plant is “somewhat dangerous.” Unsurprisingly, 60% of Democrats thought that cannabis wasn’t dangerous, while 48% of Republicans said the drug is “somewhat dangerous” while 45% said that it wasn’t dangerous. Furthermore, of the respondents who believed that drug misuse was getting worse in America, 56% said that they didn’t think marijuana was part of the overarching drug problem.

Opinion on whether cannabis serves as a gateway drug was divided, with 46% saying it was “somewhat likely” or “very likely” that cannabis use preceded the use of more dangerous drugs. On the other hand, 46% of the respondents said that it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that cannabis was a gateway to harder drugs.

Although some of the opinions were mixed, the poll generally showed that Americans are less likely to believe claims that cannabis is a dangerous drug. It echoes sentiments that have been recorded by previous surveys: public sentiments about cannabis are steadily improving. This improvement is creating an ever-growing market for sector players such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC).

Rosy Outlook for Global Cannabis Market Boosts Hopes for Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) as Supply Chain Expands

  • Cannabis grower and product maker Flora Growth is developing its own approach to riding troubling economic forces, boasting a 604 percent YOY increase in the H1 reporting period this year
  • Market analysts predict the global cannabis market’s value will rise during the next five years at a CAGR of 24.3 percent to arrive at annual valuation of $82.3 billion
  • Flora Growth is levying the potential of recent cooperative agreements to increase the reach of its product distribution pipeline, including new exports to Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the United States
  • Europe is predicted to be the fastest-growing region for cannabis sales during the next few years as a result of Europeans’ recognition of cannabis’ medical benefits and the ongoing advance of legalization

Cannabis cultivator, brand manufacturer and global distributor Flora Growth (NASDAQ: FLGC) is offering a bit of pain relief to economies battered by recent uncertainty over a costly worldwide pandemic, a war in Europe’s breadbasket and the retail supply chain disruptions that have resulted from them.

The Canadian company with a productive base of operations in Colombia’s fertile greenbelt is licensed to cultivate cannabis on a 100-hectare (about 247-acre) farming facility and then deliver its product to its GMP-certified processing facility in the nation’s capital, where beauty, phytotherapeutic and nutraceutical products are prepared for market.

And analysts foresee that market continuing to burst with opportunities. Reportlinker.com stated last month that it expects the global cannabis market to end the year with a valuation of $27.7 billion and to grow at a CAGR of 24.3 percent through 2027 to achieve $82.3 billion in sales at the conclusion of the next five years. Europe is expected to be the fastest-growing region.

“The market in Europe is majorly driven by the awareness of medical benefits of cannabis in the region coupled with the healthcare system present in several European countries that covers the health expenditure of most patients in these regions. As the legalization of cannabis in European countries is at a nascent stage, this creates a considerable opportunity for companies to establish themselves in the region,” the report states (https://cnw.fm/Zw56a).

Flora’s brand division is focused on developing plant-based consumer products, such as cannabinoid-infused juices, gummies, topicals, inhalables, and skin care. But the company also prioritizes the manufacture of “cannabinoid-derived medical formulations that can be sold domestically and internationally” (https://cnw.fm/YNSa7).

In September, the company announced that it had completed its first exports of high-CBD dried cannabis flower to Switzerland and the Czech Republic and of CBD isolate to the United States.

“We are proud to help increase access to safe, legal CBD and THC to consumers all over the globe,” Flora Growth Chairman and CEO Luis Merchan stated at the time (https://cnw.fm/q4BKn). “We look forward to working closely with our partners in Europe and North America to bring high-quality Colombian cannabis products and raw materials to market.”

Flora has pursued acquisitions and partnerships that will help its distribution supply chain grow. Two recent examples include the receipt of about 75 SKUs from the No Cap Hemp Co. brand and a collaboration with Colombia’s Misak indigenous tribe’s pharmaceutical arm to speed up the fulfillment of company cannabis exports by taking advantage of the tribe’s approved license for medicinal and scientific use cannabis.

The agreements are helping Flora to effectively improve its profitability through overhead management and vigilance in regard to working capital.

“With all three of our core pillars generating revenue in the second half of 2022 … we believe we have a path to profitability that few global cannabis companies can achieve in this difficult environment,” Merchan stated in August (https://cnw.fm/oeJV7).

420 with CNW — USDA Report Highlights Environmental, Economic Benefits of Hemp as EU Market Grows

In August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report on the hemp industry boom in the European Union. The report recognized that hemp was an important commodity that could aid the European Union in achieving its climate-related objectives.

The report also discusses how the cannabis crop has been cultivated and utilized in the region for millennia and how products from the crop are now increasing in popularity, as more nations enact decriminalization reforms. The report states that since the Middle Age, all parts of the hemp plant were consumed in European nations, including its flowers, leaves and seeds as well as its extracts.

The nonintoxicating plant was also used as a source of fiber for manufacturing textiles and rope. This is in addition to being used in ancient medicines. However, in the 20th century, Europe and the United States banned the plant, with its ban partially contributing to the EU’s increased reliance on fossil-based alternatives for industrial applications.

The relegalization of the cannabis plant has renewed interest in the crop, with the U.S. Department of Agriculture noting that the EU is currently assessing opportunities that would expand the usage of hemp. One of the motives behind the EU’s renewed interest is to decrease the use of carbon-intensive products and fossil fuels.

The report states that the growing of hemp provides various environmental benefits, which include increased biodiversity and prevention of erosion and carbon storage, as well as eliminating the use of pesticides. The crop’s dense leaves also create a natural soil cover, which decreases loss of water, while its flowering cycle creates a lot of pollen, which supports crop pollination for other plants.

Data from the European Commission shows that in 2019, the cultivation of hemp had increased with more than 34,000 hectares being dedicated to growing the plant. Of all the countries in the EU, France is said to be the biggest hemp cultivator, closely followed by Italy, the Netherlands and Estonia.

The report also highlights that the European Union recently passed an updated Common Agricultural Policy, which will take effect at the beginning of next year and last through 2027. Under the new policy, hemp cultivators will be eligible for direct payments for a range of varieties, as long as the plants do not exceed the dry weight 0.3% THC limit.

The Department of Agriculture notes that American stakeholders interested in entering the European hemp market should ensure that they understand the regulations, which typically vary from one nation to another.

The exploding cannabis/hemp market in Europe is likely to benefit internationally focused companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), which are constantly looking for new markets to expand into and serve.

420 with CNW — Medical Marijuana Firm Wants Court to Allow Selling Cannabis Edibles on Open Market

Edibles have been giving cannabis flower a run for its money in recent years. As people became more conscious of the health effects of smoking, the demand for a safer, more discreet means to consume cannabis grew exponentially. Edibles fill that niche neatly by allowing users to consume cannabis in a safe and discreet way.

Furthermore, edibles also allow for more precise dosing, making it easier for newbies to try cannabis without getting overwhelmed the first time. This precise dosing capability make edibles particularly suited for medical applications. In Minnesota, a medical marijuana company called Vireo Health is fighting for the right to sell cannabis edibles on the open market.

The company recently filed a lawsuit against the state’s new regulations for hemp-derived THC edibles. THC, or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main chemical agent in cannabis. The only difference between cannabis and hemp is that hemp has minuscule THC levels and cannot cause intoxication when used. The THC used in hemp edibles is derived from CBD (cannabidiol)-rich hemp, a chemical compound that doesn’t have intoxicating properties and occurs in abundance in hemp.

Although the THC produced from hemp and cannabis is chemically identical, Minnesota law does not allow the sale of cannabis-derived THC edibles. Vireo Health argued in its lawsuit that outlawing edibles made from hemp-derived THC was a violation of the company’s rights because the law kept its products illegal under Minnesota’s medical cannabis program. The suit states that the medical marijuana company would be forced to “drastically change its business model” to be treated equally with sellers who sold a chemically identical product.

If the lawsuit is successful, Vireo Health will be able to sell cannabis edibles to Minnesota residents aged 21 and older as long as it caps THC content at 5 mg per serving and 50 mg per package. However, Minnesota Cannabis Association president Steven Brown says that Vireo Health could open a retail branch separate from the medical marijuana business to sell hemp-derived edibles anytime.

Brown, who is also the owner of a store called Nothing but Hemp, posits that “behemoth” companies such as Vireo Health usually have one main goal whenever they enter a new industry: to take over the entire market share. He thinks that the two companies registered to manufacture medical cannabis in Minnesota — Vireo Health and Leafline Labs — will lobby against the state’s hemp edible rules in the 2023 legislative session; he says the hemp industry is preparing for their opposition.

The struggle for ending prohibition is a marathon that takes plenty of time, and this lawsuit in Minnesota could be another step in the fight for a regulatory setup that allows all marijuana companies everywhere, including Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), to operate in a way that they can be regarded as legitimate businesses, just as players in other industries.

Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) Expands Global Distribution Network to Three Industry-Leading Countries; Wins Award for Best M&A Deal at the 2022 Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference

  • Flora just announced the first successful export of Colombian high-CBD dried cannabis flower to Switzerland and the Czech Republic, as well as CBD isolate to the United States
  • Luis Merchan, the company’s CEO, has described this as a “major milestone,” one that further defines the company’s revenue pipeline
  • He pointed out the increasing demand for Flora’s high-quality, high-margin flower and derivatives from its cultivation operation in Colombia, terming it as a testament to the Flora team’s ability to execute in a very complex global regulatory environment
  • Flora also earned the Best M&A Deal award at Benzinga’s 2022 Cannabis Capital Conference in Chicago, an award that recognized the company’s strategic M&A objectives, including acquiring products, expertise, expanding distribution, and customers

On September 26, Flora Growth (NASDAQ: FLGC) announced the first successful export of Colombian high-CBD dried cannabis flower to Switzerland and the Czech Republic, as well as CBD, isolate to the United States. Luis Merchan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of the company, described this as a “major milestone,” one that further defines Flora’s revenue pipeline. The company also launched its commercial website, where interested buyers can expedite the processing of orders and learn about the company’s cultivation and growth practices (https://cnw.fm/l07N0).

With the global CBD market having achieved impressive growth thus far and showing even greater potential growth in the coming years, Flora is positioning itself as a key industry player, looking to take advantage of this development.

The sector is projected to be valued at US$47 billion by 2028, up from US$4.9 billion in 2021 (https://cnw.fm/EjfsS). This growth will be primarily attributed to an overall shift in policy on CBD programs in key markets, with countries such as Switzerland announcing pilot projects to open adult-use cannabis sales to test the viability of a fully legal recreational market.

“As our global distribution network continues to evolve, adding these three industry-leading countries to our footprint is a major milestone for Flora,” noted Mr. Merchan.

“Our cultivation operation in Colombia, which provides high-quality, high-margin flower and derivatives, has experienced increasing demand. These exports are a testament to our team’s ability to execute in a very complex global regulatory environment and create new commercial revenue for our company,” he added.

Flora’s current performance can be attributed to the company’s commitment to diversifying its product line and its team’s resolve to explore new markets. In addition, the company has leveraged strategic acquisitions, including Vessel Brand Inc., Just Brands LLC, and High Roller Private Label LLC, among others, to achieve both short-term and long-term objectives.

These efforts have earned Flora the Best M&A Deal award at Benzinga’s 2022 Cannabis Capital Conference held in Chicago.

“We are honored to receive the award for Best M&A Deal at the Benzinga Cannabis Capital Conference, which recognizes our strategic M&A objectives, including acquiring products, expertise, expanding distribution, and customers,” noted Mr. Merchan (https://cnw.fm/qDZVm).

Flora’s acquisitions have enhanced the company’s infrastructure in the United States while allowing it to benefit from widespread distribution across various mainstream U.S. channels. JustCBD’s acquisition, completed in February 2022, for instance, expanded the company’s portfolio by over 300 products and opened the company up to over 300,000 customers.

“This acquisition continues to strengthen Flora’s foothold in the U.S. wellness market as well as providing meaningful growth acceleration and delivering human capital to the Flora organization,” noted Mr. Merchan during the announcement of the JustCBD acquisition (https://cnw.fm/x6v6S).

Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) Strategic Acquisitions, Expanding Cannabis Exports Give Significant Boost to Company’s Revenue Streams

  • Flora Growth is a global cannabis cultivator, product builder, and supplier, experiencing continued growth thanks to strategic acquisitions and an expanding supply chain for marketing its brands in various countries
  • Flora announced its most recent acquisition in September — a deal to acquire the assets of the No Cap Hemp Co. brand in exchange for payment of 10 percent of the No Cap brand revenues up to a maximum of $2 million
  • The deal grants Flora an immediate revenue stream free of closing cost considerations
  • Flora has seen revenues skyrocket over the past year, with a 604 percent YOY increase in the H1 reporting period

Global cannabis cultivator, product manufacturer and distributor Flora Growth (NASDAQ: FLGC) is measuring its success in rapidly rising revenues brought on by strategic acquisitions and the expanding international movement of its brands.

The company recently reported a 604 percent increase YOY in its H1 revenues to about $15 million, which was also a 117 percent increase over the previous half-year financial report, and is anticipating new momentum from the recent acquisition of the No Cap Hemp Co. brand by Flora’s wholly owned subsidiary Just Brands LLC.

The No Cap acquisition is expected to add some 75 SKUs to Flora’s product portfolio plus the “No Cap” and “Moonblunt” trademarks, according to a Sept. 7 company news release.

“This transaction will allow Flora to immediately benefit from a profitable, cash flow positive and growing business,” Flora Growth Chairman and CEO Luis Merchan stated (https://cnw.fm/9lMtQ). “We look forward to increasing our product offering through this transaction while broadening our sales team in the process.”

Flora is headquartered in Canada where cannabis legalization has been pioneered, but the heart of the company’s operation is in northern Colombia, where its Cosechemos cultivation, extraction, and isolation facility, draws on an experienced workforce in the country’s fertile greenbelt to produce its brands.

Colombia is itself undergoing a cannabis transformation as it enacts progressive drug policy changes, establishing a regulatory framework to govern cannabis cultivation and exports. In August, Flora announced a distribution agreement with the Misak indigenous tribe’s pharmaceutical arm, which became the first native community business to receive a license from the national Ministry of Justice for legal cannabis production for medicinal and scientific use two years ago (https://cnw.fm/8m3lp).

The deal allows Flora to take advantage of the tribe’s “unique regulatory positioning” to rapidly advance the fulfillment of cannabis exports.

Merchan anticipates that the acquisition of No Cap’s brands will ultimately position Flora as the leader in the alternative cannabinoid market segment and that No Cap’s infusion technology will boost Flora Labs’ manufacturing capabilities.

“We continue to prudently manage our overhead and working capital as we expect to improve profitability going forward. With all three of our core pillars generating revenue in the second half of 2022 … we believe we have a path to profitability that few global cannabis companies can achieve in this difficult environment,” Merchan stated in August (https://cnw.fm/8HXqS).

420 with CNW — World Anti-Doping Agency Announces That Cannabis Will Remain on Banned Substances List

Last week, the World Anti-Doping Agency announced that cannabis would remain on its list of banned substances for international athletes. This comes after a scientific review conducted by the agency and a subsequent discussion found that the use of marijuana violated the spirit of sport.

Whether a particular drug should be banned is dependent on whether the substance meets at least two out of the three criteria the organization uses in its evaluation. One of those is criteria is violating the spirit of sport. The agency also considers whether a substance represents a health risk to the athlete and whether it has the potential to improve an athlete’s performance.

In 2021, advocates urged the organization to enact a reform after Sha’Carri Richardson of the U.S. Olympic team was suspended from taking part in an Olympics event because of a positive THC test. THC is one of the primary psychoactive compounds found in marijuana, the other being CBD. Unlike CBD, however, THC causes individuals to get high.

In response, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) conducted a review of marijuana as a performance-enhancing drug. Despite this, the executive committee made the decision to uphold the drug’s prohibition.

In a press release, Olivier Niggli, the agency’s director general, stated that the question of how THC needed to be dealt with in a sports context wasn’t straightforward. Niggli continued that WADA was aware of the diversity of perceptions and opinions associated with marijuana globally as well as within various nations.

He then explained that the agency was also mindful that the requests asking for THC to be removed from the list of prohibited drugs wasn’t supported by the review conducted by experts; he noted that WADA was also conscious that the laws of most countries, as well as broad global regulatory policies and laws, supported leaving marijuana on the list.

After Richardson was suspended, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a statement regarding how international rules of cannabis needed to change. This sentiment was echoed by congressional leaders and President Joseph Biden, who signaled that the time for new policies had come.

Despite all these calls for reform, the WADA noted that the executive committee decided against changing its course. It was first reported that the agency intended to keep the ban on marijuana in place a few weeks ago. However, it hadn’t been confirmed until now.

Niggli added that the organization remained focused on conducting research in the area, particularly in relation to THC’s performance-enhancing effects.

This announcement is sure to be disappointing to athletes who had planned on using state-legal marijuana provided by companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) for medicinal or recreational purposes.

420 with CNW — Supply Chain Problems, Labor Issues Could Be Resolved by Ending Cannabis Testing

The railroad segment has experienced major upheaval in recent years as job cuts, low pay, and changes to terms and conditions led to disputes with railway worker unions and threats of a strike by railroad workers. This strike would have a significant impact on the country, affecting commuters, refineries, food producers and other industries that rely on the nationwide railroad network.

Last week, news of a tentative agreement between railways and unions indicated that the nationwide railroad strike may have been averted. However, according to a congressman known for his support of cannabis reform, the strike points to deeper labor and supply chain issues that need to be addressed right away. He noted that putting an end to cannabis testing policies could be a good first step toward resolving these issues.

During a recent appearance on a popular media house, Rep. Earl Blumenauer stated that railroad workers were facing an intolerable situation, noting that the new deal was welcome news. He explained that although railroad workers had specialized skills and traditionally received high wages, a gradual reduction of workplace benefits and job security had caused tension within the industry and could potentially exacerbate supply chain problems.

Blumenauer maintained that one solution to this would be to eliminate employment-related marijuana-testing policies, which prevented potential applicants from applying for railroad jobs and caused qualified employees to be terminated or penalized even when they were sober while on the job. A lot of the supply chain shortcomings are due to reduced employee intake, as marijuana testing policies disqualify individuals who have used cannabis in the previous six weeks even though they are qualified for the job. As a result, this increases the workload of qualified railroad workers who are already contending with eroded benefits and an extremely poor work-life balance.

Blumenauer also discussed a bipartisan cannabis research bill he’d sponsored, which had cleared the House a month ago. The measure is expected to advance through the Senate. The resolution, called the Medical Marijuana Research Act, would remove barriers to cannabis research and allow scientists to study cannabis without having to jump through the hoops required to obtain approval to conduct research on Schedule I drugs like cannabis.

This would in turn allow for the development of more accurate cannabis testing technology and make it possible to determine active cannabis impairment, something we can’t do with the technology at hand. Accurate THC impairment technology could theoretically allow employers such as railway companies to update their policies and allow off-duty cannabis use as long as workers are not impaired while on the job.

The marijuana industry is also facing its own supply chain issues, and it is up to companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC) to find ways to navigate the challenging economic conditions.
