420 with CNW – The Emerald Cup Expands to Europe

For those who may not know, the Emerald Cup can be described as the world championship for the outdoor cultivation of marijuana. This competition is held every year in California. This year, the Emerald Cup is debuting in Europe after the organizers teamed up with the organizers of Product Earth Expo-Fest held in the U.K each year.

The two entities announced their partnership at the start of this week and they plan to use the UK event in August to showcase what growers from the Emerald Triangle have to offer the rest of the world.

James Walton, the founder of Product Earth Expo-Fest, revealed that the partnership with the Emerald Cup was a natural result of the two entities sharing the common objective of showcasing the future of cannabis cultivation around the world.

Walton explains that he came up with the concept of the Expo-Fest after thinking deeply about how he could combine his love for music and his passion for the cannabis industry. He was therefore pleasantly surprised to learn that the Emerald Cup in California was doing exactly the same thing, hence the partnership.

Taylor Blake, the co-producer of the Emerald Cup admitted that he didn’t know that strains and brands from California were a big hit in Europe, and he was excited to learn that the Emerald Cup had played a big role in building those brands across the Atlantic.

Expanding to Europe will therefore give California cultivators a bigger stage on which to showcase their products, and this will result in a bigger footprint for those products in the global cannabis industry.

The August even will be held between the 23rd and the 25th of the month. The major highlights of the planned event include cannabis genetics panels which will discuss how cannabis strains have developed and continue to be developed in order to address the unique needs of different groups of consumers.

There will also be Question & Answer sessions with the best cultivators from California, workshops about cannabis production and harvest, as well as many focus groups on various aspects of the industry. And, of course, there will be plenty of music for the event attendees to enjoy as they soak up all the information that they can absorb about outdoor cannabis cultivation.

Come December this year, all eyes will be on Santa Rosa, California where this year’s edition of the Emerald Cup will be held. Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) wish the new partnership between the Emerald Cup and Product Earth Expo-Fest many years of fruitful collaboration.

420 with CNW – Data Confirms that Cannabis Sales Were Boosted on 420

Data collected shows that cannabis sales were higher on 4/20 in line with the predictions that had been made regarding the effect of the marijuana “holiday” on sales. Headset, a cannabis industry analysis company, had initially predicted a 100 percent increase in sales on that day.

The data that they collected shows that marijuana sales on 4/20 actually exceeded what had been predicted since sales increased 128 percent when compared to the volume of sales registered on the previous four Saturdays.

The report released by Headset also shows that the “eve” of 4/20 was also good for cannabis retailers since sales increased by 27 percent when compared to the sales of the previous four Fridays. Historical data shows that Fridays are normally good days for cannabis businesses, so the fact that this particular Friday happened to be the “eve” of 4/20 provided an added reason for marijuana users to open their wallets.

The report released by Headset was based on real-time data collected via the POS (point-of-sale) systems of cannabis retailers who agreed to link their systems to the data analytics system of Headset.

In terms of sales data from different states, shoppers in Maryland spent the most on cannabis on 4/20 because the average shopper spent approximately $105 before tax on that day. Shoppers in Oregon spent the least amount on that day, with the average amount spent by each buyer totaling just $36. More mature cannabis markets like Colorado and Nevada saw the average expenditure being about $50 while this figure jumped to $76 when the data on the largest marijuana market in the world (California) was analyzed.

In terms of experience level, just 25 percent of buyers where beginners while the majority of the people who bought cannabis on 4/20 were intermediate users of pot.

Two-thirds of marijuana shoppers on the holiday were people aged between 21 and 34 years of age. Senior citizens (aged 55 and above) only took 4 percent of the population of cannabis shoppers on that day.

More than half of all cannabis buyers bought cannabis flower while a third of the buyers purchased cannabis concentrates. Marijuana edibles completed the list of the products most bought on 4/20.

A further analysis shows that the most popular items on that day were the products that could be consumed as soon as a shopper left a dispensary or retail outlet. Cannabis beverages therefore registered a 136 percent growth rate when compared to other products.

Global Payout Inc. (OTC: GOHE) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) are pleased to learn that the findings of the sales data on 4/20 shows that despite increasing legalization across the U.S., cannabis hasn’t lost its novelty among buyers.

420 with CNW – Canada Preparing to Approve Second Cannabis Roadside Test Kit

The Canadian government is close to approving a second cannabis test set for use by law enforcement officers who suspect that a driver may be impaired by marijuana. The kit uses a sample of saliva to test for the presence of THC in the body of an individual flagged down for possible marijuana impairment.

The Department of Justice had earlier issued an order on April 20 to add the three pieces of equipment made by Abbot to the equipment that the police can use to get preliminary results when they suspect that someone is driving while impaired after consuming marijuana.

The three pieces of “SoToxa” equipment are used together during roadside cannabis testing. The first component is used to collect a saliva sample, the second component holds that sample while the third tests the saliva collected for THC (the psychoactive component of marijuana).

According to the Department of Justice in Canada, a positive test result would give a strong indication that the driver had recently used marijuana.

The law enforcement officer can then take the next step in the process, which is to arrest the driver and take a blood sample so that comprehensive drugs testing can be done before the person is charged.

The company which makes the SoToxa equipment claims that their test kit is easier to use and produces results faster than any other roadside test kit currently available on the market.

The SoToxa and other similar products have been introduced on the Canadian market after the country passed a law on impaired driving at the same time as the passing of the law which legalized recreational cannabis in Canada.

Currently, the fate of the SoToxa test kit may be in the hands of the public since the government has opened a 30-day window within which members of the public can review the equipment and provide feedback about its usefulness.

The kit will be approved once the feedback from the public is considered no serious defects are unearthed.

However, the issue of testing drivers for impaired driving still seems to be shrouded in controversy. For example, a commission in Michigan recently recommended that no THC limit should be indicated as the threshold to determine that someone is impaired. Several reasons were given, such as there being no scientific data to establish what concentration of THC in the blood results in impairment.

One would therefore be prompted to wonder upon what basis the Canadian government came up with a THC limit for one to be guilty of driving under the influence of marijuana.

Global Payout Inc. (OTC: GOHE) and Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) hope that the roadside tests will catch truly impaired drivers rather than those whose bodies still contain cannabis metabolites long after the person used marijuana.
