420 with CNW — Cannabis Pipe Makers Gain Recognition As Cannabis Legalization Wave Spreads

In 2003, the U.S. Department of Justice put into motion Operation Pipe Dreams, which led to hundreds of businesses and homes being raided. The $12 million operation, which involved 2,000 law enforcement officers, targeted sellers and makers of cannabis pipes. At the time, selling and making cannabis pipes was a crime, with DEA’s acting administrator John Brown noting that individuals who sold drug paraphernalia were akin to drug dealers.

The possession and use of marijuana was made illegal under federal law through the Controlled Substances Act 1970. Under the act, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I substance, together with ecstasy, LSD and heroin.

Today recreational cannabis is legal in the District of Columbia and in 18 states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois and New York. Additionally, 27 states have decriminalized marijuana, which makes the consumption of small amounts of the plant a local or civil infringement rather than a crime that may result in jail time.

National cannabis sales are expected to reach $24 billion in 2021, despite the plant being illegal on a federal scale. States such as Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts have legalized the recreational use and sale of cannabis, with Rhode Island set to in the near future.

Unlike in the past, the use of pipes in connection with marijuana use has grown, which has brought recognition to the cannabis art scene. A good example of this would be Tito Bern who has been selling his work for almost two decades. Bern is the co-founder of the Bern Gallery, which is an award-winning glass and smoke shop. In addition, ceramists such as Jess Baer, who has a studio in Massachusetts, began to sell ceramic hand-glazed pipes in 2018, after the state legalized the recreational use of marijuana in 2016.

However, the artisan glassmaking market still faces some challenges, with the biggest one being the use of cannabis vape pens. Vape pens have increased the demand for oil cartridges and reduced that of cannabis flower, which has decreased the demand for glass pipes. Additionally, the mass production of these pipes in countries such as China has slightly impacted the demand for locally made pipes, as the former are more affordable and can be found virtually anywhere.

However, the difference in price hasn’t greatly affected demand for glass pipes, seeing as most American artisans create unique pieces that require a lot of skill and are often viewed as collectibles.

It is great to observe that cannabis legalization has not only allowed companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) to thrive, but other related industries such as cannabis pipe making have also revived around the country.

420 with CNW — SAMHSA Funding Restrictions Eased in Relation to Medical Marijuana

Although more than 30 states have legalized medical marijuana and lawmakers are now working on legislation to federally deschedule cannabis, the industry has constantly been weighed down by prohibition. Thanks to marijuana’s status as a Schedule I controlled substance at the federal level, federal agencies tend to take a hard line against the substance. The Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration (“SAMHSA”) has in the past taken such a stance, unequivocally stating that its grant funds cannot be used to buy, prescribe and provide cannabis or treatment via medical marijuana.

However, cannabis reform activists will be happy to know that the SAMHSA recently softened the grant funding restrictions concerning medical cannabis. On Aug. 2, 2021, the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (“PDDAP”) noted that there had been a change in the language regarding organizations that are eligible to receive federal grants from the SAMHSA. Specifically, a recent memo from PPDAP stated that new wording had invalidated the medical cannabis restrictions, stating that SAMHSA’s policy no longer contained language prohibiting the use of grant funds for anything medical marijuana-related.

The first clause containing medical cannabis restrictions was added in 2020 and carried over to the 2021 version of the policy. However, on June 2, PDDAP officials released a memo arguing that SAMHSA’s policy, especially regarding medical marijuana, could put health funding in jeopardy. Included in the memo was a SAMHSA FAQ page, which was dated Jan. 1, 2020, and confirmed the federal agency’s stance on medical cannabis. The final question stated that the organization could not serve patients who insisted on using medical marijuana to address a mental or substance use disorder.

According to the organization, it would only promote evidence-based practices, and there was no evidence that cannabis could alleviate mental or substance use disorders. Furthermore, SAMHSA argued, there was an increasing amount of evidence showing that cannabis could aggravate mental health symptoms rather than alleviate them.

In 2019, the agency announced that it would not provide grant money to help battle opioid addiction if treatment involved consuming cannabis or cannabis products. Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, who has served as the Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services for Mental Health and Substance Use from 2017, says the medical marijuana restrictions were meant to deter individuals looking for treatment services from seeing cannabis as a tried and tested treatment.

However, now that SAMHSA has eased medical cannabis restrictions, medical cannabis programs will not be deprived of grant funding. This means good news for the industry as scientists delve deeper into cannabis’ capabilities and side effects, and more states launch medical cannabis markets.

This modification of policy clears up some of the concerns that clients of cannabis companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) have had over being caught in the middle between the medical cannabis laws of their states and the prohibitive federal policies.

420 with CNW — Study Finds That Genetics Cause Hemp Plants to Produce More THC, Not Environmental Stresses

The use of CBD in various applications, including the treatment of depression, anxiety and pain and easing symptoms associated with cancer, has made cultivating hemp for CBD a booming industry. However, when hemp contains THC that exceeds the legal limit, the crop can test “hot.”

THC is the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that gets a person high. Federal and state regulations classify hemp as containing no more than 0.3% THC, meaning that growers can lose their entire crop if the plants exceed the stipulated THC level.

Various articles and websites have claimed that biological or environmental stresses, like crop diseases or flooding, can lead to an increase in the production of THC.

However, a new study conducted by researchers from Cornell University has found no evidence to support the claims that stress increases THC concentration in hemp plants. The study was published in the “Global Change Biology-Bioenergy” journal.

Larry Smart, the study’s senior author, explained that the team’s goal in research was to decrease the risks that growers face as much as possible, noting that this particular study was conducted to prove that stresses don’t have a strong effect on THC increase, which should give hemp cultivators some comfort. Instead, Smart continued, the study proved that it was genetics rather than the  environment that determined the CBD to THC ratio and THC content in hemp.

For the research, Jacob Toth, the lead author of the study, created plots in New York that included control plots and applied five stress treatments to three high-CBD hemp cultivars that were genetically unrelated. These treatments included physical wounding, herbicide, powdery mildew, flood conditions and exposure to ethephon, which promotes fruit ripening.

The researchers then tested the CBD and THC content over a 30-day period as the flowers matured. They discovered that the amount of THC and CBD increased proportionately in all of these cultivars, noting that by harvest time, almost every plant had produced the expected CBD to THC ratio. This excludes plants treated with herbicide, as they were almost dead.

Using a molecular marker that identifies genes that produce THC in cannabis and CBD in hemp, Toth was able to demonstrate that some varieties of hemp included plants that had genes for primarily CBD production and others produced mainly THC. He noted that growers should ensure they get high-quality seeds that produce CBD and avoid varieties that have THC-producing genes, as this would decrease their risk of growing hemp plants that contain more than 0.3% THC.

This study may have huge implications for the entire cannabis sector, including companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC), since a lot more scrutiny will be needed while selecting hemp cultivars intended for CBD extraction.

420 with CNW — Researchers Identify Clues Explaining Why Low-Dose Full-Spectrum CBD Products Can Have Powerful Effects

The past five years or so have seen cannabinoids, led by THC and CBD, become immensely popular. While THC is responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effects, CBD (cannabidiol) has shown a diverse range of possible medicinal properties. Most of the research is still in the preliminary stages; however, cannabidiol has been found to be effective against various symptoms ranging from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain and epilepsy.

As CBD products became more accessible, some users noticed that full-spectrum CBD products that contain other minor cannabinoids, other than except for THC, and terpenes seemed to be more effective than CBD isolate products. In the wake of these claims, experts came up with a theory called the “entourage effect,” which states that the sum of all the chemical compounds in cannabis is better than a single cannabinoid taken on its own.

A new study by University of Sweden pharmacologists has uncovered clues on how this phenomenon, which they call the “pharmacokinetic entourage mechanism,” works, especially in regards to low-dose CBD products. According to the lead author of the study Dr. Lyndsey Anderson, cannabidiolic acid (“CBDA”) may have a greater role in the effects of low-dose CBD products.

CBDA has been found to reduce anxiety and seizures in preclinical trials, and it may very well be responsible for creating these effects when low-dose CBD products are consumed. CBDA, which is the precursor of CBD, turns into cannabidiol after the decarboxylation process. The study found that when users consume a full-spectrum CBD product, cannabinoids interact and produce cannabidiolic acid in much higher concentrations.

Compared to when CBDA was administered on its own, the full-spectrum CBD product delivered 14 times more CBDA in the bloodstream in animal trials using mice, says associate professor Jonathan Arnold with the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics. By interacting at specific transport proteins in the gut, Arnold says the range of cannabinoids in full-spectrum hemp extracts helped increase the rate of absorption of CBDA into the bloodstream. There has been little scientific proof to support the entourage effect since the theory first gained prominence, but this study has provided evidence showing that cannabinoids can interact and alter, among other things, their levels in the bloodstream, which will, in turn, affect how a CBD product will affect the user.

In this case, cannabinoids increase the levels as well as the rate of absorption of CBDA, which is known to reduce anxiety and seizures. Consequently, full-spectrum, low-dose CBD products appear to have the same anti-anxiety and anticonvulsant effects as cannabidiolic acid. The researchers, who published their study in Scientific Reports, will continue studying the entourage effect and learn how they can leverage its pharmaceutical potential.

If these findings are anything to go by, cannabis industry players such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) are offering cannabis users a great service by manufacturing high-quality CBD and other cannabis products whose ingredients remain intact.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Could Have Origins in China, Study Says

After being outlawed in most regions across the world for decades, cannabis is coming out from under the yoke of prohibition. It has been a slow process and although the sector has shown that it has plenty of potential, cannabis still has a long way to go. However, researchers are finally getting the chance to run more in-depth studies on cannabis, and they are uncovering plenty of interesting information.

For starters, a recent study has found evidence pointing to China, specifically the northwest region of China, as home to the first domesticated cannabis and hemp. The common assumption is that cannabis sativa originated from East Asia, but its illegality over the past century has prevented research into its history and use. The study team, helmed by Swiss and Chinese researchers, took advantage of loosening cannabis restrictions and conducted an in-depth study on the history of cannabis and hemp.

The researchers concluded that the cannabis sativa species likely emerged from China’s northwest region by an estimated 10,000 to 3,000 BC (Neolithic period). According to a news release by the journal that published the study, “Science Advances,” cannabis and hemp were among the very first plants to be domesticated by humans, with humans using hemp to produce textiles, food and oilseed.

To arrive at these conclusions, the team compiled 110 whole genomes covering everything from different feral, wild-growing plants and domesticated varieties to modern hemp hybrids and psychoactive cannabis. They separated their genomic analysis samples into four different groups, including basal cannabis which is usually found in the United States and China. The data suggested that basal cannabis diverged from the ancestors of modern marijuana and hemp nearly 12,000 years ago, giving weight to the theory that by that point in history, the cannabis sativa species had been domesticated already. Furthermore, the study says, it coincides with ancient artifacts such as pottery from Southern China, Japan and Taiwan that has been dated to that period.

Once humans in the Neolithic period had domesticated cannabis, it spread across the Middle East and Europe during the Bronze Age, appearing in India nearly 3,000 years ago after likely being introduced with other crops from China, the study says. Cannabis arrived in Africa during the 13th century and traveled to Latin America in the 16th century before reaching North America at the start of the 20th century.

The closest descendants to the ancient hemp and marijuana are modern Chinese cannabis, altered by years of cultivation, and feral, wild-growing cannabis plants, the study says. However, it is likely that the cannabis sativa’s pure wild ancestors have gone extinct.

It is amazing how much researchers continue to learn about marijuana. Sector players such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) must be having their own fair share of surprising discoveries about this versatile yet controversial plant.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Hero Technologies Inc.’s (HENC) Business Strategy Reaffirmed as Trend Moves Toward Greenhouse Cultivation

Hero Technologies (OTC: HENC) has a majority stake in BlackBox Systems and Technologies LLC, an aeroponic cannabis cultivation system that provides optimal conditions in greenhouses to enhance photosynthesis and produce large flowering plants. Thus, the trend toward greenhouse cultivation is welcome news for HENC. A recent article reads, “According to a recent five-year study of the cannabis industry, greenhouse production is a leading choice for cannabis cultivation companies (https://cnw.fm/R9t7G). The report, published by ‘Cannabis Business Times,’ reaffirms the business strategy of Hero Technologies.” It noted that greenhouse production continues to be the top tool for reducing the initial and operational costs for a 52-week production facility. “‘Nearly a third of greenhouse cultivators also report average production costs of less than $100 per pound of dried flower, compared to 11% of indoor cultivators.’ The trend toward greenhouse cultivation is understandable when looking at the bottom line. The report noted that, in 2020, the average cost to grow a pound of dried flower was $396 for warehouse or indoor cultivation sites, and more than $150 less ($233) to grow the same amount in a greenhouse.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Hero Technologies Inc. (HENC) Further Diversifies, Executes Growth Strategy Through MassCannabis

Hero Technologies (OTC: HENC) recently moved to capitalize on the potential of the Massachusetts market by forming a subsidiary, MassCannabis, to seek property or land acquisition opportunities in the state and potentially initiate dispensary projects. “Last year, the nonmedical cannabis market in Massachusetts hit a significant milestone: $1 billion in sales since the state voted to legalize the substance — this even though the state was one of only a handful that closed cannabis shops for a period of time because of COVID-19,” reads a recent article. According to Hero Technologies CEO Gina Serkasevich, “In forming our new MassCannabis subsidiary, we have taken another key step in executing our growth strategy as a multi-state operator (‘MSO’) and diversified our vertically integrated business model… Massachusetts is clearly a fast-growing cannabis market and expanding our footprint there would extend our geographical reach in the U.S. and diversify our addressable market.”

420 with CNW — How an Aeroponic Grow System Works

Ever heard of aeroponics? Well, if you haven’t, it is the process of growing plants in a mist or air environment without using soil. Instead of using soil, the roots dangle in the air and are sprayed with solutions laden with nutrients needed for growth, using specially designed devices. Aeroponic systems utilize soilless growing mediums, liquid nutrients and water to efficiently and quickly grow nutritious produce.

To grow plants using this system, seeds are placed in pieces of foam, which are placed into tiny pots. The pots are then exposed to mist that’s filled with nutrients on one end and light on the other. The system uses foam as it holds the roots and stem in place as the plant grows.

Research has found that not using a growing medium, such as soil, is actually good for plants, as their roots are exposed to extra oxygen, which prompts even faster growth. Aeroponic systems have also been found to be extremely water-efficient because they use roughly 90% less water than plants that are irrigated in soil.

This is in addition to being an eco-friendly way to grow large quantities of food in tiny spaces, through the use of towers and other vertical approaches.

So, what can you grow using aeroponic systems?

Similar to hydroponic systems, these systems are mainly used to grow cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, cannabis, culinary herbs and leafy greens. You can also grow root crops using aeroponic systems, which isn’t possible in a hydroponic system, as the roots won’t have a lot of room to grow and will be harder to access when harvesting.

However, the systems do have some disadvantages. These include:

  • Relying on electricity to pump water through the devices used for misting. This can, however, be remedied through the use of solar power and other alternative sources of energy in order to reduce the energy consumption of the cultivation process.
  • Skill required for effective operation. Ensuring that your crops receive the right amount of nutrients may be a bit of a challenge, as even a slight deviation from the parameters stipulated may lead to their loss. Skill is therefore required to use this method.
  • Quality professional systems that are equipped with a backup power supply and automated nutrient monitoring go for four figures or more. It should be noted that DIY models can be built for as little as $100 or even less.

If you’re interested in aeroponic systems and would like to use them to grow herbs and the like, ensure that you have an enclosure that can prevent light from reaching the plant roots, which can also hold in the humidity.

Cannabis companies such as Hero Technologies Inc. (OTC: HENC) have taken to growing marijuana using aeroponics, and this not only produces high-quality yields but also lowers the possible adverse ecological effects of marijuana growing.
