Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Maintains Late 2022/Early 2023 for Full IND Application for DehydraTECH-CBD

  • Lexaria, through its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology, is improving the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals and therapeutics (in part) by bypassing first-pass-liver processing, thereby achieving an improved speed of onset, and brain absorption of APIs
  • Hypertension currently affects nearly 50% of all American adults, with the American Heart Association describing it as a “silent killer”, and is now being studied for its effects during pregnancy
  • The company has received positive feedback for its pre-Investigational New Drug meeting from the FDA and has reported that it remains on track to file its full IND application by late 2022/early 2023
  • It looks to capitalize on the growth of the antihypertension market, which is set to hit $40 billion by 2031, up from $30.2 billion in 2021

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, has been on an aggressive push to perfect its potential hypertension treatment, building on its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology. Through improving the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals and therapeutics (in part) by bypassing first-pass-liver processing, Lexaria can achieve an improved speed of onset, and brain absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”), which is integral to the overall treatment of conditions including but not limited to hypertension.

The American Heart Association (“AHA”) has described hypertension or high blood pressure as a “silent killer,” with nearly 50% of American adults having the condition (https://cnw.fm/P7rGD). In addition, hypertension during pregnancy comes with severe short-term risks for both mothers and their offspring, although treating the condition among these individuals is still being studied.

A recent Chronic Hypertension And Pregnancy (“CHAP”) study by Tita and colleagues sought to offer more insights into hypertension treatment during pregnancy. With over 2400 participants involved, the group noted that supporting treatment of mild chronic hypertension in pregnancy improved pregnancy outcomes. According to the study’s results, this was primarily due to a reduction in preeclampsia with severe features in medically indicated preterm birth (https://cnw.fm/DG23v).

Typically, the risks associated with hypertension in pregnancy include stroke, pulmonary oedema, acute kidney injury, preeclampsia and eclampsia, placental abruption, or even death. To the offspring, the effects can include preterm birth, birth at small-for-gestational age, or even perinatal death (https://cnw.fm/wW9xF). With such risks, there is a need for effective hypertension treatments during pregnancy. Lexaria is looking to meet that demand.

Through its DehydraTECH technology, Lexaria is looking to meet the serious unmet need in the antihypertension medication market in general and during pregnancy. It aims to achieve this by directly pushing for its products and technology and licensing it for delivering fat-soluble active molecules and drugs to strategic partners worldwide.

Lexaria is also looking to capitalize on the growth of the antihypertension drugs market, which is set to hit $40 billion by 2031, up from $30.2 billion in 2021 (https://cnw.fm/VODXl). It also hopes to carve out a significant market share globally and in the United States.

Lexaria’s management is optimistic about the company’s current trajectory. It is confident that with time, its DehydraTECH-CBD for the treatment of hypertension will receive approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”).

The company has so far received positive feedback from its pre-Investigational New Drug meeting (“IND”). John Docherty, Lexaria’s President, has even expressed the company’s delight, citing how helpful this feedback will be in compiling and filing its IND application. As a result, Lexaria remains on track to file its full IND application with the FDA by late 2022/early 2023, as previously announced (https://cnw.fm/ytrV5).

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Moves to Address Adverse Effects of Hypertension with DehydraTECH(TM) – CBD

  • Lexaria is a drug delivery technology company developing DehydraTECH-CBD as a prospective registered treatment for hypertension and potentially other disease states beyond hypertension
  • The company has undertaken multiple de-risking hypertension studies that have not only evidenced that DehydraTECH-CBD is safe and well tolerated, but have also shown that it reduces blood pressure and arterial stiffness
  • Hypertension is a leading contributor to deaths in the United States, damaging organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, yet only a tiny proportion of patients have it under control

Hypertension, an area of interest and focus for drug delivery technology company Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), has many harmful effects on the body, its organs, and overall personal health. Hypertension, or high blood pressure is a condition characterized by consistent exertion of elevated pressure – at least 130/80 mmHg – on blood vessels. This pressure, analyses have shown, causes the walls of blood vessels to become less stretchy or elastic, narrowing their internal cross-sectional area and ultimately damaging them (https://cnw.fm/cVeTX).

As a result, blood flow drastically reduces, and in a cascade of events, the flow of oxygen to the heart also declines. This has been linked to heart disease, heart attack, and heart failure. Nonetheless, the reduced blood flow does not only impact the functionality of the heart but also other organs, including the brain and kidneys. In fact, high BP is the second leading cause of kidney failure in the United States (https://cnw.fm/84MeZ).

Despite their relatively small size, kidneys serve as the body’s filtration system – they remove toxins, extra fluid, and waste from the blood through filtering units known as nephrons. The narrowing of blood vessels due to hypertension, however, deprives the nephrons of oxygen and other essential nutrients, impeding their normal function. This causes excess build-up of fluid and waste in the blood, which can, in turn, elevate the blood pressure even further. At the same time, kidneys also regulate blood pressure by responding to the hormone aldosterone. Therefore, they trigger a further elevation in blood pressure if and when they cannot function well due to the above events.

The various effects of hypertension point to the importance of keeping the condition under control. And although it can even lead to death and is, in fact, one of the leading causes of death in the United States, awareness, diagnosis, and management are still considerably low. According to the World Health Organization (“WHO”), about 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware they have the condition. At the same time, only about 42% of adults with high BP are diagnosed and treated, while only 21% of hypertensive adults have the condition under control (https://cnw.fm/mNYEy).

These statistics are worrying in light of the myriad consequences of high blood pressure, which is why Lexaria has focused its attention on finding a safe and effective treatment. The company, which created a patented drug delivery technology called DehydraTECH that can be applied in broad use within the pharmaceutical industry, is positioning DehydraTECH-processed cannabidiol (“CBD”) as a potential treatment for hypertension.

“Our biggest area of investigation in 2021 was CBD for hypertension and heart disease, and we enjoyed a very successful year in this regard,” wrote Lexaria CEO Chris Bunka in his 2022 letter to shareholders (https://cnw.fm/EiOET). “This year [2021], we evidenced that human blood pressure dropped within minutes of swallowing DehydraTECH-CBD capsules, after just a single dose… At selected times during the 24-hour [HYPER-H21-2 follow-up] study, volunteers with mild to moderate hypertension averaged as much as a 20 mmHg (i.e., 23%) decrease in BP relative to placebo. This is a large response after a single day of dosing, and we were encouraged by these results.”

In total, the company conducted three de-risking studies in 2021, with the third, HYPER-H21-3, showing that DehydraTECH-CBD reduced pulmonary systolic pressure by ~5 mmHg or 41% overall in male participants. Throughout all three studies, Lexaria evidenced no significant adverse effects with DehydraTECH-CBD.

In July this year, Lexaria completed dosing for its largest hypertension study yet, HYPER-H21-4, reporting no serious adverse events (https://cnw.fm/v80c2). Sixty-six patients were dosed in the study over five weeks, conforming to the company’s initial desire to evaluate a “large enough group to obtain reliable, statistically significant data and a long enough study duration to witness the true power of DehydraTECH-CBD in modulating BP.”

“If this study is successful, we feel strongly that it will be highly supportive of our Investigational New Drug (“IND”) filing plan, and we will have a clear path toward designs of Phase I and even potentially Phase II FDA-registered clinical studies thereunder,” Bunka continued. Lexaria expects to release the results in due course.

By developing DehydraTECH-CBD as a prospective registered treatment for hypertension and potentially other disease states beyond hypertension, Lexaria hopes to provide hypertensive patients with safe, well-tolerated, and effective medication to help them manage their condition, consequently preventing adverse effects such as kidney disease.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp.’s (NASDAQ: LEXX) Potential Hypertension Medication Poised to Reduce Risk of Blood-Pressure-Induced Dementia, Cognitive Decline

  • Lexaria Bioscience is a global innovator in drug delivery platforms that has developed the patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology for improved delivery of bioactive compounds
  • The company is currently evaluating DehydraTECH-processed CBD as a potential treatment for high blood pressure
  • Long-term studies have shown that high blood pressure can increase the risk of developing dementia in later life
  • Experts, however, believe that hypertension medication could slow the pace of the cognitive decline
  • In addition to helping hypertension patients keep their condition under control, Lexaria’s DehydraTECH-CBD, which has so far been shown to be safe and well tolerated, could potentially help reduce the risk of dementia

Blood pressure or BP typically refers to the pressure exerted by circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels, particularly large arteries and veins. This pressure fluctuates throughout the day depending on the activity in which one engages. However, in some instances, it can consistently cross the normal threshold, a condition known as high blood pressure or hypertension. Usually, and based on a 2017 guideline, a person is said to have high BP when the top reading on the blood pressure monitor, which represents the systolic blood pressure, is greater than 130 mmHg while the bottom reading, which denotes the diastolic pressure, is above 80 mmHg (https://cnw.fm/NVuKL).

The constant exertion of elevated pressure on blood vessels damages them by making them less elastic. According to the Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”), this decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart and other body organs. And it is this depressed blood flow that causes progressive damage to organs such as the brain. Long-term research studies have, in fact, shown that high blood pressure among people who are around 40 to 64 years old can increase the risk of developing dementia in later life (https://cnw.fm/jlsp7).

One such study, which probed the relationship between high blood pressure and later-life cognition and was published recently in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, found that “people with high blood pressure levels face faster erosion of their ability to think, make decisions, and remember information than those with normal blood pressure levels” (https://cnw.fm/dc192). And although the study’s findings suggest that hypertension causes faster cognitive decline, they fortunately also indicate that taking antihypertensive drugs could slow the pace of that decline, according to the study’s lead author Deborah Levine, M.D., M.P.H, the director of the Cognitive Health Services Research Program at the University of Michigan.

But while hypertension medication is linked to such benefits, patients often shun them, citing their adverse side effects. The resulting suboptimal adherence to existing drugs has given rise to a worrying statistic – according to the CDC, only about 24% of adults with hypertension have it under control, yet the condition causes over 670,000 deaths every year in the United States alone (https://cnw.fm/z3uul).

However, one company, a publicly traded global innovator in drug delivery technology known as Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), is out to improve medication adherence and subsequently help prevent the cognitive decline linked to high blood pressure. For Lexaria and the hypertension patients it is targeting, the solution, which is still under development and evaluation, lies in DehydraTECH(TM)-processed cannabidiol (“CBD”).

In isolation, CBD has exhibited vasodilatory and antioxidant properties in humans and animals (https://cnw.fm/ivs39). Its positive effects on blood pressure have also been documented in various research articles, with one such study, which sampled 26 healthy males who were given 600 mg of CBD or placebo orally for seven days, finding that CBD reduces blood pressure at rest after a single dose, although the effect is lost after seven days of treatment. Still, the study showed that CBD resulted in prolonged BP reduction during stressful situations (https://cnw.fm/uk4w0).

These positive results notwithstanding, CBD is known to have a low oral bioavailability – the proportion of the ingested drug that enters the circulation. According to various reports, the oral bioavailability of CBD stands at approximately 6% (https://cnw.fm/8uDkQ), suggesting that users could potentially extract greater BP-related benefits.  For Lexaria, which had developed and patented the DehydraTECH technology that enhances the bioavailability and bioabsorption of various lipophilic active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”), this represented an opportunity that the company then exploited by processing CBD with DehydraTECH.

In a 2018 study, Lexaria observed that DehydraTECH delivered 317% more CBD to the blood than controls. And since then, the company has undertaken multiple human clinical studies. In three of the four studies, Lexaria has evidenced that DehydraTECH-CBD results in a rapid and sustained drop in BP, causes a 23% average reduction in overnight blood pressure and reduced arterial stiffness, and triggers attenuated pulmonary artery systolic pressure (https://cnw.fm/9DdBv). Results are pending from Lexaria’s largest ever human clinical trial, where dosing completed in July.

Backed by the positive findings, Lexaria sought and held a pre-Investigational New Drug (“IND”) meeting with the U.S. FDA, whereupon it received positive feedback and confirmation that supports an abbreviated regulatory pathway in line with section 505(b)(2) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (“FD&C Act”). Currently, the company is undertaking requisite processes that are expected to culminate in the filing of an IND application later this year or early next year (https://cnw.fm/6fBVu). Upon submitting the IND filing and receiving a response from the FDA, Lexaria will have the green light to proceed with registered clinical trials.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp.’s (NASDAQ: LEXX) DehydraTECH(TM) Holds Potential to Represent Multiple Commercial Opportunities

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX), a drug delivery platform innovator, last year announced a review of its successful 2021 antiviral drug program. “Lexaria specifically probed the bioavailability of five DehydraTECH(TM)-processed antiviral drugs for SARS-CoV-2, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases from three drug classes, evidencing significant gains with up to a three-fold increase in oral drug delivery into the bloodstream. The demonstrated improvements in absorption, Lexaria believed, could have significant commercial potential considering that many antiviral drugs typically show low oral bioavailability in their available form because of significant liver biotransformation and/or poor intestinal uptake,” reads a recent article. “Lexaria’s vision for DehydraTECH is not limited to antiviral drugs as the company is also focusing on other possible mainstream applications of its disruptive drug delivery platform, including but not limited to oral nicotine and cannabidiol (‘CBD’). Pharmacokinetic studies evaluating these compounds have, in fact, shown that DehydraTECH delivers higher quantities of these APIs in less time… DehydraTECH’s ability to increase the performance of different APIs represents multiple commercial opportunities that, when tapped, could potentially address serious unmet patient needs.”

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Using Novel DehydraTECH(TM) Technology to Address Unmet Antihypertension Drug Market

  • Research has shown that co-occurring conditions may be linked to high blood pressure, including bone aging and mental illness
  • The antihypertension drug market is anticipated to rise due to the launch of novel pharmaceuticals and diagnostic agents
  • Valued at US $30.2 billion in 2021, the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3%, resulting in a value of US $40 billion by 2031
  • Lexaria’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology offers higher bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients due to, in part, bypassing first-pass-liver processing, improving the speed of onset, and brain absorption

The American Heart Association (“AMA”) refers to high blood pressure, or hypertension, as a “silent killer.” Nearly half of American adults have hypertension but do not know it because there are no obvious symptoms correlating to the condition. However, research finds that co-occurring conditions may be linked to high blood pressure, including bone aging and mental illness.

A recent study conducted by the AMA has found that hypertension may be linked to significant bone loss. The bone quality in younger mice with hypertension was similar to the bones of older mice without hypertension present. The study suggests that the effects of hypertension on the bones may mimic aging – making early detection and treatment a necessity to deter excessive bone loss as people age (https://cnw.fm/AK70Y).

Additionally, a study published by the National Library of Medicine concluded that individuals with mental illnesses had increased blood pressure variability (“BPV”), regardless of age. Since mental illness contributes to the deterioration of autonomic functions, early therapeutic interventions for mental illness may prevent diseases associated with autonomic dysregulation and reduce the likelihood of negative cardiac outcomes (https://cnw.fm/NXtnb).

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery, has developed a patented technology, DehydraTECH(TM), that has been proven useful for potentially treating hypertension. DehydraTECH improves the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals and therapeutics (in part) by bypassing first-pass-liver processing, improving the speed of onset, and brain absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”). The company began developing this technology in 2014 and has since strengthened and broadened the technology to an unprecedented degree.

Lexaria operates four subsidiaries to focus on its different commercial opportunities in their respective industries: Lexaria Pharmaceutical Corp., which investigates new products for hypertension, anti-viral treatments, epilepsy and other drug classes; Lexaria Nicotine LLC (16.67% owned by Altria Ventures Inc.), which investigates oral non-combusted tobacco-derived nicotine product formats; Lexaria Hemp Corp., which pursues business-to-business opportunities with cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (“CBD”) from hemp; and Lexaria Canpharm ULC., which operates a state-of-the-art Health Canada licensed laboratory capable of developing novel psychotropic cannabinoid formulations for potential commercialization in the sectors where it is federally legal to do so.

Lexaria also licenses its DehydraTECH(TM) technology for delivering fat-soluble active molecules and drugs. The company has over 50 pending patents worldwide and 27 granted patents.

The market for antihypertension drugs is anticipated to rise due to the launch of novel pharmaceuticals and diagnostic agents. Valued at US $30.2 billion in 2021, the market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3%, resulting in a value of US $40 billion by 2031. There is a serious unmet need in the antihypertension medication market, which includes a shortage of viable products. Lexaria is leveraging its position and DehydraTECH technology to meet the unmet needs in the market and the demand for new approaches to lower blood pressure.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp.’s (NASDAQ: LEXX) Drug Development Program Seeking to Provide Safe, Well-Tolerated, Effective Antihypertensive Medication Amid Continued Reports of Suboptimal Adherence to Existing Treatments

  • Lexaria Bioscience, a global innovator in drug delivery technology, has developed a potential treatment for hypertension using the company’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) platform, now shown in several human studies to reduce blood pressure and arterial stiffness
  • Lexaria’s antihypertensive drug development program comes at a time when researchers are documenting poor control of hypertension among both men and women, partly due to suboptimal adherence to existing antihypertension medication
  • Reasons advanced for the suboptimal adherence include lack of awareness or treatment, increased number of prescribed medications, and major adverse effects of the prescribed drugs
  • Lexaria has so far shown that its DehydraTECH-CBD is not only effective but also well tolerated and is planning to undertake registered clinical trials in pursuit of the FDA’s approval of the drug candidate

A recent research article published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (“AHA”) unearths data that suggests poorly controlled hypertension among both men and women (https://cnw.fm/q4IM3), a problem global innovator Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) is keen on solving.

The researchers, who sought to describe gender-differential disease patterns and results of more than 20.6 million emergency department encounters in the United States from 2016 to 2018, made several observations. Firstly, most ED cardiovascular (“CVD”) visits in the sample were due to hypertensive diseases. Secondly, essential hypertension, which is high blood pressure not resulting from other maladies, was the most common CVD diagnosis in women and second most common in men (https://cnw.fm/5powB).

Moreover, the article notes, “Attendances for essential hypertension were more common in women, which may reflect higher rate of preexisting hypertension in women (76.6% vs. 74.4%). These findings may also reflect poorer control of hypertension or poorer access to primary care in women… Further supporting these suppositions, in our sample, although men were less likely to present to the ED with essential hypertension, they were slightly more likely to present with long-term consequences of hypertension-related end-organ damage (hypertensive heart or kidney disease) and were more likely to die following such presentations, suggesting longer duration of exposure to poorly controlled hypertension than women.”

This recent study is one of the latest in a series of research works on uncontrolled hypertension that date back to the 20th century. In a scholarly article published in 2005 in the AHA Journal, for example, researchers observed a high prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension that suggested a significant number of CVD events could be prevented by improved blood pressure control.

“The benefits of pharmacological treatment for [hypertensive] patients are well established. Meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials indicate that antihypertensive therapy reduces the risk of stroke by approximately 30%, coronary heart disease by 10-20%, congestive heart failure by 40-50%, and total mortality by 10%,” the 2005 research article continues (https://cnw.fm/HcLPN).

Several other studies have put forth reasons that are thought to cause suboptimal adherence, leading to poor control. These reasons include the lack of awareness or treatment, an increased number of antihypertensive drugs, and major adverse effects, just to mention a few (https://cnw.fm/gJfBD). As this happens, hypertension remains the leading cause of noncommunicable disease deaths globally, raising concerns that have caught the attention of Lexaria, a company developing a potential hypertension treatment with little to no side effects.

The treatment is created by processing cannabidiol (“CBD”) using the company’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) drug delivery technology, which has been shown to substantially increase the bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”). In human studies, Lexaria has shown that DehydraTECH-CBD not only increases the amount of CBD in the blood by as much as 317% but also reduces blood pressure and arterial stiffness.

To put these findings into a more comprehensive context, the company’s 24-person human clinical study, christened HYPER-H21-1, evidenced a rapid and sustained drop in blood pressure. The second study, HYPER-H21-2, a 16-person HCS, showed up to a 23% reduction in overnight blood pressure as well as reduced arterial stiffness, while the third study, HYPER-H21-3, evidenced attenuated pulmonary artery systolic pressure. What the three studies had in common was that no serious adverse events were reported, suggesting that DehydraTECH-CBD is well tolerated (https://cnw.fm/hUxCf).

To further confirm this fact, Lexaria is working toward a planned Phase I(b) trial, expected to commence following the filing of an Investigational New Drug (“IND”) application and the fulfillment of other regulatory requirements. According to the company, the IND-enabling program is currently underway and is expected to be completed later this year or early next year (https://cnw.fm/suz4F).

Lexaria hopes to prove, through registered clinical trials, that its DehydraTECH-CBD formulation has an acceptable safety and tolerability profile and that it is effective against hypertension. The proof could potentially influence the registration of DehydraTECH-CBD as the second FDA-approved CBD drug, offering a reprieve to millions of hypertension patients who do not have their condition under control because they receive numerous antihypertensive drugs or are unwilling to suffer through these medications’ adverse side effects.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp.’s (NASDAQ: LEXX) DehydraTECH(TM) Pipeline Addressing Severe Unmet Patient Needs

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX), a biotechnology company focusing its attention and resources on pursuing the enhancement of the bioavailability of a diverse and broad range of active pharmaceutical ingredients, developed the patented DehydraTECH(TM) drug delivery technology. “The company has evidenced, through in-vivo, in-vitro and pre-clinical testing, that DehydraTECH delivers more APIs at a faster rate than controls, enabling more effective drug absorption. The testing has so far involved APIs such as cannabidiol (‘CBD’), PDE5 inhibitors, antiviral drugs, and nicotine, each at different stages of product development. This DehydraTECH pipeline, Lexaria says, is addressing severe unmet patient needs. Its DehydraTECH-CBD compound, for example, specifically targets the hypertension space,” reads a recent article. “In the U.S., about 47% of adults, or 116 million people, have hypertension, with only about 24% having the condition under control, while globally, hypertension affects more than 1 billion people, or about 30% of the adult population… Heightened blood pressure has several consequences, including the fact that it makes arteries less elastic, effectively damaging them. This damage, in turn, decreases the blood flow and oxygen to the heart, leading to heart disease. The decreased blood flow also increases the risk of stroke. In extreme cases, hypertension causes death.”

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Using Patented DehydraTECH(TM) Technology to Fight America’s Silent Killer – Hypertension

  • Three out of four adults living with hypertension do not have the condition under control, putting them at risk for other serious complications
  • Lexaria’s proposed therapy for hypertension is the highly efficient DehydraTECH-CBD, which has presented with no serious adverse side effects in test participants
  • Dominated by the North American market, the global antihypertension drug market accounted for $22,557 million in 2018 and is expected to reach $28,797 million by 2026

In the United States, over 121.5 million adults are affected by high blood pressure – with statistics stacked against people of color, those with a family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, or kidney disease, and women who experienced blood pressure problems during pregnancy. According to the American Heart Association, high blood pressure is defined as a systolic pressure of 130 or higher and a diastolic pressure of 80 or higher that stays high over a period of time (https://cnw.fm/dbCLN).

For some, managing high blood pressure is as simple as changing daily habits or being proactive about monitoring it if there is a history or predisposition to the disease. Early detection can protect the brain, reducing the risk of stroke, dementia, and other vascular diseases that affect the brain. Although high blood pressure is not the only risk factor associated, being conscious of it can help preserve the brain’s blood vessels. Unfortunately, three out of four adults do not have their high blood pressure under control, creating an unmet need in the hypertension treatment market.

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, is using its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology to address the unmet needs of adults with high blood pressure (hypertension). DehydraTECH is a patented drug delivery technology that improves the oral administration of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (“APIs”). The benefits of using DehydraTECH-enabled APIs include the following:

  • Improvement of onset speed – effects of the drug are felt in minutes
  • Masked unwanted tastes – eliminates the need for sugar-filled edibles
  • Increased bioavailability – the technology is more effective at delivering the drug into the bloodstream
  • Increased brain absorption – testing has seen up to 27x improvement in the amount of the drug crossing the blood-brain barrier
  • Reduction in drug administration costs – the higher ratio of the drug being delivered is expected to lower the overall costs of administration

Lexaria’s initial focus on hypertension has been its DehydraTECH-CBD, which is currently in the IND enabling studies phase and is actively developing lead product pipeline candidates. The advanced hypertension program has delivered positive results with no serious adverse effects, with the most recent being completed in 2021, with 16 participants exhibiting a reduction of attenuated pulmonary artery systolic pressure of approximately 5 mmHg, or 41% overall, in male participants. The company’s corporate presentation lists all of the results – from 2018-2021 (https://cnw.fm/0by1r). Results are pending from Lexaria’s largest ever human clinical trial, where dosing completed in July.

According to Allied Market Research, the global antihypertension drug market accounted for $22,557 million in 2018 and is expected to reach $28,797 million by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 3.1% from 2019 to 2026. North America dominates the majority of the drug market. The market’s growth is expected due to the prevalence of hypertension across the globe and the interest in maintaining healthier lifestyles in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic (https://cnw.fm/5vqaT).

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Working to Address Declining Antihypertensive Intensification and High Prescription Abandonment Rates, with DehydraTECH-CBD

  • Lexaria is a global innovator in drug delivery platforms developing DehydraTECH-CBD as a potential treatment for hypertension
  • A 2022 study documented a decline in the percentage of patients receiving appropriate treatment intensification over the last ten years
  • This decline has been attributed to, among other possible reasons, the side effects of antihypertensive drugs
  • At the same time, only 24% of adults with hypertension have the condition under control, a statistic attributable to the medications’ troublesome side effects
  • Lexaria’s investigations of its DehydraTECH-CBD have so far presented favorable safety and tolerability data, meaning its drug candidate could offer reprieve to millions looking for antihypertensive drugs with little or no side effects

A recent study published in the American Heart Association (“AHA”) journal Hypertension concluded that “appropriate treatment intensification for older adults with hypertension in the United States was suboptimal over the past decade” (https://cnw.fm/jlEvr). The study results showed the percentage of patients receiving appropriate treatment intensification – described as the addition of an antihypertensive drug to the patient’s care for high blood pressure – had declined over the ten years across all the three blood pressure targets used.

The study sampled adults aged 60 and older who visited their primary care provider and previously had been diagnosed with hypertension, with the researchers focusing on patients that had undergone appropriate antihypertensive intensification.

Although the study did not discuss the reasons behind the decline, a recent article analyzing the findings (https://cnw.fm/baPSc) highlighted several theories that the study’s senior author Dr. Kenneth Mukamal offered. Per Dr. Mukamal, the decline might have resulted from “doctors’ concerns that blood pressure-lowering drugs might cause older adults to fall, patients’ reluctance to add more medications that might have more side effects, [and the difficulty faced by] primary care providers to treat high blood pressure aggressively in a typical 15-minute visit.”

Dr. Mukamal’s theories document an existing concern. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (“CDC”), only about 24% of adults with hypertension have the condition under control (https://cnw.fm/nredv). A commonly cited reason for this low statistic is that patients stop taking their medication largely because of troublesome side effects. Even so, a solution, which is being developed for patients with hypertension by drug delivery platforms innovator Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), may be on the horizon (https://cnw.fm/ZZTzQ).

Packaged in the form of enhanced cannabidiol (“CBD”), whose bioavailability properties have been improved by the company’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) drug delivery technology, the solution, known simply as DehydraTECH-CBD, may potentially address the low antihypertensive intensification as well as the relatively high prescription abandonment rates for hypertension drugs.

DehydraTECH-CBD has so far undergone animal and human studies as part of preliminary investigations designed to provide crucial data that would back Lexaria’s pursuit of registration for Phase Ib clinical trials.  The preliminary research showed that DehydraTECH delivered 317% more CBD to the blood 30 minutes after ingestion, a remarkable improvement considering the oral bioavailability of CBD is estimated at 6% (https://cnw.fm/oDTwJ).

Further human studies showed that DehydraTECH-CBD resulted in a rapid and prolonged drop in blood pressure, reduced arterial stiffness, and attenuated pulmonary artery systolic pressure. Generally, the studies yielded compelling CBD safety and tolerability data that were further reinforced by the company’s fourth human study, HYPER-H21-4, whose dosing Lexaria completed this summer. (Studies are available at https://cnw.fm/h3fM4https://cnw.fm/BnCMI, and https://cnw.fm/4PwbY.

“We are extremely pleased that dosing has been completed on time in this multiweek clinical study without any adverse events having occurred,” said Lexaria CEO Chris Bunka of the fourth human study. “Demonstrating a noteworthy safety and tolerability profile relative to conventional antihypertensive medications is one of Lexaria’s major goals with this program, and avoiding serious adverse events at clinically efficacious doses will be a primary requirement to achieve eventual regulatory marketing authorizations.”

Although CBD is usually well tolerated, it could cause liver toxicity in the high therapeutic doses required to treat conditions such as epilepsy or hypertension. Currently, there is only one FDA-approved CBD therapeutic, branded Epidiolex, used to treat seizures at a maximum approved dose of up to 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, given twice a day. But Lexaria believes DehydraTECH’s ability to increase CBD’s bioavailability could reduce the dose prescribed to patients (https://cnw.fm/zzC4C).

With an eye on potentially delivering the second-ever FDA-approved CBD drug, Lexaria is working with the FDA to commence registered clinical trials and is on course to file an Investigational New Drug (“IND”) application in late 2022 or early 2023.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Focusing on Multiple Mainstream Applications of Its Disruptive Patented DehydraTECH(TM) Technology

  • Lexaria is the drug delivery platform innovator behind the disruptive, patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology
  • DehydraTECH is designed to enhance the performance of fat-soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”), molecules, and drugs by increasing their bioavailability
  • Through animal and human studies, Lexaria has shown that DehydraTECH increases the bioavailability of antiviral drugs, CBD, oral nicotine and more
  • The company is focusing on multiple mainstream applications of its technology that rerrcould address serious unmet patient needs
  • Lexaria is currently keen on developing a potential treatment for hypertension

Last summer, drug delivery platform innovator Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) announced a review of its successful 2021 antiviral drug program. The program, which aimed to determine whether the processing of leading antiviral drugs using its patented DehydraTECH could exhibit evidence of superior oral absorption relative to controls; whether DehydraTECH processing of these compounds would preserve the expected viral inhibitory performance; and whether DehydraTECH does not alter or degrade the drug molecules chemically, met all three of these objectives (https://cnw.fm/Nncql).

Lexaria specifically probed the bioavailability of five DehydraTECH-processed antiviral drugs for SARS-CoV-2, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases from three drug classes, evidencing significant gains with up to a three-fold increase in oral drug delivery into the bloodstream. The demonstrated improvements in absorption, Lexaria believed, could have significant commercial potential considering that many antiviral drugs typically show low oral bioavailability in their available form because of significant liver biotransformation and/or poor intestinal uptake.

Lexaria’s vision for DehydraTECH is not limited to antiviral drugs as the company is also focusing on other possible mainstream applications of its disruptive drug delivery platform, including but not limited to oral nicotine and cannabidiol (“CBD”). Pharmacokinetic studies evaluating these compounds have, in fact, shown that DehydraTECH delivers higher quantities of these APIs in less time. For instance, compared to controls, DehydraTECH-CBD delivered 317% more CBD to the blood a half hour after ingestion, according to a 2018 human study (https://cnw.fm/RELX8), while DehydraTECH-oral nicotine delivery peaked in bloodstream 10x to 20x faster than controls as seen in an animal study (https://cnw.fm/T0jUM).

DehydraTECH’s ability to increase the performance of different APIs represents multiple commercial opportunities that, when tapped, could potentially address serious unmet patient needs. Of the various markets the company is evaluating, hypertension is a good case in point.

Currently, only 1 in 5 adults with hypertension have it under control (https://cnw.fm/1tIsA), a worrying statistic attributable to the troublesome side effects of medication, which cause the patients to abandon their prescriptions (https://cnw.fm/jyX2O). Unfortunately, this means the overwhelming majority are at an increased risk of developing maladies such as heart, brain, and kidney disease or even death – hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide. But Lexaria is positioning DehydraTECH-CBD as a potential solution.

Through four human studies, the company has shown that DehydraTECH-CBD is well tolerated by all subjects, with no serious adverse events or side effects reported or observed. Moreover, the first three of these studies represented significant milestones in the pursuit of potential hypertension treatment. They have evidenced a rapid and sustained drop in blood pressure, a 23% average reduction in overnight blood pressure and reduced arterial stiffness, and attenuated pulmonary artery systolic pressure by approximately 5 mmHg, respectively (https://cnw.fm/usFiL). Lexaria expects to announce the results of its fourth human study, HYPER-H21-4, whose dosing was completed this summer, in due course (https://cnw.fm/el7NS).

HYPER-H21-4 is designed to enhance the company’s understanding of DehydraTECH-CBD for the treatment of heart disease and other disease states related to increased arterial stiffness. In addition, it is intended to improve Lexaria’s likelihood of success toward an Investigational New Drug (“IND”) application filing seeking the FDA’s approval to begin registered Phase 1b clinical testing. Having held a successful Pre-IND meeting, Lexaria is currently preparing to file the IND application by late 2022 or early 2023 (https://cnw.fm/hcYha).
