Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Receives Notice of Allowance of 26th Worldwide Patent

  • Lexaria, a global innovator in drug delivery technology, has developed the patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology which has been the subject of several issued patents
  • Recently, Lexaria reported it had been notified of the allowance of its 26th worldwide patent with a new patent to be granted in Japan
  • The patent is the fourth to be granted in Japan and the first patent issued from Lexaria’s seventh patent family
  • Lexaria also submitted a briefing book to the FDA to facilitate its upcoming pre-Investigational New Drug (“IND”) meeting with the agency

“We are extremely pleased to have received our first patent protecting our proprietary technology… I expect our intellectual property portfolio to continue to expand,” said Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) CEO Chris Bunka in an October 2016 press release announcing that the company had been issued U.S. Patent No. 9,474,725, Cannabinoid Infused Food and Beverage Compositions and Methods of Use Thereof, by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) (https://cnw.fm/AxzvE).

Since receiving this patent, its first ever, which pertains to LEXX’s method of enhancing bioavailability and taste of specific cannabinoid lipophilic active agents in food products, the company has amassed an impressive portfolio worldwide that includes patents granted in India, Australia, Japan, the U.S., Mexico, and Europe, and is, in fact, still growing as its patent applications advance to granted patents. Lexaria is pursuing patent protection in over 40 countries and currently has roughly 50 pending patent applications globally (https://cnw.fm/zCxCK).

In a development that now pushes the number of granted patents worldwide to 26, Lexaria recently reported it had been notified of the allowance of a new patent to be granted in Japan, the fourth to be granted in that country. Entitled Lipophilic Active Agent Infused Compositions with Reduced Food Effect, this is the first patent issued from Lexaria’s seventh patent family and refers to tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”) (https://cnw.fm/tGi2U).

The new patent acknowledges DehydraTECH(TM)’s ability to deliver active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) more efficiently, in a process known as absorption, regardless of the presence of food in the gastrointestinal system. Ordinarily, food impacts drug absorption by physically interacting with drugs, altering the pH, stimulating bile flow, slowing gastric emptying time, or increasing splanchnic blood flow (https://cnw.fm/jc21f). But DehydraTECH, Lexaria’s patented drug delivery technology, delivers drugs more consistently into the bloodstream regardless of this food effect. The drug delivery technology achieves this through its use of fatty acid oil.

Lexaria’s technology joins the API’s molecules in what is believed to be a “barbell-shaped” structure that allows the body to detect both molecules while enhancing taste and absorption. The body’s detection and natural processing of the long chain fatty acid is part of Lexaria’s clever patented process that also enhances the API absorption.

Bioavailability refers to both absorption levels and the time required to absorb. “In order to feel something quickly, you need to avoid something that’s known as fast-pass liver metabolism. When you eat food, it goes into your stomach, then it goes into your intestine, and then most of the nutrients go into your liver for filtration before they get into the bloodstream. That takes about an hour and a half, on average. But [using] our technology, we are able to divert the molecules away from the liver, and that allows you to get feelings or experiences in as little as 15 to 20 minutes,” Chris Bunka continued.

Meanwhile, Lexaria also reported it had submitted its briefing book to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). This documentation will facilitate a pre-Investigational New Drug (“IND”) meeting that LEXX had requested in an early June letter to the FDA. The FDA provided a target date of July 30, 2022, for a meeting or comments.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces Pending Start of Human Nicotine Study, NIC-H22-1, Leveraging Fast-Growing Global Nicotine Pouches Market

  • Lexaria Bioscience Corp. expects the upcoming human nicotine study to produce evidence that its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology can enhance oral-tissue absorption with reduced negative experiences
  • Data collected from animal study NIC-A21-1 showed that DehydraTECH enhanced oral nicotine pouches delivered peak nicotine levels in the bloodstream of animals 10x to 20x faster than the control
  • The global nicotine pouches market was valued at $2.33 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $21.84 billion by 2027, being one of the fastest growing segments in the nicotine industry
  • Lexaria’s pipeline addresses serious unmet patient or consumer needs with greater market potential, addressing multiple mainstream applications in cannabinoids, oral nicotine, antiviral therapies, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, and other APIs

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, recently announced the pending start of an upcoming human nicotine study, NIC-H22-1. The company expects to evidence that processing purified nicotine with its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology leads to enhanced oral-tissue absorption and reduced negative experiences. NIC-H22-1 is a minimum 36-person human pharmacokinetic randomized, double-blind, cross-over study comparing DehydraTECH-nicotine pouch performance to existing brands currently on the market, including ON! and Zyn (https://cnw.fm/Dy3BE).

The study’s primary objective is the objective data collection from blood samples that will evidence Tmax, Cmax, and AUC. Other study objectives include extensive subjective evaluations related to complaints of throat burn, user experience, and more. The nicotine test article ingredient manufacturing and DehydraTECH processing have been completed, and the materials have been received by the third-party pouch manufacturing company for filling and packaging. This study’s next two major steps will be Independent Review Board approval and subsequent human dosing.

Through a previous animal study NIC-A21-1, the company has already demonstrated that oral nicotine pouches using DehydraTECH technology were 10x to 20x faster at reaching peak delivery of nicotine to the bloodstream than the control.

Lexaria is leveraging the oral nicotine pouch market, which is one of the fastest growing segments in the nicotine industry due in part to the US Food and Drug Administration’s note of “reduced risk health outcomes” (https://cnw.fm/F6FDE). The delivery method, specifically the white pouch format, avoids harmful lung outcomes experienced by smokers and vapers, only involving absorption primarily through the mouth’s buccal tissues through purified nicotine. In 2020, the global nicotine pouches market was valued at $2.33 billion and is expected to reach $21.84 billion by the end of 2027, growing at a CAGR of 30.7% during the forecast period. (https://cnw.fm/gXDWN).

On March 8, 2022, Lexaria announced that it had been granted a new patent, “Compositions Infused with Nicotine Compounds and Methods of Use Thereof.” The Australian patent expands Lexaria’s international intellectual property rights to apply DehydraTECH enhancement technology to most oral forms of nicotine, including pills, lozenges, capsules, pouches, gums, and sprays. Lexaria currently has 25 patents granted worldwide plus a 26th patent allowed in Japan.

As detailed in Lexaria’s July 2022 Corporate Presentation, DehydraTECH is faster and more effective at delivering drugs into the bloodstream and brain tissues by increasing bioavailability, improving the speed of onset, reducing drug administrative costs, and masking the unwanted taste (https://cnw.fm/k9d6H).

The technology’s pipeline addresses serious unmet patient needs with greater market potential, addressing multiple mainstream applications in cannabinoids, oral nicotine, antiviral therapies, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, and other APIs. The current pipeline includes five studies currently in various stages, including animal PK/PD proof of concept for CBD for epilepsy and PDE5 inhibitors, human PK/PD proof of concept for oral nicotine (NIC-H22-1), and one study currently in the Investigational New Drug (“IND”) enabling study status, DehydraTECH-CBD for hypertension.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Offers Best-In Class Solution To Major Issue Affecting A Range Of Critical Drug Applications

  • Researchers have run into the issue of solubility of molecules intended for absorption, ultimately affecting drug effectiveness and inhibiting patient recovery
  • This has forced the exploration of new drug delivery technologies, with Lexaria’s patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology proving to be the most innovative, useful, and effective
  • DehydraTECH(TM) technology has seen application in oral nicotine for reduced risk, antiviral drugs for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, PDE5 inhibitors, and CBD for hypertension
  • The recent expansion of the Cannadips Brand into Europe, Japan, and South Africa highlights the proliferation of DehydraTECH and a significant growth in its market share, particularly in the CBD space
  • Lexaria is excited about the expansion and anticipates additional growth in its technology’s adoption as time progresses

For a long time, the medical industry has sought ways to improve patient health by enhancing the delivery of therapeutic drugs to target sites. An especially critical problem researchers in this sector have encountered is the limited solubility of the molecules intended for absorption.

It is estimated that approximately 90% of preclinical drug candidates are low-solubility compounds. This presents a challenge regarding the compounds’ bioavailability and effectiveness of the drugs. The problem has led researchers to explore various drug delivery technologies, some of which have shown promise while others have failed (https://cnw.fm/1IiSL).

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) has come forth with what they are confident is the best solution, their patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology. It has been regarded as one of the most innovative drug delivery technologies in years, proving useful in delivering a wide range of active pharmaceutical ingredients in a more palatable and effective way. In addition, studies repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bio-absorption with cannabinoids and nicotine by 5-10x and, in some instances with cannabinoids by as much as 27x compared to standard industry formulations, a benefit that opens significant possibilities for important drug delivery.

DehydraTECH application areas tested so far include CBD for hypertension, oral nicotine for reduced risk, antiviral drugs for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases and PDE5 inhibitors. A new sector showing promise is the CBD industry, valued at $4.1 billion in 2022 and projected to hit $111.8 billion by 2030 (https://cnw.fm/6pXty).

DehydraTECH’s application in the cannabis sector is seeing a boom, particularly with the recent expansion of Boldt Runners Corporation, a DehydraTECH licensee, into Europe, Japan, and South Africa (https://cnw.fm/S0Y49).

Boldt Runners Corporation owns the Cannadips Brand, whose Cannadips CBD dip pouch is the leading CBD pouch brand in the United States. As a tobacco-free, nicotine-free dip alternative, this product offers an effective way to get the benefits of CBD by leveraging Lexaria’s DehydraTECH delivery technology. The product is sold in over 6,500 stores across the United States, and its expansion beyond the country is a major step, not just for Boldt Runners but also for Lexaria.

As Lexaria’s list of licensees continues to grow, more consumers will benefit from the DehydraTECH technology. The company is confident that, as the adoption of this technology grows, it will not only help its partners offer clients superior performance and experiences, but also ramp up shareholder value.

“Lexaria’s technology is enabling increased market share and sales growth for our continually growing list of corporate clients,” noted Chris Bunka, Lexaria’s Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”).

“We are delighted to help these innovators of today and leaders of tomorrow offer their clients superior performance and experiences that competitors simply cannot match, and we are highly anticipatory of additional growth to come,” he added.

Lexaria Bioscience Corp.’s (NASDAQ: LEXX) DehydraTECH(TM) Technology Enhances Bioavailability of Orally Administered APIs

  • Lexaria is a global innovator in drug delivery platforms
  • The company has developed the patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology that significantly improves the bioavailability of orally administered pharmaceuticals and therapeutics
  • Bioavailability is the fraction of a drug that reaches the site of action or systemic circulation
  • While drugs delivered intravenously are 100% bioavailable, drugs that have any other route of administration, such as oral, have reduced bioavailability
  • DehydraTECH enhances the bioavailability of APIs, in part, by bypassing first-pass liver processing

Global innovator Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) has built a reputation as a developer of drug delivery platforms, the most notable of which is the patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology. DehydraTECH is a formulation and dehydration processing method that modifies how the body detects and absorbs drugs, solving a glaring problem that has long affected orally administered drugs: low bioavailability.

Bioavailability indicates the fraction or rate of the initial dose of a drug that is successfully made available to the site of action or systemic circulation (blood supply to all body tissues) from where target organs can readily access. “Intravenous dosing is considered 100% bioavailable since the drug is administered directly to the bloodstream, also termed the central compartment or systemic circulation. However, if a drug has some different route of administration, oral being most commonly employed, its bioavailability may be limited,” explains an article by the North East Biolab (https://cnw.fm/lPwPp). “For oral doses, bioavailability limitations are typically due to the first-pass metabolism produced by the liver as well as incomplete absorption in the gut.”

DehydraTECH solves the low bioavailability problem through a sophisticated API-delivery mechanism. According to Lexaria, DehydraTECH “works symbiotically with existing physiology systems to enable improved and more rapid absorption into the bloodstream and brain tissues.”

The technology, which combines fat-soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) with long-chain fatty acids, ensures the orally administered DehydraTECH-enabled API enters the upper intestine only minutes after administration. Next, the API is “delivered into the lymphatic lacteals primarily and transported across the upper intestinal wall – instead of going into the hepatic vein destined for the liver.” This way, the APIs bypass first-pass liver processing.

In addition to increasing bioavailability, DehydraTECH offers additional benefits. Lexaria’s subjective and objective testing and pharmacokinetic studies conducted since 2015, for instance, show that DehydraTECH delivers higher quantities of APIs in less time – it is faster and more effective at delivering drugs into the bloodstream and brain tissue. More specifically, the technology increases bioavailability, improves the speed of onset, enhances brain absorption, and increases the ratio of drug delivery, which is expected to reduce drug administration costs by lowering the dosing. Furthermore, DehydraTECH masks unwanted taste, effectively dealing with the bitter, unpleasant taste of medicine and APIs that makes them aversive to children and even adults (https://cnw.fm/Dkkd6).

DehydraTECH, which is applied to various ingestible product formats, including mouth melts, oral suspensions, capsules, tablets, and others, has multiple opportunities for success in different APIs. To that end, Lexaria is actively developing lead product pipeline candidates in the areas of antiviral drugs, cannabidiol (“CBD”) for hypertension, and oral nicotine.

The company also partners with third-party companies looking to explore formulation opportunities with their specific APIs of interest. Anchored in exclusive or non-exclusive licensing agreements, these partnerships boost Lexaria’s commercial prospects, given it grants the out-licenses in exchange for up-front fees, milestone payments, and/or royalty payments. But as CEO Chris Bunka emphasized in a January 2022 letter to shareholders (https://cnw.fm/JdaMv), these current revenue streams, while important, are not the company’s main area of business focus. Rather, Lexaria is focused on “larger national and international applications for DehydraTECH, primarily but not entirely in the pharmaceutical sector.”

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Expands Production Capabilities to Support Growing List of Business-to-Business Clientele

  • Lexaria is a global innovator in drug delivery platforms; its patented DehydraTECH(TM) technology improves the bioavailability, speed of onset, and brain absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients (“API”)
  • Testing confirms that DehydraTECH-processed cannabidiol beverages maintained 93.4% and 78% potency of CBD a full year and two years after production, respectively
  • Lexaria recently signed two agreements with BevNology LLC, an Atlanta-based company with advanced capabilities that support best-in-class beverage formulations
  • The partnership, which also leverages Lexaria’s superior DehydraTECH-CBD nanoemulsification formulation and processing techniques, could make industry-leading beverage products a reality for many brands

In this year’s letter to shareholders, Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX) Chair and CEO Chris Bunka acclaimed the company’s research and development achievements which had resulted in remarkable stability of DehydraTECH(TM)-processed cannabidiol (“CBD”) beverages. One year after production, Bunka wrote, “bottled consumer beverage contained a remarkable 93.4% potency of CBD. We also showed less than 1% variability of CBD potency within the beverage, a concept of critical importance when delivering drugs in an aqueous solution” (https://cnw.fm/H4ndc).

The latest data from stability testing undertaken 25 months after initial bottling show the product had higher variability but still retained an average 78% of originally formulated CBD. Additionally, the microbiologic purity and cleanliness of the product surpassed all requirements 25 months after bottling.

One problem that has long caused the instability and variability of cannabis drinks, which normally include cannabinoids such as CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”), is the hydrophobic nature of the cannabinoids. When THC or CBD are extracted from the cannabis or plant, they take an oil-based form. And as a Prepared Foods article notes, this hydrophobic nature complicates their use, particularly in water-based products. Studies have, in fact, shown that the insolubility of CBD, for instance, results in bioavailability as low as 4%. But companies can get around this problem using adequate manufacturing techniques that employ encapsulation and emulsification (https://cnw.fm/cYlw8).

“First and foremost, encapsulation allows for even dispersion throughout the product, meaning consumers will get the same amount of an active ingredient, such as CBD or THC, in each bite or sip,” reads the Prepared Foods article. “Encapsulation also improves a product’s shelf life, preventing the cannabinoid content from degrading over time and keeping the formulation stable.”

On the other hand, emulsification, which involves using a binding agent known as an emulsifier, aims to improve the absorption and onset times. There are three types of oil-in-water emulsions, macro, micro, and nano, with nanoemulsions featuring prominently in the cannabis food and beverage industry.

Lexaria understands the impact of adequate manufacturing techniques on the potency of its DehydraTECH-processed CBD products. And in a recent move that expands its manufacturing prowess even further, the company recently signed two agreements with BevNology LLC, a leading Atlanta-based beverage development and advisory company focused on providing quality formulation and commercialization services of cutting-edge beverage products (https://cnw.fm/Go4Bc).

One of these agreements, a manufacturing operating agreement, expands production capabilities for Lexaria’s own growing list of business-to-business (“B2B”) clients looking to purchase DehydraTECH-powered active ingredients for consumer-packaged-goods brands. BevNology custom-built a new, state-of-the-art processing facility that expands production capacity substantially. Already, the facility is operational and serving Lexaria’s clients. On its part, Lexaria installed all required commercial DehydraTECH manufacturing equipment into the facility in anticipation of future growth.

Meanwhile, the second agreement, a commercial license agreement, authorizes BevNology to offer DehydraTECH products with hemp-derived active ingredients, including CBD, under BevNology and partnered brands. This agreement leverages BevNology’s advanced capabilities that support best-in-class beverage formulations coupled with Lexaria’s superior DehydraTECH-CBD nanoemulsification formulation and processing techniques, could make industry-leading beverage products a reality for many brands.

“These agreements build on a long-standing and very successful product development consulting relationship between Lexaria and the expert scientists and personnel at BevNology,” commented Chris Bunka. “BevNology’s formulation and production capabilities are class leading, and we are confident that our new relationship with our trusted partner will propel new and exciting growth opportunities for both companies.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Leveraging DehydraTECH(TM) to Stand Distinct, Push Brand

Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) acknowledges consumers’ shift away from smoking cigarettes to nicotine alternatives, which has resulted in the growth of the nicotine pouch and nicotine replacement therapy (“NRT”) markets. Through its patented DehydraTECH technology, Lexaria looks to tap into the multibillion-dollar nicotine alternatives industry and stamp its position. “In a move that sought to prove DehydraTECH’s superiority, Lexaria conducted an oral nicotine absorption study in 2021. The research showed that Lexaria’s DehydraTECH-nicotine delivered via an oral pouch product dispensed enough nicotine levels in blood plasma in four minutes, as concentration-matched controls did in 45 minutes. In addition, peak levels of DehydraTECH-nicotine proved to be approximately ten times higher than the peak level of the controls,” a recent article reads. “With key industry players such as Altria Group, British American Tobacco Industries, Philip Morris International, and GlaxoSmithKline PLC embracing a transition to a smoke-free future, Lexaria isn’t being left behind. Instead, it recognizes the existing opportunity and is capitalizing on its DehydraTECH technology to set itself apart from its peers and aggressively push its brand in the market.”
