420 with CNW – Why the Thai Military Regards Medical Marijuana as Top Priority

The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand launched the first full-time medical marijuana clinic in Bangkok earlier this month. The launch was led by the conservative, military-dominated government, whose main aim is to make Thailand the regional producer and distributor of medical marijuana.

Marijuana extracts are approved for treating a wide range of diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’s, anxiety, cancer, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.

More clinics will be opened in greater Bangkok as promised by the government, and through a specialized smartphone app, patients would be able to book appointments.

Dr. Ganja, a mascot, is campaigning for the government to promote medical marijuana. Dr. Ganja is an approachable and level –headed scientist. Another supporter of legal marijuana is the Thailand Prime Minister who is also a former military general, Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Discussed below is where the push for developing the legal marijuana industry in Thailand started and whether it could be the gateway for further drug use liberalization in South East Asia.

When the Push Towards Medical Marijuana Started in Thailand

Marijuana was outlawed in Thailand in 1935, and before that ban, it had always been a part of traditional medicine and a cooking ingredient. It had also been used as a form of pain relief.

The legalization of medical marijuana in Thailand took place in December 2018, making Thailand the first country in South East Asia to legalize marijuana. It was legalized through an amendment of the 1979 Narcotic Act, thereby approving the use of marijuana for medicinal and research purposes.

The Ministry of Health in Thailand has a website containing information about marijuana cultivation, medical research, and the status of marijuana in Thailand, and the public can browse through the website to educate themselves.

The cultivation of medical marijuana can now be done by government agencies, institutions of higher education, agricultural producers, entrepreneurs, and medical professionals.

The first medical marijuana research institution was launched in 2019 by Rangit University in Bangkok. Harsh penalties are still being imposed on those found possessing and trafficking marijuana.

Why Thailand Decided to Promote Medical Marijuana

The military-dominated government recognized the vast business opportunity and tax revenue to ensue from the legalization of medical marijuana, and this could have been a strong motivator for legalizing the industry.

Besides, having watched how the marijuana market in North America has grown, increased revenues, and created thousands of jobs, the Thai government had to venture into the medical marijuana industry.

Prohibition Partners is a marijuana market research firm, and it estimated that by 2024, the Asian medical marijuana market could be worth $8.4 billion. The managing director of Prohibition Partners, Daragh Anglim, said that a well regulated medical marijuana market across Asia could help transform patients’ health, farmers, and the economy. The firm further estimated that Thailand’s legal marijuana market could be worth about $958 million by 2024.

Being one of the largest medical tourism destinations across the globe, Thailand officials would like to provide medical tour packages such as detox, massages and other wellness services using medical marijuana products, said the tourism minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakan.

Could it Be the Gateway to the Broader Legalization of Marijuana?

A recent poll shows that 80% of Thai citizens are in favor of full legalization of marijuana, reported the Bangkok Post. This indicates that Thailand could be on the path of legalizing adult-use marijuana, but the military is still opposed to adult-use recreational marijuana.

Nevertheless, the steps that they have taken to avail medical marijuana to the patients who need it the most may have won applause from industry players like Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) and Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) who would like patients from all parts of the world to have the option of using medical marijuana to manage their conditions.

420 with CNW – 5 Mistakes Commercial Cannabis Producers Should Avoid

Marijuana is a profitable crop that is highly regulated, and growers must avoid the mistakes discussed below when establishing their commercial operations. This will enable them to produce high-quality yields and still adhere to the evolving regulations.

  1. Installing a growing system using equipment from various suppliers.

Setting up your commercial marijuana facility will be difficult if you are ordering the equipment, such as benching, irrigation systems, and lighting from different suppliers. As a grower, you should make sure that your benches are well coordinated with your irrigation system. Similarly, the cooling system should be designed in a way that takes into consideration the lighting details. Commercial farmers should take advantage of the automated growing equipment available on the market because when it is appropriately designed as an integrated system, it provides better traceability and uniform quality of the crop. It also increases crop yields.

  1. Fitting your commercial marijuana facility with systems meant for small scale operations.

The facility and systems needed for small scale farming are different from those required in the industrial production of marijuana. And to ensure that commercial growers maintain consistent quality control in their facilities, they not only have to invest in systems and equipment capable of handling large operations but also ones that are capable of adapting to expansion plans in the near future. Growers should also work with experts who are experienced in designing top-notch marijuana facilities. The experts can also provide consultation services to the growers to ensure long-term growth.

  1. Failing to develop reliable connections with your suppliers.

Before growing marijuana in your commercial facility, you should make sure that the facility is built to code by people who have the expertise and experience in building marijuana facilities. Before choosing the supplier, perform due diligence. Ask for references, and also visit their manufacturing factory and offices to ensure that their products and services are up to par. Their product must be of quality because it is a significant factor in the marijuana sector. Do not take shortcuts because it will only delay your license approval or cultivation of cannabis; therefore, ensure that your supplier will not fail you in any situation.

  1. Failing to automate the growing process.

In order to adhere to the regulations stipulated by health departments and maintain a competitive edge, growers should be consistent in their quality control and compliance in their day to day operations. Their facility should be fitted with integrated growing systems, light levels, timed irrigation systems, specific fertilizing mix, air filtration, cooling, and heating system that can be adjusted automatically depending on the plant’s needs. This makes it easy to monitor and record the details on the environmental computer; thus, any unnecessary changes can be easily identified and corrected.

  1. Postponing urgent orders until the last minute.

Some suppliers say that sometimes, they receive calls from growers who need benches and irrigation systems manufactured and fitted in their commercial facilities because they are being inspected in a few days. Although they have been in a position to meet the urgent orders, it is not advisable to rely on this method. The costs of setting up commercial marijuana facilities are substantial but entirely necessary for passing the inspection; therefore, growers should plan and get set up ahead of the scheduled inspection.

Industry watchers believe that experienced marijuana entities like Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) and Canopy Rivers Inc. (TSX: RIV) (OTC: CNPOF) know all too well the importance of avoiding the mistakes highlighted in the discussion above.

420 with CNW – What is the Shelf Life of Cannabis Edibles?

Marijuana edibles give the consumers a good buzz minus the risks associated with smoking or vaping the products, regardless of whether you bought them at a dispensary or made them in your kitchen. Most of these products have an expiry date printed on the packaging or an attached sticker. This means that it is unhealthy and unsafe to consume these products past their expiry date. It is, however, uncertain if the expired products can still get you high.

A number of top-rated manufacturers of marijuana-infused foods have provided some information on the shelf life of homemade and packed edibles so that consumers can get some needed answers about the potency and safety of expired cannabis edibles.

A certified chef de cuisine and master chocolatier, Scott Van Rixel, says that the most critical factor of infused marijuana products apart from the expiration date is the edibles’ shelf life. Rixel is also the founder of Bhang Corporation, which manufactures marijuana edibles.

Rixel further said that the shelf life of an edible is attributed to the fact that it is a food product rather than the fact that it is infused with marijuana. All consumable food products, including those that aren’t infused with marijuana, are made of perishable ingredients that go bad with time and depending on the environmental conditions. Therefore, you may find marijuana-infused products getting stale or going rancid, just like any other non-infused food products.

The CEO of Wana Brands, Nancy Whiteman, said that product packaging and the method used in adding THC to the products could also impact the edibles’ shelf life.

Marijuana experts say that the THC in the infused product would not be destroyed; however, the methods used to mix THC, and the food products, determine its potency.

Research carried out by Wana Brands found that their company’s edible products do not lose their potency over time, said Whiteman. She further explained that they conducted research on their edibles at intervals of six months, nine months, and one year and found that the change in potency is not significant.

However, the process of manufacturing edibles can lead to loss of potency in some products over time, said Ron Silver. Silver is the founder and Chief creative officer at Azuca, a marijuana edibles company. Silver further explained that the thick nature of marijuana oil contributes to the shelf instability of marijuana edibles.

Marijuana oil that is not emulsified correctly separates from the food products, and it is left behind on the surface of the packaging, meaning that you do not ingest all the THC in your edible. Azuca has developed a process that makes cannabinoid molecules water soluble, making it easy for them to be absorbed. This helps to stabilize the edibles.

Although the expired products are still potent, the choice on whether to go ahead and consume that potent  and expired edible depends on the food that was infused and the extent of possible harm the expired food ingredients can inflict. Furthermore, the experience of consuming an expired marijuana edible will not be as pleasurable as with a non-expired edible.

Silver further said that more research is needed to determine and understand the stability of marijuana cannabinoids with certain foods, and their interaction with the body’s metabolism. It would also be essential to find out how sick expired marijuana edibles can make a person.

Proper storage of marijuana edibles prolongs their freshness, and perishable foods such as eggs and dairy should be refrigerated. The temperature in the packaging of gummies should be controlled and they should be kept away from light.

Each marijuana product, especially edibles, is different and that is probably the reason why marijuana sector players like Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) and HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) emphasize that customers adhere to the usage and storage instructions provided by the manufacturer.

420 with CNW – MLB Action Prompts Stakeholders to Expect a Marijuana Policy Shift in the NFL

Toward the end of last week, a top National Football League (NFL) team owner, Jerry Jones, and the New England Patriots quarterback player, Tom Brady, said that the league’s marijuana rules are bound to change after the MLB announced that it is eliminating marijuana from the list of banned substances for baseball players.

In an on-air interview with a Dallas radio station on Friday, Jones said that any issue regarding marijuana is a sensitive topic across the globe. He also noted that the leagues are excited about the possibility of being at par with the social and legal scene on marijuana.

Jones observed that they are not only looking at the issue of competitiveness when it comes to substance usage but also the law, as well as the societal focus on marijuana. It is also an important issue to discuss with the players.

In an on-air interview with Westwood One Sports on Thursday, Brady said that the MLB move to remove marijuana is a sign that times are changing, and progress is good.

Brady further said that there has been rumors that the NFL is going to follow in the MLB’s footsteps. He noted that the stigma against marijuana is being eradicated. Brady also added that he is hoping that before a decision is made, they will research the benefits that will ensue from the move.

Currently, the NFL teams and players associations are negotiating on a collective bargaining agreement; this will give the owners a chance to change the rules on drug testing and punishment.

Brady said that he does not know much about the issue, but he is sure there are experts present to provide them with advice.

Jones has always been against the NFL’s strict stance on marijuana. A recent survey on cannabis showed that 67% of Americans are in favor of marijuana legalization. Punishing players for consuming cannabis could be more harmful to the NFL public image than do any good.

In the annual drugs test, if an NFL player’s results are positive, several fines are imposed, suspension and rehabilitation, whereas a contracted player can be tested at a minimum notice of 3 hours. In 2018, the NFL collected $4,000,000 in fines due to positive drug tests.

Speaking to Los Angeles Times, the former Chargers offensive lineman Kyle Turley said that players are known to side-step the process, passing annual marijuana tests, and then smoking weed the rest of the year. Baseball is a brutal game, and marijuana could help other players as it saved his life.

Speaking to The Washington Post in October, sources close to league owners said that the owners are willing to amend marijuana policies by making them less punitive, and this would limit NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s disciplinary powers over cannabis. The league and union are willing to study how pot can be used to manage pain.

Currently, the NFL team owners and NFL players’ unions are negotiating, and neither of the parties can comment on their progress. Past agreement negotiations lasted for a period of 57 days.

According to experts, this possible policy shift is likely to be good news for cannabis industry players like Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) and Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) who have always wanted all categories of people to enjoy the benefits of marijuana, especially for medicinal purposes.

420 with CNW – Michael Bloomberg Now Supports Marijuana Decriminalization

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a Democratic presidential candidate who has been outspoken against marijuana law reforms but is now in favor of decriminalizing marijuana possession.

On November 24, Bloomberg launched a late bid for the Democratic presidential nomination; however, he faced criticism for making dismissive remarks earlier in the year about cannabis legalization when he said that the policy change is the stupidest thing anybody has ever done.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Bloomberg is in support of criminal justice reform for the decriminalization of simple marijuana possession and states’ right to end prohibition without intervention from the federal authorities. This shows that he is trying to distance himself from the anti-marijuana image he previously had.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg said that no one’s life should be ruined through incarceration for marijuana possession. He also noted that his reform efforts reduced imprisonment by 40% and that he worked hard to get New York laws changed to stop simple possession arrests. Bloomberg further said that he believes in decriminalization and that the states which have legalized marijuana should not be subjected to federal interference.

In 2011, Bloomberg vetoed a New York bill whose purpose was to treat simple marijuana possession with a court summons and fine instead of incarceration; however, two years later, he supported the legislation seeking to reduce criminal punishments for low-level cannabis possession. Bloomberg also called for alterations in the way law enforcement handle such cases.

The majority of the Democratic presidential candidates would be several steps ahead of Bloomberg even after he incorporates the proposal for decriminalizing marijuana possession in his policies because almost all Democratic candidates are in favor of comprehensive marijuana legalization and removal of cannabis from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act. This change would ensure that the legal marijuana industry is socially equitable.

Former Vice President, Joe Biden, is another presidential candidate who is against marijuana legalization. However, he has voiced his support for decriminalization, medical cannabis legalization, and modest federal rescheduling. But, he has vetoed legalization of adult-use marijuana.

Both Biden and Bloomberg made some negative remarks on marijuana reforms that received criticism. Earlier this year, Biden said that he does not support broad marijuana reforms as it could act as a gateway to harmful drugs. Bloomberg also noted that legalization is perhaps the stupidest thing ever done and that it doe not make any sense.

Although both candidates are now in support of decriminalization, other candidates such as Pete Buttigieg and Tulsi Gabbard are supporting the decriminalization of all drugs, while Julian Castro is considering broad marijuana reform.

Analysts believe marijuana companies like Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) and Hemptown USA are following these policy discussions closely because the coming elections could decide how marijuana policy reform plays out.

According to the terms and conditions of the job advert, the $3,000 salary is dependent on the experience and capability of the applicant.

Marijuana is becoming more mainstream with each passing year, so it isn’t surprising that such job offers are beginning to popup. Cannabis industry analysts expect sector players like Willow Biosciences Corp. (CSE: WLLW) and Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) to come up with novel jobs that pay handsomely.

420 with CNW – Recreational Marijuana Could Be Available in Michigan Sooner Than Expected

Potential marijuana businesses in Michigan are eagerly waiting for recreational licenses to be processed. This will allow them to start cultivating, processing, and selling legal pot to the residents. Depending on the time the businesses are licensed, the current rules, and the duration of the growth cycle, it is estimated that recreational marijuana is likely to be available on the market in March or April.

The state’s recreational marijuana law is blind to any other existing marijuana products, so the recreational marijuana market must begin from zero unless the Marijuana Regulatory Agency Director, Andrew Brisbo, allows retailers to open their outlets earlier by permitting medical marijuana products to cross to the recreational market.

Last week Brisbo said that the agency should continue monitoring medical cannabis supply to see whether it can be available for recreational purposes as well. Previously, he had said that he would not reduce the supply of medical marijuana for patients to please the recreational market.

On November 1, Brisbo said there is an inadequate supply of medical marijuana in the regulated market to meet the demands of the patients. He also noted that consumer demand for MMJ is not at capacity and that the inadequate supply is contributed to by marijuana flower shortages.

Brisbo also explained that the imbalance between supply and demand is because the number of licensed dispensaries and the number of growers do not match.

A recent report released by the Marijuana Regulatory Agency (MRA) shows that by the second quarter of 2019, the number of licensed dispensaries was 120. And, the number of licensed growers supplying them with weed was 89, of which 78 of them were permitted to grow 1500 plants each, two 1000 plants, and nine could only plant 100 plants.

Brisbo is hopeful that the sales will increase as more growers are issued with licenses. Some are expected to be licensed by the end of this month and more before December 30.

Although no business has yet been awarded a recreational sales license, companies such as Exclusive Brands are ready to sell to other consumers other than registered MMJ patients.

Last week, the Exclusive Brands co-owner, Omar Hitesh, said that they were hoping that the rules and regulations for recreational marijuana would be ready by January 1 when they expected the market to be operational. But, the rumor is, it will be launched later in 2019.

Hitesh said that recreational customers have already entered their Ann Harbor dispensary, hoping to score some legal weed only to be turned away when they could not present their MMJ card. He further said that the dispensary has launched a waiting list for recreational customers to notify them when it becomes legal.

It is clear to analysts that demand is high for recreational weed in Michigan, and sector players like Hemptown USA and Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) hope that the companies licensed to meet this demand will not let down the residents.
