420 with CNW – Top Arguments for Legalizing Marijuana Sales and Consumption

For the past couple of years, attitudes towards cannabis have been on the mend. Although the controversial plant is still considered illegal at the federal level, over 30 states have legalized it to varying degrees. Renowned for a long time due to its psychoactive abilities, cannabis is increasingly being considered medicinal, with plenty of people using it to help manage conditions like chronic pain in lieu of pharmaceuticals.

We are still a long way from federal decriminalization, though. Cannabis reform activists have been working hard to convince the masses of the benefits of legalizing cannabis. The following are some of the arguments activists have used in favor of cannabis legalization and regulation;

Cannabis is a medicine. Although the hype around cannabis’ medicinal properties has outpaced the science, the plant has still been proven to be an effective treatment in some cases. Research has found that cannabis can help reduce nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy as well as intractable seizures caused by pediatric epilepsy. Additionally, cannabis is effective against chronic, pain, stress, anxiety, and a host of other medical conditions.

Cannabis arrests are a waste of resources. The police make more than 660,000 cannabis arrests each year, more than for any other drug. These arrests are mostly for possession, inflicting tens of billions of dollars in economic damage annually, with police dedicating $3.6bn annually to enforce possession laws. If you’re arrested for marijuana possession, it can cost you anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 to defend yourself in court, not to mention the fines you may have to pay if you lose. All this resource hemorrhage is avoidable.

Most people arrested for cannabis possession are harmless. Most people who use cannabis recreationally and even medically don’t fit into the stereotypical ‘criminal’ role. At best, they just want to smoke (or eat) their marijuana, maybe watch a movie, relax, and go to sleep. However, 92% of marijuana arrests are for possession, branding decent, law-abiding citizens as criminals. And once a drug arrest or even incarceration is on your permanent record, you’ll have a lot of trouble finding adequate employment or even good housing in the future.

Legalization will boost the economy, especially in the coming years as the country struggles to recover from the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The state-legal cannabis industry is already worth $10.73 billion and has created over 200,000 jobs in the U.S. Additionally, states that have legalized cannabis have consistently brought in millions of dollars in cannabis tax. California, for instance, collected a whopping $305 million in cannabis excise tax revenue alone and $635 million total in state and local revenue in its second year of legal sales.

As we head into the next year, legalizing cannabis can help boost the economy by filling state coffers with cannabis tax and providing gainful employment to people who need it. Entities like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) know all too well the economic potential of marijuana, and that is probably why the industry is so vocal in urging the authorities to create regulated markets for these products.

420 with CNW – Tilray, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY) Announces Positive Research Results for Cancer Sufferers

Medical cannabis is probably one of the most controversial topics at the moment. Critics of the medical marijuana movement have claimed that there is hardly any evidence of therapeutic benefit and that the hype has far outpaced the science. On the other hand, cannabis reform activists have argued that due to its diverse medicinal properties, medical cannabis can be a great alternative to pharmaceuticals.

Quite recently, Tilray (NASDAQ: TLRY) announced that Australian researchers have found that medical cannabis has shown promise as a treatment for nausea and vomiting for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in a clinical trial. The trial’s preliminary findings, which showed a significant improvement in the control of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, were published in the Annals of Oncology. The pilot phase of the study consisted of 81 patients who had experienced nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy and it ran for two and a half years.

A quarter of the participants taking medical cannabis experienced no vomiting or nausea compared to 14 percent of people who took a placebo. “The side-effects associated with chemotherapy are some of the primary causes of treatment discontinuation,” says Philippe Lucas, Vice President of Global Research and Access at Tilray, “so improving the control of nausea and vomiting can not only improve the quality of life of patients, but by allowing those affected by cancer to complete their treatment it can also potentially save lives.”

At the moment, the most prescribed medicine for chemo-induced nausea is the synthetic drug Marinol, owned by biotech company AbbVie. However, plenty of patients have been unable to continue with it due to side effects such as mood changes, confusion, trouble concentrating, dizziness, and anxiety. “Nausea and vomiting are among the most distressing and feared consequences of chemotherapy,” says Peter Grimson, leader of the study, medical oncologist at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Associate Professor at the University of Sidney.

Although side effects such as sedation, drowsiness, and dizziness were present in moderate to severe levels in about one-third of the people using medical cannabis, researchers considered them manageable. “These encouraging results indicate medical cannabis can help improve quality of life for chemotherapy patients,” Grimson says.

“The trial will now move to a larger phase to determine with much more certainty how effective medicinal cannabis is and whether it should be considered for use in routine cancer care. The next phase of the trial is ongoing and will recruit an extra 170 people.” Grimson added.

Experts say this research goes a long way towards confirming what pot companies like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) have always said about the myriad of benefits of marijuana.

420 with CNW – Colorado Governor Signs Executive Order Pardoning Thousands of Marijuana Convictions

Back in June, the governor of Colorado signed into law a marijuana bill that would promote social equity in Colorado’s marijuana market. On top of that, the bill would give Gov. Jared Polis the power to unilaterally issue pardons for prior marijuana convictions. Decades after the War on Drugs began, it is crystal clear that it has led to the over-policing of certain communities, and the bill was designed to fix some of these wrongs.

On Thursday, one day after the new law took effect, the governor signed an executive order granting nearly 3,000 pardons for people convicted of the possession one ounce or less of marijuana. Although the bill gives Gov. Polis the authority to grant clemency for cases of possession of up to two ounces, he limited it to one ounce because that’s the legal possession limit under Colorado’s cannabis program, his office said.

“We are finally cleaning up some of the inequities of the past by pardoning 2,732 convictions for Coloradans who simply had an ounce of marijuana or less. It’s ridiculous how being written up for smoking a joint in the 1970s has followed some Coloradans throughout their lives and gotten in the way of their success,” Polis said in a press release. Marijuana convictions that were voided by the governor’s action took place from 1978 all the way through 2012.

“Too many Coloradans have been followed their entire lives by a conviction for something that is no longer a crime, and these convictions have impacted their job status, housing, and countless other areas of their lives. Today we are taking this step toward creating a more just system and breaking down barriers to help transform people’s lives as well as coming to terms with one aspect of the past, failed policy of marijuana prohibition,” he added.

The new law states that “for the individuals pardoned in this Executive Order, all rights of citizenship associated with the pardoned conviction are restored in full without condition” and that “all civil disabilities and public sufferings associated with the pardoned conviction are removed.” Additionally, the process is automated and as a result, individuals who are eligible for the pardons don’t have to do anything to clear their own records. All they have to do is check a website to see if their pardon has been processed.

Governor Polis’ action also calls on the state Department of Health to “develop a process to indicate on criminal background checks which individuals’ convictions have been pardoned pursuant to this Executive Order.”

This corrective step taken by Colorado is likely to come as good news to the entire marijuana industry, including players like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) who have always believed that the criminalization of cannabis consumption is wrong.

420 with CNW – Environmental Protection Groups Endorse Montana Cannabis Legalization Initiative

At the November ballot, Montanans will be voting on two separate marijuana measures; a statutory change that would create a system of legal cannabis access for adult-use as well as a separate constitutional amendment that would limit the market to those aged 21 and over. If they vote in favor of the statutory measure, possession of up to an ounce of cannabis would be legal. Additionally, residents would also be allowed to cultivate four plants and four seedlings at home. Submitted by New Approach Montana, both of the initiatives have been met with plenty of support, including from a coalition of environmental conservation groups.

If recreational sales become legal, the state will tax sales at 20% with a significant portion of those taxes dedicated to environmental conservation programs. This would ensure Montana’s famous public lands and parks are well cared for, something a new Public Lands Coalition (“PLC”) comprised of four conservation organizations, including the Montana Conservation Voters and Montana Wildlife Federation, is very happy about. “All Montanans share the values of open space, and as Montanans, we collectively own and steward some of the most special places on earth. We are in fact, the Last Best Place, and that’s a central part of our identity as Montanans,” says Pepper Petersen, political director for New Approach Montana.

“The allocations in I-90 reflect our values as Montanans and you see that in the initiative. Montanans know that marijuana revenue should be invested wisely, and our public lands in Montana are a great investment,” he says. In an op-ed published in the Missoulian newspaper, the coalition said that there is currently $60 million in “unmet conservation needs in Montana” for services such as “funding for landowners who want to offer access for hunting and fishing,” and tax revenue from cannabis sales would more than cover that.

“In order to continue to offer Montanans and our millions of guests an experience worth coming back for, we need to invest in our public lands. A vote for 118 and 190 is a vote to maintain and create trails, protect land for wildlife and fund our state parks,” the PLC, which includes Wild Montana Action Fund as well as the trust for Public Land writes. According to the coalition’s website, legalization would “provide more than $18 million per year to benefit our public lands; both maintaining current access and opening up new opportunities.”

“These additional funds would help to address the state’s backing of repairs to campgrounds, trails, wildlife habitat, opening access and increasing maintenance on our public lands.”

Industry watchers say sector players like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) are probably happy that the push to legalize cannabis in Montana is being closely linked with the need to preserve the natural environment of the state.

420 with CNW – 500,000 Australians Could Soon Access Medical Marijuana

The past couple of years have seen cannabidiol (“CBD”) become firmly established within the mainstream consciousness. Filled with potent medicinal properties, the hemp extract has captured the attention of millions all over the world, and many have turned to CBD to help cure what ails them. However, the fact that it isn’t officially recognized as a medicine makes most doctors squeamish about prescribing CBD, forcing patients to find outside sources.

Thanks to Melbourne-based medical cannabis company Montu, half a million chronically ill Australians could now be able to access medical marijuana without having to use backdoor channels. The firm has created a network of doctors who support the use of CBD as a treatment, thus providing a lifeline for the multitude of Australians who could greatly benefit from CBD but cannot access it lawfully.

Melbourne resident Annee Angell, for instance, has long been looking for the right treatment for her 40 year old, blind, and non-verbal daughter, Lindsey, who suffers from severe seizures. Although she discovered CBD four years ago, she was forced to seek a “backdoor supplier” since the product was considered illegal. “I couldn’t consult my GP because I feared I would get in trouble,” she confesses.

Despite the fact that medical cannabis was legalized in Victoria in 2016, Lindsey’s neurologist refused to prescribe CBD. “I asked for a prescription but he flat out refused because he feared he would become ‘the guy’ and be inundated with CBD prescription requests,” Angell says. Once she had procured CBD through other means, Lindsey went from having four seizures every week to just one on average.

Although she eventually found a GP who was willing to prescribe CBD, he only gave Lindsey a small dose of 4mg per day, a far cry from the 40mg she needed to reduce seizures. “I felt like he was too nervous to give her a higher dose because he didn’t really understand CBD. Doctors and pharmacists are scared of it. The biggest problem is the stereotype that it gets you high. This is not true. I would never put Lindsey in that position,” Angell says.

According to Dr. Joel Wren, who practices from the AHA Seaford Day and Night Clinic in South Australia and has been prescribing medical cannabis to patients for a little over a year, the struggle Angell, Lindsey, and other patients go through to gain access to medical marijuana is not uncommon. “It’s absolutely awful people have to rely on these black market sources.” If Montu’s network of medical cannabis doctors pans out, patients like Lindsey who need CBD will be able to get it through the proper channels.

Experts say companies like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) are glad when patients across the globe begin getting access to medical marijuana in order to get some relief from their health challenges.

420 with CNW – Marijuana-Infused Products Are Not Attracting New Consumers, Survey Finds

According to a survey that was released earlier this week (on Tuesday), new marijuana users make up about a quarter of all legal Canadian cannabis consumers. However, many seem to be shying away from cannabis-infused products, which were created for the sole purpose of drawing in more consumers into the market.

This survey, which was conducted by the Brightfield Group, had 3,000 Canadian marijuana users participate in the survey. They discovered that new marijuana consumers, including those who began consuming marijuana after the drug was legalized in 2018, account for 25% of legal marijuana purchases in the year’s second quarter. This shows that the regulated cannabis market is amassing increased consumer interest in Canada. The participants were also polled in a quarterly series that examined the impact marijuana legalization has had on the market.

According to the managing director of Brightfield Group, Bethany Gomez, the arrival of cheaper products in the legal marijuana market that compete with prices from the illicit market directly has influenced a significant increase in consumption.

The survey also discovered other factors that attracted new consumers included increased familiarity with legal dealers and the expanding product menus.

In a phone interview, Gomez said that the cheaper products were more popular with new marijuana consumers. The affordability of the products makes it easier for the consumers to indulge as compared to a good product that may be offered at an expensive price.

The CEO of Sessions Cannabis, Steven Fry, who is a marijuana retailer with 7 functional stores in Ontario, agrees with Gomez as affordable prices are growing his consumer base. He adds that about 15 of the 20 most bought items in his store can be qualified under ‘value’ brands and that these brands are dominating the market.

The Brightfield survey also discovered that dried flower products were very popular among new marijuana users, with polls showing that 43% of them purchased marijuana in dried flower form, another 37% purchased marijuana gummies and an additional 27% preferring chocolate. Vape pens made up 15% of new marijuana user purchases.

However, the data also exhibits the stagnant interest in marijuana-infused products like gummies and edibles, which were supposed to attract consumers who did not like inhaling marijuana in the first half of this year.

Gomez admits that the consumers are not responding to these supplementary marijuana products the way that producers expected. These are interesting statistics and sector players like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) are likely to think hard about the implications of this survey upon future consumption habits.

420 with CNW – How to Be an Eco-Friendly Marijuana Consumer

There are various ways to consume marijuana. Unfortunately, most of these consumption methods create waste.  According to an EPA report from July 2018, Americans recycle almost 34.7% of waste. Up until January of this year, the United States exported roughly half of that plastic waste overseas to be recycled. Since China stopped accepting foreign waste for recycling, millions of tons of recyclable waste may end up in the ocean or landfills this year.

However, PL28, a company actively involved in cleaning up plastic from the oceans and converting it into packaging for the marijuana industry may have a way out of this predicament.

The CEO and founder of the company, Jayson Adam Stewart, states that his company chose to center their attention on the marijuana industry because they had an opportunity to shape the growth of the cannabis industry. He added that marijuana consumers had the real power of choosing not to buy from brands that are not responsible for their choice of materials.

Below, we discuss other ways to make sure that you are a sustainable marijuana consumer.

  1. Grow your own marijuana outdoors

Today, many states have enacted laws that allow adult-use or medical marijuana consumers to grow their own marijuana. In the event that you are not able to grow your own supply, maybe because it is not allowed in your location, some states may have no qualms with allowing patients to have someone grow the plants for you.

To reduce energy use, grow outdoors if it is possible in your locality. Additionally, you should bear in mind that there are sustainable options for soil, water supply, pesticides and light sources.  The internet is a great source for other environmentally friendly growing methods if you’d like to do more research.

  1. Avoid creating vape waste

Disposable vape cartridges and pens are one of the easiest ways to introduce cannabinoids into one’s systems. However, they aren’t healthier than smoking, despite the praises being pedaled, and they also create loads of toxic waste. As recycling programs of vape cartridges and batteries aren’t as widespread for now, consider getting a refillable vape instead.

  1. Purchase your supply from a local source

Buying your marijuana supply locally not only supports your local small-scale organic farmer but also:

  • Ensures the money stays in the community, which is good for development
  • Reduces the distance that the product has to be shipped; this reduces pollution and also promotes better air quality
  • Your product is less likely to be tampered with or spoiled if you buy local
  1. Smoke more sustainably

Instead of using lighters, which destroy terpenes and emit flint powder, switch to hemp wick. This hemp, which is dipped in beeswax, burns at a safer temperature and it reduces the number of lighters that may end up in a land fill.

The temptation to be the sexy guy who just happens to have a lighter to light a distressed damsel’s joint like in the old movies, is over. Surprise her with hemp wick. Show her how sustainable you are!

Experts say cannabis companies like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) welcome all innovators who can make the pot industry even more sustainable.

420 with CNW – House Vote to Federally Legalize Marijuana Postponed

A congressional vote on a measure to legalize marijuana that was to be carried out in this week will no longer take place.

This comes a fortnight after Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that the vote was being planned for the week of September 21. Hoyer stated that the MORE Act remained an important part of the House Democrats’ plan that advanced criminal justice reform and addresses systemic racism. He added that they are committed to making sure the House votes on the bill before the year’s end.

However, at this time, the House is focused on addressing the coronavirus pandemic and securing agreement to avoid a detrimental government shutdown. Though no scheduled date has been confirmed, the House will, in the autumn, pass the MORE Act, which is a key step forward in making the U.S. justice system fair for all Americans.

It seems the decision to postpone the vote was greatly influenced by certain Democrats who expressed the concern that voting on a marijuana reform bill when coronavirus relief legislation has still not been resolved would hurt their re-election campaigns. Earlier last Tuesday, Hoyer stated that their priorities were a COVID-19 relief bill and approving a continuing resolution, but seemed to be on the fence about the MORE Act advancement to the House.

The speculation has now been confirmed though, the House will not be voting on the MORE Act this week.

Rep. Barbara Jean Lee (D-CA), the Congressional Cannabis Caucus co-chair said earlier on Wednesday that she was okay with delaying the MORE Act vote if that meant that more members would sign onto the bill. However, she recently said in an interview that lawmakers would do everything necessary in the coming week to build more support and ensure that the vote happened sooner, rather than later.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, Rep. Earl Francis Blumenauer and Rep. Barbara Lee stated that they had worked to build support for this historic bill and looked forward to a vote in the coming week.

The MORE Act would expunge the records of individuals who have prior cannabis convictions as well as federally deschedule marijuana. It would also open up alternative channels for the resentencing of individuals who have been jailed for cannabis offenses and defend immigrants from being denied citizenship over marijuana while also preventing federal agencies from denying security clearances or public benefits due to cannabis use.

Additionally, the MORE Act would impose a 5% state tax on marijuana sales and the revenue would be reinvested in the communities that were most affected by the drug war.

With more than two-thirds of Americans leaning in favor of legalizing marijuana, the House Vote on the bill is bound to pass with a majority, despite the delay.

This postponement of the widely anticipated vote is likely to be a disappointment to sector players like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) who have been longing for marijuana policy changes at the federal level.

420 with CNW – How Switching to Hemp Paper Could Result in a Sustainable Future

Despite the fact that we are living in a digital age, the most digital our world has ever been, our paper consumption has grown in the last 2 decades by 126%. Each year, approximately 208 million tons of paper are used globally. Many of these products of paper are single use and after, they are thrown away.

So, is there a more environmentally friendly way of making paper that does not involve cutting down billions of trees every year? Yes, paper made from hemp.

In early American history, hemp paper was commonly used. However, the legal restrictions that have been imposed on the cultivation of hemp have made it hard for the paper industry to dive into this sector. Hemp activists are however not letting the matter rest as they continue educating the nation on the various ways that hemp paper could help in shifting our current environmental crisis into a more sustainable future.

Here are a few reasons why everyone should switch to hemp paper.

  • Hemp is a Renewable Resource

Hemp is a highly renewable paper source. This does not mean trees aren’t renewable, they are. Replacing a tree that has been cut down takes between 20-80 years while hemp plants can be planted and harvested in 4 months. Switching to hemp paper produces more paper for the amount of land being used to grow the hemp plants and also saves our forests from more deforestation.

  • Hemp Helps Purify the Soil

Hemp improves the soil it grows in. It does this through pulling the toxic materials out of the soil using its roots, a process referred to as phytoremediation.

Hemp is so good at this that it has been used around Chernobyl to help clean up radioactive contaminants, remnants of the famous nuclear explosion. The plant has also been used to remove dioxins in the soil in Italy, which is ironic since dioxins are the toxic chemicals that are used to bleach wood in order to make paper.

  • Hemp Does Not Require Toxic Compounds to Make Paper

When making paper using wood, dioxins and chlorine is used to whiten the paper. These chemicals are poisonous and can pollute waterways.

On the other hand, hemp is whitened using hydrogen peroxide, which does not poison waterways like dioxins, making it the more environmentally-friendly option.

  • Hemp is Both Stronger and Longer Lasting

Hemp creates paper that is more durable and much stronger in comparison to paper from wood. Paper from wood also yellows and decomposes quickly while hemp, which is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world, does not yellow or decompose with age.

  • Hemp can be Recycled More Times than Wood Paper

Recycling makes a huge difference in everything. While paper from wood can only be recycled 3 times before it becomes unusable, hemp paper can be recycled up to 8 times.

Despite these advantages, legal restrictions and having only 23 paper mills globally that can make hemp paper makes hemp paper expensive and also difficult to find.

With an increase in demand though, this may change. When buying paper products, ask for hemp versions, from packaging to printer paper to rolling papers. A small step by many in one direction may influence a huge change in the world, so shop hemp. That would answer the wish of cannabis companies like Pac Roots Cannabis Corp. (CSE: PACR) who firmly believe that different forms of cannabis aren’t only good for the economy, they are also outstandingly good for the environment.
