420 with CNW – Consumers Seem to Be Gravitating Toward Cheap Marijuana, for Now

Marijuana consumers are considering their wallets when purchasing weed, and all they want is cheap marijuana with high THC content.

In the past few years, several marijuana companies have developed high-quality, premium products, and these products are displayed on dispensary shelves. The companies believed that marijuana consumers would prefer luxurious marijuana products, just like the way beer consumers gravitate toward craft beer and aged whiskey in the spirits industry. The older generation and newbies are most likely to buy top-of-the-line marijuana to ease their concerns about the new world of cannabis, the companies thought.

Some of the marijuana companies thought that consumers would purchase a gram of weed at $100, but this is not happening. After Canada launched its marijuana market, marijuana consumers have shifted towards cheaper marijuana products, and mid-to-high quality products have lost their market share.

On a conference call last week, the CFO of Aurora Cannabis Glen Ibbott said that last summer, the Canadian marijuana market had only 2% of cheap weed in their supply. The number has now increased to 17% with cheap pot going for even less than C$9, which is equivalent to $6.79 in U.S. dollars. At the same time, the high-quality marijuana market share has dropped to 17% from the previous mid-30s.

The drop in the premium products market share has affected Aurora Cannabis very severely since the company’s primary focus is selling premium quality products.  In the past twelve months, Aurora Cannabis posted $1 billion quarterly losses, and its pot stock prices dropped by 80%. The CEO of Aurora Cannabis Terry Booth announced that he would be resigning and that the company would also implement a cost-cutting plan. Last week Aurora Cannabis announced the launch of a cheaper marijuana product known as The Daily Special.

Marijuana consumers are speaking with their wallets, and all they want is cheap marijuana that has a high THC concentration, meaning consumers want big highs at low cost. Speaking with MarketWatch, PI Financial Analyst Jason Zanderberg said that he expected that the demand for affordable marijuana would eventually arise and that many executives and insiders were caught unawares because it happened earlier than they had expected.

Zanderberg further said that although the production of marijuana is more than its demand in the market today, he did not expect the price of weed to drop this soon with just over one year since Canada legalized recreational cannabis.

These findings in Canada are likely to provide related companies like Champignon Brands Inc. and Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) since such insights can reshape the direction that a company had planned to take.

420 with CNW – Border Patrol Union Boss Admits Legalizing Pot Forces Illicit Players Out

On Friday, the head of the labor union representing U.S. Border Patrol agents acknowledged that cartel activities are being disrupted by the states where marijuana is legal.

Although the President of the National Border Patrol Council, Brandon Judd, tried to downplay the impact of legalization, he was inadvertently making a case for the regulation of all illegal drugs by saying that cartels might start smuggling other commodities when marijuana is legalized within the states.

Judd made an appearance on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal when he made these remarks, and while he was there, a caller said that legalization of marijuana within the U.S. states has helped put an end to drug cartels more than the DEA could ever think.

Judd further said that as far as drugs go, U.S. states enforce the law, but do not sit down and determine what those laws are. On Friday, Judd is scheduled to meet President Trump. Judd also noted that the Border Patrol Unit would not be seizing marijuana if Congress legalizes it.

He said that when marijuana is legalized, the cartels transition to another drug that will fetch them profits. Judd also noted that legalizing marijuana does not mean that they will stop their businesses; it only means that they will get more innovative and they will start smuggling opioids, such as fentanyl.

However, Judd did not recommend the legalization of other drugs as a potential solution to removing all sources of profits for the cartels. Last December, former presidential candidate Andrew Yang said that legalizing certain drugs can be used to fight the illegal drug trade.

Border Patrol data on drug seizures within the country shows that after the legalization of marijuana at the state level, the demand for the product on the black market seems to have reduced. Cato Institute submitted a report in 2018 that showed that a significant decrease in illegal drug trade could be attributed to state-level reform efforts.

Besides, there has been a decrease in marijuana trafficking cases at the federal level since U.S. states started legalizing marijuana, and the markets are well regulated.

The U.S. Chief Justice, John Roberts, in his annual report said that last year, he noticed a decrease in federal marijuana prosecutions, which is an indication that the black market is drying up since people are now buying weed from the legal marijuana market.

Analysts believe that marijuana sector players like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) have always known that it will only be a matter of time before law enforcement agencies begin admitting that legalization is a more effective way to squeeze out the blackmarket that denies states revenue and exposes consumers to untold risks.

420 with CNW – Poll Shows Most Kentuckians Support Legalizing Pot

Support for marijuana legalization has changed dramatically over the last few years, with more and more states legalizing either medical or recreational marijuana. However, some states are more conservative than others; for instance, in Kentucky, cannabis is not legal either for medical or adult-use purposes.

However, a recent survey by Kentucky Health Issues Poll (KHIP) in 2019 showed that in the last decade, support for marijuana legalization has been rising within the state. And it was the first time more than half of the residents of Kentucky who were surveyed said that they were in favor of marijuana for any use. The majority of the survey participants said that they in favor of medical marijuana, while a little less than half said that they were in favor of recreational marijuana.

Chubinski said that from KHIP 2012 and KHIP 2019, there is a notable shift in public opinion about marijuana reform in Kentucky. But, it is essential to note that during that timeframe, the policy landscape about marijuana has shifted as well.

According to the survey, nine out of 10 people said they are in favor of medical marijuana consumption, which is an increase from eight out of 10 people in 2012. Support for medical marijuana has increased from 38 percent in 2012 to 59 percent in 2019, while support for adult-use marijuana increased to 49 percent in 2019 from 26 percent in 2012.

In a statement, the vice president of research and evaluation Jennifer Chubinski said that support for marijuana legalization for any use or adult-use purposes was more likely to attract support from the Democrats more than the Republicans or Independents.

The University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research conducted the survey, and they used 1,559 adults residing in Kentucky. The poll which came shortly after the 2019 Health Policy Conference was sponsored by The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Interact for Health. The focus of the conference was the impact that reforming marijuana laws has on the public.

Some of the topics that were raised during the conference that gathered prohibitionists and conservatives were the increased potency of marijuana plants. Other topics include how to measure the correct dosage, preventing young adults from using weed, impaired driving, and risks of accidental poisonings.  The poll results showed that there was a decrease in marijuana consumption among teens from 29% in 1997 to 16% in 2019. According to the survey, forty percent of Kentuckian adults have a friend or family who consumes marijuana regularly.

Although Kentucky officials are concerned over the common issues raised during the conference, other states in the U.S. are legalizing both medical and recreational marijuana, and it is clear that residents of Kentucky are ready to legalize marijuana.

It would be interesting to hear what sector players like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) have to say about the chances of full marijuana legalization happening in Kentucky this year.

420 with CNW – Netflix Bows to Singapore Government Pressure to Block Marijuana Shows

The majority of us got to see the humanization of marijuana users through film and television, but Singapore is working to make sure that its citizens would not be able to access films with marijuana content. According to a new report issued by Netflix, the company has removed all movies that have marijuana contents as a move to comply with several demands made by the government of Singapore. This included three-pieces of marijuana-themed shows known as Cooking on High, The Legend of 420, and Disjointed.

They also removed Martin Scorsese’s films that had overt drug use and partying themes such as The Last Temptation of Christ and a Brazilian comedy, The Last Hangover. Netflix further disclosed that since 2015, it has received a total of nine take-down requests internationally.

Axios reported first on the issue of censorship this Friday, and since Netflix’s aim is to grow internationally, the company’s intention is to be transparent in the way it handles censorship efforts in the areas they are looking to invest. The company promised that every year, it will be disclosing all the censorship requests. Netflix further said that the content removed would only apply to the country that made the request, and other countries can still access the content.

Singapore is one of the countries known to have the most stringent drug control laws across the globe. Individuals found in possession of even small amounts of drugs are severely punished with a maximum of 10 years in prison or fine of $20,000 or both. Individuals found trafficking drugs are punished through execution.

The national Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said countries all over the world are inclining towards the global trends of decriminalization and legalization of marijuana and other drugs, but the government of Singapore isn’t interested in adopting the trends. The bureau further said that marijuana consumption exacts a high cost on society in countries that have approved legalization; therefore, Singapore has harsh laws on use, possession, trafficking, and importation or exportation of unlawful drugs such as marijuana and marijuana products.

The stringent drug policies coincide with a reduction in rates of drug use and substance use disorder, the officials argued.

According to the CNB estimates, the number of drug abusers arrested last year was about 2000 while those detained in the early 1990s was 6,000, which shows the number has reduced by two-thirds since the 1990s. However, although the agency claims that marijuana consumption causes harm to society, the available research on the effects of medical marijuana legalization in the U.S. shows that it does not lead to increased consumption among young adults nor does it have any impact on people participating in more dangerous activities such as smoking tobacco or using alcohol.

Malaysia borders Singapore to the North and in an attempt to treat substance use disorder as a public health issue, Malaysia is considering decriminalizing small amounts of cannabis.

Industry analysts believe that cannabis companies, such as Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF), may be dismayed that Singapore hasn’t yet appreciated the current research on marijuana and how it can be beneficial.

420 with CNW – Jamaica is Helping Small Unlicensed Marijuana Growers to Go Legit

The Jamaican government is offering small-scale farmers who are cultivating marijuana illegally a way out by transitioning them into licensed growers in an effort to eliminate the black market.

Instead of punishing unlicensed growers, the government is helping them transition into the regulated marijuana market to raise awareness, eradicate poverty, and promote sustainable development in the country.

In a press release, the Jamaican Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture, and Fisheries, Floyd Green said that the program (Alternative Development Plan) is focusing on community groups. Green further noted that they are starting with a group of weed farmers, where they provide the seeds, reduced requirements to participate in the program, and they also take them through a learning process.

Green further said that the Alternative Development Plan started in Accompong, St. Elizabeth, and farmers are currently cultivating marijuana and selling it to the medical marijuana sector. She noted that the farmers had grown a total of 44 pounds of cannabis so far.

Green declared that the program implementation has been successful.

In the press release, Green also said that the Alternative Development Plant will now be implemented in other communities to provide quality weed to the Jamaican medical marijuana industry.

The Marijuana Licensing Authority in Jamaica recently announced that it had been exploring a transitional licensing program that would allow small marijuana growers to grow and sell their weed to the medical sector for a maximum of 18 months before they are licensed.

Speaking on a Jamaican radio show, the CLA director of enforcement and monitoring, Faith Graham, said that since small-time farmers cannot afford a cultivator license, which is a must before one can grow marijuana, a transitional permit would be ideal for small scale marijuana farmers.

When Jamaica updated its Dangerous Drugs Act in 2015, it decriminalized marijuana.

Marijuana consumers are allowed to possess a maximum of 57 grams of weed or two ounces of dried marijuana bud; however, if they are caught having it in their possession while wandering out, they are at risk of being given a ticket of $3.

It is prohibited to smoke marijuana or cigarettes in public.

In 2018, locals and tourists had a place to buy and smoke marijuana as dispensaries started opening their doors. The dispensaries in Jamaica are likened to a doctor’s clinic or a coffee shop and hipster boutique. The dispensaries accept only cash.

Tree of Knowledge International Corporation announced that it would be the first marijuana company to be listed on the CSE and Jamaican Stock Exchange. Courtney Betty, who is the company’s consultant for international business development, said that they are hoping this move will attract new investors and strengthen the company’s access to the region.

Betty further said that TOK’s focus is on the treatment of pain using medical marijuana since Jamaica has some of the most potent pain-relieving marijuana strains, and the company wanted access to them.

Being listed on the Jamaican Stock Exchange would also appeal to the Jamaicans living in the diaspora who are looking for ways to invest, said Betty. She noted that being listed will therefore give them a broad investor base.

Industry watchers say that the approach taken to bring small growers into the legal cannabis industry is one that marijuana companies like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) applaud since it spreads the opportunities to as many people in different communities as possible.

420 with CNW – Chicago Passenger Caught Stealing from Marijuana Amnesty Box

Last week on Wednesday, an incoming traveler at Midway Airport stole marijuana from one of the marijuana amnesty boxes situated at the facility, said the Chicago Police.

The cannabis amnesty boxes were installed a few weeks ago, and they coincided with adult-use marijuana legalization in Illinois. The amnesty boxes are for passengers who are boarding their flights at Midway or O’Hare airports to dispose of the unused marijuana products since no one is allowed to board a plane with any shred of weed.

According to local media sources, during routine checks on Wednesday evening around 8 p.m., the police noticed that marijuana was missing from one of the amnesty boxes. When they checked the surveillance footage near the location of the box, the police saw a man reach inside and remove the weed several hours before. The police believe that the man was an incoming passenger.

During an earlier security check, one of the passengers was found with the weed and was forced to leave it behind, thus placing it in the amnesty box. It is this weed that another passenger stole. As of last Friday, they had not identified the man, but authorities say that it shouldn’t be possible for someone to access the contents of the amnesty boxes.

The chief of communications with the Chicago police, Anthony Guglielmi, said that the marijuana amnesty boxes were placed at the airports in Chicago to make sure that travelers complied with the federal and local state laws of their destinations. Guglielmi also noted that in the coming weeks, they would replace the temporary amnesty boxes with other boxes to prevent theft, making them secure and hinder anyone from looting their contents.

The Department of Aviation in Chicago and the Chicago police were tasked with overseeing, emptying, and discarding the content found inside the 12 boxes.

The TSA clarified that it is legal to have marijuana at the airports, but it is unlawful to fly with drugs since the federal authorities regulate the airspace, and marijuana is federally illegal.

Speaking to local media at the beginning of the month, the TSA spokesperson said that the agency does not search for marijuana-infused products during security checks across the U.S., but TSA agents are under obligation to report if they discover any drugs or substances that are illegal as per the federal law. After the report is made, local police determine the next course of action.

Other airports that have installed amnesty boxes include McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and Colorado Springs Airport in Colorado.

Analysts believe that marijuana companies like Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQX: PLPRF) may be shocked that the amnesty boxes were not designed to prevent unauthorized access, such as what happened at the Chicago airport.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Plus Products Inc. (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQB: PLPRF) Establishing Itself as Strong CPG Company in California Market

Plus Products (CSE: PLUS) (OTCQB: PLPRF), a hemp and cannabis food company using nature to bring balance to consumers’ lives, is executing a strategy to become the world’s strongest cannabis brand by establishing itself as a strong Consumer Packaged Goods (“CPG”) company in California. Following its success in the Golden State, the company plans to move on to new markets, products and consumers (http://cnw.fm/O0fDc). An article discussing the company reads, “In identifying key steps in its plan, PLUS conducted extensive research. As a result, PLUS noted that the strongest companies in the world are typically built by focusing on becoming the best at one thing. As prime examples of this, PLUS cites Cargill in the agriculture sector, Coca-Cola and Budweiser in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) sector and Target and Walgreens in the retail sector. With those companies as examples, PLUS chose to become ‘hyperfocused’ on building a brand in the CPG cannabis space, because CPG brands have the highest value potential in traditional industries. . . . After continued analysis and study, Plus Products notes in its investor presentation that brands are typically built on the foundation of an iconic product. PLUS has been determined to establish an iconic product in the edibles sector, which offers the most defensible price premiums. The company has done exactly what it set out to do: offering iconic cannabis gummies — Plus Uplift and Plus Unwind — that have been ranked the top two best-selling cannabis products in California, controlling 21% of the gummies market share in the state.”
