Smart Investment Leads to Big Opportunities in Growing Cannabis Market

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: As the cannabis market grows, companies are seizing the opportunity to make strategic investments in the sector and establish a foothold in the promising space.

  • Cannabis and related products are legal in an ever-increasing number of jurisdictions.
  • Businesses have responded with an increasingly diverse range of products.
  • Companies making the smartest investments, such as carefully selected mergers and acquisitions, are in the best position to profit from this while minimizing risks.

SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) (SING Profile) has invested in a number of other cannabis companies to grow its portfolio and leverage its position in the market. Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) (MCOA Profile), with its hemp-oriented business, is expecting a surge in profits following the crop’s federal legalization in the United States in December. Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTC: MJNA), the first publicly traded cannabis company in the United States, has seen record sales. PotNetwork Holdings Inc. (OTC: POTN) is reaching out to new customers with a CBD-infused slushy machine. And American Premium Water Corp. (OTC: HIPH) is also pushing CBD into the soft drinks market with its infused water.

A Big Year for Big Investment in Cannabis

This year looks to be an important year in the development of the cannabis market. The legal groundwork for those changes was laid last year, with significant legislation moving forward in Canada, the United States and elsewhere. With the legal aspects in place, fresh opportunities for the market to grow and for companies to make bold moves within the sector have become more frequent — and look to be more profitable.

This momentum is fueling the ongoing development of two important trends. One is product diversification, as cannabis companies and the businesses supporting them develop a wider range of products for an increasingly varied market. The other is big investment, as both the larger cannabis companies and outside businesses with big bank balances move to carve out chunks of the market. Money is flowing in, making the most of the opportunities that legal and product changes provide.

A Changing Global Context

Things have been looking rosy for cannabis for some time, and last year saw significant growth in the sector continue. SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING), a young tech company that has moved into the cannabis sector, saw its revenue hit the $1 million mark. In addition, like many cannabis companies, the company ended the year expecting even better things to come, with a prediction that revenue will dramatically increase over the next 12 months.

How can companies in a relatively untried sector make such bold claims?

The answer lies in the changing attitude of lawmakers to cannabis. The prohibitory model for managing the drug that has dominated for half a century is increasingly recognized as not just ineffective but harmful to public health. Consequently, governments are legalizing cannabis for medical use. And in the most forward-looking cases, they are creating regulated markets for recreational cannabis, most significantly in Canada, which made the trade legal nationally last October.

For American companies such as SinglePoint, change has come on a state-by-state basis. Though the majority of Americans favor legalization, the federal government has been too reliant on conservative voters to support nationwide change. Instead, individual states have created legal markets, with Michigan becoming one of the most recent when cannabis went legal there in December. Two-thirds of U.S. states now allow medical cannabis, and one in five have legalized its recreational use, with more expected to follow over the next few years. This has allowed SinglePoint to begin investing in cannabis without having to consider a national cannabis business.

December saw a significant step towards wider legalization. Following months of wrangling, the 2018 Farm Bill passed into law, making industrial hemp legal on the federal level. This nonpsychoactive from of cannabis has provided many companies, including SinglePoint, with an important entry point into the sector, as the chemical cannabidiol (CBD), which can be derived from hemp, can be more widely sold than other forms of cannabis. CBD’s meteoric rise has given a further boost to the sector, especially to companies entering via this route.

The Farm Bill will allow cannabis businesses to grow significantly through hemp and provide a precedent as federal politicians reconsider the wider cannabis industry.

Product Diversification

Now that they have more opportunities to produce cannabis, companies are doing what companies always do — finding new ways to sell their products and services. This has led to a wave of innovation and an increasingly diverse range of cannabis-based products.

Two of the biggest areas for innovation are the creation of confectionaries and beauty products. The former have obvious appeal as a way to consume cannabis without smoking it. The latter are a natural fit given the suggested well-being benefits of CBD and THC, along with the willingness of customers to try new plant-based beauty products. But even more innovative products are hitting the market, such as Phyto-Bites, a product SinglePoint distributes on its website SingleSeed.com, designed to improve the health and well-being of pets.

Human health and well-being remain a huge driver for innovation in cannabis. Aware of that, SinglePoint has also been adding health and wellness products to its sales lines. Its SingleSeed store recently unveiled a range of TorusMed Hemp CBD products to its offerings. The new products include treatments such as Sport Relief Topical Cream, an ointment designed to provide pain relief for professional and amateur athletes.

Smart Investing in the Cannabis Sector

The growth of the cannabis sector has inevitably led to some instability. Companies are operating in a space that didn’t even exist 20 years ago. The sector is evolving quickly, with the last few years triggering a wave of consolidation, and of course in a fast-changing market, there will be challenges and bumps along the way. Amid all this, working out how to investment smartly has become critical.

A lot of the secrets to smart investing in cannabis are the same as for any sector: do research, understand the businesses being invested in, have a plan and stick with it. Understanding the specific circumstances of the cannabis market is essential, and the big trend within the industry over the past year has been mergers and acquisitions, as companies such as SinglePoint have expanded through investment in promising companies that provide products and services that will complement and support its strategy.

SinglePoint’s most recent investment has been in TorusMed, a company developing new ways to optimize CBD output from hemp and therefore increase the profitability of this part of the cannabis sector. With hemp on the verge of a new boom thanks to the Farm Bill, SinglePoint has used its understanding of the market to invest in a company that appears to offer great potential to make the most of this moment.

Moves like this can put a company in a strong position heading into what looks to be a big year for cannabis. “[This year] will be a banner year for SinglePoint,” said SinglePoint CEO Greg Lambrecht. “We are equipped with the proper funding, partners and opportunities to be firing on all cylinders. We as a team expect to position SingleSeed and SinglePoint as market leads in the CBD market while continuing to enable the founders of the companies we have acquired to grow their businesses. We are well diversified and have large opportunities across many emerging markets that should enable us to be successful into 2019 and beyond.”

New Year, Fresh Growth

Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) is also making the most of the opportunity provided by the Farm Bill and is expecting significant growth off the back of this legal change. The company has a vertically integrated range of cannabis interests, including a hemp farm in Oregon and its hempSMART range of products. The legal changes should allow the company to more easily produce CBD-rich plants and sell the products derived from them without worrying about legal complications for crossing state lines. MCOA will also face lower federal income tax, thanks to the change in hemp’s status, allowing it to keep more profits.

Federal legislation against cannabis production and distribution has hampered the ability of companies to raise funds through public investment in the past, but some have found ways. Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTC: MJNA) was the first cannabis company in the United States to be publicly traded, a move that put it in a strong position both financially and for its public profile. It has recently experienced record sales, buoyed up by the growth of the cannabis market in the U.S. and beyond.

PotNetwork Holdings Inc. (OTC: POTN) has worked hard to develop a wide range of products, answering the increasing demand for product diversity in the cannabis market. The latest of these is the Brain Chill Slushy Machine, provided through its subsidiary Diamond CBD Inc. Initially launching in South Florida, these machines serve slushies in a variety of flavors, all infused with CBD. With millions of gallons of slushies consumed every year, these new machines are designed to provide an appealing introduction to CBD.

Also working on drinkable CBD is American Premium Water Corp. (OTC: HIPH), a diversified luxury consumer products company that bases its range of health and beauty products on biotech research. Its Lalpina CBD water is infused with CBD and features in several recently announced distribution deals, as the company extends its reach in the U.S. and beyond.

Legal changes are encouraging an increasingly diverse cannabis market, in which companies that make smart investments are primed for profit.

More Mergers Expected as Cannabis Sector Heads into New Year of Growth

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: Several years of impressive growth are expected to continue in the cannabis sector in 2019, and companies are making the most of it through mergers and acquisitions.

  • The cannabis industry has seen growth in acquisitions over the past two years.
  • A large part of this comes from the emergence of the hemp/CBD market.
  • Industry commentators expect these trends to continue.

SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) (SING Profile) is tapping into this exciting potential through a strategy of well-financed acquisitions and investment in other cannabis companies. PotNetwork Holdings Inc. (OTC: POTN) has built up a series of subsidiaries and is now reaching out to mainstream markets with its products. KushCo Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: KSHB) has recently established new supply arrangements that will increase its already growing profits. Following the legalization of hemp farming, CV Sciences Inc. (OTCQB: CVSI) has become one of the United States’ first certified hemp producers. And The Green Organic Dutchman (OTCQX: TGODF) (TSX: TGOD) (TGOD Profile) is building improved cultivation facilities to meet the demand of cannabis’s growing customer base.

The Cannabis Merger Boom

Over the past year, the cannabis industry has seen a significant new trend emerge. So far, the industry has mostly been made up of small businesses, but a series of mergers and acquisitions have started to change the layout of the land. The larger, more confident cannabis businesses have started to absorb their smaller competitors, creating businesses with greater efficiency, vertical integration and increased market shares.

This boom in cannabis mergers and acquisitions extends beyond committed cannabis companies. Top-tier businesses have started paying attention to the sector, buying substantial holdings in cannabis companies. Cannabis companies themselves have encouraged this interest, seeking outside help to fuel their growth.

The Merger Market

For companies building a strategy around cannabis acquisitions, such as SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING), current trends are legitimizing what they already held to be true — that there’s great potential in building larger, more diverse cannabis companies through mergers and acquisitions.

The numbers are clear. Eighty-six cannabis companies in the United States were targeted for mergers and acquisitions in 2017, and that number rose to 140 in 2018. That’s a significant increase two years in a row for an industry that’s previously been driven by small start-ups, and commentators expect the trend to continue. In Canada, recreational legalization has triggered an intensive period of ambitious growth. In the United States, the illegality of transporting cannabis across state lines has discouraged expansion beyond the state level, but companies are starting to overcome that barrier, finding ways to run nationwide businesses in a state-by-state market.

For SinglePoint, this means making moves such as the company’s recent significant investment in TorusMed, an organization working on finding new ways to grow industrial hemp. Hemp is an important subset of the cannabis industry — and one that looks set to expand, thanks to federal legalization of the crop under the 2018 Farm Bill.

The bill allows cultivators to grow hemp for cannabidiol (CBD), an increasingly popular component, without the restrictions placed on other forms of cannabis. SinglePoint’s work with TorusMed is aimed at producing more consistent crops of high-CBD hemp with lower costs because of TorusMed’s greater efficiency. The investment appears to provide an effective way for SinglePoint to gain an advantage in the cannabis sector across the United States and beyond.

SinglePoint’s investment in TorusMed isn’t an isolated example. SinglePoint has built a solid strategy around acquisitions and investment. SinglePoint President Wil Ralston appeared on MoneyTV to discuss the company’s financing options for acquisitions, and in November, SinglePoint announced that it had raised $5 million in fresh funding from its own investors for the explicit purpose of fueling this approach. Thanks to the confidence of the market in the future of cannabis, SinglePoint has had no trouble raising funds or gaining attention for its work.

A Growing Industry

One of the reasons SinglePoint has seen such success in finding funding is the wider growth of the cannabis sector.

In the United States, where SinglePoint is based, cannabis legalization has steadily been spreading on a state level. Thirty-three states have now made the drug legal for medical purposes, while 10 have made recreational cannabis legal. North of the border, Canada has become the first G8 country to legalize cannabis nationally, not only setting an international precedent but also generating interest from American companies. The spread of public health solutions to cannabis use over prohibitory ones has become an international trend, creating a global cannabis market.

Over the past five years, this trend has led in a surprising direction: hemp and CBD. Hemp is a form of cannabis that doesn’t contain THC, the chemical that produces a high in users. Related to that trend, researchers have found growing evidence that CBD, a nonpsychoactive ingredient found in all strains of cannabis, may be beneficial for health and well-being.

This promising research has led to a surge in hemp cultivation and even the legalization of hemp farming in the United States, a move that is expected to provide a lifeline for many struggling farmers. Hemp cultivation is an increasingly large portion of the cannabis market, and one that the deal with TorusMed will help SinglePoint access.

Based on both this shift for hemp and wider trends, commentators are predicting even greater growth in 2019 and beyond; one report has calculated that the industry will be worth $146.4 billion by 2025. Even half that growth would provide a huge opportunity for companies such as SinglePoint, and if the industry actually reaches that figure, current players could be big winners.

Positioning for Advantage

It is in this context that SinglePoint, a company whose other work lies in the tech sector, has made the move to expand its position in cannabis. Through its SingleSeed subsidiary, SinglePoint has become a distributor of hemp-derived CBD products at a critical moment.

“It seems like two years ago I started to hear a little bit about CBD and what it was doing for people,” said SinglePoint CEO Greg Lambrecht. “Momentum has really been building for CBD. People are using it for a variety of things. As CBD becomes legal, you’re going to see this product sold in more traditional stores like Walgreens and 7-Eleven. We’re really excited about our online presence, but we’re also very focused on putting this product into retail too.”

The cannabis market has already been seeing steady growth. The legalization of hemp is likely to continue this promising trend. Companies such as SinglePoint that have raised funding and established a foothold in the hemp sector appear to be well positioned to take advantage of that change.

Lining Up for Growth

Of course, It’s not just a matter of making mergers and acquisitions, it’s making the right ones. Several other companies join SinglePoint in making those sound decisions. Among the companies making significant mergers and acquisitions in cannabis are holding companies such as PotNetwork Holdings Inc. (OTC: POTN). PotNetwork’s subsidiaries cover various parts of the cannabis industry, including production, sales and support; its subsidiaries include Diamond CBD Inc., which produces a line of CBD-based oils, creams and edibles.

Like SinglePoint, KushCo Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: KSHB) has entered the cannabis sector from elsewhere through an interest in providing other services to cannabis companies. In KushCo’s case, this was packaging solutions, the sort of unglamorous but important service that any industry needs. KushCo has since expanded its work in the sector, creating a one-stop shop for cannabis products. This approach paved the way for KushCo to secure new long-term supply arrangements with three large companies, agreements expected to be worth $75 million. Having already seen its quarterly revenues rise 186 percent on the same period last year, 2019 is off to a strong start for KushCo.

CV Sciences Inc. (OTCQB: CVSI) has a business rooted in the fundamentals of the cannabis market, with two distinct business segments: research and development, and consumer products. Following the recent founding of the U.S. Hemp Authority certification program, CV Sciences has become one of the country’s first certified hemp manufacturers. This certification provides CV Science customers assurance about the quality and safety of the company’s products, including verifying that its products are made entirely from hemp and not from other cannabis strains.

The Green Organic Dutchman (OTCQX: TGODF) (TSX: TGOD) produces organic, sustainably grown cannabis, catering to the substantial part of the cannabis market concerned with the environment and ethical farming. The company is building two new growing facilities and has been looking for ways to improve its designs as it builds. Recent improvements will increase production capacity from 156,000kg of cannabis to 202,500kg.

While improvements in technology, techniques and certification are helping companies tap into the growing cannabis sector, mergers and acquisitions are also allowing companies to access all of these while increasing their market share. Those who make the right moves now could benefit from dramatic growth over the next few years.

Changing Attitudes in Washington Offer Promise for Hemp and Cannabis Market

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: Legal changes could soon make transacting business easier for the cannabis industry.

  • Reports indicate that the president plans to reform cannabis laws, making commerce easier for businesses working in states with legal markets.
  • Reforming the law could improve the position of companies working with cannabidiol (CBD) as a food additive and industrial hemp.
  • Hemp and CBD are now large segments of the cannabis sector.
  • These anticipated legal changes are part of a wider international shift.

One of the companies that may benefit from changes in the United States is Marijuana Company of America, Inc. (OTC: MCOA) (MCOA Profile), which works primarily in cultivating industrial hemp and developing CBD products. Tilray, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY), which has affiliates around the world, may use its global experience to adjust to changes in the United States. Research into cannabis by companies such as Cronos Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRON) (TSX: CRON) will become easier, eventually improving product ranges and patient well-being. The legislative shift is also being encouraged by companies such as PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) through efforts at public and industry events. And as industry leaders such as Aphria, Inc. (OTC: APHQF) (TSX: APH) swallow up smaller companies, a stronger, consolidated sector is likely to result.

White House Hints at Cannabis Reform

Spirits have been lifted in the American cannabis industry following a report that the White House is planning to support drug law reform. California Sen. Dana Rohrabacher told Fox Business that insiders around the president have said he intends to push for a reform of cannabis regulation. This would reportedly involve encouraging the federal government to make medical marijuana legal on a national level while leaving the status of recreational cannabis up to individual states.

The reasons behind Rohrabacher’s announcement are clear. As a Republican defending a closely fought seat in a pro-cannabis state, he stands to benefit from convincing his constituents that his party is pro-cannabis. But the stance is also part of a wider trend in politics.

A growing number of politicians from both main parties have shown support for legalization, driven by shifts in public attitudes. Polls this year have indicated that 64 percent of Americans support legalization and 74 percent support legislation that would protect states that legalize cannabis despite the federal government’s opposition. Always happy to ride a high-profile trend, President Donald Trump has previously indicated that he will support a states’ rights agenda on the issue, despite action in the opposite direction by his attorney general.

What will this mean for cannabis companies?

Making Life Easier for Cannabis Companies

Cannabis is already big business in the United States. Nearly two-thirds of states have legalized medical marijuana in some form, and one in five have legalized its recreational use. Clearly, there’s a large legal market to be served. This has led to growth not only for companies catering to those sectors but to those engaging in cannabis in other ways, such as Marijuana Company of America (OTC: MCOA).

MCOA illustrates the variety of ways in which companies are now engaging in the cannabis sector. Rather than producing medical or recreational cannabis, the company has focused on varied uses of industrial hemp, a form of cannabis without the psychoactive qualities. Derivatives of hemp can be used in food, textiles, construction and medicines, making it a versatile and valuable crop.

Within that part of the sector, MCOA has a variety of operations. The company is engaged in two partnerships to improve plant strains and cultivation techniques, and sells a range of products derived from hemp. This range of business opportunities is part of what makes the cannabis sector so profitable, with a value in the billions of dollars in Canada alone.

The potential profits of the sector mean that ambitious companies such as MCOA have been able to raise finance through investment rather than through hard-to-come-by bank loans, which have been in short supply in the United States because of the federal government’s stance toward the plant. Clearing up the contradictions between state and federal laws would make business much easier.

Industrial Hemp

One of the biggest growth areas within the current cannabis market may not necessarily feed into the medical or recreational cannabis markets. That sector is industrial hemp.

Hemp is a form of cannabis that contains only a minimal level of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical that gets cannabis consumers high. Before the general prohibition on cannabis cultivation, hemp was largely used in producing rope and textiles. Now this space is seeing a resurgence thanks to changes in cannabis legislation. MCOA is involved in growing hemp through businesses such as its New Brunswick Hemp Project, one of many companies exploring hemp’s potential.

In the United States, hemp is currently grown legally on sites designated as research and test projects. This was made possible following the 2014 Farm Bill, which included provisions for such sites. The potential for that bill to be expanded this year to full agricultural legalization of hemp is expected to drive spectacular success for farmers who choose to cultivate it. Hemp can be grown outdoors in fields and will grow quickly in a wide range of conditions. Some farmers have predicted that they may see revenues of $90,000 per acre for the crop, compared with only $600 for alfalfa, one of the most popular crops in the United States.

The 2014 Farm Bill expired at the end of September this year, and the bill scheduled to replace it has not yet been passed, thanks to battles on a wide range of issues between Republicans and Democrats. Surprisingly, hemp is fairly noncontroversial. The plant has found cross-party support, with backing for legal reform driven by Republican leaders. As a result, provisions in the bill that would allow for more hemp farming will almost certainly be passed when work on the bill is completed after the November mid-terms.

The updated Farm Bill will make it easier for companies such as MCOA to expand their operations and sell their products. And following reports about cannabis law reforms coming out of the White House, the bill looks likely to become a herald of wider potential.

Hemp’s Big New-Profit Area — CBD

One of the most exciting areas for exploration is how hemp can best be turned into profit. CBD is hemp’s primary active ingredient. Recent research has found a range of uses for CBD in health and wellness products. It’s the extraction of CBD that makes hemp so potentially profitable for modern farmers.

CBD is already being used in a wide variety of products. MCOA’s hempSMART line alone includes pain capsules, a topical pain cream, face cream and pet wellness products. Legal changes will make it easier for companies to research and manufacture products such as these, broadening the scope of the CBD market.

Unregulated CBD grants companies more potential to go international, as its sale is less limited than that of medical and recreational cannabis. MCOA is currently preparing to launch hempSMART into Europe and has appointed a new global sales director to oversee this work.

Legal Changes Affect Many Companies

Whether it’s the Farm Bill or President Trump’s promise to accept a revision of federal laws, the possibility of legal changes has the potential to affect a lot of companies working within the cannabis sector. State-level legalization and changes in Canada’s laws this month have allowed companies to emerge working entirely within this sector.

Like MCOA, Tilray, Inc. (NASDAQ: TLRY) is working beyond the boundaries of the United States. The company has affiliates in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and Portugal, and is now adding Chile to that roster through the acquisition of Alef Biotechnology SpA. Tilray’s products are already used by tens of thousands of patients as well as physicians and researchers around the world. That gives the company existing experience and infrastructure to expand in a reformed American market.

Another company with international reach — Cronos Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: CRON) (TSX: CRON) — is earning a name for itself not just as a supplier of cannabis products but also as a researcher in the arena. Cronos has recently announced a study into the effectiveness of medical cannabis in tackling sleep disorders. Such research will be both easier and more profitable as more countries legalize cannabis.

A sign of the power of the sector is the growing number of holding companies now built around cannabis. PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) is one of those, with subsidiary companies covering cannabis production and related parts of the industry. The company is reaching out to customers through large events such as the 2018 World Vapor Expo, designed to increase the profile of cannabis and remind those in power of the plant’s popularity. Such corporate PR work is increasing the momentum of the movement towards legalization.

The growth of the industry has also led to a series of mergers and acquisitions, as big players consolidate their hold. Aphria, Inc. (OTC: APHQF) (TSX: APH) recently completed acquisitions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, bringing with them supply agreements reaching into Europe and Israel. Liberalization of cannabis laws is becoming a global trend, and as the businesses involved become bigger, so will the push for further reform.

Legal changes appear certain to come to the United States. When they do, there will be plenty of companies making the most of them.

Specific Therapeutic Benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD) Validated by FDA

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: In a landmark announcement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a drug derived from pure cannabidiol (CBD), Epidiolex, to treat seizures associated with certain forms of severe epilepsy, setting the stage for huge changes in the world of cannabidiol (CBD).

  • FDA approval of a cannabis-based drug represents seismic political, legal and economic shifts
  • Approval likely will lead to more clinical research and further validation of CBD therapeutic efficacy
  • CBD market projected to explode to more than $2 billion in two years with 39 percent CAGR

What’s most transformative about this drug approval is that this is the first time the FDA — the governmental arbiter of safe and effective medicine in the United States — has approved any substance derived from the cannabis sativa plant and validated certain therapeutic benefits of cannabidiol. The FDA is, to some extent, endorsing what has been anecdotally accepted by the masses for millennia.

CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can be extracted from the industrial hemp plant, is understandably generating worldwide interest from both the scientific and investment communities. A large part of CBD’s mass appeal is that it’s believed to aid with a broad range of wellness concerns. CBD is known to interact with the human endocannabinoid system, which is found throughout the body’s nervous system, organs, connective tissues, glands and immune system. Research indicates CBD may have the potential to treat a wide range of conditions such as anxiety, high blood pressure, skin issues and chronic pain. It’s being researched to treat Alzheimer’s, and one study even suggests CBD might be a useful addition when given with conventional antipsychotic medications in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Continued rigorous clinical research is being conducted to further confirm all the potential therapeutic benefits that may be found in this cannabinoid extract. In the meantime, the mass appeal of CBD remains unabated, and the market for CBD products continues to grow at an astounding rate. Committed to the legal hemp-derived CBD market, Marijuana Company of America, Inc. (OTC: MCOA) (MCOA Profile) provides consumers with pure, hemp plant-based CBD nutritional products through its global hempSMART™ brand and has initiated broad-ranging, innovative cultivation programs for legal, high-quality hemp. Others vying for position in the burgeoning CBD space include Isodiol International, Inc. (CSE: ISOL) (OTC: ISOLF) (FSE: LB6A.F), CV Sciences, Inc. (OTC: CVSI), PotNetwork Holdings, Inc. (OTC: POTN) and Medical Marijuana, Inc. (OTC: MJNA).

The Boom Has Just Begun

Three years ago, in 2015, the hemp-derived CBD market racked up $90 million in sales. Last year that number reached $190 million in sales — and the boom has just begun. The Hemp Business Journal projects $2.1 billion in total CBD sales by 2020 and estimates that $450 million of that will come from hemp-based sources. The explosive demand projections are attributed to an increased public awareness of the wide-ranging potential health benefits of hemp CBD oil and advancements in cultivation, plus the convenience and reach of online retailing — all of which contribute to a global CBD oil market expected to grow at an eye-popping CAGR of 39.19 percent through 2021.

Hemp Focus

With an overarching focus on the cultivation, development and distribution of legal industrial hemp-derived products, Marijuana Company of America (OTC: MCOA) aims to capture an outsized share of growing worldwide demand. Pure hemp-based consumer nutritional products are at the core of this demand,  and the company has developed a portfolio of ancillary hemp-centric businesses to vertically integrate hemp production and sales. Cultivation of high-quality hemp from portfolio companies feeds MCOA’s proprietary CBD-based formulations, dovetailing to produce the finest quality nutritional supplements on the market.

The unique company vision emanates from Donald Steinberg, MCOA’s CEO. A cannabis industry pioneer, he founded the first cannabinoid-centric company to trade on a U.S. stock market. His vast knowledge and industry experience give MCOA unparalleled insights into the machinations of the CBD markets and the vision to capitalize on industry opportunities in a market projected to exceed $2 billion in the coming years. In keeping with this ambitious strategy, Steinberg and his partner, Charlie Larsen, formed Marijuana Company of America as well its sister company, Canadian-based Global Hemp Group, Inc. (OTC: GBHPF), which is focused on the legal cultivation and processing of industrial hemp. MCOA continues to build an impressive portfolio of synergistic companies across the hemp spectrum. From farm to finished products, MCOA’s socially conscious strategy is to capitalize at each profit point and establish a significant footprint at multiple inflection points across the entire hemp value chain.

Hemp-Based Nutritionals

MCOA has worked to create a recognized and respected hempSMART product line that contains levels of clinically researched ingredients designed to exceed consumer expectations and support the body’s natural endocannabinoid system. To serve health-conscious consumers, hempSMART includes an array of proprietary nutritional products.

  • hempSMART Brain is a patent-pending formulation designed for optimal brain function support.
  • hempSMART Drops offer the highest concentration and potency of full-spectrum bioavailable CBD.
  • hempSMART Pain Capsules contain a blend of premium CBD and botanical supplements.
  • hempSMART Pain Cream is a proprietary formulation for relief from muscle and joint pain.
  • hempSMART Full Spectrum Pet Drops is a unique nutritional supplement designed for furry family members.
  • hempSMART Face is a topical face moisturizer that combines CBD oil with ayurvedic herbs and botanicals.

MCOA’s hempSMART goes through an exacting CO2 extraction process to ensure the highest quality in the company’s natural wellness product line. By combining these pure industrial hemp-based cannabinoids with some of nature’s most effective wellness ingredients, MCOA’s hempSMART products are poised to deliver optimally formulated wellness products to health-conscious consumers.

In a forward-thinking plan to expand retail distribution and capitalize on impulse buys in high-traffic stores, MCOA took a 25 percent equity stake in BeniHemp-branded CBD products. BeniHemp health-focused products include topicals, tinctures and edibles packaged in one-day, two-day and thirty-day supplies widely distributed to convenience stores, smoke shops, gas stations and small retail outlets.

A Growing Portfolio

In addition to the hempSMART and BeniHemp consumer products lines, MCOA continues to strategically assemble synergistic portfolio companies. In a joint venture with sister company Global Hemp Group, MCOA launched a 125-acre industrial hemp cultivation project in northeast New Brunswick, Canada. The project targets the promotion of hemp farming while providing year-round jobs in crop and finished product processing.

Also in conjunction with Global Hemp Group, MCOA is developing Covered Bridge Acres, an innovative high-yielding CBD hemp cultivation project in Oregon. The project utilizes both traditional outdoor cultivation and what will ultimately become more than 19,000 square feet of indoor greenhouses, which are slated to eventually supply the raw oil needed for the hempSMART CBD product line.

MCOA also took a 15 percent equity stake in MoneyTrac Technology, Inc., a subsidiary of Global Payout, Inc. (OTC: GOHE). MCOA made this investment to help establish and market MoneyTrac Technology as an alternative banking solution for the cannabis industry.

Others Vying for Position

Isodiol International, Inc. (CSE: ISOL) (OTC: ISOLF) (FSE: LB6A.F) grows and harvests hemp on an industrial scale then processes it to extract the cannabidiol for distribution. The company commercializes pharmaceutical-grade cannabinoids, micro-encapsulations and nanotechnology for consumable and topical skin care products. Isodiol has announced plans to develop additional over-the-counter and pharmaceutical drugs, expand its phytoceutical portfolio and expand into Latin America, Asia and Europe.

CV Sciences, Inc. (OTCQB: CVSI) operates in two business segments. The company’s drug development division develops and commercializes novel therapeutics utilizing synthetic CBD. Its consumer product division manufactures, markets and sells plant-based CBD products to a range of market sectors. The company is also developing and pursuing FDA approval for drugs with specific indications utilizing cannabidiol as the active pharmaceutical ingredient.

Founded by MCOA CEO Donald Steinberg in 2009, Medical Marijuana, Inc. (OTC: MJNA) was the first U.S.-traded CBD company. The company develops, distributes and sells hemp oil that contains naturally occurring cannabinoids, including CBD. The company sells its hemp-derived CBD products through a variety of distribution subsidiaries. The company was among the first to bring hemp-based CBD oil products to market in the United States and the first to receive federal government import approvals in Mexico, Paraguay and Brazil.

PotNetwork Holdings, Inc. (OTC: POTN) is a publicly traded company that acts as a holding company for its subsidiaries, First Capital Venture Co.; Diamond CBD, Inc.; and Sunrise Auto Mall, Inc. Diamond CBD focuses on the research, development and multinational marketing of hemp extracts that contain a broad range of cannabinoids and natural hemp derivatives. Diamond CBD’s team consists of hemp industry professionals, chemists, doctors and scientists — all working together to produce CBD oils.

Seismic Shift

Modern science has begun to substantiate both the anecdotal history and the therapeutic efficacy of cannabidiol. The FDA’s recent approval of a cannabis-based drug represents a seismic shift and is further indication of the enormous curative potential that may be found in CBD. As more scientific validations ensue, the market for CBD products could easily exceed expectations, and well-positioned companies in the space could outperform the market.

Proposed Legal Changes Offer a Boost for Cannabidiol Companies in the United States

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: Recent growth in the market for cannabidiol (CBD) products has been strong and appears poised to continue.

  • CBD is an active ingredient derived from industrial hemp that does not contain the psychoactive or “high” effect of marijuana.
  • CBD is used in a wide range of products, from cosmetics to pet supplements.
  • The recent acceptance of a CBD-based medicine by U.S. authorities creates potential for legal change that could make the sale of CBD easier.
  • Attention in the mainstream press has created a measure of gravitas for CBD.

Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTC: MCOA) (MCOA Profile) has produced a diverse range of CBD products to promote well-being. Cannabis company Canopy Growth Corp. (NYSE: CGC) has created a range of CBD oils for its customers while expanding its global reach. Aurora Cannabis, Inc. (OTCQX: ACBFF) provides pain relief through a range of cannabis strains and is set to expand its R&D potential through a takeover. Terra Tech Corp. (OTC: TRTC) provides equipment to cultivate cannabis and would benefit from a change in the legal landscape alongside its customers. PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) holds several subsidiary companies benefiting from cannabis and CBD products, thanks to the diversity of the sector.

U.S. Authorities Consider Legal Changes

For decades, federal rules have held back cannabinoid-derived medicines in the United States. Though the majority of states now allow medical marijuana and associated cannabinoid-derived products, national legislation is still grounded in the war on drugs. The cannabis and hemp plants are classified as a Schedule I drug, meaning that it is legally seen as both dangerous and without medical benefits. Even treatments using cannabidiol (CBD), an active ingredient found in hemp and cannabis that is nonpsychoactive, currently fall under this classification.

That may be about to change. Following the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) ground-breaking acceptance of prescription drug Epidiolex, the future of CBD products for medicinal use appears to be up in the air. Meanwhile, legislation from both sides of America’s political divide offers the possibility of bigger changes.

Tackling the Law

Progress on the legal status of CBD is being eagerly watched by companies such as Marijuana Company of America, Inc. (OTC: MCOA). With a focus on industrial hemp and hemp-derived cannabidiol products, MCOA doesn’t produce and sell medical or recreational marijuana. But because hemp products are derived from the same family of plants, they fall under the same stigmas associated with the plant.

Increasingly liberal legislation at the state level has allowed companies such as MCOA to thrive in the United States. But that evidence-based liberalization is in conflict with the federal government’s decades-long prohibition, which some within the current conservative government are looking to reinforce rather than relax.

Despite this, the FDA approved CBD-based Epidiolex in June. Epidiolex has been developed to counter the seizures brought on by two rare ailments. Its approval for sale as a prescription medicine doesn’t mean that similar medications will automatically be approved, but it does open the possibility. In light of the approval, repeated calls have been made for the FDA to look again at the scheduling of certain cannabinoids and the broader picture of cannabis-derived medicines.

At the same time, several pieces of legislation that could change CBD’s status are being considered by Congress. Some of those are actually being proposed by Republicans, making it appear less likely that they will be blocked by America’s more conservative party. It looks increasingly likely that rescheduling or other legislative changes may soon make it easier for companies to cultivate industrial hemp as well as produce and market CBD products.

When such change comes, companies with a wide array of products are likely to be the ones that will benefit most. With a range that already runs from pain treatment to therapies for pet care and memory enhancement, MCOA’s line of products is representative of how versatile the use of CBD can be. A loosening of restrictions would make it easier to both broaden this selection and make it available to a wider market.

CBD Goes Mainstream

The growth of companies such as MCOA is helped by increasing mainstream attention on CBD. Forbes has reported on research into the product by the World Health Organization. Esquire has profiled the rise and diverse uses of this ingredient. The Washington Post has explored the growing popularity of CBD among celebrities, consumers and wellness professionals.

Because CBD doesn’t get a user high, it might seem strange that the marijuana derivative is becoming one of the most popular hemp-derived products. But the wellness market is big business in America as consumers clamor for ways to improve their energy levels and reduce the low-key aches and pains of everyday life. CBD’s reputation for improving health is making it popular among people who want the reported medical benefits without having to deal with the high.

The result is a fast-growing market. Consumer sales of CBD amounted to $262.2 million in the United States in 2016, more than double what they had been only two years before. Based on the market’s ongoing growth, analysts have predicted that the market will hit the billion-dollar mark by 2021.

More than half of CBD consumers take the products every day with anxiety, anti-inflammation and joint pain being the top symptoms the products are designed to impact. Successful treatment of these conditions would likely create a large base of long-term consumers.

The Varied Uses of CBD

This large and growing consumer base is looking to CBD for potential impact on a wide range of wellness concerns. The ability of companies such as MCOA to provide a range of products aimed at these symptoms would allow those companies to tap into a broad share of the market. MCOA’s hempSMART™ products are a great example of how many uses a single company can find for CBD.

HempSMART Brain is a patent-pending nootropic product designed to support natural brain function, which fits with what many consumers expect from CBD because the product is focused on the mind. These innovative capsules can be taken to support alertness and concentration.

HempSMART Pain is designed to provide relief from pain associated with physical activity by combining CBD with botanical supplements. Their hempSMART Pain Cream is designed to provide temporary relief from and soothe sore, aching muscles and joints.

The company most recently launched a new cosmetic product, hempSMART Face, a CBD facial moisturizer that has been designed to refresh, replenish and restore skin cells on the face. And perhaps most surprising is the company’s offering of sublingual CBD tinctures, including hempSMART Full-Spectrum Drops and hempSMART Pet Drops, a bacon-flavored supplement formulated to provide cats and dogs with renewed energy as well as a tasty treat.

Such a diverse range of products could help a company such as MCOA attract the attention of CBD consumers. It might also allow consumers to use CBD in more areas of their lives, expanding the CBD market.

Companies Set to Benefit

It’s not just the variety of CBD products that bodes well for the industry — it’s also the range of companies. If the legal status of cannabis and cannabis-derived products changes, an entire sector is set to benefit.

Canopy Growth Corp. (NYSE: CGC), a leading player in retail cannabis, is using its research in the area to create CBD oils. By balancing the ratio of CBD and THC within its oils, Canopy Growth caters to differing wellness needs. Already a trusted player within the Canadian market, the company has acquired a subsidiary in the Kingdom of Lesotho and established another in Latin America. By looking to the wider world, the company is further expanding the global market for cannabis and CBD products.

One of the leading areas of interest for CBD is in pain relief. Aurora Cannabis, Inc. (OTCQX: ACBFF), one of the largest cannabis companies in the world, has established a strong position in this sector. The company has developed a large range of different strains of medical cannabis that can be used in developing new products as well as in retail. The Canadian Competition Bureau recently approved a takeover of MedReleaf Corp. (TSX: LEAF), a research-oriented company, by Aurora, leaving the company in a stronger position to make the most of the coming changes.

Rescheduling cannabis would benefit not just the companies selling cannabis and CBD products but also those supporting them. Terra Tech Corp. (OTC: TRTC) is a producer of environmentally friendly growing systems for cannabis growers. Its hydroponic systems use moving tables and recycled waste water to increase yields and reduce costs. As it becomes easier to grow and market cannabis, more growers may turn to Terra Tech for the equipment they need.

The maturity of the CBD and cannabis sector has also led to the emergence of several holding companies, including PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN). This company’s subsidiaries include Diamond CBD, First Capital Venture and PotNetwork. Through these entities, PotNetwork benefits from growth across different parts of the industry, as well as supporting other companies in their expansion.

The market for CBD and other cannabis-derived products is already strong. With the prospect of legal rescheduling increasingly likely, these companies seem poised to benefit from changing attitudes in the United States and beyond.

Dangers Lurking in Synthetic CBD Underscore Value of Quality Product

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: Dating back thousands of years, people have found ways to treat pain and other ailments with cannabidiol (CBD) oil which is harvested from the hemp plant. However, the natural healing properties of CBD are being jeopardized by the advent of man-made synthetic CBDs. These chemical analogs are dangerous imitations of plant-derived product, binding to human endocannabinoid receptors at astronomically larger quantities than natural cannabinoids. These designer drugs prompted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a national health alert warning about synthetic cannabinoids. Shunning synthetics, Marijuana Company of America, Inc. (OTC: MCOA) (MCOA Profile) provides consumers complete transparency and delivering only pure, plant-based 100% hemp-derived products through its hempSMART™ brand. While Medical Marijuana, Inc. (OTC: MJNA) and PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) market hemp-derived CBD products, some companies such as Isodiol International, Inc. (CSE: ISOL) (OTC: ISOLF) (FSE: LB6A.F) and CV Sciences, Inc. (OTC: CVSI) utilize extraction techniques to produce isolated cannabinoid compounds for both commercial and/or research uses.

Surging Demand Creates Copy Cats

Hemp-derived CBD grew from a market category that didn’t exist five years ago to generating $190 million in sales in 2017. The U.S. industry is poised to reach $1 billion dollars in 2018, led by hemp-derived CBD, food, personal care and industrial products. Hemp Business Journal estimates the U.S. hemp industry will grow to a $2.6 billion market by 2022 with an estimated five-year CAGR of 25%.

In a recent article, “Fighting fakes: Hemp leaders on the dangers of synthetic CBD,” public health investigators issued warnings when 50 people were sickened after consuming synthetic CBD. What the epidemiologists found was that the products, while labeled CBD, did not contain CBD compounds. Instead, the products contained a synthetically produced cannabinoid.

CBD products are often mislabeled, both in how much CBD the products contain and where the CBD comes from. A study published in JAMA revealed that nearly 70% of online CBD marijuana extracts are mislabeled, some had extra CBD, some less, and some contained hidden CBDs. Blind testing found that only about 31% of the extracts tested contained the amount of CBD listed on the label.

Differentiated from Others

The company’s commitment to quality may differentiate Marijuana Company of America, Inc. (OTC:MCOA) from all others in the sector. MCOA uses the highest-quality sourced raw materials to produce the finest quality botanical supplements and topicals on the market. To ensure quality and transparency, the company’s hempSMART™ product line has been rigorously tested to validate its purity. Products developed by hempSMART are derived and formulated from industrial hemp containing naturally occurring CBD compounds that help support the body’s natural endocannabinoid system. All hempSMART™ products contain tested levels and clinically researched ingredients designed to meet and exceed consumers expectations.

The company is led by cannabis industry pioneer Donald Steinberg, MCOA’s CEO and an experienced veteran of the cannabis and industrial hemp industries. Steinberg founded the first marijuana company ever to trade on a U.S. stock market, and his extensive background and knowledge of the industry may give the company unparalleled insights into the global industrial hemp and cannabis markets.

Celebrated Family of Products

Derived from industrial hemp containing CBD compounds, MCOA’s hempSMART™ product line is among the finest quality of botanical supplements on the market. Scientifically driven, each of MCOA’s hempSMART™ products are created to ensure only the highest quality products reach discerning consumers. MCOA’s hempSMART™ CBD consumer products are researched, developed and sold at www.hempsmart.com.

The company recently re-launched its patent-pending wellness nootropic product hempSMART™ Brain, a “first of its kind” researched formulation for optimal brain function support, with 300mg of full spectrum CBD per bottle. HempSMART products also include full spectrum bioavailable CBD drops in form of a tincture containing a high concentration and potency of CBD, hempSMART ™ Pain capsules with a blend of premium CBD and botanical supplements, and hempSMART ™ Pain Cream with a synergistic combination of natural botanicals and full spectrum hemp extract to treat aching muscles and joints. In addition, the company now provides hempSMART™ Full Spectrum Pet Drops, exclusively designed for fur-bearing family members.

To virally expand sales, MCOA created its own unique hempSMART affiliate network marketing program. The affiliate marketing program provides a generous compensation plan to promote and sell hempSMART’s CBD consumer products in the United States. Advocates of hempSMART’s CBD products make the best ambassadors and the sales model lends itself to rapid global expansion.

Diversified Opportunity

In addition to the research and development of hemp-based consumer products, MCOA is strategically expanding its footprint across multiple facets of the hemp industry, building a portfolio of diversified investments and joint ventures to grow the company and potentially drive shareholder value.

The company recently provided updates on its 125-acre industrial hemp cultivation project in northeast New Brunswick with joint-venture partner Global Hemp Group Inc. (OTC: GBHPF). Planting on the first 77 acres is complete and the remaining 48 acres will be seeded soon. Drying equipment is being evaluated to process the biomass after harvest and management is in discussions with several potential processing partners for the material.

To target impulse buys in high traffic convenience stores, MCOA secured a 25% equity stake in Convenient Hemp Mart, LLC’s BeniHemp branded products. BeniHemp products will include topicals, tinctures, and edibles packaged in one-day, two-day, and 30-day supplies distributed to convenience stores, smoke shops, gas stations and similar small retail businesses.

Each owning 42.5%, MCOA and Global Hemp Group formed a joint venture, Covered Bridge Acres LTD., to develop a high yielding CBD hemp cultivation project in Oregon and committed to jointly invest a total of US$1.2 million into the project. A cornerstone of the project is the acquisition of a 109-acre agricultural property in Scio, Oregon. The property, located 70 miles south of Portland, is situated in the fertile Willamette Valley and has a history of hemp cultivation over the past two years. The farm is ideal for cultivating hemp as it contains a high level of organic matter in the soil and has an established irrigation infrastructure with sufficient water rights.

MCOA successfully raised $1 million in funding for Bougainville Ventures to construct and manage a turnkey state of the art cannabis cultivation and processing facility. The joint venture has completed the setup of 10,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse space and waiting for completion of inspection, the final step before commencing cultivation.

Active Companies Vying for Market Position

CV Sciences (OTCQB: CVSI) operates two business segments: a drug development division focused on developing and commercializing novel therapeutics utilizing naturally occurring CBD; and, a consumer product division focused on manufacturing, marketing and selling plant-based CBD products to a range of market sectors. The company recently announced the June 7, 2018, publication of the toxicology and safety results of an extract from the base raw materials used in its PlusCBD Oil™ consumer products. The study, designed to investigate the safety of oral consumption of the company’s hemp CBD oil and to support a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) Independent Conclusion, concluded that the test article was non-mutagenic, non-clastogenic and non-genotoxic.

Isodiol International (CSE: ISOL) (OTC: ISOLF) (FSE: LB6A.F) is focused on pharmaceutical grade phytochemical compounds and is among industry leaders in the manufacture and development of consumer products. The company pioneered the commercialization of 99%+ pure, pharmaceutical grade cannabinoids, micro-encapsulations, and nanotechnology for consumable and topical skin care products. Isodiol earlier this month entered into a binding agreement to acquire 51% of Round Mountain Technologies, LLC (“RMT”), a cultivator of organic hemp with operations in Nevada.

Medical Marijuana (OTC: MJNA), the first publicly traded cannabis company in the United States (founded by current CEO of Marijuana Company of America Don Steinberg), develops, distribute and sells hemp oil that contains naturally occurring cannabinoids, including CBD and other products containing CBD oil. In recent news, MJNA announced its favor on the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) recent statement on the legality of CBD — which further clarifies that some CBD products, such as hemp-derived CBD products, are legal to distribute throughout the United States and do not fall under the regulations of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Additionally, the company’s HempMeds® subsidiary reported the historic authorization of its Real Scientific Hemp Oil-X™ (RSHO-X™) CBD hemp oil product for import into Argentina.

PotNetwork Holding (OTC: POTN) is a holding company for its subsidiaries, First Capital Venture Co. that owns Diamond CBD, Inc., the maker of Diamond CBD oils. Diamond CBD researches, develops and markets hemp extracts that contain a broad range of cannabinoids and hemp derivatives. The company recently announced that Diamond CBD’s online sales increased 639% higher than the year prior. PotNetwork is in currently preparing to file with the SEC to become a fully reporting company.

With an estimated 25% compound annual growth rate, there’s little doubt the about the trajectory of the CBD market. As the market continues its rapid expansion and more people become aware of the dangers lurking in synthetic CBD, it seems reasonable that evermore consumers will gravitate toward high-quality natural CBD product. Companies like MCOA aim to answer that call.

Diversity Leads to Growth in Flourishing Cannabinoid Industries

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: The cannabis industry is about more than medicine and recreational drugs. Whether selling hemp-derived textile and construction products or providing resources to support cannabis growers, companies are now accessing the market in a variety of ways. Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTC: MCOA) (MCOA Profile) is developing hemp-based wellness products and cultivating industrial hemp on a large scale in Canada and the United States. Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG) is selling hydroponic equipment to legal cannabis growers and has recently made a significant acquisition in this area. Cronos Group, Inc. (TSX: CRON) (NASDAQ: CRON) has used its success to become the first pure play cannabis company traded on Wall Street and in Canada was uplisted to reach the Toronto Stock Exchange. PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) has fostered a range of subsidiaries whose diverse products include cannabinoid wellness products. In addition, companies such as AbbVie, Inc. (NYSE: ABBV), which already has a cannabis-based drug on the market, may be ahead of the game as the industry expands and evolves moving forward.

A Diverse Industry

A lot of attention is currently on the medical and recreational potential of the cannabis industry. The huge sums of money already spent on the life-changing promise of medical marijuana have pushed these areas to center stage. But while they are undoubtedly an important part of the sector, they do not illustrate the whole picture involving industrial hemp’s nationwide come back.

Much of the growth in the hemp industry is in subsidiary services and other uses for the plant’s products. Hemp – a variety of cannabis that does not contain its siblings’ intoxicating potential – is being grown for use in food, fibers and even building materials, all without getting anyone high. Landlords, compost manufacturers and engineering companies are finding ways to support and profit from the changing market. Even research into active ingredients involving cannabinoids is shifting away from THC, the chemical that gets marijuana users high, and toward the potential uses of non-intoxicating cannabidiol (CBD), which can be obtained from hemp.

The result is a varied industry in which companies can flourish through variety instead of focusing on one sphere.

Careful Cultivation

Marijuana Company of America (OTC: MCOA) is making the most of this opportunity. Founded by two veterans of the cannabis industry, MCOA is building a portfolio of partnered companies working across the sector.

One of the company’s important assets is hempSMART™, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MCOA. The hempSMART brand is focused on producing and marketing wellness products including CBD derived from hemp. The hempSMART team makes use of the cannabinoid chemicals to provide a range of products that are useful and appealing to consumers.

Hemp products were worth at least $688 million in 2016 and are expected to be worth $1.8 billion by 2020. Ownership of hempSMART gives MCOA a place in this significant part of the sector, meaning that it is not dependent on federally illegal THC-laden cannabis products to grow and sustain its revenue streams.

As a newly emerging industry, cannabis faces a great deal of uncertainty over sales and income potential. This uncertainty creates investor opportunities as companies outperform expectations. But it also creates risks due to fluctuations in income. A cultivation project in Washington State is providing MCOA with a buffer against these risks.

Created as part of a joint venture with Bougainville Ventures Inc., the cannabis cultivation and processing facility at Oroville, Wash., covers 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art growing space, which will eventually be expanded to 30,000 square feet. Rather than using the site to grow its own products, MCOA is renting out the facility to a growing company, which is expected to begin work there this month. The rent from the facility ensures a stable source of income for MCOA — derived from cannabis cultivation but not prone to its uncertainties. By providing this facility, the company is also supporting the growth of the cannabis sector, creating a market for such properties and for its own related products.

Preparing for the Canadian Market

Making the most of the possibilities offered by cannabis isn’t just about diverse products, it’s also about diverse markets. For any company working in North America, Canada is one of the most important markets currently and MCOA is preparing to enter that market.

Canada is already a significant market for industrial hemp-derived products and medicinal cannabinoids. Legislation due to come into force later this year will legalize the extraction of cannabinoids for all potential uses which will make Canada one of the largest markets for legal cannabinoids in the world.

To make the most of this expected market growth, MCOA recently entered into a joint venture with Global Hemp Group, a Canadian company, to develop high-yield CBD hemp. Working on a 109-acre agricultural property in Scio, Oregon, the companies will use a dual-cultivation strategy with traditional outdoor cultivation alongside the year-round harvesting made possible by greenhouses. Cultivation of plants has already begun, and work has started to construct five new greenhouses to ensure substantial year-round growing capacity.

The project team will be using data collection and analysis to check the performance of growing techniques and to develop hemp rich in CBD. This will help to ensure supplies of high-grade hemp for both companies’ products.

“Our evolving project in Scio, Ore., highlights the quality of the team in place as they continue to lean on their many years of experience cultivating hemp,” said Donald Steinberg, the CEO of Marijuana Company of America. “Activities such as these will help to secure the raw oil that we will need for our hempSMART brand of CBD infused products.”

Meeting Growing Demand

The Oregon facility is coming into play at a perfect time for MCOA. Demand for CBD is high due to the increasing number of manufacturers and products on the market. This is creating a shortage of high-quality CBD.

MCOA’s new farm will provide an ample source of hemp-derived CBD. With its tie-in to the Canadian industry, the company looks to be in a strong position to profit from the shortage in both the American and Canadian markets. MCOA seems to have placed itself as the right business at the right time to make the most of a shifting market.

With its range of facilities and partnerships, MCOA has already developed a broad hemp-related portfolio. By incorporating elements that are protected from market uncertainties alongside ones better positioned to make the most of change, the company may be on track to make the most of changes in the sector.

More Companies Target Cannabis

Plenty of other companies are also building their hopes of tapping into the same markets as MCOA.

A growing interest in growing things means cannabis is creating opportunities for companies already established in the agriculture and gardening sectors. Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG) has agreed to acquire Sunlight Supply, the United States’ leading distributor of hydroponics products, for $450 million in cash and stocks. The company’s largest-ever transaction will double its sales to cannabis growers, turning the lawn and gardening company into an important supplier to the medical and recreational drug sectors. Though hydroponics are used for other specialist plant-growing purposes, legalized cannabis is a critical new part of the market.

The increasing importance of the cannabis industry was heralded when Cronos Group, Inc. (TSX: CRON) (NASDAQ: CRON) became the first pure-play cannabis company traded on Wall Street. A major grower and seller of cannabis products, the Canadian company is set to profit from the growth of the industry in its native country. In a further sign of its healthy prospects, its shares in Canada were recently upgraded from the Toronto Venture Exchange to the Toronto Stock Exchange. Like MCOA, it is working across North America thanks to a cross-border venture with Los Angeles-based MedMen.

Others are using a similar model to MCOA, investing in a range of cannabis companies. PotNetwork Holding, Inc. (OTC: POTN) has developed a range of subsidiaries that contribute to an increasingly diverse industry. Its Diamond CBD, Inc. subsidiary is reaching into the $110 billion global pet care industry by creating CBD-based wellness products for pets.

Finally, traditional pharma AbbVie, Inc. (NYSE: ABBV) seems to be positioning itself in the industry so it can take advantage of potential future growth and opportunities. The company already has a cannabis-based drug on the U.S. market. FDA-approved Marinol helps alleviate nausea or vomiting for chemotherapy patients, as well as helping AIDS patients who have lost their desire to eat.

From hydroponics to pet health and beyond, hemp-based cannabinoids are reaching into all corners of the economy and returning corporate profits.

Recent Report on PotNetwork Holding Inc. (POTN) Share Price Target Highlights Encouraging Data

  • Heightened share price target for PotNetwork Holding Inc. set at $1.25
  • Previous market estimates, exceeded by over 70 percent, show positive month-to-month sales for PotNetwork Holdings Inc.
  • SeeThruEquity report highlights the greatly lowered legal and physiological risk from hemp-derived CBD

A recent comprehensive report by SeeThruEquity highlighting PotNetwork Holding Inc. (OTC: POTN) and its subsidiary, Diamond CBD, projected a heightened share price target set at $1.25. The increase was attributed to the company’s strong monthly sales data and 3Q17 filings (http://cnw.fm/A2krk). Per the report, these indicated “continued profitability as the company invests in growth.”

In a prior news release, Dr. Richard Goulding, CEO of PotNetwork Holding Inc., stated, “It is very rewarding to experience this type of growth and success, and all the more pleasing to see an acknowledgement of our collective efforts in the marketplace.”  This statement followed news that the company’s previously announced estimates of $8.3 million were exceeded by over 70 percent, reaching $14.5 million due to rapid month-to-month growth in sales (http://cnw.fm/Rt1p8).

SeeThruEquity’s report highlighted that hemp derived from CBD can provide a legal alternative to marijuana-based CBD, which is banned by federal law. This allows consumers to make use of CBD products without the risk of experiencing a ‘high’ or infringing on government law. The projected market for hemp-derived CBD is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 53 percent through 2020, positioning it among the fastest-growing segments within the multi-billion dollar legal cannabis and hemp market.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the most researched derivatives of cannabis, a psychoactive drug also known as marijuana (http://cnw.fm/u83jV).  The traditional ‘high’ associated with this drug is largely thanks to the presence of THC, and, while CBD is a structural isomer of THC (meaning that it has the same chemical composition), the atomic structure is arranged differently, offering many of the same health benefits without the psychoactive effects of THC. Based on numerous studies, CBD has demonstrated the capacity to produce a number of effects on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), including boosting immune system function, reducing sensations of pain, playing a role in inflammatory response and altering appetite, mood, memory and energy levels.

With the advancement of technology and ongoing research of the medicinal qualities of CBD, it is possible that these products could, potentially, serve as substitutes for harmful medications that are currently on the market.  The natural healing properties are being assessed on a global level, and several journals have already noted the economic impact of CBD in general. Matt Karnes of Greenwave Advisors, in an interview with Forbes, stated, “In terms of the CBD market size, I estimate an almost $3 billion market by 2021. Right now, there are 15 states that allow CBD only — this is in addition to the 28 states plus DC that have legalized medical marijuana.”

Numerous studies on the positive effects of cannabinoids and THC have paved the way for legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes in Canada and the U.S.  A focus report by Mackie Research Capital Corp. (http://cnw.fm/Dgh2g) notes that (based on internal models) the Canadian marijuana market is expected to increase in size quickly, with the forecast peak in market size to exceed C$2.5 billion by 2020. With the United States presenting various states in which medicinal marijuana is legal, the market size for these states (most notably Colorado, Arizona, Oregon and Michigan) is projected to record a significant increase in growth from 2015 to 2020. For the above-mentioned states, the Colorado market is expected to reach more than $1.5 billion, Arizona is expected to exceed $453 million, Oregon could increase to $330 million and Michigan is expected to rise to $556 million, all by 2020.

PotNetwork Holding Inc. is a publicly traded company that acts as a holding company for a number of subsidiaries, namely First Capital Venture Co., PotNetwork.com, and Diamond CBD, Inc.  The latter focuses on research, development and multinational marketing of hemp extracts containing a wide variety of cannabinoids and natural hemp derivatives.  Diamond CBD’s team of hemp industry pioneers, chemists, doctors, scientists and natural product experts aims to produce high-grade CBD oil, providing a variety of CBD oils, tinctures, edibles and vape liquids.

In a previous news release (http://cnw.fm/6q5VV), Goulding added, “[W]e are proud, and think our shareholders should be too, that on December 13, 2017 PotNetwork Holding was named by Huffington Post, a prominent major national news source, as “One of Five Notable CBD Revolution Industry Leaders’, an accolade that pays tribute to the company’s achievements and future prospects.”

Goulding further noted, “2017 has been a phenomenally successful year for us! Our unprecedented sales growth pays tribute to the hard work of our staff and our resellers, and the exceptional quality of our CBD product line which expanded greatly over 2017.” He also emphasized that the company is poised for growth during 2018 and it embarks on new and unique marketing initiatives and embraces new opportunities.

Without question, the recent report by SeeThruEquity highlighting PotNetwork Holding Inc. and Diamond CBD projects not only an increased share price target, but also a positive expansion of the company within this multi-billion dollar arena.  With an ever-increasing demand for safer products of this nature that abide by all governing regulations, PotNetwork Holding Inc., also with its subsidiaries, has its foot in the door of tomorrow’s market.

For more information, visit the company’s website at www.PotNetworkHolding.com

Pursuant to the applicable federal law, the sale or distribution of CBD with less than 0.03% of tetrahydrocannabinol by retailers may be permissible in all states.  However, the local, state and federal laws regarding these issues tend to remain in flux and should be accordingly reviewed by local counsel and, as such, legal advice is not intended, but specifically disclaimed.
