420 with CNW — Marijuana Cuts Migraine Pain, Headache by Almost Half, New Study Finds

A lot of people who have used cannabis regularly report that it has pain-relieving effects. But since cannabis has been illegal and intensely policed for such a long time, researchers have barely been able to conduct any research into its alleged health benefits. However, with more than 30 states legalizing cannabis in some form, the controversial drug is finally coming out from under the yoke of prohibition, and this has allowed scientists to take at a closer look at its medical capabilities.

A recent study, which was published in the “Journal of Pain” has confirmed what many cannabis users have known for years: marijuana has the ability to effectively manage pain. Specifically, researchers from Washington State University found that cannabis can reduce migraine and headache pain by half. On top of that, it does so without causing “overuse headaches,” which is when pharmaceutical painkillers actually worsen the patients’ headaches over time with continued use.

Led by Carrie Cuttler, an assistant professor of psychology at Washington State University, the researchers studied “big data” provided by the Strainprint app, which captured data from patients about their symptoms before and after using medical cannabis. More than 1,300 patients suffering from headaches submitted their information in real time, using the application over 12,200 times. Additionally, 650 patients with migraines also tracked changes in the severity of their conditions, using the app more than 7,400 times.

The inhaled medical marijuana, which the patients sourced from producers and distributors in Canada, reduced the migraine severity by 49.6% and headache severity by 47.3%. According to Cuttler, she and her team approached the study in an “ecological way,” looking at actual medical marijuana patients who used whole-plant cannabis to address headaches and migraines in their own homes and environments. Since the archival data provided by the Strainprint app was so immense, it allowed them the researchers to make accurate generalizations to estimate how most patients who used medical cannabis to address headaches and migraines fared.

Although they found no evidence that cannabis led to overuse headaches, which are often caused by regular use of pharmaceutical painkillers, the researchers did notice that the patients used larger doses of cannabis over time. This may be an indication that they developed a tolerance to cannabis the longer they used it and required larger doses to achieve the same effect. They also found that 90% of men reported more sessions to reduce their pain compared to 89.1% of women.

Cannabis concentrates such as cannabis oil were more effective in terms of reducing the severity of headaches and migraines compared to cannabis flower. Surprisingly, the data also indicated that the levels of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), whether higher or lower, did not have a significant impact on pain reduction. As such, it seems that the other less-studied cannabinoids (cannabis produces more than 100 cannabinoids), as well as terpenes and other compounds, may work together and cause a positive effect on marijuana’s pain-relieving capabilities.

However, Cuttler acknowledges the WSU study had several limitations, including the fact that it used data from a self-selected group of patients and had no placebo control group, and that more research is needed. Still, the study is a step in the right direction.

As more studies uncover the therapeutic uses of different cannabis compounds, the extracts and concentrates manufactured by companies such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF) are likely to find their way into many novel products as people look for additional ways to get their dose of medical cannabis.

420 with CNW — Canadian Firms Hope the US Eases Marijuana Restrictions

After decades of prohibition and intense policing, the American states are finally loosening restrictions against cannabis. So far, 36 states allow medical marijuana, 16 states have legalized recreational medical cannabis, and several more states are considering whether or not to pass cannabis legislation. The state-legal cannabis sector has been insanely profitable so far, earning billions of dollars in revenue and providing states with plenty of tax revenue, even amid the coronavirus pandemic, while other industries faltered.

Consequently, cannabis firms from the Great White North have been eyeing the U.S. market, waiting for the government to pass federal decriminalization laws before swooping in to for a piece of the cake. With President Joseph Biden in the White House and Capitol Hill currently in the Democrats’ control, there has never been a more ideal time for cannabis to come out from under the shackles of federal prohibition. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has held the Biden administration’s attention for nearly one and a half years, and with the 2022 midterms approaching, there is a risk the Democrats may lose their tenuous hold on Capitol Hill.

David Culver, vice president of global government relations for Canadian cannabis firm Canopy Growth Corp., says these legislative changes will need to happen soon before Biden’s potentially narrow legislative window closes. Although Biden has said he supports medical marijuana, decriminalizing cannabis, and updating the Department of Justice’s classification of cannabis to allow cannabis research, he doesn’t support recreational cannabis. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer supports legalizing adult-use cannabis, and he is currently working on a federal cannabis legalization bill with Senators Ron Wyden and Cory Booker.

At the moment, marijuana’s status as a Schedule I controlled substance makes it extremely difficult for even local cannabis companies to operate. But with the U.S. cannabis market projected to bring in $40 billion yearly, Canadian entities hope the United States eases restrictions, especially since the Canadian market hasn’t been as lucrative as anticipated.

In 2019, Canopy Growth had an acquisition deal with New York-based Acreage Holdings, which was amended last year and is contingent on a major “triggering event,”  referring to changes to U.S. federal cannabis laws. According to Canopy Growth CEO David Klein, the U.S. is going to be a core market for the Canadian company.

Aphria Inc. acquired Atlanta-based craft beer vendor SweetWater Brewing Co. last November, and CEO Irwin Simon also believes the U.S. will be a major source of revenue for the Canadian company. But while the coronavirus pandemic rages on, Culver says the government will likely focus its efforts on the pandemic and turn its attention to cannabis in the fall.

Needless to say, other companies that already have a firm foothold in Canada, such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF), would relish the opportunity to enter the U.S. market and make their mark there as well.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Extracts: The New Focus of the Marijuana Industry

As the global marijuana industry continues growing, major businesses are partnering with companies in the industry, conducting research and exploring marijuana in an attempt to develop new product lines for the medical and recreational segments of the industry.

In addition, regulatory changes are being made through supportive federal legislative action in the marijuana space allowing marijuana extraction companies to grab innovative economic investment opportunities as well as develop a new generation of edibles.

Estimates show that by 2026, the global marijuana industry will reach $97 billion, with a compounded annual growth rate of roughly 32% in that period. However, while marijuana and its byproducts are utilized in various medical and recreational capacities, preliminary sector growth has shown that more profits will be made via products that need specialized techniques and additional processing to manufacture, such as beverages, oils and edibles.

This explains why a number of companies are focused on marijuana extracts and the production of new edible products.

So, what are marijuana extracts?

Marijuana extracts refer to different products that contain higher levels of CBD and THC than are commonly found in the marijuana plant. The CBD and THC levels of marijuana extracts can vary significantly, with some extracts hitting 99% high CBD or THC.

CBD, or cannabidiol in full, is a popular cannabinoid that is commonly seen as a therapeutic solution for mental issues and pain, among other problems. The anecdotal evidence notwithstanding, more research is required to confirm the nonintoxicating cannabinoid’s possible medical uses and benefits.

On the other hand, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC for short, is a cannabinoid that induces a high and offers its users an intoxicating and euphoric experience.

So, how will extracts benefit the marijuana industry?

A BDS Analytics and ArcView Market Research report released in 2018 forecasted that the marijuana edibles market in North America would be more than $4 billion by 2022, noting that drink and food products made up nearly 12% of total marijuana spending in 2017, in both the United States and Canada.

This information has prompted many extraction companies to diversify their avenues of revenue and portfolio of services to enhance their value. Other companies have developed more vertically integrated business models to grow their autonomy in the marijuana market as well as manage their exposure in the growing space.

Formulation engineering and technological advancement has created progressive tools to alter marijuana at the molecular level for greater bioavailability, which will enable extraction providers and manufacturers of edibles to boost consumer trust.

Some companies, such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF), have already established themselves in the cannabis extracts niche, and they are well ahead of any others that are looking to join this promising segment.

420 with CNW — 4 Powerful Lessons Marijuana Extractors Learned During the Pandemic

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the hemp and marijuana industries took a huge hit because they relied on overseas sources, particularly China, for everything ranging from processing equipment to cartridges and even carrier oils. If marijuana processors were to stay in business, they needed to change things fast. We discuss below some of the key lessons that extractors learned as the pandemic raged on.

Diversifying Supply Sources

Clear Cannabis, a Denver-based manufacturer of CBD and THC concentrates, saw its supply chains disrupted in a major way. The board chair, Richard Batenburg, explains that they had to take a hard look at every aspect of their supply chains and then look for options to plug any gaps observed. He adds that they diversified their suppliers to such an extent that where they initially had four suppliers, they bumped them up to sixteen.

This approach to diversifying supply sources has helped extractors to maintain robust supply chains amidst the uncertainties brought by the pandemic.

Streamlining Processes

Another vital lesson was the importance of streamlining processes in order to shed any avoidable step or procedure. By looking for ways to streamline their processes, extractors were able to find opportunities to implement automation in addition to saving time. Streamlining processes can also reduce personnel demand.

For instance, Clear Cannabis opted to merge the operations of the design team with those of the packaging team so that less time was spent waiting for designs and then proofreading them before they are approved.

Overhauling Delivery Systems

Marijuana extractors quickly realized that their headaches didn’t end with sourcing inputs. Instead, a whole new dilemma presented itself in the form of how to deliver finished products to clients. For instance, products would remain stuck at shipping hubs for much longer than was expected and clients would repeatedly call asking about their shipments.

To deal with this problem, extractors learned to switch from standard shipping to priority shipping. While this added costs, it ensured that products were delivered on time.

Putting Employees First

Concerns about employee safety also made cannabis extraction firms to make changes and intensify their focus on putting employees first. For some, this translated into abandoning the top-down management system to one in which power was delegated downwards and small teams worked almost independently.

Oregrown, an Oregon-based extraction firm, says that they started having what they called “management councils” entailing holding separate meetings with various divisions of the firm. The surprising result of making this switch was that teams became more productive since they didn’t always have to wait for “orders from above.”

Not surprisingly, many of these adaptations are likely to last long after the pandemic is gone since they have changed operations for the better.

Having lived through the worst of the pandemic, industry players like Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF) are certainly better placed to navigate future crises if they ever occur.

420 with CNW — Study to Survey Health-Care Workers, Obtain Input on Medical Marijuana

A study that will involve acquiring input on healthcare workers’ experience with medical marijuana and advice on the same was recently announced. The study, which will involve experts from the University of Massachusetts’ Dartmouth Charlton College of Business, Medicinal Genomics and the Cannabis Center of Excellence Inc. (“CCOE”) will focus on health-care workers in both Canada and the United States.

The study will gather information on the experiences of health-care providers with medical marijuana in their practices and the interest they may have in future clinical education associated with medical marijuana.

Cannabis Center of Excellence Inc. president Dr. Marion McNabb highlighted that approaches to incorporate medical marijuana use, along with knowledge of the risks and benefits of medical marijuana and the endocannabinoid system’s basics weren’t part of the regular curriculum for the majority of the health professionals. This includes those in emergency medicine, addiction and recovery, public health, dental, nursing and medical.

As more evidence on the effectiveness of marijuana is unearthed, the study’s objective is to hear from health-care providers on how the use of marijuana can be incorporated into their practices. In addition to this, the study will also focus on what health-care providers want to know about medical marijuana and what they do know.

study that was published in 2019 discovered that more than 58% of health-care providers were of the opinion that medical marijuana was a legitimate medical therapy. The authors of the study noted that for provider concerns to be addressed, accurate information on the potential for drug interactions needed to be spread.

separate study noted that standardized education would make sure that health-care providers were prepared to promote the responsible use of marijuana if it had been indicated for medically appropriate conditions and symptoms.

Despite the advances made though, more is still required. Earlier in April, a study conducted in Israel found that Israeli medical students felt unprepared despite the fact that they were more supportive of the use of medical marijuana to manage pain, in comparison with their counterparts in Thailand.

The CCOE also revealed that the study, which is backed by the Super Critical Labs, has been approved for human research by the Dartmouth Institutional Review Board. It also noted that the anonymous survey, which would be available from May 2021 to May 2022, would take roughly 12 minutes for health-care providers to complete.

McNabb, who is the chief investigator, will be joined by 15 other researchers, including veterans, clinicians and other scientists. The body expects that initial study results will be available by October 2021.

As a growing amount of more marijuana research is done by independent entities, the products made by sector players such as Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) (OTC: PRXTF) are likely to gain more acceptance from the medical community since the products will be better understood by that segment.
