420 with CNW — SAFE Banking Act Sponsor Vows to See Bill Passed Before He Retires

Operating in the legal cannabis space is no mean feat. Due to the plant’s federal status as a controlled substance, marijuana businesses have to deal with a lot of issues that players in other industries don’t even have to think of. For starters, most banks refuse to work with marijuana businesses in fear of federal reprisals, forcing the businesses to operate on a largely cash-only basis. This makes accounting and filing taxes extremely cumbersome and makes the business prime targets for criminals.

For quite a while, industry stakeholders have argued for some kind of policy or regulation that would allow these companies access banking services. The only lawmaker who heeded the call was Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who introduced the Secure and Fair Enforcement (“SAFE”) Banking Act to the House of Representatives in March 2019. The legislation would prohibit federal banking regulators from penalizing banks that provided financial services to legal cannabis businesses. Despite the potential benefits it could provide to the industry, the SAFE Banking Act did not gain the traction it needed to advance.

While the House has approved some form of the SAFE Banking Act, it failed to advance past the Senate in any form even when the Democrats had majority votes. Perlmutter, who recently announced that he would be retiring from Congress come next election, says this has left him “pretty irritated.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has consistently stood in the way of his bipartisan legislation. Schumer has been working on a federal legalization bill with federal lawmakers for some time now, and he does not want banking legislation before comprehensive cannabis reform is enacted.

With Perlmutter now in his final days as a lawmaker, he says he will use his remaining time to push the SAFE Banking Act and see get it approved. He “absolutely” believes that if the bill lands on President Joe Biden’s desk, the president will sign it into law. Forty-seven states now have some kind of marijuana market, he says, and this greatly underscores the need for “legitimate banking services.” So although he’s a frustrated with the SAFE Banking Act’s lack of progress, Perlmutter believes that the bill’s passage is a “no brainer.”

He plans on playing a major role in helping to establish cannabis banking and hopes legislators will be able to get the bill through the senate and onto the president’s desk by the end of the year. If this law were to be enacted, cannabis sector players such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) would have one less regulatory hurdle to face in their bid to expand their operations and address the needs of more consumers.

420 with CNW — Study Finds That Hemp Compounds Could Block Coronavirus Infection

New research carried out by researchers at the Oregon State University and the Oregon Health and Science University has discovered that some hemp compounds may be able to prevent SARS-CoV-2 from entering cells in the human body. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes the coronavirus infection. The study’s findings were reported in the “Journal of Natural Products.”

Hemp is a strain of the marijuana plant that has been grown for use in various commercial applications. The plant has very small amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is one of the two primary compounds found in cannabis, the other being CBD. Unlike THC, which is a psychoactive that usually induces a high, CBD (cannabidiol) doesn’t possess psychoactive properties. Studies have shown that CBD can help manage depression, anxiety and even seizures.

The researchers discovered that cannabidiolic acid and cannabigerolic acid, which are both compounds found in hemp, can bind to the spike protein that SARS-CoV-2 uses to enter the body, which will help block the virus from infecting individuals. For their study, the researchers conducted an analysis using a mass septectomy-based screening method. Their analysis included different plant-derived compounds that are used as dietary supplements, including licorice, hops, wild yam and red clover. The researchers ranked the compounds based on their affinity to bind with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which led to the discovery of the pair of compounds.

In a statement, Richard van Breemen, the study’s lead researcher, explained that the compounds were abundant in various hemp extracts as well as in the hemp plant, adding that the compounds had a good safety profile in humans, unlike THC, which is a controlled substance. Van Breemen added that the compounds were precursors to hemp-derived substances such as CBG (cannabigerol) and CBD, which are well-known, noting that despite this, the substances weren’t found in many hemp products. The researcher maintained that more studies were needed to discover the right dosage for human consumption of these compounds.

In their report, the researchers highlight that smoking marijuana doesn’t provide any protection from the virus that causes the coronavirus. They explain that the benefit for preventing the infection of cells needs to be derived from cannabinoid acids, which should not be smoked because they are heat sensitive and would be turned into CBD.

A press release from the institution revealed that the research also looked into the effectiveness of these compounds against the alpha, beta and original strains of SARS-CoV-2. However, more recent variants of the coronavirus, such as omicron and delta, weren’t included.

It is exciting to know that so much more about the therapeutic potential of the cannabis products made by established companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) is still being discovered and documented. It could take many more years before this versatile plant is fully understood.

420 with CNW — Illinois Breaks Yet Another Cannabis Sales Record in December

All things considered, 2021 was a pretty good year for cannabis. Unlike most sectors, the state-legal cannabis industry didn’t take much of a beating from the coronavirus pandemic, and when 2021 came to a close, cannabis businesses across the country were doing relatively well. So while businesses in other industries were struggling to recover from the crippling effects of the pandemic, marijuana sellers were making bank. For Illinois, 2021 was probably the best year the state’s cannabis industry had ever seen.

Cannabis sellers in Illinois sold cannabis worth a whopping $137.9 million in December 2021, breaking yet another monthly sales record. December was the market’s best-selling month, with the state’s cannabis industry breaking the monthly record of $127.8 million in sales that was set in July. Furthermore, says the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, marijuana sales in Illinois doubled over the course of the year from $669 million in 2020 to a whopping $1.4 billion in 2021.

Illinois residents made up the majority of the cannabis market, buying $943 million worth of cannabis products while out-of-state visitors purchased marijuana products worth more than $436 million. The year was also quite lucrative for the taxman. Since taxes on legal sales can be up to 40% of the price, the state was able to collect $387 million worth of taxes from cannabis sales. More than one-third of the tax funds were earmarked for the state general revenue fund, with 10% going to unpaid bills, 8% going to law enforcement and 2% going to public safety campaigns.

The Restore, Reinvent and Renew program diverted almost a quarter of every marijuana dollar to social equity programs targeting communities that had been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs. The funds were used to provide these communities with crucial services such as youth development, legal aid, financial support and community reentry. In December 2021, state officials announced that the state would provide $45 million in grants to communities that were harmed most by the decades-long drug war.

To identify such communities and determine their social equity eligibility, officials examined community-level data on child poverty, unemployment, gun injury and state prison commitments. Speaking at a press conference in December 2021, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said that it was time to address the damage caused by the failed war on drugs. He said that what set Illinois apart from other states was its commitment to reinvesting in these impacted communities now that cannabis is legal. Earlier last year, the Restore, Reinvent and Renew program distributed $31.5 million in social equity grants to 80 organizations.

This boom in marijuana sales may suggest that cannabis sector players in that market such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) may have cracked the code of what the consumers in that market need, hence the record sales.

420 with CNW — Study Explores Why Individuals Use Marijuana During Pregnancy or While Lactating

A new study has found that people who use marijuana during lactation or pregnancy use it to manage pre-existing conditions such as insomnia and mental health conditions, as well as pregnancy-related symptoms, including nausea and vomiting.

Dr. Meredith Vanstone, one of the authors of the study, stated that their findings didn’t resonate as much with evidence on motives for marijuana use that have been identified in nonpregnant populations, which proposed that reasons for the herb’s use during lactation and pregnancy were unique.

Vanstone explained that the reasons for the herb’s use that had been provided by the study’s participants closely resembled those cited in research on the use of medical marijuana, noting that most participants used the herb to manage more than one symptom. These reasons included to manage nausea or boost appetite, for sleep, and to control muscle spasms and pain as well as manage depression and anxiety.

For their study, the researchers recruited 52 individuals from Canada, one of whom identified as nonbinary. Each individual who was recruited had used marijuana prior to their pregnancy. At the time of their interviews, 22 of them were breastfeeding while the remaining were pregnant. Every individual was asked to give reasons why they used cannabis, with researchers finding that these reasons changed when some became pregnant. For instance, some stopped using cannabis due to health reasons, guilt and social stigma while others stopped out of fear of harming the fetus.

Those who continued to use cannabis after finding out that they were pregnant discussed their motive as associated with managing symptoms of conditions that existed prior to the pregnancy, as well as pregnancy symptoms. The researchers found that after giving birth, the reasons some participants gave for using marijuana changed again to closely resemble the motives they gave for using the herb before they became pregnant.

The study’s findings have implications for clinical practice, which include counselling of lactating and pregnant individuals on the possible harms of using marijuana and alternative approaches. In the conclusion, Vanstone noted that it was important for doctors to understand that individuals who use marijuana during pregnancy often did so because they recognized the benefits of marijuana for controlling various symptoms. Vanstone highlighted that there existed an opportunity to help pregnant individuals find alternatives that were safe for both the mother and the child, while looking into the benefits that these individuals derived from marijuana.

The study’s findings were reported in the “Canadian Medical Association Journal.”

As more information becomes available regarding the reasons why various categories of people consume the marijuana products made by companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), policymakers will be in a better position to enact laws that are relevant to the present and future generations.

420 with CNW — Five Benefits of Cannabis, According to CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent for CNN, has been exploring the effects of smoking cannabis for a couple of years now. He believes that cannabis provides considerable medical benefits. His most recent report, which focused on the use of cannabis to help relieve pain and symptoms of various health conditions, discusses his thoughts on the matter.

During his quest to learn more about marijuana’s benefits, Gupta discovered a study conducted in Israel by a world renowned scientist, Raphael Mechoulam. The study centered on the use of cannabis as a treatment for refractory seizures in children. While additional studies are needed to learn more about the mechanisms behind how cannabis works, the researcher observed a reduction in seizures, especially in children who didn’t respond to existing seizure medication.

Mechoulam believes that major advances in the treatment and medical-scientific aspects of epilepsy with the help of cannabinoids such as CBD will soon be realized. This comes after the U.S. FDA approved an oral CBD solution known as Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures linked to Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which are both epilepsy syndromes. CBD has exhibited anti-epileptic actions and acts as an anticonvulsant as well as an antioxidant and neuroprotective. This means that even if an individual experiences a seizure, the compound offers protection against the electrical storm devastating the brain.

In his report, Gupta highlighted that some families had also turned to marijuana to help relieve the symptoms of autism, noting that the herb was an answer for many individuals. Research supports this, with findings from various studies showing that medical cannabis extracts appeared to manage the symptoms of kids suffering from autism.

Autism spectrum disorder, or autism in short, is a broad range of conditions characterized by repetitive behaviors and challenges with social skills. For instance, an Israeli clinical trial found that cannabis extracts improve the social responsiveness of children with autism and reduced their disruptive behavior.

Researchers advise that parents of children with autism wait for more data on the safety and effectiveness of cannabis in managing autism before they try treating their children with medical cannabis. This is because children treated with cannabis may sometimes suffer from disturbed sleep, sleepiness and reduced appetite.

Gupta also found that doctors in Israel had prescribed medical cannabis to more than 20,000 patients suffering from post-traumatic stress, epilepsy, cancer and degenerative ailments to help manage their symptoms. These findings make a strong case for the scientific community taking a closer look at what more the cannabis products manufactured by licensed companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) could offer in terms of possible benefits to the consumers.

420 with CNW — Study Finds Smoking CBD-Rich Cannabis Doesn’t Impact Driving Ability

Over the past couple of years, cannabis has experienced a surge in popularity partly due to its purported medical abilities. As territories around the world started legalizing cannabis and hemp, reports of the controversial plant’s medical efficacy spread far and wide. Cannabidiol, one of the chemical compounds produced by plants in the cannabis family, has attracted most of this attention thanks to its potent medical properties. Unlike THC, the main psychoactive agent in marijuana, CBD does not intoxicate users or slow their mental and physical reactions.

A pilot study from Switzerland sought to find out whether there was a connection between smoking CBD-rich marijuana and reduced driving ability. The study found that there was “no significant impact” on the driving ability of its participants. Furthermore, there were no negative effects on vital signs, even though all the study participants had more THC in their blood than the legal limit allowed. This corroborates what we already know about CBD: it is not psychoactive, and it may reduce THC’s ability to intoxicate users.

The Swiss study comprised 33 participants who were each given a joint with 500 mg of tobacco and either 500 mg of placebo or 500 mg of CBD-rich cannabis. The placebo contained a cannabinoid-free, nicotine-free herbal mixture with a hemp aroma called Knaster Hemp while the CBD-rich marijuana contained 15.5% CBD and 0.9% THC.

After taking either the placebo or CBD-rich cannabis, the participants were taken through a variety of common DUI tests. Researchers concluded that there was no correlation between smoking CBD-rich cannabis flower and reduced driving ability, with study participants who smoked both CBD and the placebo experiencing zero decline in motor time, reaction time, concentration, performance or behavior under stress.

Some of the tests the researchers employed include psychological assessments such as reaction tests, a determination assessment that analyzed participants’ reactions under complex stimulus as well as a Cognitrone test. While there were no significant differences in reaction time after the participants smoked both CBD-rich cannabis and the placebo, there was a difference in reaction and motor time between the men and women regardless of whatever they consumed. However, there was no difference between the male and female participants in the determination test.

Researchers from the University of Bern’s Institute of Forensic Medicine say that although all study participants had enough THC in their blood to cause the symptoms of impairment, they did not exhibit any symptoms. They believe this is the first-ever study to investigate the potential ramifications of smoking cannabidiol-rich marijuana on road safety.

This study proves that consuming CBD-rich cannabis products from licensed marijuana companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) is unlikely to put drivers at risk, but caution is still required as a lot more isn’t yet fully understood about how various cannabis compounds affect one’s ability to drive safely.

420 with CNW — How Marijuana Firms Can Save on Product Packaging

The cannabis industry is one of the hottest sectors right now. Dubbed one of the fastest-growing industries in the country, cannabis has generated billions of dollars in sales in just a few short years and created hundreds of thousands of job opportunities. But thanks to the controversial nature of the plant, companies face restrictions that make navigating the business landscape difficult. Packaging, for instance, can be quite tricky as some jurisdictions have placed stringent packaging requirements on cannabis products.

Keeping product packaging costs low may require some creative thinking, but it isn’t impossible. MJBizDaily talked to a number of hemp and marijuana stakeholders about how they saved money on packaging, and they provided a treasure trove of information. Eric Leslie, the co-owner and chief marketing officer of Cheeba Chews in Boulder, Colorado, first cautions against going too cheap. It’s not always the most cost-effective tactic because going for cheap package providers may result in random defective units, print errors and inconsistent-looking packages.

Leslie says that even if you do land a cheap contract with a packaging provider, make sure you always have a backup option. Some suppliers will give you low-ball estimates to attract you then steadily raise the price on future orders. Having a competing bid from another supplier can keep the prices in check.

Shannon Reed, the chief marketing officer of Santa Monica, California-based Omura, says that you should opt for smaller, lightweight packaging. This will reduce storage space, shipping costs, and package production time, as well as being less wasteful.

Additionally, using a limited number of colors and print methods will reduce the overall amount of work needed to manufacture the packaging. Jonathan Persofsky, the cofounder and CEO of Toronto-based Green Gruff, concurs, saying that you should avoid excessive packaging as customers are becoming more conscious of their carbon footprints and are less likely to opt for wasteful products. Reed also talks about choosing the correct base material for your packaging; unsuitable paper may require extra interventions and additional tertiary packaging in the future.

Samip Shah, chief operating officer at C3 Industries in Detroit, says the quality and construction of the packaging material should be a top consideration. You want to protect the products inside from as much damage as possible, he notes. Keep it simple too, he adds.

Trent Woloveck, chief commercial director at Florida-based Jushi Holdings, is of the same opinion, stating that you should go for simple, attractive packaging. Flashy and colorful packages are both expensive and environmentally wasteful, he says. Your packaging of choice should be durable and look attractive to capture customers’ attention.

At the end of the day, he says, customers simply want an effective and high-quality product that’s affordable. If you saddle them with additional costs due to flashy, wasteful and expensive packaging, they will find another product that’s affordable and has a reduced environmental impact.

Such wasteful packaging may be hard to find among companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), which are constantly looking out for additional ways to optimize every aspect of their operations.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) Focused on Florida Ahead of ‘Massive Medical Marijuana Boom’

Red White & Bloom Brands (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF), a multistate cannabis sector operator, is off to a strong start in building its high-quality flower resource for product inventory at dispensaries throughout Florida. The company has been working to launch growing operations at its Apopka, Florida-based cultivation location, adding 19,200 square feet of production expected to deliver $30 million in annual revenues. The pods were approved by the state health department’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (“OMMU”) with licensing granted just before Halloween, with five already in use for plant growth at that time with the remainder fast-tracked for output. According to a recent article, “Red White & Bloom is focused on Florida ahead of a ‘massive medical marijuana boom’ expected to sweep the state as prohibitionist policies recede (https://cnw.fm/dZ7My).” “We have nurtured our strains to produce high quality flower in the Florida climate while producing high yields, industry-leading THC percentages and superior terpene content,” said Jim Frazier, the general manager of Red White & Bloom’s Florida cultivation subsidiary. “The grow pods provide us with speed to market capabilities which are needed for RWBFL to meet and exceed expectations for generating profitable revenue early in 2022.”
