420 with CNW – COVID-19 Crisis Triggers Changes in Marijuana Consumer Behavior

It’s safe to say the world has never experienced something quite like the Coronavirus pandemic. Three months after appearing in Wuhan, China, the virus has infected more than 1.4 million individuals worldwide and claimed at least 87,000 lives. Countries have had to radically overhaul systems that have been in place for decades to help contain the virus. And many experts say things may not go back to ‘normal’ once the pandemic dies down.

One interesting development with the announcement of lockdowns in various U.S. states was the increased demand for marijuana. Both recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries were seeing increased sales as people stocked up. Soon after, most of the states with legal marijuana programs declared marijuana as essential, thus allowing the industry to keep running during the pandemic.

Although marijuana businesses haven’t been granted access to disaster relief loans, most states have passed emergency measures to allow them to transact with their customers under safer and more hygienic conditions. This includes allowing curbside pickups and home deliveries.

According to Vice, people tend to smoke, drink or eat poorly during times of great stress. Dubbed ‘headlines distress disorder,’ it has led to a surge in the sale of alcoholic beverages during stressful times such as the one we’re currently facing. Headset reports that U.S. adult-use markets have shown an average daily sales increase of 10%.

“Historically, alcohol sales frequently rise during times of economic distress, regional disasters, etc. There is no reason to believe that cannabis sales would be any different and there will likely be a prolonged upswing for the foreseeable future,” says Sue Bachorski, formerly with Constellation Brands for 30 years and currently with the House of Saka.

Data released by Headset as of April 2 shows that the type of cannabis products consumers have been buying has changed. Edibles recorded a 28% increase in sales and cannabis-infused beverages, which previously accounted for only 1% of the market, saw a 14% increase. The Coronavirus attacks the respiratory system, so you would expect consumers to opt out of smoking or vaping cannabis.

“In these uncertain and challenging times, it’s an encouraging silver lining to see cannabis consumers increasingly seeking out infused beverages. There are likely several factors affecting the recent rise in sales, but an important takeaway is that infused beverages are typically designed for individual consumption and can be consumed discreetly,” says Vertosa CEO Ben Larson.

“They are also an approachable, familiar way to consume cannabis for less experienced users and those looking to avoid smoking during this time.”

Experts believe that the cannabis industry, including Round Meadow Holdings Corp. and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD), is studying these changes in consumer preferences and they will certainly adjust their strategies accordingly.

420 with CNW – North Dakota Campaigners Suspend Marijuana Legalization Drive Due to COVID-19

Three months after first appearing Wuhan, China, the Coronavirus has left the entire world in a panic. Most of us have never experienced something of such epic proportions, with more than one million people infected and over 60,000 lives lost. Presently, most governments have issued directives to help curb the spread of the virus.

People are directed to stay indoors and only leave when they absolutely have to, and all but the most essential businesses have shut down operations. Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t been easy on the economy, with more than 6 million people filing for unemployment last week, the largest number ever. The lockdown has also affected numerous campaigns to legalize marijuana in various capacities.

In North Dakota, with most people staying indoors to avoid contracting the virus, signature collecting activities have ground to a halt. Due to this situation, activists recently announced that they are suspending their campaign to add marijuana legalization to the November ballot.

A Facebook post by Legalize ND said, “We are going to have to face a few hard realities going forward. Due to the virus all of our major avenues for signature collection have been postponed, and going door to door is not safe for both those knocking and those whose doors are being knocked on.”

Unlike states like Idaho that allow some form of online signature collection, North Dakota doesn’t have a provision for signature collection through the mail or online. According to Legalize ND, they needed to collect 13,433 valid signatures from voters before July 6. However, with the current situation, the campaign will have to shift its focus to the 2022 primary election.

“Businesses will continue to collect, but we don’t want to create another vector for the Coronavirus. As a result, at this time if something major doesn’t change we will not be able to make the 2020 ballot,” said the post.

Legalize ND’s proposed initiative would have allowed individuals to purchase and possess up to two ounces of cannabis. It would impose a 10% excise tax and establish a regulatory body to approve licenses for marijuana businesses. However, unlike a previous version of the initiative that voters rejected, this version would prohibit home growing.

North Dakota isn’t the only state whose drug legalization initiatives have taken a backseat. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently said that legalization wouldn’t happen through the budget as he had hoped. In California, activists for campaigns to amend the legal cannabis program have asked for a digital signage option.

Analysts are certain that the news of yet another cancelled legalization campaign is likely to be a disappointment to sector players like Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) who are yearning for some good news amidst the rampaging COVID-19 pandemic.

420 with CNW – Marijuana Companies Donate PPE and Sanitizers to Healthcare Workers in COVID-19 Fight

Hand sanitizer has become one of the most precious commodities on the market right now. Three months after appearing in Wuhan, China, the Coronavirus pandemic has infected over 700,000 individuals and claimed at least 30,000 lives. Medical experts say regularly washing your hands with soap and water or sanitizer is the best way to avoid contracting the virus, alongside social distancing and self-isolation.

However, panic buying coupled with an extremely high demand for hand sanitizers and personal protection equipment (PPE) has led to a shortage. And as the number of COVID-19 patients increases, we can expect more shortages, especially as most hospitals are already trying to stretch their resources.  To help alleviate this, firms that don’t traditionally manufacture sanitizer have pledged to use their facilities to produce free hand sanitizer, and the cannabis industry hasn’t been left behind.

Cannabis was recently categorized as an essential service, and numerous state governments have taken steps to ensure cannabis businesses remain operational during the lockdown. These include online purchasing, home deliveries, and curbside pickups. A few marijuana companies have decided to donate resources to help in the fight against the Coronavirus.

Glass House Group uses PPE gowns in its cultivation facilities for pest control, and the firm donated 1,000 PPE gowns to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Glass House Group also runs a dispensary, the Farmacy in Santa Barbara, which started a Food Bank give back program to ensure kids receive a healthy lunch. On top of that, the company will provide two weeks of paid sick leave for any employee who is infected with the virus.

Santa Rosa, California based firm CannaCraft is using ethanol from cannabis extraction to create a hand sanitizer formulation. According to Tiffany Devitt, President of Wellness, the company had several thousand pump bottles that couldn’t be used due to a change in regulations.

“With the combination of the ingredients, our large scale manufacturing equipment, and our team of in-house chemists, we were ready to start making a lot of hand sanitizer within days of learning about the shortage around the country.” The firm had 25,000 bottles slated for distribution, and its goal is to make 100,000 bottles of hand sanitizer with their next order.

Canopy Growth, on the other hand, has donated health equipment like gloves, face masks and bodysuits to local hospitals in Canada. “We committed our personal protective equipment from our recently shuttered B.C sites to the frontline staff at a local health unit in Victoria,” said spokeswoman Jordan Sinclair.

Analysts say the cannabis companies mentioned in the discussion above are just a tiny fraction of the industry and they believe that all sector players, including Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD), are doing everything that they can to help in the fight against this pandemic that has brought the world to a near-standstill.

420 with CNW – Federal Agency Seeks Help in Standardizing THC Dosage

Cannabis has come a long way on its journey to legalization. Just a few years ago, it was illegal at both federal and state level, but now there are numerous states that allow medical or recreational marijuana within their borders. The plant is said to have potent medical properties that make it effective against a wide variety of ailments, but a lot of the evidence is anecdotal.

However, unlike ordinary pharmaceutical drugs, cannabis poses a challenge to researchers looking to provide standardized evidence of its efficacy and side effects. Its medicinal properties can be attributed to a group of unique chemicals called cannabinoids. Present only in the cannabis plant, they interact with the body and produce therapeutic effects. THC, the main psychoactive chemical, is produced in greater quantities than all other cannabinoids.

However, different cannabis varieties produce different levels of the chemicals, and this has made creating standard dosage a nightmare. To alleviate this and push forward research into the plant’s abilities, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is requesting advice from “the scientific community and other interested parties” to help establish a standard. This will ensure consistency among studies into the potential therapeutic benefits and risks of cannabis.

“One hindrance to conducting such research is the lack of a standardized measure of the THC in various cannabis products, making it hard to compare the results of different studies,” stated the agency in its request for information.

Published on Monday, the notice by NIDA admits that the agency knows little about the impact of varying THC potency and that creating a standard unit could help resolve the issue.

“As the diversity of products, potency, and use of cannabis increases, research grows ever more critical to determine both the adverse health effects and therapeutic potential of cannabis and its constituents. Recognizing that a perfect measure may not be attainable at the current time, NIDA still believes that a standard dose would improve measures of outcomes in relation to exposure, and this could inform policy and public health strategies around cannabis use.”

The notice also acknowledges that cannabis contains other chemicals (cannabinoids) that could complicate standardization, as well as the impact of different consumption methods. However, the agency states that “such a unit is critical for conducting rigorous cannabis research,” and it is looking into a five milligram THC dose as the standardized unit.

This comes a month after NIDA Director Nora Volkow discussed the importance of establishing a standardized THC unit. She stated that due to the lack of standardization, studies often show conflicting results. Ultimately, she says, the use of a standard unit dose of THC is an important step for improving our ability to understand the effects of cannabis in the population.”

Analysts are of the view that this request for advice will be seen as good news by sector players like Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) who want to see some degree of agreement between the scientific community interested in investigating the properties of marijuana.

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD), together with the BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service, today announced a sharp rise in demand for its cannabis delivery service, driving an associated 10% week-over-week rise in total sales over the past two weeks. According to the update, the company believes this dynamic is being driven by the stay-at-home trend that has emerged in many communities around the world in response to the global COVID-19 outbreak. “The Coronavirus pandemic is undeniably a game-changer for consumer behavior patterns that will likely have long-term implications as it drives new habits into place,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan, who recently announced a large stake in BudCars with an option for a controlling stake, said in the news release. “As a growing mobile ecommerce and delivery service in one of the fastest growing commercial markets, BudCars is extremely well-positioned for this dynamic. CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Announces 300% Growth in Budcar Delivery Volume, Eyes $15M 2020 Revenue Target

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today announced a dramatic 300% sequential monthly jump in delivery volume in BudCars Cannabis Delivery Service in February. According to the update, the rise in volume follows the company’s negotiated agreement toward a controlling stake in Budcars and its investment in expanding the leading delivery service’s operations and reach in Northern California. Provided recent data on growth in daily orders is reliable and indicative of the impact of the company’s recent measures over coming months, management projects a Budcars top-line run-rate capable of surpassing $15 million in sales in 2020. “Some of our shareholders have suggested that our vision for a massively expanded and vertically integrated Budcars might be explained to the world as the ‘Uber Eats of the cannabis market.’ But we believe that’s actually a dramatic underestimation of where Budcars is headed,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan said in the news release. “This is far more promising from a bottom-line perspective, given that we aren’t simply delivering someone else’s product. The retailer gets the juicy 20 percent net margin in this business. We are positioning ourselves as a ‘Cannabis concierge service’ focusing on a truly unique cannabis experience.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) and Budcars Significantly Increase Cannabis Delivery Reach in Northern California

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD), together with cannabis delivery service Budcars, this morning announced a substantial expansion of cannabis delivery services within the Sacramento metropolitan area. The expansion will include adding the communities of Granite Bay, Folsom, Arden Arcade, Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Orangevale, and Roseville/Rocklin this week. “The investment in Budcars and this geographic expansion are just the start of Sugarmade’s moves into California’s regulated cannabis marketplace. With the significant turmoil in California’s cannabis marketplace occurring over the past year and the resulting industry shakeout, we are seeing a host of very attractive investment opportunities. We feel Sugarmade’s capital structure is conducive to addressing these pending opportunities and we are in the process of performing due diligence on several. We are particularly interested in the many cultivation and retail non-storefront opportunities that now exist. CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Announces Growth Strategy, Eyes Strong Opportunities in Delivery Services, Manufacturing via Co-Branding and Selective Genetic Cultivation

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today released statements from its Chief Executive Officer, Jimmy Chan, relating to the company’s growth strategy within the regulated California cannabis marketplace. “The regulated cannabis market in California is changing quickly with new investment and operational opportunities opening as acceptance grows among the public, as the industry moves past its initial growth stage and as the crackdown on black market operators continues,” Chan said in the news release. “Several market sectors where prospects looked bleak only a few months ago now hold strong promise. It is in these areas where we are targeting our investing activities. In particular, we are seeing strong opportunities in delivery services (non-storefront retailer), manufacturing via co-branding and selective genetic cultivation. But, we believe being highly selective and targeting only the best of these opportunities is the only sound strategic growth strategy. This is the corporate mission for Sugarmade moving into the rest of 2020.”

CannabisNewsBreaks – Sugarmade, Inc. (SGMD) Closes Agreement to Acquire Significant Stake in Sacramento-Based Budcars Cannabis Delivery Service

Sugarmade (OTCQB: SGMD) today announced the closing of an agreement to acquire a significant stake in Sacramento-based Budcars Cannabis Delivery Service, owned by Indigo Dye Group Corp. According to the update, Sugarmade will acquire 40% of Budcars for $700,000 and will be granted an option to purchase an additional 30% stake, providing Sugarmade with a controlling interest in the growing delivery service, which serves the greater Sacramento, California metropolitan area.  “Many of us have seen the multitudes of negative news stories about problems in California’s regulated cannabis industry.  While there certainly are issues, there are also many positive changes happening as state regulators fine-tune the system,” Sugarmade CEO Jimmy Chan said in the news release.  “One of these positive changes is the ongoing crackdown on illegal black-market operators, who have made it difficult for licensed operators to make profits.  As illegal operators are driven out of the market, companies like Budcars will have meaningfully improved business fundamentals.  While this was an important consideration relative to our investment, we are also excited about many other aspects of the Budcars business and its future growth prospects.”
