HempNewsBreaks – SinglePoint Inc. (SING) Leverages Rising Popularity of 1606 Hemp Cigarettes

SinglePoint (OTCQB: SING) recently announced plans to expand the launch of its 1606 Hemp cigarettes with a new six-pack countertop display (http://cnw.fm/9dOOJ). An article discussing the company’s new hemp initiatives reads, “‘The great thing about the hemp cigarette is, unlike tobacco, the hemp product can sit up on the counter,’ commented Lambrecht in the interview. Made from broad-spectrum, American-grown, harvested and cured hemp flower, the filtered pre-rolls are made with less than 0.3% THC and contain nearly 20% CBD in each pre-roll, providing a smooth alternative to tobacco products. With a fast-growing fan base of loyal users, the pre-rolls have seen a sales growth rate of 133% this quarter over the previous quarter along with a 233% growth in sales when compared with the same point last month. . . . ‘I was in that business for 30 years and actually took a cigar distribution company public on the Nasdaq,’ explained Lambrecht. ‘We’re really excited about this box that we developed because this box is going to be able to sit right up at the counter. We’re going to be sending that out to our extensive store list, so I think in the upcoming weeks I’m hopefully going to really have some big results on some sales from some big chains and distributors that are going to take this product on.’”

420 with CNW – There’s No Link Between Marijuana Use and Increased Stroke Risk, Study Finds

As more states legalize marijuana and its use becomes more prevalent, there have been numerous studies about its potential risks and benefits. In particular, there have been a number of conflicting results regarding marijuana use and increased stroke risk, with some studies stating that it reduces the risk while others argue that it exponentially increases the risk. According to a recent study by a team of neurologists at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, there is no link between increased stroke risk and marijuana use.

The team analyzed data from nearly 10,000 individuals and they found that cannabis use does not increase your risk of having a stroke. “Previous studies that investigated cannabis use and risk of stroke have had conflicting results, some showing a decreased risk and others showing a greatly increased risk,” says Carmela San Luis, MD, lead investigator and a member of the American Academy of Neurology (“AAN”).

“Our observational study looked specifically at recent cannabis use by reviewing drug testing data for people admitted to the hospital. While more research is needed with larger numbers of people, our study lends support to the studies showing that cannabis use does not increase the risk of stroke.” San Luis and a team of colleagues from the University of Mississippi in Jackson designed the study to assess potential correlations between marijuana use (a positive cannabinoid urine drug screen on admission) and a diagnosis of an acute ischemic stroke.

They studied de-identified data from 9,350 patients who were 18 years old and over admitted in the University of Mississippi Medical Center from 2015 -2017, and only 18% of the patients tested positive for cannabis use. Ischemic stroke was observed in 7.91% (130) of the 1,643 individuals who tested positive for cannabis and in 15.66% (1207) of those who tested negative. The database also granted the researchers access to information related to age, ethnicity, sickle cell disease, family history of stroke, hypertension status, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cigarette smoking, atrial fibrillation, carotid artery stenosis and other cardiac conditions. They were included as confounders in the researchers’ multivariate logistic regression analysis.

San Luis notes that the study only captured whether people had used marijuana recently and that it did not collect information on how much marijuana was consumed or any other information about their history of prior use.

“Our research adds to the list of studies with conflicting results, so it’s important to continue to investigate stroke risk and cannabis use. Future studies are now needed in larger groups of people that not only include data from drug screenings but also from dosing amounts and a person’s history of cannabis use.”

Industry watchers say the findings of such studies are of interest to sector players like SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING) since the industry would greatly benefit once reliable third-party information is widely available on the various myths and misconceptions circulating about marijuana.

420 with CNW – The White House is Reviewing FDA Research Guidelines on Marijuana and CBD

For the past year or so, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has been under mounting pressure from advocates and stakeholders to create a comprehensive regulatory plan for the growing CBD industry. Although the nascent industry is already worth millions in sales and filled with tons of sellers, it is barely regulated. Not only has this made it difficult for businesses to operate, but it has called into question the efficacy and safety of the products being sold.

Last week, the agency submitted a draft of a federal plan for marijuana and CBD research titled ‘Cannabis and Cannabis-Derived Compounds: Quality Considerations for Clinical Research’ to the White House Office of Management and Budget (“OMB”). Although details on the contents of the document are sparse, an FDA spokesman indicated that it is related to the agency’s ongoing work to develop broader CBD regulations. These regulations would eventually allow for the marketing of cannabis products as dietary supplements or food items.

“We recognize that there is substantial public interest in marketing and accessing CBD for a variety of products. We are working toward a goal of providing additional guidance, and have made substantial progress. There are many questions to explore regarding the science, safety, effectiveness, and quality of products containing CBD, and we need to do our due diligence,” said the FDA in a statement.

“As part of our work, the FDA continues to explore potential pathways for various types of CBD products to be lawfully marketed. An important component of this work is obtaining and evaluating information to address outstanding questions related to the safety of CBD products that will inform our consideration of potential regulatory frameworks  for CBD while maintaining the FDA’s rigorous public health standards.”

Stakeholders will now have to wait and see if the FDA will wait for the guidance to be finalized by the OMB and for the required research to be completed before crafting a regulatory structure for the industry.

However, according to former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, White House policies requiring OMB to review scientific documents in the first place is an erroneous step that delays the issuance of guidance. “OMB new policies have led to the unprecedented review of FDA’s technical and scientific guidelines, documents in development and review for two years, including on clinical research on prescription cannabis compounds and endorphins for studies of opioid use disorder,” he says.

The FDA, on the other hand, says that it “will continue to update the public about our path forward as our work progresses, and provide information that is based in sound science and data.”

Industry watchers say the cannabis industry, including entities like SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING), is hoping that the FDA will not release research guidelines that make it almost impossible to perform any meaningful research.

420 with CNW – Marijuana Business Losses During the Pandemic May Be Covered by Insurance

2020 definitely isn’t playing out how we thought it would. America started the year with record low unemployment rates but by the end of May, had lost most of the gains it had made in the past fifty years and was looking at Great Depression levels of unemployment. Small businesses have definitely been hit hard, with most of the government issued coronavirus-related measures disrupting their operations and effectively cutting off their cash flows. Although most states with legal cannabis deemed the industry essential, cannabis establishments haven’t been spared from losses.

The federal government issued disaster relief funds to be dispersed to small businesses through the Small Business Administration but due to federal prohibition, cannabis businesses have been denied access to these funds. However, this doesn’t mean you just have to grin and bear it. Insurance may be a way to reduce the financial trauma your business is currently experiencing. Business interruption insurance, for instance, covers losses from direct interruption to the insured’s operations due natural disasters or fire, and the insurer makes good on items such as lost revenues, rent or utilities.

Contingent business interruption, on the other hand, is generally concerned with lost income due to third party issues like problems with vendors or suppliers. However, the type of coverage you get depends on the policy and riders you purchased. After the 2003 SARS outbreak, most insurers started excluding coverage from disease outbreaks, but some insurers offer disease-related riders for purchase.

Conventional policies can cover everything from payroll, extended period of indemnity, contingent extra expense (reimburses lost profits and expenses arising from interruptions at the supplier’s or customer’s location), to ingress/egress which pays for loss of income caused by physical loss that prevents entry into the insured’s business. Many policies that cover business interruption provide that mere loss of income alone may not qualify, and they require the insured to prove they have lost physical use of the business.

If you were lucky or blessed with the foresight to get disease-specific coverage, it could offer compensation for losses arising from the temporary closure of the business to sanitize and protect employers and consumers.

The first thing you ought to do if you’re hoping to get some coverage during this crisis is to request a copy of your policy. Go through it with a fine-toothed comb to see what exactly is covered and what isn’t. Since such documents tend to be drafted by insurance companies’ lawyers, try to get help from someone equally knowledgeable to level the playing field. You may end up getting enough coverage to help you weather the coronavirus pandemic.

Analysts say all cannabis sector players, such as SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING), are likely to learn lots of lessons from this pandemic and expand their insurance coverage to avoid suffering lots of losses when another disaster of this magnitude strikes.

420 with CNW – Argentina Legalized and Gives Away Free Medical Marijuana

Cannabis has been prohibited for decades, but in the past few years, attitudes have started shifting. The U.S. has been one of the pioneer countries, with numerous states allowing either recreational use, medical use or both, and generating billions of dollars in sales. Canada hasn’t done so bad either, with the world’s largest cannabis company, Canopy Growth situated in Smith Falls, Ontario. However, one country that seems to have made quite progressive marijuana reforms while staying relatively under the radar is Argentina.

In 2009, the Supreme Court made a landmark ruling, the Arriola decision, declaring that personal use of small amounts of marijuana was legal. It was based on a case involving five people who were arrested for possessing small amounts of cannabis, and the court determined that as long as it is meant for personal use only, cannot affect or hurt anyone else and does not pose any harm or danger, small amounts of cannabis are not illegal. As the court stated, “each adult is free to make lifestyle decisions without the intervention of the state,” and in the meantime, the time and resources that would have been spent on marijuana possession cases goes to more worthwhile causes.

Trafficking of cannabis is still illegal in the country, however, and can attract a prison sentence of 4-15 years. Commercial growing is also illegal for residents.

Medical marijuana, on the other hand, was legalized by a March 2017 bill. The legislation requires patients who want access to medical marijuana to register with the national program, with approved patients, including children, being guaranteed free access. Personal cultivation is still illegal for medical cannabis and it carries a sentence of up to two years.

A section of the medical marijuana legislation mandated the creation of the National Program for the Study and Research of the Medicinal Use of the Cannabis Plant and its By-Products and Non-Conventional treatments. Basically Argentina’s medical marijuana program is intended to provide access to medical cannabis, and the law states that those who require medicine from cannabis can receive it for free. As long as you qualify as a patient, you will have access to free medical cannabis oil. The program is also set up as a research initiative and the free cannabis oil is given as part of the research program.

At the moment, only the most debilitating illnesses qualify one for medical marijuana, but more illnesses may be included as the program expands. Still, the government has made efforts to ensure patients can get medicine whether they have money or not, and other territories should also aim to establish a medical cannabis program aimed at helping their citizens.

It would be interesting to hear what cannabis companies like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) have to say about the approach taken by Argentina in granting patients access to medical marijuana.
