420 with CNW – Massachusetts Patients Turn to Maine for Affordable Medical Marijuana

Fifty year old Ingrid Martinez is terminally ill and undergoing chemotherapy. Martinez uses medical marijuana to manage pain and nausea. She resides in Lowell, and before she got sick, she was working in medical coding. Martinez travels to Maine after every three weeks to buy marijuana rather than get her supplies from Massachusetts where she resides.

She has a Massachusetts medical marijuana card, but she said that the MMJ is expensive in the Bay State. Martinez stopped using marijuana at some point because she could not afford it, and that is why she travels to Maine because it is cheaper than in Massachusetts.

Although it is illegal to transport marijuana across state lines, patients from Massachusetts are driving to Maine to purchase medical marijuana because it is affordable. Late August, Maine started accepting Massachusetts medical marijuana cards, and since then, marijuana outlets bordering the states have encountered a large number of customers from the Bay State.

The marijuana outlets in Maine started receiving more customers after the officials in Massachusetts banned the sale of vaping products except those used to vape crushed marijuana buds.

The owner of Your Green Thumb Caregivers in Kittery, Pam Edwards, whose shop is less than 30 minutes’ drive from northeastern Massachusetts, said that about 30% of her business comes from Bay State residents.

Edward further said that most of her customers told her that Maine has a wide range of products with better prices. She also noted that customers from Massachusetts rub their eyes when they see the costs of the merchandise because they cannot believe they are that cheap.

Recently, the online menu for Your Green Thumb Caregivers’ price for 1/8 ounce of marijuana was ranging between $20 and $50 while the rate for the same quantity at Patriot Care in Lowell was $50. Your Green Thumb Caregivers had 35-plus flower options while Alternative Therapies in Salem had 12 options.

The Price of Weed is a website that compares marijuana prices in different states. On Friday, it showed that medium quality marijuana in Massachusetts was going for $282 per ounce while in Maine, it was $232 an ounce.

A medical marijuana patient and advocate, Mike Crawford, said that he drives to Your Green Thumb Caregivers from North Shore every week to buy legal weed at an affordable price. He noted that the first time he bought the pot, he felt like it’s Christmas.

Crawford also noted that Maine stores have more price options depending on the quality of the weed. Compared to Massachusetts, the prices and products are better in Maine.

The law governing the marijuana market in Massachusetts is stringent as it requires the medical marijuana companies to grow their marijuana products, and this controls all aspects of sales. While in Maine, there are eight licensed dispensaries, which are large businesses. The state also has caregivers and small-scale independent farmers who are allowed to open retail stores and sell marijuana.

Another reason why marijuana is cheaper in Maine is that the cost of a license application is also low. The license fee for a farmer who is looking to grow 30 mature and 60 immature marijuana plants is $1,200 in Maine, while in Massachusetts, it is $30,000 plus an application fee of $1,500.

Massachusetts also has strict testing and packaging requirements, which are non-existent in Maine.

However, there are risks involved since in Massachusetts the products have labels detailing the ingredients while in Maine, you are taking a chance with each product you buy.

Experts suggest that marijuana companies like Sproutly Canada Inc. (CSE: SPR) (OTCQB: SRUTF) (FRA: 38G) and The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) may need to prevail on their counterparts to form associations that set uniform standards that all products must adhere to in order to give consumers the best that the industry has to offer.

420 with CNW – What You Should Know About Cannabis Drinkables

Marijuana consumers are in love with cannabis beverages because they are discreet, taste good, require no equipment to use, and they are familiar with a safe delivery system.

In the cannabis market today, weed-infused drinks are one of the fastest moving products. These drinks include tinctures that are mixed with cocktails, non-alcoholic wines, beer, or champagne. Companies are also producing wellness beverages that, when taken they induce sleep; thus, instead of taking aspirin or Ibuprofen after hard exercises or games, take a marijuana cocktail, and you will feel relaxed in no time. Sparkling drinks are also infused with weed as they attract Millennials as well as the baby boomers who are not a fan of smoking.

Discussed below are answers to some of the common questions on marijuana beverages:

There are many marijuana beverages, why?

Drinkable marijuana comes in various forms, and these include liquid medicine, intoxicating drinks, and wellness shots. BDS Analytics is a company that tracks marijuana trends, and in mid-2019, it found that there 88 beverage brands on the market, which was 18 more than in 2018 at the same time. The total percentage of marijuana edibles in the market in the U.S. in 2018 was 6%. BDS estimates that by 2020, marijuana beverages, including those infused with CBD and THC sold in retail outlets and non-THC drinks sold in supermarkets and convenience stores, could be worth $1 billion.

Why did marijuana beverages take long to get on the market?

The process of producing weed-infused drinks is complicated because cannabinoids do not mix with water; instead, they float to the surface. Before coming up with marijuana beverages, researchers have done several hit-or-miss experiments. A Seattle-based beverage tech company, SoRSE, is among the marijuana innovators in the industry. The company is trying to establish how marijuana oils can be converted into water-soluble emulsions, which do not have taste or smell.

SoRSE vice president, Michael Flemmen, said that they used food-grade components approved by the FDA. The food-grade components are safe for consumption. Some of the products manufactured by the company include happy, sparkling, and marijuana-infused drinks, which include Utopia, a fruit-flavored sparkling water.

Will marijuana-infused drinks trigger paranoia?

The founder and Chief Technology Officer for Spherex, Niccolo Aieta, said that the marijuana-infused beverages have the advantage of predictability over edibles. Spherex is based in Denver, and it develops weed concentrates. An example of such a product includes Phyx, which is a sparkling water infused with light doses of THC and CBD. Compared to edibles, marijuana drinks reacts faster with body metabolism and the endocannabinoid system, and its effects are noticeable almost immediately. In this way, you can control how high you get with drinkables and thereby prevent sliding into paranoia.

Where can you buy cannabis beverages?

Consumers can purchase the drinks from the product’s website or in dispensaries in the states where marijuana is legal. Hemp-derived CBD drinks can be also be found in grocery shops in all the 50 states.

Nic Balzer, who is a member of U.S. Hemp Roundtable, said that the industry is faced with a lot of regulatory challenges, and they are hoping the FDA will make their ruling on the matter soon.

Analysts say the desire for regulations expressed by Nic Balzer is likely to be echoed by other sector players like The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) since they too are affected by the unregulated cannabis drinks segment.

420 with CNW – Michigan Starts Issuing Recreational Marijuana Sales Licenses

The legal sale of adult-use cannabis will happen soon after Michigan regulators issued the program’s first business license on Tuesday.

While inside a retailer’s Ann Arbor store, the director of Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency, Andrew Brisbo, issued three licenses to the leaders of Exclusive Brands. The licenses permit the business to grow, process, and sell adult-use pot.

The general manager of Exclusive Brands, Nick Warra, said that licensing marijuana businesses would help in breaking down decades of stigma surrounding smoking weed. While standing inside the Ann Harbor store, Warra added that buying weed will be like going to the liquor store to purchase alcohol.

Michigan residents approved the legalization of recreational marijuana through the ballot in November 2018. Since then, the state regulators have been working to develop a recreational licensing program.

However, medical marijuana patients are worried about the hurried issuance of adult-use business licenses because already, there is a shortage of medical cannabis products on the market, which may be made worse by the sale of recreational weed.

Last week, Michigan’s regulatory authority announced that medical marijuana businesses could sell 50% of their inventory to recreational cannabis customers. The first sale of adult-use weed is expected to be on December 1.

According to Warra, Exclusive Brands has had a medical marijuana business license since 2017. The business will start selling adult-use marijuana on Dec. 1. Delays in selling would be a result of the lack of a statewide tracking system for cannabis.

Warra also added that Exclusive Brands would be working closely with the vendors to make sure that they are ready to launch on December 1.

The selling date of recreational weed might be shifted to Dec. 2 because Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday, which comes immediately after the Thanksgiving holiday. But, license holders have to request permission from the state regulators before using medical marijuana products for the adult-use market.

The spokesperson for the Marijuana Regulatory Agency, David Harns, said that it is uncertain when the sale of recreational pot will start.

Warra revealed that it is still uncertain how many people will show up for the first day of sales of recreational weed, but the numbers are likely to be overwhelming since recreational marijuana is widely popular among residents.

The executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, Robin Schneider, criticized the agency decision allowing the transfer of medical marijuana to the recreational market by saying that already, there is a shortage of medical marijuana supply on the market and the transfers will only drive up the product cost for the patients.

However, Warra countered that there are enough products in their company to services both medical and recreational consumers. He also added that Exclusive Brands is in a position to grow, process, and sell its cannabis. He added that businesses that do not own cultivation and processing facilities are the ones that may experience limited supply.

The ability to transfer products from medical marijuana markets to the recreational side will allow retailers to move products where there is demand.

On Tuesday, MRA issued five licenses with two permits being awarded to Real Leaf Solutions, which is based in Kalkaska. It was granted an event organizer license. PSI Labs, which is based in Ann Arbor, was awarded a permit for a safety compliance facility.

Brisbo said that many more licenses would be awarded in the short term. Analysts believe this announcement is music to the ears of the broader cannabis industry, including companies like The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) and HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC), that would like to see more people enjoying the numerous benefits of marijuana.

420 with CNW – Georgia’s Medical Marijuana Program Kicks into High Gear

Georgia’s key leaders have launched a program providing the state’s 15,000 registered patients with medical marijuana seven months after the Governor approved the program.

Licensing for companies seeking to grow and sell medical marijuana oil would be granted by a seven-member commission, which was appointed by Governor Kemp, House Speaker David Ralston, and Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan.

According to Georgia state laws, marijuana oil can be used to treat Parkinson’s disease, severe seizures, and terminal cancer as well as other ailments.

In 2019, the state of Georgia enacted a law called Georgia’s Hope Act, which allowed the commission to develop a medical marijuana distribution system across the state and establish testing regulations. It also issued licenses to businesses seeking to sell cannabis oil with low levels of THC.

Governor Kemp said that the Act provides Georgia residents with a means of treating chronic and debilitating illnesses.

The Georgia Access to Medical Marijuana Commission (GAMM) is made up of three doctors, chief of police, a health policy professor, the president of the Board of Pharmacy in Georgia, and a small business owner. Dr. Edwards is the principal surgeon for the Atlanta Neurosurgical & Spine Institute and the chairman of GAMM.

It will take a while before the rules are passed, permits are granted, and cultivation and sale of medical marijuana products begins. Thrower, who suffers from muscle spasms and chronic pain, said that patients have waited for a long time and cannot wait any longer.

For two and a half years since moving from Illinois, Thrower has been receiving medical marijuana through illegal channels to manage her symptoms. She noted that she wants legal and consistent means of getting medical marijuana.

Thrower volunteers with a group that helps people with disabilities. She said that the government should consider the needs of the patients when implementing the medical marijuana program.

The state vetted more than 50 candidates before naming the members of the commission. The medical marijuana laws on appointing the members of the commission were stringent. One of the rules stipulated that the members of the commission are not supposed to harbor a monetary interest in the marijuana industry during the four-year appointment period and five years after their period has elapsed.

A former state representative Allen Peake said that he expected the commission to include parents with patients suffering from the qualifying conditions.

According to Georgia’s medical marijuana bill, licenses for cultivation would be issued for up to 9 acres of indoor growing space.

The commission will issue medical marijuana cultivation licenses to two large corporations and four smaller companies. Also, the University of Georgia and Fort Valley State University will submit applications for the production of cannabis oil.

The commission would allow the sale of marijuana with less than 5% THC. Compared to CBD oil which has 0.3% of THC, medical marijuana oil has more THC at 5%.

Experts opine that cannabis industry actors like The Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX.V: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) and HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) hope that now that a commission is in place, patients in the state will not wait very long to start accessing medical marijuana for their symptoms.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Supreme Cannabis Company Inc. (TSX: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) (FRA: 53S1) Announces Q1 2020 Results, $90 Million Credit Facility led by Bank of Montreal

Supreme Cannabis Company (TSX: FIRE) (OTCQX: SPRWF) (FRA: 53S1) on Thursday announced the release of its financial and operating results for the first quarter ended September 30, 2019. In addition, the company announced its entry into a credit agreement with Bank of Montreal (“BMO”) as Lead Arranger and Agent on behalf of a group of lenders for $90 million of senior secured credit facilities consisting of a term loan of $70 million and a revolving credit facility of $20 million. “In the first quarter of fiscal 2020, we operated through challenging market conditions while integrating new businesses and product planning for the second half of the year. Overall, our financial results reflect the inherent difficulties of operating in a new regulated industry and the transitionary period we are in as we evolve from a predominantly wholesale business to a leading cannabis CPG company in Canada. Despite these challenges, in the quarter we improved production operations to generate industry-leading margins of 62% and made the strategic decisions necessary to position our businesses for meaningful revenue generation from flower, flower convenience products and select derivative products in the remainder of fiscal 2020,” Supreme Cannabis CEO Navdeep Dhaliwal said in the news release. “The closing of up to $90 million in credit facilities from tier one lenders is a significant achievement that positions the company to execute on our strategy and prudently grow the business in fiscal 2020 and beyond.”
