420 with CNW – Study Finds Marijuana Makes Women Have Better Sex

For as long as marijuana has been used recreationally, there have been anecdotal reports among the women who enjoy cannabis that it spices things up in the bedroom. Heck, there are even THC infused lubricants on the market that promise increased arousal and better orgasms, but do they really work? Or is it a placebo effect, where it seems to work because you want it to work, or is there any truth behind these claims?

A growing body of research indicates that there is indeed a correlation between cannabis and sex, even though the science behind it is still a little fuzzy. A recent study that was published last week in the Journal Science Medicine asked women who used cannabis about their sexual experiences, and the researchers found that more frequent cannabis use was associated with heightened arousal, stronger orgasms, and greater sexual satisfaction in general.

“Our results demonstrate that increasing frequency of cannabis use is associated with improved sexual function and is associated with increased satisfaction, orgasm and sexual desire,” says the study authors. The team of researchers asked 452 women about their cannabis use and asked them to fill out a Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), which is a questionnaire designed to assess sexual function over the past four weeks. The questionnaire scored desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain.

“To our knowledge, this study is the first to use a validated questionnaire to assess the association between female sexual function and aspects of cannabis use including frequency, chemovar and indication.” A higher FSFI score usually denotes better sexual function while a lower score indicates sexual dysfunction and as the researchers analyzed the survey results, they determined that more frequent cannabis consumption was associated with lower rates of sexual dysfunction.

Respondents who had higher FSFI scores used cannabis more frequently, and they also had a higher specific FSFI subdomain score, indicating greater arousal and better orgasms. The study also found that frequent cannabis consumption led to low levels of sex-related pain. However, the researchers couldn’t determine which marijuana products worked best for sexual stimulation.

“Our study did not find an association between cannabis chemovar, (for example THC vs. CBD, reason for cannabis use) and female sexual function. Neither the method of consumption nor the type of cannabis consumed seemed to impact sexual function.

Analysts think that the results of this study may not have come as a surprise to companies like The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER) who have always believed that scientists still have a long way to go before the full benefits of cannabis are documented.

420 with CNW – Senators Urge USDA to Loosen Restrictive Hemp Rules

Two Senators from Oregon have written to the USDA asking the agency to make some adjustments to the interim hemp final rule before they are finalized. The letter, written on Wednesday, was signed by Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden. Both are Democrats from Oregon.

The two lawmakers were particularly concerned about two regulations which the regulator had suspended temporarily but has intentions of reinstating. The first has to do with requiring all hemp farmers to have their crops tested only at labs certified by the Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”).

Previously, there had been an outcry about the shortage of DEA-registered labs across the country, and that feedback prompted the USDA to suspend this particular regulation for a while. The Senators are concerned that the USDA recently published a list of approved hemp testing labs, and all of them are certified by the DEA. However, none of them is located within Oregon, and that means that the implementation of the requirement to use only DEA-certified labs will impose added costs and inconveniences to Oregon farmers since they will have no choice but to ship samples out of state for testing. The lawmakers are therefore calling on the USDA to drop this particular rule altogether.

The second regulation that the Senators have issues with is the stipulation that any “hot hemp” (hemp whose THC concentration is found to exceed the federally imposed limit) should be destroyed under the supervision of the DEA.

The Senators say that since the DEA wasn’t involved during the testing and destruction of hot hemp under the 2014 Farm Bill (which established pilot programs), there is no need for the agency to be in charge of destroying non-compliant hemp.

The lawmakers suggest that the USDA revises its rules to allow farmers to dispose of hot hemp in a way that is in line with agricultural practices and enriches the soil’s health. For example, farmers can compost the hot hemp and use it to fertilize their land. The farmers can also use disking to boost soil health using the rejected crop.

The two Senators also mentioned other changes that they would like the federal regulator to implement in order to create a suitable regulatory framework for the hemp industry.

For example, the Senators recommend that the threshold for the legally accepted THC limit be lifted from the current 0.5% to at least 1%. That threshold marks the level at which a farmer can be prosecuted for growing marijuana, and it shouldn’t be confused with the 0.3% THC content which is acceptable in hemp-derived products. This change may be a tough one to make since Secretary Sonny Perdue admitted that the restrictive threshold was the result of the DEA’s adamant position on the matter. Analysts say sector players like The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER) are all hoping that the USDA pays close attention to the comments it received and makes changes which will not throttle the young industry.

420 with CNW – Navy Stops Sailors and Marines from Using Hemp Shampoo

Last year, the U.S. Navy issued a notice banning all sailors and marines from using products containing CBD. This ban covered ingestible products, such as tinctures. Last week, the Navy issued another notice expanding the hemp or CBD product ban to include topicals like shampoos, lotions, conditioners, and soaps.

This Department of the Navy (“DON”) update comes shortly after Congress passed an amendment to a spending bill stipulating that serving and reserve members of the U.S. armed forces could use products containing hemp derivatives, such as CBD. However, the Senate version of this spending bill doesn’t have the amendment contained in the House version, so negotiations will determine whether this provision makes it into the text sent to President Trump’s desk for enactment.

It isn’t clear why the Navy has expanded its ban on the use of hemp products given that hemp and its derivatives were legalized by the 2018 Farm Bill. However, the different branches of the military have been concerned that there is a risk that service members could accidentally use products having more than the legally permissible levels of THC since the FDA isn’t regulating those hemp products which are currently available on the market.

Friday’s memo, which was signed by Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite, mentions that sailors and marines cannot rely on the product label to be sure that a given product doesn’t have THC levels which could show up during a drug test on urine samples.

The memo adds that the service takes substance abuse seriously since it can compromise the performance, operational readiness and disciple expected of all service members. The notice also adds that the ban doesn’t include the use of FDA-approved medicines, such as Epidiolex. Marines and sailors can also use durable products made from hemp. These include clothing and rope.

The notice clearly indicates that while some of those banned products may be legally available to civilians in different states and localities, members of the U.S. Navy aren’t allowed to use them until the FDA starts actively regulating those products.

The Department of Defense, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Air Force, and even NASA (which isn’t part of the U.S. military) have all issued notices banning their members from using products containing hemp and marijuana derivatives.

If the amendment sponsored by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) makes it into law, the branches of the military may be compelled to reconsider their position on the use of hemp products. Otherwise, experts say firms like The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) may have grounds to think that military service members are being unfairly denied a chance to benefit from hemp ingredients which have been scientifically proven to be beneficial.

Drink Companies Prepare for the Coming of CBD Beverages

CannabisNewsWire Editorial Coverage: CBD-infused beverages look set to hit the market in a big way in 2019.

  • Cannabidiol (CBD) is widely used in health and wellness products after spectacular growth in recent years.
  • Several companies are lining up to launch CBD drinks following legal changes in the United States and Canada.
  • Integrating these new offerings into wider product lines is accelerating CBD’s race for mainstream attention.

Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) (YGYI Profile) is one of the first to launch, with a CBD coffee coming in May and a CBD water in the works. The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (TSX.V: WTER), which is constantly growing its U.S. distribution network, plans to add a CBD bottled water to its range. The New Age Beverages Corporation (NASDAQ: NBEV) is adding CBD to its line of organic cold coffees and teas. Heineken (OTCQX: HEINY) has also entered the market by developing a cannabis-infused sparkling water through Lagunitas, its U.S. craft brewer. And the biggest investment in the overall cannabis space has come from Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ), which has invested $4 billion in a Canadian cannabis company.

Crossing the Boundary Between Two Industries

The most exciting new developments in business often come when separate trends or industries combine. For example, it was the combination of previously separate cameras, phones and portable music that brought us the smartphone, a technology that has transformed our lives. And while not every combination will be as socially disruptive as that computer in your pocket, each one brings new possibilities.

One of the hot crossover moves this year is the combination of the markets for beverages and for cannabidiol (CBD). The emergence of CBD over the past few years has transformed the cannabis space and allowed hemp producers to reach beyond their original markets. Beverages continue to be a powerful industry, in part through sporadic bursts of innovation such as the rise of energy drinks. Now one of those bursts is coming again as these two trends combine to produce CBD-infused drinks.

The Rise of CBD

In many ways, the popularity of CBD has caught businesses by surprise. Only a few years ago, it was an obscure chemical compound found in cannabis and hemp, not even the part of cannabis that got users high. Now it’s a newsworthy growth industry, with CBD products appearing on the shelves of health shops, pharmacists and vaping stores, as well as on dedicated online outlets. The trend has also led to the rise of new companies as well as investment from the likes of Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI). CBD isn’t everywhere yet, but it’s feeling close.

Though it wasn’t predictable, the rise of CBD is easy enough to explain. Since cannabis legalization began in the 1990s, extensive research and development has been conducted regarding the plant. One of the results is a greater understanding of and focus on the range of chemicals found in cannabis, instead of just the high-inducing THC. As researchers started finding and reporting evidence that CBD could be beneficial for health and wellness, a gold rush began.

One of the big advantages of CBD, especially for an omnidirectional lifestyle company such as Youngevity, is that it can establish a strong presence in markets that THC can’t reach. Shops that don’t sell cannabis are sometimes willing to stock CBD-infused products. Some jurisdictions allow the sale of CBD but not cannabis. With the cannabis space gaining momentum, CBD creates a route into that sector with fewer restrictions.

This is particularly true because of hemp, a form of cannabis that doesn’t contain THC and that the federal government legalized three months ago. CBD can be extracted from hemp, making it a profitable cash crop. A Youngevity subsidiary has recently acquired a 45-acre base in Florida purely for the purpose of meeting the demand for CBD.

CBD Beverages

The U.S. government’s widespread legalization of hemp through the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill last December has opened the way for a whole range of CBD endeavors. One of the most popular trends is expected to be CBD beverages.

Youngevity, which already has a strong presence in both beverages and CBD via its CLR Roasters and HempFX brands, has made the most of its established expertise to move quickly into this promising young market. The company has added a CBD-infused coffee to its Javalution coffee brand, which will go on sale at the end of May.

“We are extremely pleased with the taste of the product,” said Ernesto Aguila, president of CLR Roasters. “It is very exciting to bring a new product to market that has so much interest within the coffee beverage category. I have not seen a door opener like this since Javalution Coffee Company created the first fortified coffees.”

CBD beverages are more than just a novelty; they’re a way to make CBD consumption better fit with people’s everyday lives and socializing, and to blaze a trail for cannabis drinks to follow. By putting CBD in drinks, manufacturers such as Youngevity are making it possible for consumers to enjoy their CBD in common social settings, such as cafes, bars and restaurants. While one person orders an alcoholic drink and another sips a soft drink, a third could be enjoying a CBD drink, all at the same time. YGYI’s move helps brings CBD consumption into the mainstream.

YGYI’s strategy has been made easier by the relaxed approach of the FDA. While that authority claims jurisdiction over the use of CBD in food and beverages, the government entity hasn’t done much to limit its use. In the 21st century, the public will to suppress cannabis use is fading, and resistance against CBD appears to be almost nonexistent. A door has been opened, and companies such as Youngevity are walking in to make the most of it.

The Bigger Beverage Business

Part of bringing CBD into the mainstream is integrating it with other product lines. As long as CBD is separate in its own corner, persuading people to give it a try will be challenging. However, when it’s presented as simply one more option among a variety of beverages, raising awareness and use of the substance stands a better chance. That’s precisely what Youngevity is aiming to do through a recently announced agreement with water company Icelandic Glacial.

The deal will see the two companies work together as exclusive cross-marketing partners for the next three years. Icelandic Glacial drinks will appear alongside Javalution and other beverages in Youngevity’s direct-sales network.

Beyond this, the companies will also collaborate on creating new products targeting the lifestyle, health, food and beverage markets. A drinkable CBD product will be at the forefront of these developments, creating a connection between the purity of Iceland Glacial’s water and the relaxing potential of CBD.

This deal hasn’t just increased Youngevity’s product range. It has given the company more opportunity for growth and product development that will appeal both to the core CBD market and to a wider beverage consumer base.

A Changing Drinks Market

It seems that CBD might become the latest big disruptor in the beverage industry, which was last shaken up by the rise of energy drinks 20 years ago.

The fastest growing premium water brand in the US, The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (TSX.V: WTER), is distributed through more than 150,000 stores, including nine of America’s top-ten retailers by size. In 2018, the company announced a range of drinks targeting the health and wellness markets, including a water infused with vitamins and minerals and another with CBD. The company is waiting on FDA approval before launching its CBD water, but once the product is ready to go, it will have great reach thanks to the company’s strategy of regularly increasing its distribution network.

Founded in 2016, the New Age Beverages Corporation (NASDAQ: NBEV) is a young and vibrant company with a focus on healthy drinks produced in an environmentally and socially responsible way. In January, the company announced a deal for the distribution of CBD-infused beverages under its Marley brand. The Marley range of organic cold coffees and teas is already an established brand for New Age Beverages and a natural fit for entering the CBD market.

Hi-Fi Hops, Heineken’s (OTCQX: HEINY) cannabis beverage, was launched last year in two versions: one with 10 mg of THC and one with 5 mg of THC and 5 mg of CBD. The product is sold in California’s cannabis dispensaries and is the result of a collaboration between AbsoluteXtracts, a manufacturer of cannabis-based products, and Lagunitas. “The idea of being a part of a no-calorie beverage infused with cannabis seemed like a perfect next step in our product innovation and a natural way to marry our past with our future,” said Lagunitas CEO Maria Stipp.

Beverage giant Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE: STZ), which owns Corona beer and Svedka vodka, has made the biggest financial commitment so far to advancing CBD beverages. The company has invested $4 billion in Canopy Growth Corporation, one of Canada’s largest cannabis producers. The two companies will be working together to produce cannabis drinks, giving the sector a significant boost to its public profile thanks to Constellation’s marketing reach.

CBD drinks are a natural combination of two popular consumer sectors, and with so many companies invested in them, this looks likely to be the year they take off.

Keeping Up the Cannabis Momentum

Turbulent times in the United States are creating uncertainty for a number of industries. But for the cannabis industry, the past few years have been ones of constant growth. The spread of recreational and medical marijuana legalization across the United States and Canada has given the industry a huge boost, both financially and in its public profile, as has the increasing popularity of CBD products.

That growth is expected to continue, in large part thanks to the momentum from political change. The departure of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions offers the possibility that the White House may finally commit to President Donald Trump’s electoral promise of cannabis policy reform at the federal level. Meanwhile, the Democratic majority in the House, together with the hemp clauses in this year’s Farm Bill renewal, set the stage to make life easier for those looking to support the American hemp industry.

The Growth of Cannabis

The past few years have been good for cannabis and technology holding company SinglePoint, Inc. (OTCQB: SING). Like so many other companies working with cannabis, SinglePoint has benefited from a huge growth in business as a once-obscure sector of the economy turns into a growing powerhouse and major employer.

There’s an irony to the fact that, for most of the companies working in the cannabis space, being based in North America is what makes their business possible. Thirty years ago, this was the headquarters of the war on drugs — the U.S. government’s attempt to wipe out the cannabis industry alongside those producing and distributing other drugs. Now the United States and Canada are the world’s biggest markets for legal cannabis as reformers work to take pot profits away from criminal gangs and to bolster public health through a legal, well-regulated industry.

As of this year, cannabis is legal for medical consumption in two-thirds of U.S. states and for recreational use in a fifth of them. Recreational use became legal in Canada a month ago — the first G8 country to make such a move. This step forward has created a huge market for companies such as SinglePoint to tap into, with Colorado alone expecting to see a billion dollars of cannabis sales by the end of 2018.

This growth isn’t limited to cultivators and retailers, the obvious face of the cannabis industry. Those businesses need support services and infrastructure to do their work. SinglePoint provides a wide range of tech solutions tailored to the sector, including software to measure cultivation, track deliveries and make payments. Other businesses provide nutrients, hydroponic equipment and advisory services to the burgeoning cannabis sector.

This also means a growing number of jobs. These are diverse opportunities as well, with many of them involving specialist skills and training from bud tending to compliance, not to mention the coders crafting SinglePoint’s software. During a reporting period between January 2017 and July 2018, the number of job listings in the industry rose by a staggering 690 percent. And the global market is expected to exceed $146 billion in revenues by the end of 2025, driven in large part by events in North America.

Maintaining Marijuana’s Momentum

One of the most significant events of the past few weeks for the cannabis industry’s prospects has been the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

An outspoken opponent of cannabis reform, Sessions tried to roll back the President Barack Obama-era policy in which the federal government, though still treating cannabis as illegal, accepted the decisions of individual states to legalize it. The federal-level illegality of cannabis is an ongoing problem for the industry for several reasons, including that it makes banks and payment providers wary of providing services to cannabis businesses. Companies such as SinglePoint offer alternative payment solutions, but federal laws still limit the options. Sessions’ departure may create a real potential for change.

“This could present a major opportunity for SinglePoint to offer services we have been able to provide to other businesses for years,” said SinglePoint president Wil Ralston. “The biggest winner here could be the ancillary service provides and the potential access to banking.”

During his election campaign, President Trump promised reform on cannabis. But after two years of a Trump White House, there’s been nothing more substantial than vague rumors. With Sessions gone, now may be the time to act as more states move to legalize cannabis. And even without federal reform, changes on the state level are still positive for the industry. As SinglePoint CEO Greg Lambrecht said in an interview with MoneyTV, “as more states come on, it’s just better for us.”

CBD: A Cannabis Surprise Hit

The other big political reform about to hit the industry is the 2018 Farm Bill. Delayed by political conflict over food stamps and immigration, the bill’s passage is now expected to speed up as Republicans push through a version they can live with before losing control of the House. This bill is set to legalize the hemp industry in the United States, allowing the cultivation of a nonpsychoactive form of cannabis.

Hemp promises to be a big cash crop. CBD oil extracted from hemp is used in a wide range of health and wellness products, such as the CBD water and tinctures recently released through SinglePoint’s SingleSeed site. The CBD side of the industry reaches markets that raw cannabis can’t and, as a result, has seen huge growth, spreading into health stores and international markets.

But it’s through e-commerce that CBD has really taken off. More than $4 million of CBD products were sold through Amazon just in July this year. For companies, such as SinglePoint, that are using their own e-commerce stores, there’s even greater potential for profit than through Amazon. By providing both the product and the marketplace, they create a complete funnel to customers, benefitting from all the profits and building a loyal client base.

Beyond Weed

As SinglePoint’s software and the growth of the CBD market show, the cannabis industry is about far more than just selling weed.

For Terra Tech Corp. (OTCQX: TRTC), the focus is on supplying equipment. A producer of cultivation equipment such as hydroponics and moving tables, Terra Tech provides cannabis growers with the tools they need to grow rich, profitable crops. The growth of the industry has increased sales for hydroponics companies, a trend that’s expected to continue. Terra Tech is investing heavily in a hydroponics provider to reduce its costs and improve its ability to ensure supplies to growers.

The growing popularity of CBD has drawn in companies from outside the cannabis industry as well. American Premium Water Corp. (OTC: HIPH) is a diversified luxury consumer product company that uses biotech as the basis for health and beauty merchandise. It has produced a CBD-infused drink — Lalpina CBD water — that makes it one of the first to turn CBD into a widely available edible product.

Alkaline Water Company, Inc. (OTCQB: WTER) (TSX.V: WTER) announced the formation of its A88 Infused Beverage Division, Inc. The company currently offers products trademarked Alkaline88 that are available in more than 40,000 retail locations across the United States, including 39 of the top 50 grocers in the country. The new division — A88 — will focus on brand extension and product innovations in the healthful water category, with plans to offer a hemp-derived, CBD-infused Alkaline88 water product.

Level Brands, Inc. (NYSE American: LEVB) has launched a new line of CBD products developed jointly with Isodiol International, Inc. The products include CBD oral sprays marketed under kathy ireland® Health & Wellness; CBD edibles marketed under Chef Andre Carthen Edibles; and a CBD pain-relieving cream available under Ireland Men One, a men’s lifestyle brand focused on millennials.

The cannabis industry is already seeing huge growth, creating jobs and wealth. With legal reform in the United States and the momentum provided by e-commerce, this growth appears set to continue for a long time to come.
