420 with CNW — Feds Seek Help in Understanding Whether Kratom, Cannabis Can Treat Pain

As the short- and long-term effects of continued opioid use have become more apparent, people have started experimenting with safer alternatives. Cannabis and kratom, a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family, have emerged as promising candidates. Cannabis has long been used as a medicine to treat everything from chronic pain to stress and anxiety. Leaves and leaf extracts from kratom, which is legal in the United States, have been used as a stimulant and sedative, and the natural substance has also been reported to be effective at treating chronic pain.

A federal health agency is now conducting a review of studies into cannabis’s and kratom’s alleged pain-relieving abilities to see if the two could be used to treat chronic pain conditions with reduced side effects. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (“AHRQ”) says that the increase in opioid use, as well as overdoses, underscores the need for safer, plant-based alternatives.

AHRQ, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is also asking the public to point out any research on the benefits and risks of cannabinoids and kratom. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant, and they are responsible for its therapeutic and psychoactive effects. The agency stated in a public notice that cannabinoids, specifically THC, may have analgesic properties, but the research is “mixed.”.

Additional cannabinoids such as CBD, CBC and CBG may also have analgesic or anti-inflammatory properties, but they may be less potent than THC, AHRQ says. This isn’t the first time the agency has sought the public’s help in identifying studies on the risks and benefits of using cannabis for pain relief. Back in March 2019, the group announced that it was currently reviewing existing research on alternatives to opioids. AHRQ ultimately said that it didn’t find enough evidence to draw accurate conclusions.

The systematic review will ask four key questions: In adults with chronic pain, what are the benefits of cannabinoids? In adults with chronic pain, what are the harms of cannabinoids? In adults with chronic pain, what are the benefits of kratom or other plant-based substances for the treatment of chronic pain? In adults with chronic pain, what are the harms of kratom or other plant-based substances for chronic pain treatment?

The public will have until Jan. 4, 2021, to submit either published or unpublished research on the benefits and risks of using cannabis or kratom instead of opioids for chronic pain relief.

Aside from the research being done by the feds, several companies are soaring as a result of the legalization of hemp and marijuana. For example, The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) was launched in 2012, but it has made great strides in staking its claim as the maker of the best-tasting waster globally. WTER edibles and topicals, all infused with CBD, are also a hit.

The Alkaline Water Company (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) Inks Key Agreements; Expands into Hospitality, Foodservice Markets

  • WTER set to expand across the entire spectrum of hospitality, foodservice markets through key partnerships with Dot Foods, IBA
  • Lucrative segments such as golf foodservice, fast casuals, and vending and micro markets rapidly growing amid coronavirus outbreak
  • The Alkaline Water Company offers lifestyle brands that are a perfect complement for consumers seeking healthier choices

The Alkaline Water Company (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER), a producer of premium bottled alkaline and flavored-infused drinking waters and CBD-infused products, has set out to expand into hospitality and foodservice space. To secure coverage at both ends of the spectrum — from large national to large regional accounts — the Alkaline Water Company has entered into agreements with two strategic partners: Dot Foods Inc., the largest U.S. food redistribution company, and the Independent Broker Alliance (IBA), a renowned professional alliance of 30 independent foodservice sales agencies.

With these two agreements in place, WTER targets the whole hospitality and foodservice ecosystem, which is a very large addressable market, where even small share gains will fuel rapid growth for the company (https://cnw.fm/juoH0). According to the agreement with Dot Foods, the largest food redistribution company in the United States, Dot Foods will offer the entire line of Alkaline88(r) and A88 Infused(TM), along with the line’s eco-friendly aluminum bottles, to its 4,300 customers nationwide (https://cnw.fm/WQKxl). DOTs will also offer A88’s flavored waters as a featured all-natural flavored product, replacing a leading competitive brand that purportedly did over a million cases per year in the DOTS ecosystem.

“Adding the largest foodservice redistributor, Dot Foods, to our growing list of channel partners is another milestone for the company,” said The Alkaline Water Company president and CEO Richard Wright. “Every year, Dot Foods sells millions of cases of beverages to its customers. This relationship will give us an entry into the hospitality industry, which we view as a significant opportunity for our growing lifestyle brands. There are over 600,000 restaurants and foodservice establishments that will now have access to our full line of products.”

After announcing the agreement with IBS Foodservice, Wright noted that WTER now has two formidable partnerships to help it gain share in the hospitality and foodservice channel. “IBA is a highly respected professional foodservice sales and marketing organization comprised of 30 successful agencies,” he said. “With deep, long-term market-by-market relationships, the IBA has stellar local expertise in a well-connected, collaborative, and nationally respected alliance of independent brokers.

“Between our two partners, we expect DOT Foods to provide access to large national accounts and IBA to help us penetrate the large regional accounts across the entire hospitality and foodservice ecosystem,” Wright continued. “These partners give us the scale and scope to drive our growing lifestyle brands in the sizeable on-premise market estimated at over $14 billion by Beverage Marketing Corporation. We expect our single-serves, including A88 Infused flavors, eco-friendly aluminum bottles, and A88CBD infused lemon-lime water to do exceptionally well in the channel.”

WTER’s flagship product, Alkaline88, meets the growing demand from health-conscious, on-the-go consumers across lucrative markets. This smooth-tasting, mineral-enhanced beverage can be grabbed at restaurants, hotels, airports, stadiums, hospitals, schools, colleges/universities, parks, golf courses, health and fitness clubs, coffee shops, etc. One of these exciting sub-segments is the more than 15,500 golf courses and 4,415 private clubs managed by 13 golf-management companies in the U.S. Penetration of this market alone is expected to generate new opportunities, while fast-casual venues and vending machines are seeing accelerated growth in the post-COVID era (https://cnw.fm/YPRXQ).

As a company committed to an aggressive growth strategy, The Alkaline Water Company’s offering focuses on national, multichannel mass-market expansion with its premium, single-serve line of A88 water products. WTER’s products feature a growing list of infused flavors and are offered in eco-friendly aluminum bottles — an ideal fit for this lucrative space where consumers seek healthier, eco-friendly alternatives.

420 with CNW — Arkansas Governor Wants a More Aggressive Stance on Marijuana Legalization

Arkansas Gov. William Hutchinson states that the national government’s casual approach to cannabis is the reason why many more states are legalizing the drug. During a recent interview with the Washington Post, the governor of Arkansas explained that where the government’s stance on cannabis legalization is unclear, the legalization of drugs will continue, which brings about more measures for the legalization of cannabis at the state level.

Jeff Sessions, the first attorney general under outgoing President Donald Trump’s administration, revoked the counsel that was put in place by former President Barack Obama’s administration, which directed that state attorneys shouldn’t intrude on any state marijuana laws. However, apart from revoking former counsel, the Trump administration did not launch any extensive clamp down on people who complied with these local policies or the policies themselves.

Hutchinson explained that as long as the national government had a hands-off policy on all things marijuana in terms of legalization of marijuana in states, then the pressure for marijuana legalization will only grow. A lot of funds are used in that sector, which could result in additional initiatives to legalize the drug. Furthermore, increased funding poured into advertising these legalization initiatives and the lack of a clear position by the national government only furthers the cause. This is despite the fact that voters from Arkansas approved a measure on medical marijuana on their ballots in 2016.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that the Hutchinson was the Drug Enforcement Administration head during the President George. W. Bush administration. The governor also mentioned that earlier this year, activists of reform from the state had tried placing an initiative that would legalize cannabis on the ballot of the state. However, they did not succeed as they were unable to gather the number of signatures needed to qualify for placement on the ballot because of the social-distancing measures implemented after the COVID-19 pandemic began. He added that while the activists had not been successful, they would try again.

Two decades ago, Hutchinson had the DEA raid various medical marijuana dispensaries in California, despite the fact that the dispensaries were legal. At the time, California was among the few states that had legalized medical cannabis.

When the governor was asked about the election victories seen in the states such as Oregon, which had legalized cannabis, he criticized the victories. It should be noted, however, that clinical studies have disproven many “reasons” that are cited by prohibitionists as reasons why cannabis should not be legalized.

The increase in the number of states with regulated cannabis markets has created a chance for many companies to grow. An example of such a company is The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER). WTER’s signature premium alkaline water as well as CBD-infused products can be found on the shelves of a minimum of 70,000 leading retail outlets around the United States.

420 with CNW — Marijuana Potency Has Spiked in the Recent 50 Years

A team of researchers from the University of Bath Addiction and Mental Health Group has discovered that street marijuana around the globe is substantially stronger now than it was 50 years ago. This, they say, increases the risk of harm. The team incorporated into its study a minimum of 80,000 marijuana samples that had been tested within the past five decades from street samples collected in New Zealand, Italy, Denmark, France, Netherlands, UK and the United States. The research was financed by the Society for the Study of Addiction with the study’s findings being reported in the “Addiction” journal.

The researchers explored how THC concentrations had changed in various types of marijuana as the years rolled by. In herbal marijuana, the team discovered that the concentration of THC registered a 14% jump in the years 1970 through 2017. This was largely because the growing popular share of more potent marijuana varieties such as sinsemilla, which was preferred to traditional herbal marijuana, had less THC and contained seeds.

The researchers found prior evidence indicating that using marijuana with higher THC levels frequently carries an increased risk of issues such as psychotic disorders and addiction. Dr. Tom Freeman, the study’s lead author, stated that as the strength of marijuana increased, the number of individuals who entered treatment for marijuana use problems also grew. More Europeans, he said, were now receiving treatment because of marijuana than cocaine or heroin.

The team discovered that the THC increase was especially high for cannabis resin, as THC concentrations spiked by 24% in the period 1975 through 2017. According to the study’s findings, cannabis resin, which is extracted from herbal marijuana, is generally stronger than herbal marijuana. The researchers also looked at CBD concentrations but found no evidence for changes in CBD in marijuana over time.

Sam Craft, the study’s coauthor, explained that hash or cannabis resin is commonly seen as safer than other marijuana types. However, their findings show that hash is now more potent than herbal marijuana. In the past, hash contained lower quantities of CBD and THC, and while cannabidiol’s concentration has not changed, the concentration of THC has grown considerably. This led the researchers to conclude that consuming the drug may be potentially more harmful today than decades ago.

Marijuana takes pole position among illicit drugs consumed across the globe and has been legalized recently in some states in the U.S. as well as in Uruguay and Canada. This study’s findings are particularly relevant as they shed light on the safety of marijuana as more call for it to be legalized in various nations around the world. The researchers assert that the rise in the strength of marijuana puts the spotlight on the need to execute broader strategies to reduce the drug’s harm, similar to the strategies used for liquor. These strategies include public guidelines on safer limits of consumption as well as standard units. This would help individuals limit their consumption and use marijuana more safely.

The cannabis sector is seeing major transformations orchestrated by many industry leaders. One of those industry leaders is The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER). The company specializes in using a proprietary electrolysis system to produce premium alkaline water, and WTER is also making edible and topical products infused with CBD.

420 with CNW — GrowDiaries Mishap Leaves Millions of Cannabis Grower Passwords Exposed

GrowDiaries is an online community of cannabis growers that allows its members to ask questions, interact with other members and blog about their crops. In September, the company suffered a major security breach that left millions of users’ posts, passwords and other data exposed. The unprotected database was discovered by researcher Volodymyr “Bob” Diachenko on Oct. 10, 2020. Diachenko, who is known for pointing out unsecured databases, said the company was responsible for the vulnerability.

He reports on LinkedIn that two Kibana apps, which are usually used by IT and development staff to manage Elasticsearch databases, were left unsecured without a password since September 22. Through these two unsecured apps, attackers could access two sets of Elasticsearch databases. According to Diachenko, the databases consisted of around 1.4 million records containing IP addresses and email addresses and another 2 million records containing hashed account passwords and user posts.

The MD5 hashed format that the passwords were stored in is notoriously vulnerable, says Diachenko, and attackers could easily crack it and access the plain-text passwords, allowing them access to the users’ data. The exposed IP addresses spanned a wide range of provinces and countries, including a couple that still outlaw cannabis. After Diachenko reported the unsecured Kibana apps to GrowDiaries, the company secured its database but did not offer any further communication.

He states that since he probably wasn’t the only one looking for databases vulnerable to attackers, it is very likely that someone else was able to access and download user data from GrowDiaries’ Elasticssearch databases. Although the company has not replied to any inquiries on the matter, the website’s FAQ portion assures customers that their data is safe. “GrowDiaries is entirely safe and sound to use and retail outlet information on. We do not shop or share any particular information and facts. All meta-knowledge is erased.”

Diachenko advises GrowDiaries users to change their passwords across all platforms, not just on GrowDiaries, to avoid “stuffing” attacks. These kinds of attacks employ an automated bug that plugs in different combinations of stolen passwords and usernames in an attempt to break into other websites and apps.

Community members should also keep an eye out for phishing attacks where an individual is sent an email, text or instant message with a malicious link. Clicking on these links allows attackers to install malware onto your system, freeze it as part of a ransomware attack orsteal funds and sensitive information.

An entity that you should watch in the cannabis industry is The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER). This company not only makes premium alkaline water but also has a line of CBD-infused topical as well as ingestible products.

CannabisNewsBreaks – The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER) Announces Fiscal Q2 Results

The Alkaline Water Company (CSE: WTER) (NASDAQ: WTER), a producer of premium bottled alkaline and flavored-infused drinking waters and CBD-infused products, on Monday announced revenue of $10.8 million for the fiscal second quarter ended September 30, 2020. “During the fiscal second quarter, we made good progress toward our strategic goals, gained market share, launched innovating new products, added leading partners, and expanded into new growth markets, all while navigating through a challenging COVID environment. Our quarterly growth was impacted as various distributors reduced deliveries and cleared excess inventory built in the prior quarter. Delivery and inventory trends continued to improve throughout the quarter, with order activity reverting to pre-pandemic levels,” said Richard A. Wright, president and chief executive officer of The Alkaline Water Company. “Our fiscal third quarter is off to a strong start, and we are seeing a record month of sales for October. Demand for our lifestyle brands at the retail level remains strong, and revenue grew a healthy 21% during the first half of our fiscal year. According to the October 3 Nielsen’s data, our flagship brand, Alkaline88(R), has been the fastest-growing non-flavored value-added water in the top 10 brands over the last 13, 26, and 52 week period. Our footprint continues to grow nationally, and this quarter alone, we added over 1,000 new store locations for our A88 family of lifestyle brands. We see strong momentum across all our product categories and consider this quarter’s performance to be an outlier. As of early November, inventory at retailers has normalized, driven by our aggressive summer marketing efforts. We believe the actions taken positions us for stronger growth for the balance of this fiscal year and beyond.”

420 with CNW — Medical Marijuana May Be Future Treatment for Alcoholism

Research carried out by the School of Public Health and Social Policy at the University of Victoria along with the Canadian Institute for Substance Abuse Research revealed that people who used medical marijuana experienced a decline in their alcohol consumption.

The study involved 1,000 medical marijuana patients in Canada and examined them on their habits, which included questions on their alcohol consumption. The study’s findings revealed a decline in alcohol use.

The study asserted that marijuana can affect the use of other psychoactive substances, including illicit drugs, tobacco, alcohol and prescription medications. However, little research has been conducted that looks into the factors linked to these changes in substance use.

During the study, 18% of the individuals who were polled reported that they abstained from alcohol, 85% claimed that they decreased the drinks they consumed every week and 44% reported a decline in the frequency of their alcohol consumption as they used medical marijuana.

From the Canadian medical marijuana program, a sample of 2,102 individuals provided their data, with each individual giving answers based on their medical marijuana use throughout the study and how it affected their alcohol consumption. More than 970 respondents who used alcohol at least 10 times over a year before starting to use medical marijuana were also included in the study. The researchers then assessed retrospective data on amount of alcohol and the frequency of use before and after medical marijuana initiation.

It is estimated that about 107 million people around the globe suffer from alcohol use disorder. This is a physical and mental addiction that’s common. The use of marijuana/medical marijuana to help decrease alcohol use is good news for many. Additionally, the WHO reports that marijuana is 114 times safer than alcohol, with alcoholism killing 3 million individuals around the globe annually.

The study findings suggest that the use of medical marijuana may be linked to reductions in alcohol intake and cessation among medical marijuana patients. Liquor is the most common recreational substance in North America, and it has high rates of mortality, morbidity and criminality as a result of its use. The authors of the study claim that these findings may bring about better health outcomes for medical marijuana patients and improve general safety and public health as well.

While this is only one study that looks into the link between the use of alcohol and medical marijuana, it may be the key to more research that supports marijuana treatment as a way to keep off liquor.

420 with CNW — Connecticut Governor Says Legalizing Pot Good for Public Health Amid Pandemic

With several states legalizing cannabis use, marijuana tourism has been on the rise. Cannabis tourism, or traveling across state lines to purchase and consume the infamous plant, attracts millions of visitors and dollars to states that allow recreational cannabis. However, with the coronavirus pandemic raging, traveling across state lines for cannabis may not be safe, says Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Gov. Lamont said that legalizing cannabis amid the coronavirus crisis would be a big win for public health. With work-from-home and social-distancing measures in place to curb the spread of the virus, the last thing states need is people driving back and forth across state lines for marijuana. Connecticut doesn’t allow recreational cannabis yet but is surrounded by states that do, creating a situation where consumers are more likely to travel to neighboring states.

During his interview, Lamont stated that officials have “got to think regionally when it comes to how we deal with the pandemic, and I think we have to think regionally when it comes to marijuana as well.” When asked whether he would pursue cannabis legalization next year, Lamont said that he thinks he will.

Connecticut is facing a budget deficit of $2 billion, and the governor has shied away from increasing taxes or cutting government spending. Without stimulus funds, he says, Connecticut may very well slide into a mild recession and suffer even more job losses. The cannabis industry has proven to be quite resilient during the pandemic, and taxing cannabis sales would be a great way to close the deficit and boost revenues.

“Right now, I’m surrounded by states — New Jersey and Massachusetts — where marijuana is already legal,” said Lamont. “I don’t need a lot of people driving back and forth across the border. We’re trying to keep people close to home as best as we can right now. I think legalizing marijuana, doing that safely and making sure no poison is laced in, I think is one way to keep people closer to home.”

Although voters in neighboring New Jersey voted in favor of a referendum to legalize cannabis during last week’s election, marijuana possession, use and sales will still be prohibited until lawmakers pass enabling legislation for the program. In a separate appearance, Lamont stated that the passage of cannabis legislation in New Jersey as well as ongoing cannabis reform efforts throughout the Northeast underscores the need for Connecticut to enact cannabis policy change.

A company you should watch in the marijuana industry is The Alkaline Water Company Inc. (NASDAQ: WTER) (CSE: WTER). This maker of alkaline as well as flavored water has also unveiled a line of CBD-infused products.
