420 with CNW – Tech Companies Launch First Digital Payment Platform for Marijuana

For several years since American states started legalizing marijuana, the most significant challenge has been the issue of dealing with finance since financial institutions such as banks and credit unions were wary of conducting business with marijuana companies. This is because marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, hence making it illegal.

The marijuana industry has been forced to operate on a cash basis due to a lack of access to financial institutions, and this has led to a load of challenges such as slower payments and vulnerability to theft.

The inability of marijuana businesses to transact with financial institutions has affected the sector from the back end supply chain to the final consumer.

A platform that could revolutionize the financial system of marijuana businesses has been launched by two technology companies, Wayv and Hypur. Wayv has been added to Amazon to help marijuana companies sell their products.

The two companies provide marijuana business with a payment platform where a marijuana business can accept credit cards like for any other transactions. This allows marijuana brands to distribute products to retailers on credit. And Wayv auto-debits the retailers on the due dates.

The payment dashboard on the Wayv system allows brands to track payments for purchases, and due dates of retailers’ credits. The system also calculates taxes and fees automatically.

The payment platform is designed in a manner that ensures that the businesses are compliant in every single step. This ensures transparency by enabling marijuana companies to conduct digital transactions just like any other business.

Speaking to High Times, the CEO of Wayv, Keith McCarty, said that the payment platform is integrated with compliance systems, which makes it impossible to carry out noncompliant actions. The system creates a level of trust that allows the banks to embrace and adopt the system.

The Wayv platform provides marijuana business with a fast mode of digital payments system throughout the supply chain, and Wayv may eventually change how the marijuana industry operates.

Finance has been a significant issue in the marijuana supply chain, which eventually affects the consumers, said McCarty. Consequently, if money is not sufficiently flowing within the marijuana brands, it will be difficult to reinvest in raw materials and infrastructure to meet the demands of the consumers.

Wayv introduced a Dynamic Distribution Platform in the market earlier this year. The platform helps transform the marijuana supply chain into a design such as that of Amazon with a streamlined process. The system facilitates transactions between marijuana brands and retailers whereby retailers can shop brands, choose products, and place product orders from the easy to use interface. The products are then shipped to the retailers within a day using Wayv specialized logistics procedures.

California is the only city where businesses and consumers can use Wayv. However, the company is looking to expand to other states.

Speaking to High Times, McCarty said that the turnkey solutions platform was designed for the marijuana industry. He also adds that the platform was built by experts who have extensive knowledge of cannabis.

Industry watchers see the introduction of this payments platform as good news for marijuana industry actors like Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) who now have one more option to handle their payments digitally.

420 with CNW – Bipartisan Lawmakers Urge DEA to Allow Researchers to Study Cannabis from Dispensaries

On Friday, a bipartisan coalition of legislators from the House and Senate sent a letter to the Department of Justice requesting policy amendments, which would allow researchers to use marijuana bought from state-legal dispensaries for their studies on its benefits and risks.

The legislators were led by Rep. Harley Rouda (D-CA) and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI). In the letter, they cited federal health agencies’ feedback where they said that research on marijuana is inhibited by the existing restrictions on cannabis. The primary challenge is that there exists only one federally-authorized facility producing research-grade marijuana.

Although the DEA said that they are in the process of authorizing more manufacturers, three years have passed since they announced approving more research-grade marijuana growers. The same agency further noted that it is in the process of developing alternative rules for licensing submitted applications.

However, the National Institute of Health and the Food and Drug Administration released a status quo report that did not address the barriers inhibiting researchers from using marijuana obtained from dispensaries for their research. The letter recommends for the agencies to allow researchers to use marijuana acquired from the state-legal dispensaries.

The legislators wrote in their letter that many states have marijuana laws and regulations in place for licensing industrial manufacturing activities and products for medical marijuana but not for research purposes, which would lead to FDA licensure.

The letter also repeatedly pointed out the lack of chemical diversity of the marijuana supplied by the federal government. One study found that marijuana obtained from a national research facility is more similar to hemp than to cannabis found in the market.

The bipartisan coalition made two recommendations; the first one is the amendment of internal policy which would allow researchers with Schedule 1 licenses to obtain marijuana-derived products from state-legal dispensaries for study. The second one is to issue guidance clarifying that DEA licenses are not a must for hemp researchers and that they can obtain hemp since it was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill across the U.S.

The DEA is required to issue a response to the letter by December 20.

Twenty-one members of Congress signed the letter, including Senators such as Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Joe Kennedy (D-MA), and Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

In a press release, Rouda said that the U.S. research laws are ancient. He also noted that 47 states have some form of marijuana legalization, and the federal agencies must ensure that there is a way to study the benefits and risks of marijuana products.

In April, Attorney General William Barr received a similar letter requesting for an increase in the number of federally-approved cannabis cultivators.

It is widely believed that letters, such as the one written by these bipartisan lawmakers, no longer excite marijuana industry members like No Borders Inc. (OTC: NBDR) and Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) since no concrete action has so far resulted from such letters.

420 with CNW – DEA Puts Final Touches to 2020 Marijuana Cultivation Plans

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) plans for authorizing the cultivation of 3.2 million grams of marijuana for research purposes in the 2020 planting season has been finalized. The 3.2 million grams is a 30% increase from 2019.

In September, the DEA published a notice in the Federal Register which proposed the 3.2 million grams production of weed. The final notice to be released includes the sentiments of the people collected during the public comment period, which were from the health care providers, the general public, and state and federal officials.

Most of the comments focused on the proposed reduction of opioid production by the DEA, citing that this could result in a shortage in the prescription, which could impact the patients negatively.

However, the DEA still decreased production quotas for certain opioids such as oxymorphone and oxycodone. The initial production of Oxycodone was 72, 593,983 grams, but the DEA reduced the final quota to 67,593,983 grams.

The marijuana production quota did not change at the end of the public comment timeline.

According to the DEA, the quota represents the estimated medical, scientific, study, and industrial needs of the U.S. for legal export requirements, and the establishment and preservation of reserve stock. The DEA further said that there has been an increase in demand for research-grade cannabis, and more states are legalizing marijuana for medical or adult-use purposes.

In the initial notice, compared to 2017, the number of agencies registered with the DEA to conduct marijuana research or on its derivatives, extracts, and THC has increased by 40% in 2019. In 2017, the number of registered agencies was 384, and by January 2019, the number had risen to 542.

Despite the increase in the marijuana production quota and the number of registered researchers, there is only one marijuana cultivation facility that is authorized by the federal government, the University of Mississippi farm. Three years have passed since the DEA said that it would approve additional manufacturers of research marijuana, but it is yet to take action.

This summer, scientists filed a lawsuit against the DEA, arguing that it is using delaying tactics and failing to fulfill its duties of approving more than 24 applications for federally approved marijuana growers.

In August, the DEA made an announcement saying that due to the overwhelming number of applications, the agency had developed alternative regulations for processing the applications. This resulted in the dismissal of the lawsuit before the federal court since the agency was taking the necessary measures to resolve the issue brought before court.

Researchers and legislators also said that the University of Mississippi farm does not have all the marijuana products being traded on the market. Some of the marijuana contains lower levels of THC and other cannabinoids, which undermines the quality of the studies.

According to one study, the chemical composition of marijuana from federal farms was closer to that of hemp than of other marijuana available on the market, and this made it more urgent to license additional producers for research-grade marijuana.

Industry watchers are certain that marijuana companies, such as Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) (OTCQB: CANSF), may have preferred that the federal agency announces additional producers so that the larger production quota can avail the quality of marijuana needed by researchers.

420 with CNW – Superstar Drake Joins Cannabis Industry by Partnering with Canadian Pot Company

The booming marijuana sector and the ever-growing hemp-derived CBD industry has attracted the attention of celebrities and athletes who are signing up to pitch for either of the brands. On Thursday, the hip-hop artist Drake whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, entered into a partnership with Canopy Growth, a Canadian pot company, to launch his own cannabis company, More Life Growth in his hometown, Toronto.

Drake has joined the wave of celebrities who are partnering with cannabis companies either by selling products, being brand ambassadors, joining their Board of Directors, or in his case, partnering with Canopy Growth on a joint venture business.

Some of the other celebrities who are in cannabis business include Gweneth Paltrow, Jay-Z, Martha Stewart, Montel Williams, Snoop Dogg, Tony Hawk, Willie Nelson, and Whoopi Goldberg. And the question on everyone’s mind is if we have gotten to the peak of celebrity cannabis?

Kantar is a business insight and brand consulting firm whose senior Vice President, Ryan McConnell, said that celebrity involvement in the marijuana businesses is yet to be fully saturated.

Marijuana is an emerging industry that is still regarded as illegal by some, and through celebrity endorsement and collaboration, the sector is gaining credibility and trust among the citizens.

Diana Eberlein, who is an entertainment marketing specialist, said that celebrity involvement is not a guarantee for brand growth because people are attracted to real and authentic brands.

Eberlein, who is now the head of marketing at SoRSE, further said that a brand would lose its audience faster if it does not feel authentic. SoRSE is a marijuana company that produces water-soluble cannabis oil. Mad Tasty is a company that develops hemp sparkling water. Ryan Tedder, One Republic singer, founded Mad Tasty. Tedder’s company worked with SoRSE in the production of water-soluble marijuana oil.

Eberlein said that although Drake is very popular, he is not readily associated with marijuana. However, he has a huge following, and the More Life Growth Company’s success will depend on his and his team’s marketing efforts.

His agreement with Canopy Growth is not very different from those of other celebrities as it will involve endorsements, investments, and offering advice on some issues. Drake is the majority shareholder of More Life Growth, said Cassel’s, the law firm representing the Canadian company.

The agreement between Drake and the company shows that 60% of the shares of More Life Growth belongs to Drake, while Canopy Growth retains 40%. This gives the company the ability to utilize certain intellectual property rights in Canada and across the globe.

According to Andrew Carter, an analyst working with brokerage and investment banking Stifel, brand development in Canada is under strict restriction against using celebrity names; Carter believes that Canopy is yielding to financial gain since the company has been in an operational and financial bind.

It remains to be seen what marijuana industry players like Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Green Growth Brands Inc. (CSE: GGB) (OTCQB: GGBXF) make of this technique of trying to break into new markets by partnering with celebrities.

HempNewsBreaks – Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) Posts Financial Results for Three and Nine Months Ended September 30

Youngevity International (NASDAQ: YGYI), a multi-channel lifestyle company operating in three distinct business segments including its newly acquired commercial hemp enterprise, on Monday reported financial results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2019. The company reported that revenues for the third quarter decreased 13% to $34,017,000 as compared to $39,082,000 during the same period in 2018. The company also hosted a conference call on Monday to discuss its financial results, quarterly and yearly highlights and business outlook. A replay of the webcast will be available on the Investors section of the company’s website. “We are not pleased with Q3’s performance, however, we are confident that we made the appropriate moves in Q3 pivoting our commercial hemp enterprise business model. The decision to expand Khrysos Industries into an 82,000 square foot, pharma grade, post processing facility has prolonged the period of time we will operate our commercial hemp enterprise on a pre-revenue basis, however, ultimately this decision is expected to accelerate our ability to compete, scale, and grow profitable revenue as we close out 2019 and move into 2020,” Youngevity International president and CFO Dave Briskie stated in the news release.
