420 with CNW – Five Benefits of Marijuana to Seniors

Our bodies demand more care as we age. By the year 2030, one estimate suggests that the number of seniors with some ailment will be double the current number. This equates to 15 million senior citizens. The forecast prompted the search of ways in which cannabis can help improve the lives of the elderly.

The good thing is that cannabis is still considered as a newcomer in the medical field, so it has a lot of untapped potential. It is not a wonder to see more research on the effects of marijuana and its impact on the elderly in the future. Discussed below are five ways marijuana benefits seniors.

  1. Marijuana Improves Quality of Life

Most of our body organs begin to fail as we get older, which is the most significant source of pain and discomfort in seniors. More so, the probability of the elderly experiencing inflammation,  high blood pressure, mental and bone issues is very high. Studies show that the best way of getting relief from these ailments is by using marijuana.

  1. Safety

America is facing a severe crisis of Opioid-related deaths; therefore, the U.S should come up with a plan of regulating medical marijuana to patients as this will diminish use of opioid drugs. Contrary to the famous belief that opioids affect the younger generation, a survey carried out in 2018 shows that more than 2.8 million seniors abused prescription drugs. Seniors consuming opioids have high chances of falling; thus, ending up in nursing homes. The risks can be reduced by giving them an appropriate dosage of cannabis instead of letting them rely on opioids.

  1. Fosters a Sense of Community

Seniors are prone to loneliness which is the primary cause of depression, diseases, and sometimes death. Marijuana consumption enhances the mind, and this could help the seniors by improving their creativity and social skills. It also enables them to go into relaxation mode.

  1. It is Natural

Marijuana medicines are made from the natural components of marijuana, such as CBD. CBD helps treat patients gently and carefully. The marijuana plant has multiple uses and can be consumed through several methods such as baking cookies, applying oils on the body, vaping, or smoking. It helps in managing a wide range of diseases and managing symptoms of conditions such as epilepsy and autism.

  1. Does not Cause a High

Being a little high is not bad for the mind; however, it is not a must for the seniors to get high to get relief. Experts have come up with medical marijuana rich in the nonpsychoactive compound of marijuana known as Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD does not give the high effect of weed, so seniors can benefit from marijuana without being high.

Experts believe that it such huge benefits to this important demographic that urge marijuana industry players like Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) and Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) to keep searching for better ways to formulate products for different segments of the population.

420 with CNW – Oregon Lab Offers Vitamin E Acetate Testing Services

An analytic laboratory in Oregon is offering additional testing services to detect the presence of vitamin E acetate in cannabis vape products.

Vitamin E acetate has been linked to the hundreds of people who have developed pulmonary illnesses after vaping cannabis oil, and at least six fatalities have been attributed to these tainted cannabis products. The Portland-based Pixis Labs started performing tests for vitamin E acetate on Monday.

The lab developed the test after it emerged that federal and state health authorities were investigating the possibility that the spate of lung illnesses arising after people vaped cannabis oil products could be linked to the additive (vitamin E acetate).

On its own, the additive isn’t dangerous because it is a supplement that people have taken for long either orally or topically. However, when it is combusted, it gets into lung tissues and causes similar problems to what has been reported in the media.

Why, then do people put it in vape cartridges? As media investigations have revealed, some unscrupulous people have been adding this supplement in cannabis oil in order to dilute it or make it thinner.

The motivation for the inclusion of this additive are twofold. First, those making counterfeit vape cartridges may be unable to make cannabis oil whose viscosity is low enough to allow the oil to be vaped. In order to thin the oil, these illicit entities add vitamin E acetate to cannabis oil.

Secondly, cannabis oil is a highly priced product. It is therefore possible that unregulated actors are taking advantage of the high demand for cannabis oil by adulterating it with vitamin E acetate in order to make more money from a small amount of cannabis oil.

Pixis Labs general manager Derrick Tanner revealed that the testing facility had run several tests using samples provided by consumers in order to validate how well the testing equipment works. He was however tightlipped as to whether those initial tests had detected the additive in any of the samples provided.

Tanner added that 3grams of cannabis oil are needed to conduct this test that currently costs $140 at the lab.

Currently, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission hasn’t yet issued any regulatory changes in light of the risks posed by cannabis vape oil tainted with vitamin E acetate. For example, the labelling guidelines still don’t require processors to indicate what additives are present in the vape oil.

However, the state agency has announced that it will not hesitate to take any action necessary in order to protect the public from this emerging public health threat. The Trump administration plans to ban flavored e-cig nicotine liquids.

It isn’t clear whether this ban will also apply to vape cartridges that don’t contain nicotine, such as those having cannabis oil. That notwithstanding, experts think industry participants, such as Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Cannabis Stragetic Ventures Inc. (OTCQB: NUGS), would welcome any measure taken to bring this latest health threat to an end.

420 with CNW – Mississippians Likely to Vote on Medical Cannabis After Ballot Measure Signatures Are Submitted

Voters in Mississippi are likely to be given a chance to cast their vote to decide whether medical marijuana should be legalized in the state after a group of activists submitted a list containing more than the minimum number of voter signatures required to put the matter on the 2020 ballot.

Though the signatures that were submitted on Wednesday this week still have to be verified by the Mississippi Secretary of State, Mississippians for Compassionate Care (MCC), the group behind the campaign to put the matter before voters, are confident that all is set after they submitted lists containing in excess of 214,000 voter signatures.

Out of that total number of signatures, clerks in different counties have already certified at least 105,686 signatures. This number alone exceeds the minimum number of voter signatures required by 20,000.

The office of the secretary of state confirmed that the medical marijuana petition had been filed and the process of verifying the signatures had started so that the department would be ready to submit that petition to the state legislature on their first day of business in 2020 if everything is as it should be regarding the signatures collected.

Hitting the target number in terms of voter signatures isn’t the only requirement that the activists had to meet. They also had to make sure that they obtained certain voter signature numbers from voters in the different congressional districts within the state if the petition was to stand a chance of making it onto the ballot.

The MCC is confident that all those requirements were met since the campaigners received overwhelming support from the people as the group collected signatures.

If the measure is approved by voters during the 2020 election, patients suffering from a variety of debilitating conditions, including cancer and chronic pain, would be eligible to use medical marijuana. The petition has a list of 22 conditions for which patients can apply to be certified and start using medical marijuana.

The patients would be allowed to purchase and possess up to 2.5 ounces of medical marijuana products within a 14-day timeframe before they can purchase more products.

Collecting signatures to put the matter on the ballot is one thing, and getting the majority of voters to support the measure is another thing altogether. However, the activists are confident that with opinion polls showing 77 percent support among Mississippians, the medical marijuana ballot measure is likely to sail through.

Before that happens, the Mississippians for Compassionate Care activists have to contend with opposition from the Board of Health in the state and from Gov. Phil Bryant (R).

Experts are in agreement that marijuana industry players like Willow Biosciences Inc. (CSE: WLLW) and Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) will be hoping that the ballot measure delivers medical marijuana to the state so that patients can have more options as they look for remedies for their specific ailments.

420 with CNW – Missouri Receives More than 2,100 Medical Marijuana Business Applications

The Department of Health in Missouri announced earlier this week that it had received 2,163 applications from companies that wanted to operate medical cannabis facilities in the state. This tally reflects the applications that were received by the time the 4:30 pm Monday deadline clocked.

Only a small fraction of those applicants will be given licenses by the end of this year since the number of dispensary licensees required is 192 while 86 licenses will be given to manufacturing facilities. 60 licenses are earmarked for medical marijuana cultivators while ten are for testing facilities. This means that the state will issue a total of 348 licenses.

Missouri was one of the states in which voters approved a ballot initiative to legalize medical cannabis during the midterm elections. When regulators announced that interested companies should start submitting their applications, the response was massive.

When the constitutional amendment was passed, the state was required to start receiving facility license applications by August 3. The original deadline for the submission of license applications was August 17 but the huge demand made the Health Department to extend that deadline to Monday (Aug. 19).

The extension was also motivated by the desire to give all those people who had paid the non-refundable license application fee a chance to submit their applications for consideration when the applications are being assessed.

The constitutional amendment also required the regulators to begin accepting applications from patients and caregivers by June 4. By the start of this week, 6,500 patients and caregivers had expressed interest in participating in the medical marijuana program.

Dr. Randall Williams, the Missouri Health Department director, revealed that the regulators were pleased by the enthusiasm exhibited for the medical cannabis program. He explained that everything that his department is doing is geared at providing excellent customer service, and that was partially why they had extended the deadline for the submission of facility applications.

Now that the license application deadline has passed, the next stage will involve scoring the applications in order to identify which ones will be selected. The scoring will be undertaken by Wise Health Solutions, a third-party private company based in Nevada.

By the end of this year, Missouri will name the successful applicants and work will begin in earnest so that by mid-2020, patients can start accessing medical cannabis products in licensed dispensaries.

Experts applaud the seamless way in which Missouri has handled the process so far and they expect industry actors like Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI) and Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTCQB: NUGS) to also be pleased that everything is on track as laid out in the constitutional amendment which legalized medical marijuana.

420 with CNW – Why You Should Inform Your Anesthesiologist About Your Cannabis Use

Doctors in Colorado are urging their patients to disclose their cannabis use habits if the patients are due to undergo a surgical procedure regardless of whether that surgery is routine or major surgery.

This call comes after a small study was done on how the medical community was using one common anesthetic drug, propofol, which is used to sedate patients before surgery. The researchers found that on average, the people who used marijuana required approximately thrice the amount of sedation that non-cannabis users required.

These results made the researchers to wonder what additional risks, such as breathing problems, marijuana users may face when they undergo surgery using such high amounts of anesthetics.

In partial response to such concerns, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists updated the guidelines its members use during their work. The amended guidelines now require anesthetic nurses to take additional steps to keep the airways of marijuana users clear while the patients undergo surgery. Another provision also advises the nurses to refrain from using any anesthetic drugs (sedatives) that could potentially affect the heart rate of marijuana users.

The doctors in Colorado explain that they picked interest in the patients’ use of marijuana because the drug can affect how much sedation should be administered prior to a surgical procedure.

Luckily for the medical professionals in Colorado, marijuana has been legal for years, so patients are unlikely to be guarded about revealing their cannabis use habits. This is because the stigma directed at marijuana users has been knocked back to a great extent.

This open discussion with doctors is timely, because the National Survey on Drug Use and Health done in 2017 indicated that the number of people in Colorado who reported that they had used marijuana at least once within the past 30 days increased to 17 percent from 8 percent in 2006 when a similar survey was done. For comparison, the average past 30-day marijuana use in the country is 9 percent.

The larger proportion of people using marijuana in the state means that more people could be exposed to risks during and after surgery if the patients aren’t forthcoming to their doctors so that appropriate precautions are taken.

While more research may still be needed to ascertain what specific effects marijuana use brings to patients besides requiring larger doses of sedatives, it is in your best interest to let your doctor know even if you live in an area where marijuana is still illegal. The risks of keeping quiet about your marijuana use as you go in for surgery outweigh those of full disclosure.

For now, everyone, including marijuana industry participants like Willow Biosciences Corp. (CSE: WLLW) and Youngevity International Inc. (NASDAQ: YGYI), who minds about people’s health would like the scientific community to speed up their inquiry into what the medical community needs to do to keep marijuana users safe before, during and after undergoing surgery. Otherwise, scaremongers may use the gap to spread unfounded rumors about cannabis use.
