420 with CNW — How to Choose Marijuana Packaging Suppliers

America’s state-legal cannabis industry is one of the youngest and fastest-growing industries in the country. In just a couple of years, players in the cannabis game have been able to generate billions of dollars in sales, and most experts project massive growth for cannabis. However, despite being extremely profitable, the marijuana and hemp sectors are wrought with pitfalls, including supply chain issues, long lead times and uneven regulations across state lines. To ensure that your packaging is compliant with packaging regulations and doesn’t eat into your profit margins, keep the following tips in mind when you contract packaging suppliers.

According to a variety of executives from cannabis companies in the United States, desirable qualities such as communication, transparency and quality should be your main focus. Brook Allman, the founder and head of product at Platinum Brands, says you need a packaging supplier who will meet deadlines on a consistent basis and warn you beforehand about potential delays. The last thing you want is to slow down or halt production since your packaging supplier didn’t inform you of incoming delays. Similarly, Jonathan Persofsky, the cofounder and CEO of Green Gruff,  advises players in the marijuana sector to find suppliers with accurate forecasting abilities to ensure they always have enough packaging on hand.

Reliability is essential, says the vice president of marketing at Theory Wellness, Thomas Winstanley. Can the suppliers deliver on their promises, including quality, price points or timelines? You will want a supplier that can always be counted on to keep their word.

For Chris Lane, the chief marketing officer at Airfield Supply Co., his goal is to source packaging suppliers who meet his company’s sustainability and recyclability values. With climate change and waste becoming more pressing by the day, sourcing sustainable and recyclable packaging will limit your products’ impact on the environment and attract customers who are on the lookout for ecofriendly products.

Experience is equally important, says Samip Shah, the chief operating officer at C3 Industries. A packaging supplier that has experience working with a variety of businesses in different industries will have solid problem-solving capabilities, he says.

Conversely, you should stay away from packaging suppliers that don’t put quality and timely delivery first, says Cortney Smith, CEO and founder of DaVinci. Another red flag you should keep an eye on is poor communication. Allie Marconi, the senior director of marketing at Copperstate Farms and Sol Flower, says suppliers that offer a swift response and a strategy for addressing your queries are best suited for your long-term goals.

Startups in the marijuana space would do well to borrow a leaf from companies such as Simply Sonoma Inc., which have fine-tuned their processes for selecting different vendors in order to deliver products with a high degree of consistency despite the shocks the global economy has faced in the recent past.

420 with CNW — NYC Officials Admit Safe-Consumption Sites Already Paying Off

The opioid pandemic has wreaked havoc across America for decades, taking hundreds of thousands of lives from 1999 and leaving millions of Americans with substance use disorder. The prevalence of pharmaceutical drugs as well as the increased accessibility of illicit drugs such as heroin has made it nearly impossible to effectively end the opioid crisis. And since addiction and drug use tends to have extremely negative stereotypes, addicts tend to shy away from seeking treatment.

For several lawmakers and drug reform groups, the first thing to do was reduce opioid deaths. From April 2020 to April 2021, America lost an estimated 100,000 people to opioid overdoses, significantly underscoring the need for immediate action. Ironically, one of the most controversial solutions to opioid deaths —safe-consumption sites — has proven to be quite effective at preventing individuals from succumbing to opioid overdoses. These sites are locations where people suffering from drug addiction can consumer illicit drugs under the supervision of trained medical professionals to prevent overdose deaths.

New York City was the first city in the country to launch an Overdose Prevention Center. According to the New York City Health Department, these harm-reduction centers have been used more than 2,000 times and prevented at least 59 overdose deaths so far. The initial results have been quite promising, Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said in a press release, with the harm-reduction centers reducing “needless suffering and avoidable death.”

The simple, indisputable truth is that safe-consumption sites save lives, Chokshi says. For years, drug reform advocates have argued that such sites could be instrumental in helping America combat the opioid overdose epidemic and reduce the stigma associated with substance misuse disorders. Destigmatizing such disorders will make people a lot more comfortable with seeking treatment before it’s too late. Sam Rivera, the executive director of OnPoint NYC, which runs a safe consumption site, says the group is trying to humanize people who, in many cases, aren’t treated as human.

The New York City Board of Health recently approved a resolution that outlined the evidence showing just how effective a harm-reduction approach, rather than criminal justice, can be. The unanimously approved resolution also urged New York State and the federal government to provide authorization for harm-reduction centers as well as expand funding and support for the harm-reduction approach.

There may be some benefit to determining how this harm-reduction effort can benefit from cutting-edge devices such as the smart inhalers and dose-measuring devices commercialized by companies such as RYAH Group Inc. (CSE: RYAH) since the technology has the capacity to regulate the dosage consumed.

420 with CNW — Study Looks to Reddit for Answers on Factors Fueling Cannabis Legalization

Researchers from Brown University recently conducted a study that examined posts on Reddit that could help explain what may have influenced the shift observed in the support for cannabis legalization by the public.

Babak Hemmatian, the researcher who led the study, used machine learning to conduct an analysis of more than 3 million comments made on Reddit in the period 2009–19, to understand the online conversations that drove individuals to support reform. The chosen period of study represents an important timeframe in the legalization movement at the state level.

The analysis revealed some unexpected trends, including the fact that individuals posting more character, judgment-based, generalized arguments was a clear prelude for state-level marijuana reform. This was observed around 2012 in particular as the first states ended marijuana prohibition.

In an interview, Hemmatian stated that his objective was to learn whether the way the public discussed cannabis facilitated the shift to bipartisan consensus in a few years and how the society’s attitude change influenced how people talked about marijuana.  The study also found that the legal implications for marijuana reform weren’t discussed in detail until after reforms had been passed in most states. This is in addition to discovering that discussions on marijuana’s health impacts only grew after legalization and mainly occurred in casual conversations.

In the report, the author of the study explained that both topics were pertinent to how and whether cannabis needed to be deregulated but were ignored in the decision-making process then addressed once the societal decision had been made. He further intimated that character judgments may have pushed individuals who weren’t opposed to legalization but hadn’t made up their minds over to the prolegalization side.

This isn’t the first time Reddit has been used to identify patterns and trends in marijuana consumption. In 2018, a study published in the “Drug and Alcohol Dependence” journal analyzed more than 2 million posts on the site, which led to various discoveries.

It seems researchers aren’t the only ones interested in investigating the intersection of social media and drug policy. Recently, the FDA revealed that it planned to use Reddit and other new sources of data to better understand public health issues surrounding the use of CBD and other cannabis derivatives, including THC. The agency also plans to develop a system to help find usage patterns and safety signals linked to emerging cannabis-derived products in real time. This includes THC, which the FDA warns consumers about, noting that the agency has yet to assess the substance’s effectiveness or safety.

The FDA warning notwithstanding, dozens of states have moved ahead to legalize the herb, and many companies, including Cannabis Strategic Ventures Inc. (OTC: NUGS), are thriving in those established legal markets.

420 with CNW — Why Cannabis Firms Need to Focus on ESG Principles

Cannabis is one of the fastest-growing sectors in America. After only a couple of years of legal sales, cannabis firms across the country have generated billions of dollars in sales and created hundreds of thousands of new employment opportunities. The global cannabis industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 32.04% from 2021–28, reaching a valuation of $197.74 billion in 2028. As the market fills with competition, cannabis companies that want to stand out from the pack and attract investors will need to focus on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (“ESG”) principles.

ESG principles are environmental, social and corporate governance criteria that determine a company’s ethical impact and sustainability. A significant number of private investors look at waste and sustainability when they are considering whether or not they should invest in a company. According to an Association of Investment Companies study that surveyed private investors, 56% of respondents indicated they care a great deal about climate change. With global warming and climate change becoming more pressing by the day, it’s only natural that investors would want to invest in companies that have ethical practices and make sustainability a priority.

The survey revealed that 65% of private investors consider ESG issues when they finance companies. Investors who were younger than 45 were much more concerned with ESG principles (77%) than those 45 and older (61%).

Ideally, you should dedicate a great deal of your attention to ESG principles if you wish to attract private investors. For starters, you can conduct a materiality assessment to find how best your firm can interact with and engage with the neighboring community. This involves forming a team with diverse skills, identifying stakeholders that can affect your business and engaging with those stakeholders to identify their most pressing concerns.

After that, you will be in a better position to create an integrated ESG report that discloses potential risks pertaining to three key areas: environmental, social, and corporate governance. The report can be used to convince senior leadership to act on potential ESG deficiencies, identify opportunities for more efficient resource allocation and satisfy stakeholder needs.

Furthermore, creating an integrated ESG report and acting on it will enable your communications and marketing team to promote the company’s ESG success stories. Ultimately, cannabis companies such as Flora Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: FLGC), which focus on ESG principles, will significantly increase their chances of attracting private investors and succeeding in the cannabis space.

420 with CNW — AOC Urges Biden to Exercise Executive Authority on Cannabis Policy

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“AOC”) is calling on President Joseph Biden to begin taking unilateral action on different progressive measures, including marijuana. Earlier last week, the congresswoman tweeted that the president needed to use his executive authority, which he’d been underutilizing thus far.

She explains that there was a lot the president, who has been in office for about a year now, could do regarding healthcare, immigration, student debt, climate and marijuana, among others. Ocasio-Cortez recently filed a bipartisan measure to incentivize state-level marijuana expungements.

The congresswoman was also one of the first legislators to suggest that the president use executive authority to advance cannabis reform, joining other colleagues who sent a letter to the president earlier this year. A report that was recently published by the Congressional Research Service asserts that the president has the power to grant mass pardons for marijuana offenses, adding that the administration can also proceed with legalizing marijuana federally without waiting for action from legislators.

A separate letter has also been sent to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from a pair of Republican legislators who criticized their continued silence and lack of action on cannabis reform and urged the administration to reschedule marijuana federally.

These are a few of the numerous legislators who have directly demanded reform from the president. Many, including advocates for reform, are disappointed by Biden, who has  declined to take any steps to change the country’s approach to marijuana despite campaigning on a prorescheduling and prodecriminalization platform.

Since the election, neither the president nor vice president have spoken about their marijuana campaign pledges. This despite many pleas from advocates and legislators to address the issue.

In November, a group of senators also sent a letter to the president urging him to utilize his executive authority to grant a mass pardon for individuals with nonviolent cannabis convictions. In a recent interview, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of these legislators, stated that by granting the relief, the president could promote racial equity and boost the country’s economy.

Correspondingly, a group of more than 150 academics, law enforcement professionals, politicians, athletes and celebrities also sent a letter to the president in September, which urged him to issue an unconditional and complete pardon to all individuals who had been federally convicted of nonviolent cannabis crimes.  This particular letter was sent at a time when the administration was encouraging individuals who had been placed on home confinement temporarily for federal drug offenses to fill out application forms for clemency.

The harms done by the criminal justice system with regard to marijuana is just one of the thorns in the flesh of the people most affected by the prohibitionist war, and the ripples are still being felt even in jurisdictions where legalization has taken place and firms such as American Cannabis Partners operate.

CannabisNewsBreaks – Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (NASDAQ: LEXX) Announces Approval from Independent Review Board for DehydraTECH-CBD Human Clinical Study

Lexaria Bioscience (NASDAQ: LEXX), a global innovator in drug-delivery platforms, has received Independent Review Board (“IRB”) approval for its planned DehydraTECH-CBD human hypertension study HYPER-H21-4; the approval was received earlier than anticipated. The study is designed to “de-risk” outcomes prior to the company’s planned entry into regulatory pathways for the use of DehydraTECH-CBD to treat hypertension and perhaps other forms of cardiovascular disease. The six-week study, which is entirely funded through the existing cash resources, is planned to include 60 volunteers, aged 45 to 70, using three 150 mg doses of DehydraTECH-CBD daily for the duration of the study. Dosing is anticipated to begin by April of next year. The study will incorporate a double-blinded, randomized, cross-over design, with a placebo control. The length of the study allows the company to evaluate the impact of DehydraTECH-CBD over time as well as the potential for longer-term health benefits. This study is the most comprehensive undertaken by Lexaria. “The hypertension market is valued at $28 billion per year and is expected to continue growing as one of the world’s top health problems and as a subset of the larger heart disease market,” the company stated in the press release. “Over 1.1 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension. Fewer than 1 person in 4 with hypertension have successfully controlled their blood pressure through medications, meaning the potential market for hypertension drugs is much larger than $28 billion per year if an affordable drug was available with few or no side effects. Lexaria believes that its DehydraTECH-CBD may introduce a more tolerable anti-hypertensive treatment option that may be used alone or in combination with other medications, to reduce BP with fewer discouraging and unwanted side effects.”

About Lexaria Bioscience Corp.

Lexaria Bioscience’s patented drug-delivery technology, DehydraTECH(TM), improves the way active pharmaceutical ingredients (“APIs”) enter the bloodstream by promoting more effective oral delivery. Since 2016, DehydraTECH has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to increase bioabsorption with cannabinoids and nicotine by 5 to 10 times — and in some instances by as much as 27 times — compared to standard industry formulations, as well as reduce time of onset from one to two hours to minutes and mask unwanted tastes. The delivery systems are also being evaluated for orally administered, anti-viral drugs; nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDs”); PDE5 inhibitors; and more. DehydraTECH has also evidenced an ability to deliver some drugs more effectively across the blood brain barrier. Lexaria operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a robust intellectual property portfolio with 23 patents granted and more than 50 patents pending worldwide. 420 with CNW — Common Myths About Marijuana Edibles That Have Been Debunked

As more states legalize cannabis for recreational and/or medical use, the popularity of cannabis edibles grows. People in legal states can now make their own homemade edible versions or purchase edibles from state-legal dispensaries. Unfortunately, some people are somewhat skeptical when it comes to consuming edibles, given the common myths spread about them.

While some myths perpetuate harmless but incorrect narratives about cannabis, others are harmful. Today, we’ll look at and debunk the most common myths about edibles.

Mangoes increase marijuana’s potency

If you are wondering how in the world someone could start a myth that consuming a mango alongside cannabis will make the potency of the marijuana shoot through the roof, here is your answer. It so happens that marijuana and mangoes both have a compound called myrcene. This terpenoid contributes to the smell as well as flavor of mangoes and marijuana.

However, that is as far as the similarities go. Cannabis potency is measured by how much THC is present in a given product, and the terpenoid myrcene in mangoes will not have any effect upon the potency of cannabis. If you find someone who swears that mangoes increase the strength of marijuana, ask them to read up on the placebo effect.

Raw cannabis can be used in edibles

Many people believe that all you need to do when making homemade edibles is to add raw cannabis into your cake or brownie mix. This is a mistake, because your cannabis needs to undergo a process that activates THC, known as decarboxylation. Raw marijuana that hasn’t undergone decarboxylation doesn’t induce the psychoactive effects sought by users, which means that adding raw marijuana to an edible recipe is wasteful, especially if your goal is to get high.

Consuming a lot of edibles is fatal

Edibles usually have a higher concentration of THC, which leaves most people who consume one concerned that they may have overdosed. While you may end up feeling the edible’s effects a bit more strongly, you shouldn’t worry that overindulging in edibles may result in a fatal overdose. This is because while edibles do contain high THC levels in comparison to the average joint, the level is still nowhere close to the amount that can cause a fatal cannabis overdose.

Edibles are best served as desserts

The popularity of marijuana-infused candies and marijuana brownies has perpetuated this fallacy, with the use of flavors such as chocolate and peanut butter in masking the taste of marijuana when making edibles only making the myth more believable.

This is not the case, however, as edibles can be eaten at any time of day and practically anywhere, as long as its legal. While edibles have been around for a while, cannabis drinks from companies such as BevCanna Enterprises Inc. (CSE: BEV) (OTCQB: BVNNF) (FSE: 7BC) are also claiming an increasing share of the marijuana products market. This is a segment to watch for interested investors.

420 with CNW — Study Finds Smoking CBD-Rich Cannabis Doesn’t Impact Driving Ability

Over the past couple of years, cannabis has experienced a surge in popularity partly due to its purported medical abilities. As territories around the world started legalizing cannabis and hemp, reports of the controversial plant’s medical efficacy spread far and wide. Cannabidiol, one of the chemical compounds produced by plants in the cannabis family, has attracted most of this attention thanks to its potent medical properties. Unlike THC, the main psychoactive agent in marijuana, CBD does not intoxicate users or slow their mental and physical reactions.

A pilot study from Switzerland sought to find out whether there was a connection between smoking CBD-rich marijuana and reduced driving ability. The study found that there was “no significant impact” on the driving ability of its participants. Furthermore, there were no negative effects on vital signs, even though all the study participants had more THC in their blood than the legal limit allowed. This corroborates what we already know about CBD: it is not psychoactive, and it may reduce THC’s ability to intoxicate users.

The Swiss study comprised 33 participants who were each given a joint with 500 mg of tobacco and either 500 mg of placebo or 500 mg of CBD-rich cannabis. The placebo contained a cannabinoid-free, nicotine-free herbal mixture with a hemp aroma called Knaster Hemp while the CBD-rich marijuana contained 15.5% CBD and 0.9% THC.

After taking either the placebo or CBD-rich cannabis, the participants were taken through a variety of common DUI tests. Researchers concluded that there was no correlation between smoking CBD-rich cannabis flower and reduced driving ability, with study participants who smoked both CBD and the placebo experiencing zero decline in motor time, reaction time, concentration, performance or behavior under stress.

Some of the tests the researchers employed include psychological assessments such as reaction tests, a determination assessment that analyzed participants’ reactions under complex stimulus as well as a Cognitrone test. While there were no significant differences in reaction time after the participants smoked both CBD-rich cannabis and the placebo, there was a difference in reaction and motor time between the men and women regardless of whatever they consumed. However, there was no difference between the male and female participants in the determination test.

Researchers from the University of Bern’s Institute of Forensic Medicine say that although all study participants had enough THC in their blood to cause the symptoms of impairment, they did not exhibit any symptoms. They believe this is the first-ever study to investigate the potential ramifications of smoking cannabidiol-rich marijuana on road safety.

This study proves that consuming CBD-rich cannabis products from licensed marijuana companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) is unlikely to put drivers at risk, but caution is still required as a lot more isn’t yet fully understood about how various cannabis compounds affect one’s ability to drive safely.

Cannabis Strategic Ventures (OTCQB: NUGS) is an emerging leader in the U.S. cannabis marketplace. The company is beginning to deploy its newly acquired licenses, including the opening of its first Los Angeles-based, customer-facing MDRN (Modern) Tree cannabis dispensary, as it takes key steps forward in its strategic plan to implement a farm-to-sale model. “After securing key licensing, we are wasting no time in deploying those assets to launch one of California’s top vertical cannabis models,” stated NUGS CEO Simon Yu. “MDRN Tree will be our factory retail store — our direct interface with our end-market community — where we plan on showcasing the cannabis flower produced at our NUGS Farm North cultivation site. This farm-to-sale model offers the potential to drive simultaneous gains in quality control and profitability, and I look forward to providing further updates as we make strides in this direction.” According to a recent article, following the launch of MDRN Tree, NUGS plans to deploy another of its new licenses for the establishment of an indoor cultivation facility with up to 1,200 grow lights. “The company projects ‘an upside potential for total production capacity of over 15,000 lbs. of premium exotic cannabis flower per year.”
